Is The New Lightweight Orbea Orca Worth the Money?

  • Orbea has just released the brand-new generation of the 2023 Orca. Orbea has been making the Orca since 2003 and now in its 7th generation, it should be rather good. 'Praise The Light' has been the catchphrase for the new bike, with it coming in at a claimed 6.6 kg, but is it any good? Sam Gupta has gone into the depth and scrutinised all the details to try and work out where this new bike actually sits in the market and if it's any good. Would you buy the brand new 2023 Orbea Orca?

    It's all going a full circle. Aero bikes & lightweight bikes then aero-lightweight bikes and now the circle is complete. I'd argue as a cycling enthusiast it really doesn't matter which bike you have, just go out and enjoy yourself is all that matters

    I've owned a number of different brand bikes in the past and when I recently decided to thin out my collection and go with just a few staple bikes, the ORCA is one of the ones I ended up picking. I've had an ORCA and ORCA Aero in the past and I loved them both. Weight of a bike is only going to waiver a pound or two either way so that doesn't matter to me anymore. It would benefit me to just be more fit. When I decided to settle with the Orbea it was because of it's value, fit, looks, performance, and the fact that it's not another of the Big 3 brands on the road. The fact that I'm Spanish also factors into my bias of the bike. There are probably better bikes out there but I'm not good enough to know the fine differences. If it's lighter, stiffer, faster, who cares?! Honestly, most of us are not in tune or good enough to know the differences. As long as the bike feels and rides good, and you like it, then that's the bike for you. The ORCA and the Tarmac are ones I've always come back to in terms of performance and comfort, but one is definitely more affordable and less common, and that's why I picked the Orbea. The marketing hype is all to sell you a bike. Get a bike you like or you won't ride it.

    Fair review- particularly around it not being particularly performance oriented. Being light is fun, but it isn’t fast. And also, thats pretty expensive for the top end and the low end isn’t really that light.
    Not the bike for me, but I like to see them trying new things

    I would bet that for the pros it's actually slower than the current model, even for climbing. Not that it matters for us normal people. It looks good and different in a world of dropped seat stays and aero profiles, and to enjoy a bike you dont need any of that

    If you’re ok to give away few hundred grams, by taking Ultegra instead of Dura Ace, and few others little « heavier » pieces, you can offer yourself a very lightweight bike for 6.000 £.
    Which is a bargain for this price and specs and stand out front its competitors.

    I can save more than a few watts on the flat by tucking my arms in and I don’t need to be aero on the descents.
    Saving watts on the climbs - where I am too slow for the 30kph aero advantages they speak of to kick in and where I might be out of he saddle acting as a sail - it’s far more useful to me to save watts on climbs and I’d wager the same for a load of Sunday riders.

    It's funny that being able to "customise" the bike by choosing the right stem and bar size etc. is now a "feature".. 🤣 In the past you'd have expected a retailer to swap out these things to fit you. Also, in my case I've always built all of my bikes from framesets anyway. Why not just do that if you want customisation?

    I dont think any bike costing £12k+ could be described as "for the masses"😮. I've often been tempted by Orbeas, mainly because they are less common than other brands and used to offer better value. I think they will struggle at Specialized/Trek/Cannondale/BMC pricing.

    • @graemehill
      @graemehill ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think 32c is fine isn't it? The french tire size system looks like 700x32c where the 32 means 32mm and the c means the rim size. It's common for people to shorten to just 32c and leave off the first part. Your way is fine too because we can assume c from context just like we can assume 700.

    There are two things that annoy me about recent bike designs and marketing: Why do Shimano brake discs (and Sram's latest Red crank) look like they have a swastika built in? And why do I alway need hear people uttering total nonsense like "x Watts faster"? Watts are used to measure power, speed is measured in meters per second or kilometers per hour! Build bikes that look good and they'd sell on their own without marketing claims that insult even a brain-dead person's intelligence.
