that yard work is never ending. all my yard work stuff now is all battery . just a gas snow blower. been on the cold side in NY. not too bad. some light snow but does not stay. sun coming up higher. solar out put way up now. even cloudy days . nice to have multi MPPT controllers on a larger system. when a string goes down it's not a total loss. that beach ball does work in the middle of tank. we do that with swimming pool covers . a big inner tube works as well. now just figure out some level gauge for that tank and you wont have to list the cover to check. when you get a extra battery diss connect switch add that to the blue wall. will be easer and faster to reset things then having to take battery terminal off. a high amp breaker will also work. just push button and off. like the blue sea systems . I use them for RV installs.

Bob, All of my 100 watt panels that failed, 100% of the problem has been the solder will lift and break contact. NO diodes on mine have failed. But to your point, its always a good idea to get a baseline of production. Happy Easter from Gary in SE Mich.

It's that lead-free solder. If there is a RoHS label anywhere you can expect brittle solder joints and more subtle problems. My oven controller failed just out of warranty - solder joints on the relays had cracked. I resoldered with standard 60:40 electronics solder and those joints have been good for over 20 years now. (Wife still wants a new oven for some reason...)
15+ years ago my prior company was changing over to RoHS compliant products because customers were starting to express interest, but for all of the military contracts we were required to continue using lead solder -- the contracts explicitly forbid lead-free solder. This meant we had to set up a new line while keeping the old operational. One customer in the southwest started to report failures with recent but pre-RoHS equipment, and with our 25 year warranty we replaced it and started tearing down the returned units to find the problem. We examined inside a crystal (packaged in a metal can) using a scanning electron microscope (SCEM), that tin whiskers had grown up from the internal solder and shorted out the actual speck of quartz. Our supplier had, without changing the part number and without notice, switched us to a RoHS compliant component. That put a temporary stop to our RoHS transition. and I left before it was resolved. Lead has wonderful properties. Just be careful how you handle and dispose of it.
