    Happy Sunday everyone!! If you're curious about how they tune the open diff so well, I have a separate video on the subject! Even the McLaren P1 has an open diff: th-cam.com/video/gBHmWZcnWwM/w-d-xo.html.
    And if you're into photos, videos, and nonsense that goes on behind the scenes, consider following on the Instagrammies:

      open diff = bad. of course by removing the diff you lessen weight, but the car can't drift or slide very well.

    I think using the brakes to create some torque to split is a clever solution. The antilock brakes are already there and the same components can be used to apply and release the brakes when there is wheel slip. You get a simpler differential and I doubt that more than 20% of the total braking potential would ever be needed to split enough torque to the other wheel and get past the slippage.
    Thanks for posting this and your earlier video on this.

    Would you do a video on the best bang for your buck performance tyre? I realise it's a difficult subject to measure and compare; but I would find it interesting to see whether the Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup2's which are arguably the best performance tyre, would be the best value for money considering there extraordinary price.

    • @kylandaminick13
      @kylandaminick13 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing many high end tires but I do have the BFGoodrich sport comp 2 and they are the best cornering tire I've driven on. I have yet to even make them squeal around corners. Mind you t I've only driven them on the street so I can't push them to their full potential without getting in trouble. My only problem with them is that they are not good for comfort. They are so stiff that when you drive on grooved roads you feel the car follow them. Its really annoying but it is worth it if you are performance oriented. These are summer tires so I bought a second set of winter tires which is also great for grip. My 225/55/16 were only $101 per tire from tire rack plus shipping. they are definitely worth the price. oh yeah they are also great even in heavy rain, haven't hydro planed even once, making them good street tires.

    +Engineering Explained. I have a quick unrelated question I hope you will answer.
    I have a 3.0 24v straight 6 n/a. I want to turbo in the future but i need a exhaust manifold now.
    My question is could I install a turbo manifold and fabricate a blanking plate with gasket to run on n/a with minimal to no power loss? Would it work?

    • @Patrick94GSR
      @Patrick94GSR 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a blanking plate, you would need to fabricate a downpipe that attaches directly to the manifold where the turbo would normally attach. Usually it's a square-ish 4-bolt pattern. Then when you get the turbo you remove that downpipe, put on the turbo and attach a turbo-specific downpipe to connect to the exhaust. Theoretically possible but I'm certain it would be less efficient than using an actual equal-length header.

    Now while there is turbo lag at the bottom end, it compensates for it by having an 8000RPM redline. So your turbo-lag free range is between 4500-8000RPM, which is respectable. So realistically, when you're driving hard, you wont' notice the lag since you're gonna be in the higher half of the rev range.

    My favourite grey Wizard - can you do a video on why modern supercars are struggling to reach 200mph? Surely it cant just be down to aero. The McLaren F1 had 625hp and hit 230mph. The 812 SF has 800hp and can only hit 220mph. The Merc GT R has 600 and can't hit 200mph! WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MODERN SUPERCARS?!

    • @AnarchistMetalhead
      @AnarchistMetalhead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      aero does play a major role
      those are both classical coupes, not mid engine supercars
      not only are they much higher than the F1, but the difference in shape inevitably changes its balance and drag
      additionally nowadays manufacturers are going for more cornering stability, which needs downforce and wider tyres, instead of just outright speed

    You're half right. Supercars *CAN* have open differentials. But, supercars *SHOULD* have Electronic LSDs. This brake-vetoring that McLaren, Bentley, et al. are using is just a cheap cop-out for actual mechanical engineering. Case in point, One of the reasons McLaren depreciation is so bad is because they're, as my friend put it, "horrible to drive... little more than a blunt instrument" (and it should be noted, this individual owns both an updated 12C and a 458 spider). It's a car that is HORRIFYING to take to the limits. Chris Harris said that the P1 "was the first McLaren that is controllable past the limit," but he never had the confidence in the P1 that he had in the 918 and LaFerrari. Matt Farah spun the 570s press car, and he's not exactly what I'd call a "bad driver." That said, the 675LT I was in around Silverstone was fairly decent. I'd still prefer a 458 Speciale, GT3RS, or a Huracan Performante though. That 3.8l engine just has no character whatsoever. (but, it does have prodigious amounts of power)

    • @theeeMitchi
      @theeeMitchi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Supercars shouldn't have electronic LSDs, they should have proper, mechanical LSDs that don't cook your brake pads on a trackday

    • @flyingphoenix113
      @flyingphoenix113 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      ....Neither do electronic LSDs. Mechanical LSDs (particularly viscous and clutch-driven) can overheat during extended track use. This will most often lead to the diff only wanting to lock one way. Ask anyone who's driven a modern Aston Martin on track.
      Electronic LSDs tend to run significantly cooler than traditional viscous and clutch-driven differentials. They also have infinite variability which becomes increasingly important as you get into stickier tire compounds. Helical differentials (like the one you'll find in the FRS/BRZ/86) are an exception amongst mechanical diffs, but they're often a bit heavier and more cumbersome than the other types.

    • @bradenmchenry995

    • @b_mb4948
      @b_mb4948 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally, I'd go for some form of mechanical LSD, but nevertheless you are completely right. McLaren just don't have the stones to admit that they made a mistake.
      From what I remember, their main argument for using this whole brake-steer technology is that it is comparatively simpler then any kind of LSD, but that statement is rubbish - for reasons that I mentioned in another comment I made earlier...

    • @matthewmatthew638
      @matthewmatthew638 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Braden McHenry It's not about it being bad to drive, it's that torque vectoring by braking as opposed to proper LSD puts way more heat into your brakes, which is a terrible thing for track days.

    If it were truly just a track car I would venture a not guess and say there would be no traction control or open differential.

    Considering that you can still modulate individual wheel speeds while having some form of LSD fitted by means of brake bias (which is what McLaren wants to do), I can't understand why they - who strive to be at the forefront of automotive technology - decide to use the inferior open-diff setup?
    Their main argument, that it is mechanically simpler, and therefore more reliable to use an open-diff in conjunction with brake bias, is rubbish...
    (They call it "brake-steer", but it works by changing the lateral bias on the rear brakes, so I just say "brake-bias", because I am referring to the action of using the rear brakes in place of an LSD, and not necessarily the system as a whole)
    First off, this is McLaren, and when was the last time you heard of them doing something so it was simple/cost-effective rather then doing something so that it worked properly? Secondly, that whole brake bias system is WAY more complex then any LSD I've ever seen - especially when you take into account that you need sensors to measure individual wheel speed / brake force / brake line pressure (etc.) as well as all the computational power needed to make use of all that data! Just imagine how many possible points of failure there are! *O_O*
    Also, even if you used the 'fastest' electronic equipment available, there would still be some form of delay between an event at the wheels, and an action taken to account for it. Now compare that to something like a Torsen LSD that, using its purely mechanical "brain", locks up instantly* should one of the wheels start to spin up (of course there is a minute delay, but it is far less then any electronic equivalent - as far as I understand anyway).

      The main benefit I see is more lively steering in tight cornering. My guess is that went too far when designing the chassis and suspension to eliminate some undesirable oversteer that mid engine cars can have, and they ended up having to compensate for that through an open diff.

      Brodie Bennett so the price is lower for the mass market of people who dont even know what a diff is and just want to show off

      Brodie Bennett brake systems like this really are less complex than an LSD system. There are no extra sensors and parts in a system like this, the car already has ABS sensors that can calculate wheel speed. Processing power is very abundant in cars and you don't need some huge complex computer to calculate how much a wheel is spinning faster than the other. It's pretty simple really. Computers are cheap and when is the last time you personally saw a computer fail in a modern vehicle? Reviewers and racers running the McLaren's on racetracks are not complaining of brake fade and the front brakes do the majority of the work anyway. A system like this allows you to modulate exactly how much power is being put down at each rear wheel.

      Brodie Bennett even my 2000 BMW 3 series has this system.... It's nothing new and it's not complicated at all.
      And every Sensor you mentioned is Standard in 80% of todays cars
      But still, it's weird that Mclaren doesnt just use an LSD, Sounds just wrong

    Its so clever that not a single one of the race cars or track cars run an open diff and get a mechanical lsd.

    Why do you have turbo lag if you're already at 4k rpm?

    • @forrest225
      @forrest225 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Walter Black it may be at 4k, but the engine isnt loaded. When the engine is under load you will get more exhaust than you would just cruising at the same rpm.

    So the McLaren open diff works like Porsche Torque Vectoring, applying pressure in the inner wheel brake

    I think there are plenty of cars featuring ESP/ESC that apply brake to avoid a single wheel spin, am I wrong? It's a cheap but good replacement for a LSD. Anyway my car does not have ESP. :-(

    "Buffeting" Ok James May...Here's a test. Put one wheel in the gravel facing up hill and goose it. I can almost guarantee you that torque vectoring is BS. The track gives almost equal traction for all wheels all the time. That's great, its marketed as a street car so find out for us.
