    Heck yeah, I’ve been using LiTime balancers on my (4X12)
    48V stuff and each 12V battery in the series string is usually .01V or less apart as well!
    FYI those balancers can get warm if working hard. Mine are mounted on cement board.

    Now you have a 48V battery that will balance ALL 16 cells equally! All the 4 batterys will now follow each other with the same voltage. Congrats!! You now have a safe 48V system in my opinion. Thanks for sharing your videos of these everyday struggles that we DIY'ers is battle with... Love your videos!! Aloha from Norway, Europe. 🙂

    That balancer is a sweet little tool! It looks as if it’s forming a loop with all of your batteries, taking the top voltage of the highest battery voltage and distributing it to the other batteries to find the voltage equilibrium. This will continually happen when you have one battery that will retain a higher voltage And batteries that hold a lower voltage. It’s as if the higher voltage battery is charging lower voltage batteries. as you discharge the 48 V pack one battery will always discharge at a higher rate then the rest. What I mean to say is that the leadtime battery balancer will take care of the balance, but you will still be dealing with a dissimilar discharge rate. This should not be a big problem at all…. But worth keeping an eye on.

    Hi Bob, great little video...
    This would be a better test if you go above 13,5/13,8V. The voltage in LiFePO4 is flat during most of it's cycle. Try doing this above 13,8V or thereabout and see what happens.
    I would recommend this option if you have the batteries and really need to use them like this. A native 48V battery is less complex, works better and is the way to go.
    Even if these are cheaper versions, 4 of these will cost at least 1200 bucks. For that value you get a pretty decent 48v battery like your 90ah Power Queen.
    If you are doing this in the name of science I love it. If it would be a permanent system I would not...
    Thanks for the review and the usual "welcome back to the channel!"

    • @ProjectsinParadise808
      @ProjectsinParadise808  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with you, it's not ideal what I am trying. Would prefer a 48V battery for sure. I will charge it up, and discharge it tomorrow and see what happens. Been dinking around on that system all day today. But tomorrow, the rubber meets the road! Aloha!🤙

  • @junkerzn7312
    @junkerzn7312 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It's basically "connect it up and forget about it". I will note that the actual balancing only really matters when the voltage is near full. It will try to balance when the voltages are lower but it won't have much of an effect at lower voltages due to the flat charge/discharge curve of LiFePO4 .
    It will actually unbalance the batteries slightly at lower voltages and cause some extra sloshing around, but it isn't usually anything you worry about. Not ideal but still a decent solution for anyone with piles of 12V batteries that they don't want to put on a shelf.
    In anycase, if you want a more technical description I've put it in this paragraph. Basically at lower-than-full voltages it is very easy for the balancer to move the voltage a little in either direction, so making all the voltages the same is not hard to do at all. The actual state-of-charge, however, is not balanced because each individual battery has a natural resting range at any given state of charge that depends on minor differences in the battery cells... i.e. the voltages will be slightly different at the same state-of-charge. That is why the balancer operating down there actually unbalances the batteries slightly from each other when it equalizes the voltages exactly.
    Some extra sloshing of current between cells also happens. Theoretically this is "bad" for battery aging but realistically it has very little effect on LiFePO4 batteries. So in situations like this where the 12V batteries would otherwise be on a shelf doing nothing, one might as well put them to work!
    -Matt

    Nice!
    I uses 4 similar type (total 40A) and there is no problem using a 12V solar/wind charger on just one or other cheap 12V eqipment, (or multiple cells)
    as the balancer will fix it quite easy
    I actually run one 500W Victron 12V Inverter for my garage lights for the last two years
    Now i have boght four more of these to paralell old (not broken) Lead acid battery in four strings to add to my 100ish kWh 48V system
    I will add some cheap Shunts to each 12V string to monitor if some strings need to get a extra battery or some goes bad
    My system(Victron) is cycled between 52V and 57.6V This will drain the lead acid down to 13V and be top charged at 14.4V...
    I guess i can set my Victron to top up every 3 months.....(Both Lead Acid and the Lithium will last a looooong way (I got to pick LA batterys from a freind who runs a hardware store and takes return old batterys for recykleing here in Norway)
    Regards from Norway

    The Victron I believe can only balance current at 750mAh while the cheaper ones appear to be able to do same at 5-10Ah for half the price approximately. Cool that the 48v version can also be utilised with 36 & 24v system too. Moving forward will utilise these on future series connected batteries.

    I have this same balancer and it gets significantly hot to the touch like really hot. My cconfiguration is 4 lifepo4 batteries of same make in series. I taught it may had been a good touch to increase the longevity of my battery bank but i am having second thoughts. I measured the current comming of the leads with a clamp meter and only saw about 0.5 amp coming out a SINGLE battery and going to no where sometimes 2 batteries but no current coming in to any of the batteries (so basically -0.5 amps on the positive) so this leads me to believe that its not actively balancing but passively balancing, Another thing as well i would connect my volt meter to the batteries and sometimes I would see it drop to 0 volts back up to 13.2 .
    I think this weekend i am going to cut the wires. I don't know if i got a faulty unit or what, and for context both me and my dad who put the together are electrical engineers.

    I ordered one of those for my system, still assembling everything. My 4- 230Ah 12v's did not have the same voltage after initial charge, one was 12.88v so I wired them in parallel and they immediately were all 13.3v. I also bought a 5 pack of little volt meters to put on each battery to monitor the individual voltage after wiring in series with the balancer. Not sure if that will be useful but they were dirt cheap so why not.

    Nice. I have 2 banks that are 4x 12v 100ah Redodo batteries each. All are the same make and age, but I think I may get one of these and attach heavy duty clips at the ends. With the clips I would not have to take the battery bolts lose. The voltages do stay very close, but I could balance each bank if needed. I do dislike how messy the wiring starts to look. My batteries are enclosed in insulation to keep the temps from getting high or low, so I wouldn't see all of the wires, but hopefully the balancer could just be hooked up temporality if needed. I like Victron stuff but this seems much more simple than what they offer. Neat product.

    Your delta went from 17ma to 7ma. Makes me wonder if that balancer bleeds off excess current (like the Victron) or moves it from one battery to another. I'm guessing it's the latter, especially if the balancer isn't getting warm during the process.

    I have used these balancers on my lithium battery bank and found that my batteries drain faster when using them. I stopped using it because I didn't think it was worth it. I think these are more useful for lead acid batteries, since they are more prone to be off balanced.

    Looks like a clamp dc amp meter is in your future. I notice my balancer doing most of the work during charging cycle near absorption. Have the ones with the built in voltage meter. Be careful not to pull too much current and cause one of the batteries to go into protection. It will short out the balancer. Speaking from experience. Thanks for sharing!
