The Great Game rivalry between Russia & Britain placed the mountainous Kingdom of Afghanistan in the middle. Emerging out of the dying embers of the Durrani Empire, Afghanistan fought hard for its existence; but their destiny would be disrupted with multiple invasions from the British in the south and a wariness of Russia incursions in the north. Over the course of 3 Wars starting in the 1830s and extending until 1919, we’ll learn of the greatest military disaster faced by the British Empire, the intrigues of an Afghan ruler who tried to play two great European powers against one another and even an invasion of British India by the Afghans. This is the story of Anglo-Afghan Wars.

Hello !! Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way), don't help either. Thank you very much for your time.
Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them).
Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI)
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI)
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.
(19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad)
      Salam (Peace).

The only time the Afghans defeated the British was the Retreat from Kabul, 1st Afghan War. A British column of 4,000 soldiers and 12,000 camp followers (women and children) were murdered by Afghan tribesmen and died from lack of food and freezing temperatures. The Second Afghan War the British soundly defeated the Afghans in what was named "The War of Retribution". The Third Afghan War was when the Afghans tried to invade India, and lost every battle.

Great video! I love how you adressed misconceptions on these wars, especially the first anglo afghan war! I noticed one mistake though-Sher Ali Khan never went into exile. From 1863 to 1869 Afghanistan was in civil war, and Afzal Khan (governor of afghan turkestan) and Azam Khan (governor of Kurram) both collaborated to overthrow their uterine brother. When in February 1866 Afzal Khan captured Kabul, Sher Ali Khan simply fled to Kandahar and Herat, not to Bukhara. He was never aided by the russians. On the contrary, Bukhara actually aided Afzal Khan bcs they wanted their influence in Afghan Turkestan back, and Afzal Khan even inserted the Emir of Bukhara's name into the khutbah at Mazar-i Sharif. Bukhara even sheltered some of the afghan rebels like 'Abd al-Rahman Khan when Sher Ali retook the captial in 1868. When the British took the capital, they burned down a lot of documents containing info on Sher Ali Khan unfortunately so thats why not as much is known about this.
This Afghan Civil War, the reign of Sher Ali Khan, and indeed 19th century afghanistan in general isnt well known besides the anglo afghan wars, so if you could make another video on 19th century afghanistan, i would be more than willing to help you with research.

You mentioned in the video how you were unsure about how Akbar Khan found out about the betrayal. The reason is that he had concocted it to test Macnaughten’s loyalty (which he obviously failed). Long story short, he offered to become the vizier to Shah Shuja, allow a delay to the departure of the British and would allow Aminulla Khan (a chief ringleader of the rebellion) to be captured by the British if Macnaughten would agree to the deal (as opposed to the deal already being made with the other chiefs). The desperate Macnaughten agreed only to be captured by Akbar Khan, who felt he could no longer trust him. While it will never be known for certain, the evidence suggests that Macnaughten wasn’t going to be killed but in the confusion of the capture (while surrounded by excited, but not especially loyal, Ghazis, holy warriors, who were calling for British blood) Akbar Khan killed Macnaughten.

Not bro the Sikh army created by ranjit Singh was literally one of the best fighting forces in Asia. Guerrilla warfare was not necessary to win against the British. Sikhs had adapted European warfare and invested in their artillery. In both wars the Sikhs won every artillery engagement and this was said by a British historian. Look up the battle of ferozeshah in that battle the Sikhs outperformed the British. Only reason Sikhs lost was cuz of the empire becoming corrupt after ranjit singhs death and the dogar dynasty who betrayed the empire.

The Durand line was the worst thing that happened to the Pashtoons. The Amir at the time couldn't read the treaty which was in English and signed it without understanding what he was giving away. That is why the Afghans do not accept the Durand line and some Pashtoons south of the Durand line do not accept it either.
This is also why Pakistan keeps interfering in Afghan politics and always armed anti-government groups, and other terroristic activities. Iran does the same as Pakistan, funding anti-government Shia groups and those who want a divided Afghanistan. After the annexation of USSR, the central Asian countries north of the Afghan borders have joined Pakistan and Iran in further creating wars and division in Afghanistan.
Although while some "Afghans" who belong to the non-Pashtoon ethnicity want to divide the nation, the leaders of of those ethnicities do not. Their leaders are much happier because they know they would neither be accepted by those countries, such as Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran or Turkmenistan. They would rather remain part of Afghanistan and I think that is how it will be in the future.
There was an Afghan historian named Dr. Ghobar which has written 2 or 3 volumes about their history. I haven't found those books in English, but I heard that his family was trying to translate and publish it in English.

I think both lost the war, but Afghanistan lose more. Lots of pashtun lands are now in Pakistan, which caused many harmful effects to both Afghanistan and Pakistan even today.
While with the British, although they lost huge amount of resources and prestige in Afghanistan, it didn't cause that much of an effect for the rest of the empire
Its kinda like Vietnam. Tecnically US lost in Vietnam but Vietnamese people suffered far more than the americans

    • @adamkhan4451
      @adamkhan4451 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Well there could be a difference depending on what you’re trying to say. Vietnam wasn’t an American military loss it was a political loss. The US military was decimating the Vietnam the k/d ratio is heavily on the American side. We lost politically and the war ended. Now with this video I’m more interest who won militarily did the afghans beat the British military. I think they did as Britain was flexing its military might everywhere and taking lands because it was an empire. The us is a democracy and prone to the civilian revolt which got worse and worse as the Vietnam went on. Protest against the war got worse in Vietnam. Don’t think that happens in Britian. It would seem to me the british had a certain amount of losses it could take
Before deeming Afghanistan not worth it and the afghans gave it to them so the British pulled out.
I could be wrong I haven’t watched but Britain was an empire at the time and operated like one which means civilian unrest is way lower than the United States so the probability of the britian pulling out due to political reason stemming from anything other than military losses and resources is probably pretty low. So too many resources were being lost in Afghanistan to continue. British military lost to the afghan military.

Not entirely true. The US loss to the Vietnam military cannot be disputed The US controlled the towns but the rural areas were always controlled by the North. Even without the politics it was a war that could not be won. Firstly the North Vietnamese had no option but continue the fight, in their eyes there was no other way. The US and it's allies on the other hand were there because their governments introduced conscription and so took away any choice they might have had. Of course propoganda has always been a powerful tool and the " domino effect " slogan - the idea that if Vietnam fell to the communists then other countries would also fall was used with great effect. Over time it became clear the war was lost and the U.S had no intention of following in the footsteps of the French. To deny it was a Vietnamese military victory is a bit silly especially after the mad scramble to flee Saigon.

because the Afghan mindset is not something the West can generally relate to. War is not a series of battles to conclude by a certain time. Its a way of life that is simply handed down from generation to generation. So if they lose 100 battles in a row, it doesn't mean anything to them. The fight is something eternal for them. If it takes 400 years to get the enemy to finally give up, then so be it. It takes 400 years. its not like they really have anything else to look forward to.

Even though on paper the British were in control of Afghan foreign affairs, in reality they bought Afghan neutrality through an annual subsidy, Afghans managed their foreign affairs whenever they felt necessary as evident by several treaties and foreign missions that they engaged in. The ordinary Afghans had no sense of their independence being under the control of a foreign entitiy. So the video overstates the Afghan desire for independence, this idea of needing to secure independence was created and propogated by Amanullah Khan, who understood the only way he could secure his position was to unify Afghans by provoking them into aggression against an enemy. By the time of the third Anglo Afghan war the British weren't even paying that subsidy, so the Afghans going to war to gain their "independence" is absurd, this was just something fabricated by Amanullah against a weak enemy to get the Pashtuns who were mostly conservative and nationalist on his side.
