Alas, the tribal nature Afghanistan is both its strength and its greatest weakness. Exhibit A is how minorities are often treated. For example myself who is a trans woman, though not yet transitioned. This fact would cause some in Afghanistan to stone me to death, but the same fact would cause many other Afghans to treat me as a fellow human being, regardless of my gender.

Bullshit! I've been studying British India. The Mughal Empire was fatally weakened by 1st Nadir Shah of Persia and his Afghan buddies sacking Delhi in 1739, then by a series of Durrani Empire plundering raids into India led by Abdali Shah of Afghanistan. Afghanistan never had the military capability to invade British India. Afghanistan did not do well in 2nd Anglo Afghan War. The British won all battles except Battle of Maiwan, and even that battle cost the Afghans far more than the British, setting up the Afghans for defeat in Battle of Kandahar, ending the war.
You can rent Afghanistan 🇦🇫 but you can’t own it. Afghan people are fighters and one ☝️ fighter is better than 100 soldiers.Russia knows that very well

This presentation was truly excellent - balanced, unbiased, willing to challenge a long-held, unsupported "historical" axiom with well thought out facts, with a complete historical timeline. Great work.
"Epimetheus" appears to be a Greek or pro-Greek individual with an inferiority complex over the fact that Alexander was defeated by the tribesmen of Paktuike (who he avoids mentioning). Herodotus described the "Paktues"/"Paktyans" as the bravest and "most war-like" of peoples. Greeks were generally irrelevant to Afghanistan's history, but watching this video (and the other video by "Epimetheus" referencing Afghanistan) one could be forgiven for thinking that these videos were about a propagandist's view of Greek history, rather than Afghan history. As the founders of Afghanistan, one would think the Pakhtun tribesmen, who maintained their independence and customs since time immemorial (including during Alexander's era) place higher in priority than the "Indo-Greek kingdoms" (of Punjab, not Afghanistan) or the "Seleucids" that were comparatively irrelevant to Afghan history. By the way, Bactria was Central Asia (to the North), rather than Afghanistan. A knowledge of geography (and actual history) tends to help.

Conquering is not just capturing land but the subjugation of people. The people of the lands you conquer must accept you as their leader and allow you to rule over them. This has never been done in the history of Afghanistan so by that logic I don’t believe it has ever truly been conquered.
conan263 the afghans beat the mongols but Genghis Khan didn’t leave them alone so he slaughtered innocent people that wouldn’t accept his rule which ended up killing most of the country. By logic Afghanistan was never conquered by the mongols there is even a book that explains this but I forgot the name.
conan263 mongols were a nomadic empire. They didn’t settle in the cities they conquered. When they turned up they expected the population to step aside and allow them to plunder. The Afghans did not allow this, they always resisted.
conan263 agreed, in some cities they did settle. However their lasting impact in Afghanistan were the Hazara people who most likely descended from the mongols. Due to the inability to subjugate the population they resorted to rape and destruction and their descendants eventually adopting Islam.

I think what helped the medians Persian and parthians conquer Afghanistan is simply that the population (Tajiks, pashtuns, etc) are considered as iranic peoples. Sharing a culture probably would of helped to assimilate the land easily, allowing it to be controlled.
Greek rule would have benefited from inter marriages between alexanders veterans and its population, helping to solidify Greek rule in the region ( as there children probably inherited a favourable position within the administration of the satrapy during the Seleucid reign)
What I believe helped these empire conquer the region for a time is that they employed step or were of similar culture, so as not to be seen as outsider.
I have to correct you in one point, the people of Afghanistan did not adapt the Zoroastrian fate due to the Achamenids introducing it to them, the Zoroastrian fate was born in Bactria, where Zarathustra spend most of his life time and also died, perhaps he was also born in Bactria which many historians assume. It was their local faith at that time, the blue mosque of Mazar in Afghanistan is also assumed to be the shrine of Zarathustra, when the Arabs wanted to destroy the shrine/temple the locals told them that it would be the shrine of Ali(the cousin of Mohamed) so the Arabs/Muslim didn’t destroy it, something similar happened to the tomb of Cyrus the great in Iran. In Firdausi Shahnameh( the greatest epic poem of the persian language) it is said that Zarathustras tomb is somewhere in Balkh(Bactria), so it is most likely the Blue mosque, that would also explain why Afghans go to the blue mosque at Nowruz( Zoroastrian new year) and celebrate old Zoroastrian traditions at that blue mosque(Janda bala with the darafshe kaviani) , but they don’t know why they do it at that blue mosque. So Zoroastrianism was not introduced by western Iranians to Afghanistan, it was the local religion of the eastern Iranian tribes in Afghanistan.
Mr sSs It is not confirmed but that doesn’t make it a lie. It is the most plausible explanation for the fact that they call it the tomb of Ali, I mean why else should they just call a shrine „shrine of Ali“ even if Ali’s tomb is in Iraq? A similar situation happened in Iran at the tomb of Cyrus the great. The Arabs/native converted Muslims wanted to destroy the tomb because he was a Zoroastrian but other natives told them that this would be the tomb of Solomon, so they wouldn’t destroy it. I assume something similar happened in Balkh, Mazar e Sharif. Yes it is not confirmed and just a assumptions but I also read about other people who think the same.
Nah hes right. Achaemenids were the first people to have ever been known to be zoroastrians. Theres a reason why zoroastrians in india identify as "Parsi" and "Irani" because those people were always zoroastrians to begin with. While its true Zoroastrianism originated in what is now afghanistan, it was Western Iranians that were first converted and spread it across the Near east. Ahura Mazda first appeared in the Achaemenid period (c. 550 - 330 BCE) under Darius I's Behistun Inscription. Until Artaxerxes II of Persia (405-04 to 359-58 BCE), Ahura Mazda was worshipped and invoked alone. With Artaxerxes II, Ahura Mazda was invoked in a triad, with Mithra and Anahita. In the Achaemenid period, there are no representations of Ahura Mazda other than the custom for every emperor to have an empty chariot drawn by white horses, to invite Ahura Mazda to accompany the Persian army on battles. Images of Ahura Mazda began in the Parthian period, but were stopped and replaced with stone carved figures in the Sassanid period. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahura_Mazda

@@samsorrahimi4731No, the Afghans didn't. The Khwarazmian Empire, which Afghanistan is a part of, as a whole lasted only three years against the Mongols before getting extensively depopulated and subjugated, and spent the next couple centuries under Mongol rule. First under the Chagatai, then Timur and finally the Mughals. So yes, you fought. For three years. To the credit of the Afghans, the Mongols spent nearly half the invasion in Afghanistan, and even managed to kill Mötüken, grandson of Genghis during the final year. But considering that Genghis Khan had six wives and five hundred concubines, and his sons themselves, like Genghis, are known for keeping large harams and breeding like bunnies, killing a grandson gave the Mongols as much pause as you would by trying to stop a wave by throwing sand at it. And no, the Afghans didn't defeat the Mongols in India, that's the Delhi Sultanate.
I feel it would be more apt to call it the "defier of empire", as while yes it has been conquered in the past, its still a testament to how you mentioned the region being home to multiple empires and cultures that broke away or formed on their own, and yet having a lasting independent legacy regardless of the influence. And also because despite the many failings of certain empires like Britain failing to pacify them, they were more a money sink, making it harder to keep up imperial ambitions. very informative video.

It's not so much that Afghanistan is unconquerable or that it can't be ruled, but rather that any empire that tries to conquer it only does so in passing. If anything It's the terrain itself that makes the land so unruly.

(Which probably means more, if you consider he married a Bactrian Princess.) Many of those empires have gone to AF for geopolitical reasons (real or perceived) which have dissipated quickly enough. In the end, they may have had a reason to go to AF, but there was no reason for them to stay. The difficult terrain makes it ideal for guerrilla operations, as does the decentralized, fractured, and outright tribalist nature of its culture. All the locals have to do is to be irritating enough to the invader to make it want to leave, and then fight each other over power until the next invader comes. Its geographic location is more of a curse than a blessing. It is easy to defend, and just important enough to make people want to invade, but not valuable enough to make people want to invest in advancing the people and the culture. Many other regions standing between major powers or Empires have suffered a similar fate. Bohemia, during the ottoman hegemony for example. I don't know about it being the Graveyard of Empires, but it is certainly the Graveyard of the Afghans.
@shield&sword peace How many Afghans have died? What you call glory I call a miserable death for no reason at at all. There is no God in that fight. It is just ambitions men getting young men to fight by using his God's name in vain. That's the other half of it. You can blame the invaders for half of Afghanistan's misfortunes, but the other half fall squarely on the shoulders of Afghanis predating on their own for political gain. They offer you a mirage of God or State, but it is Gold and power what they are really after. You should open a history book. It'd do you some good. The American revolutionaries were favored by the British's extensive commitment to a conflict in Europe. While they were a valuable asset, there were more important commitments at stake. Conversely, you should look at the outcome of the countries occupied after WWII, and learn a few valuable lessons you can use to help your country. See, sometimes a so-called military victory is just a defeat in the long term. There are other ways of winning, if you have the presence of mind to think on your own.
America put what all it got to defeat those poor people, America even wanted to stay and create it the way they wanted but coudn't make these people accept even a single term when leaving ? 300 million dollars daily for 20 years was the expense of war faught by America. Don't know the real reason for this, but they have endured. It would've have been nice to see this country grow it's people in a much better position, trading with other nations But this country always seems to be fighting of invaders and i can see where growth is slow. What is it about Afghanistan that nations just have to be fighting these people. Thanks for sharing excellent history lessons
The Mongolians demolished the Kwaresmian empire. They had some trouble in Afghanistan trying to catch the Shah (who was on the run for his life) In Afghanistan the Mongolians lost a major battle. They came back with a larger force, invaded Afghanistan and chased the shah into India.
It is self explanatory that harsh landscape make tough people, and that high lands and narrow valleys make great ambushes. I think that under Iranian empires there was not that much resistance, that is why it was held. Usually countries don't like to conquer lands that are unreasonably difficult to hold on to.
Let's be honest, the whole Afghanistan as a "Graveyard of Empires" is nothing more than a meme that don't really stand up to scrutiny. The video already covered about how Alexander the Great and the later Greek successor kingdoms and the Persian Empires did conquer the region. Not to mention the region itself being the cradle rather than a graveyard of empires. As for the British, sure they never conquered Afghanistan the way they did with India, but that was never their intention. The British simply wanted Afghanistan to serve as a buffer state against Russia during the Great Game in the 1800s. The only real case could be made for the Afghanistan being the "graveyard of empires" is the Soviet Union but even then there were various factors that lead to its collapse.
Let's be real: There were some Empires who could hold it for longer times, they declined eventually... It was the origin of some Empires, which eventually declined, too. Doesn't sound different than the rest of the world to me
I loved when you said "Empires are not litteraly buried in graves" haha History Matters did a similar video, both of you have different points The region what is now afghanistan (like you said) was rebellious at some times and accepted invaders that embraced their culture (Alexander, the Yuezhi, the turkic tribes)
"Infighting tribes that unite only to defend against an outside invader" Afghanistan is basically no country but a region that the native people turned into a battlefield, or if successfully invaded merely used as a trade route.
I'd say it was more the battlefield of empires. No empire fell due to Afghanistan as far as i'm aware? Edit... Not being a dick, just stating what I thought to be true.
Alot of those empires based in Afghanistan used it as a launching platform to destroy other empires, they used Afghan mercenaries etc in their wars. The ghorid empire basically change the entire history of India as it managed to conquer northern India and Pakistan. So did the Mughals.
in general the more rough the terrain, the harder it is to control a region by force. The only effective way to to make the residents happy enough to accept you

Yes it is true and I agree with you, even Ahmad Shah Durani was with Iranian side.

Your welcome John! Glad you liked it :)
All of your comment is correct except arabs wanted destroy it,... Its a lie and no one in history say that.
When the arabs came ali a.s was alive
Thanks

Late response.
The Amhara and Habesha people who were the ruling class of Ethiopia came from south Arabia aka Yemen, but they were not Sabaeans or Himyarites but another Semitic nation who spoke Ge'ez
language.
Although they are not related to the Sabaeans, the Solomonic dynasty claim that they are the decsendants of Queen of Saba(or Sheba as they call it) and king Solomon. But keep in mind that they were not the only ones who claimed this lineage because other Arabian dynasties did.
The descendants of the Sabaean tribes are called Qahtani or Yamani Arabs, and they make almost 50%+ of the Arabian peninsula population.
Yemen was invaded by them in 525AD but for relatively short time, nothing significant.
When it comes to revolt they know how to do it for sure

I read a book by a Soviet Para about his war. He said he passed a tour on patrol and he finally asked the translator what it said, "You can conquer Bactria, but you can't hold it." (Which probably means more, if you consider he married a Bactrian Princess.)
As to the Brits, the Sovs and us, the involvement in Afghanistan came toward the end, when lower hanging fruit was not available. The Afghans are not the greatest soldiers in the world. They are the greatest soldiers in Afghanistan, which is not really worth the (large) effort needed to keep it.
However, the Islamic Empire was able to both conquer and change Afghanistan.

Many of those empires have gone to AF for geopolitical reasons (real or perceived) which have dissipated quickly enough.
Doesn't it give you a clear picture that the terrians are not the only thing, the people there are the real thing.

Don't know the real reason for this, but they have endured. It would've have been nice to see this country grow it's people in a much better position, trading with other nations
But this country always seems to be fighting of invaders and i can see where growth is slow. What is it about Afghanistan that nations just have to be fighting these people. Thanks for sharing excellent history lessons

It is self explanatory that harsh landscape make tough people, and that high lands and narrow valleys make great ambushes.
I think that under Iranian empires there was not that much resistance, that is why it was held.
Usually countries don't like to conquer lands that are unreasonably difficult to hold on to.
Who is here after August 15th 2021? All I gotta say is another one bites the dust.
Doesn't sound different than the rest of the world to me
Exactly..no empire sustained forever anywhere in the world.. Afghanistan s no different

"Infighting tribes that unite only to defend against an outside invader"
Afghanistan is basically no country but a region that the native people turned into a battlefield, or if successfully invaded merely used as a trade route.
Reminds me of Europe. Always fighting each other but unite only to face a common enemy i.e. Muslims, Mongols, Huns, etc.

Alot of those empires based in Afghanistan used it as a launching platform to destroy other empires, they used Afghan mercenaries etc in their wars.
