I’d like to think Perospero, Brûlée, Oven, and Daifuku we’re close to him, knowing about his mouth and all. It’s likely they grew apart over the years, but I don’t think he’d be completely without friends at his current age.
Zeno Kagemaru I feel like his siblings see him as an unstoppable force like big mom, so when Katakuri met luffy he found someone who saw that he isn’t perfect and will fight for his dream, in which Imo he respected.
I like how at the end of the fight, Luffy takes the extra hat and covers Katakuri's lower face. It's something that you see with a lot of the Strawhats serious fights, such as Luffy covering Sandersoina's slave mark and Franky wiping the tears from Senor Pink's eyes. It shows that whatever the outcome, they respect their opponent enough that they help to protect their secrets that they may have learned during the fight.
The real enemies of KK were those who mistreated him for his strength and appearance. KK realized that Luffy is the closest figure of a friend to him. KK revealed his nakedness to Luffy, but Luffy didn't run away. Therefore Luffy was the first person outside KK's family not to run away from him. That is why KK was even surprised that Luffy came back, even when he had the chance to run like everyone else. KK didn't have a reason to kill Luffy, because he discovered that Luffy was not like other people. How can you destroy the only love you have been searching for your whole life..? You would also allow it to take your life, so that others can experience it. If you know the pain you felt without it. In the end, Luffy covers KK's face with his hat. A message to KK that "I have your best interests at heart". Other people may have used that moment to show off how Imperfect and weak KK is and make a public mockery of him. But Luffy, shows love for KK more than hatered. Therefore Luffy is not driven by arrogance or hatred to fight. That is why he wins the people's hearts.
@@L9velantes your forgetting how vicious he was when he used his strings to literally destory dressrosa in order to become the young master... and also how he killed his own father
The strength of bonds can easily be stronger than the strength of family. A lot of BM pirates are loyal to Big Mom due to fear, whereas Doffy's family are loyal to him because they do in fact believe in him. There's a point in WCI where Perospero is like, "Big Mom, I guess you're the captain. So here's what's happened while you were hungry..." Yeah, if even your eldest son, currently leading the army against the Straw Hats, is having doubts, then your family ain't family man.
Big mom has the mentality of a kid. There’s no way she’ll care for about 80 of her kids like Doflamingo’s only close allies he’s been with since childhood
This made me realize, the most important difference between Luffy's past ennemies and Katakuri's is that when they beat him to a pulp and he came back claiming he could still win, they usually thought "Why won't he stay on the ground?". Katakuri thought "Why can't *I* make him stay on the ground?".
did you ever watch initial d? in some races they try to outrun an "inferior car" by just putting the pedal to the metal and be totaly shocked when takumi is still at their ass while he was slower in front of them.
Luffy's victories often seem to involve some mental component that unnerves his opponent a bit. The fight with Katakuri was less about unnerving him, and more so that Katakuri just started to respect Luffy and admit that he himself had faults
Everyone is missing the obvious here. Katakuri may surpass Luffy in power but not in his ability to digest food. Obviously his little doughnut break in the middle of combat backfired and caused him to admit defeat due to being stuffed with sweets. Honestly, you try boxing on a full stomach and see how many rounds you can last. #DoughnutDownfall
It was a Battle of Ideals. At first Katakuri seemed to be the Better version of Luffy. However it turns out Luffy Represents everything Katakuri wants to be. Someone who is accepted by his family despite all his faults Someone who is free and doesnt need to act like someone hes not. Everything else was properly addressed on this video. Luffy basically shattered Katakuri’s world. In the end Luffy gains Katakuri’s respect.
Yes and no, when the wound happens, by that time Katakuri had already begun to recognize the strength of Luffy and although the Flaamppe was an excuse for Oda to show us the true identity of Katakuri, his real goal was to weaken him, for someone like him. , the effect is to provoke a greater concentration, a greater enthusiasm, in other words, the battle did not have to change in the most minimum respect as it was minutes before the wound. Of course maybe Katakuri took away the weight he had of being so perfect and never being hit and that's why Luffy hit him. In the anime Luffy base fought more evenly with Kaatakuri for moments because he just wanted to assent the pleasure of the battle being the same, but never had to exhaust himself as he was able to see, because he had a much bigger motivation. When he fight against the G4 it was a rather short fight, but it was the true power of Kaatakuri, with that power he would have eliminated Luffy base from the beginning, in other words to say that Luffy mentally won is not correct because Luffy motivated Katakuri, thanks to Luffy could be who he really is, and upon receiving so few blows, he practically fell unconscious from the wound he had made.
I've heard this fight called "The man who never falls Vs. The man who always gets back up." Luffy's determination and simple, endearing nature really tend to get into his opponents' heads in one way or another. True to his fruit ability, he just keeps bouncing back.
It's an accurate statement in my mind! It came down to who had more to lose. Luffy's crew and dream meant more to him than Big Mom meant to Kataturi (hence why Luffy gets up many times in the fight after reaching his limit, but Katakuri doesn't even after just falling one time).
i think.. simply.. because its fun. with any and every story we know, height, weight, size, proportion is never really a distinct feature. I mean it kinda is but not exactly. In One Piece its all unpredictable yet sustainable. It doest really work, but, in One Piece it is and i think its so silly, as i do with the the whole crew and series. Its honestly just so exciting and fun to see weird ass, long ass, bonkers ass characters. I love it, you gotta love it too. You know you do.
one piece biology is silly. Humans live to like 180 years old. There's a lot of things to think about in one piece, heights ain't one of them though lmao
One Piece youtubers are usually ridiculously wack because they dive way too deep into interpretation and miss key factors but this was so spot on, good shit my guy
Actually most One Piece youtubers did not dive at all when it comes to this fight. They were all thinking in powerlevels and believed this fight was about physical strength.
Everything you said was reinforced after the fight when Brulee was tending to Kat's wounds. It was obviously a mental fight. Not to mention, Haki is very mentally draining.
Considering they fought for 8 hour, the Haki was draining. But use of Haki isn't mentally draining in general. It's like Nen once you learn to control it, it's second nature, it uses less stamina the more you practice.
@@UnrealAxel27 but katakuri isnt used to long, drawn out fights so. I guess its better to compare it to weight lifting than chess, even if you can lift a lot, so what if you get exhausted very fast because you didnt train stamina, and focused entirely on strength. katakuri's biggest weakness, was his own strength in a sense
@@user-dx8nj7qj2g neither was Luffy. Luffy never fought continuously for 8+ hours. They were both completely exhausted. The fight was one of ideals not attrition
@@UnrealAxel27 Actually, Luffy vs Cracker earlier in the arc was 11 hours. I know it's only the one example, but perhaps Oda deliberately made it last that amount of time at that exact point in the story not just so that it would fit the timeline of the arc well, but so that it would be clear to us how Luffy can keep up for long stretches of time. So that when Luffy vs Katakuri comes around, we understand that only 1 of them has had any experience with drawn-out fights recently.
@@evowarrior5 we don't fully know Katakuri's full backstory. We don't know if he has ever fought that long. He was equally exhausted as Luffy. The fight was not of endurance but ideals. Who beliefs were stronger. Luffy won because he was true to himself not because he lasted longer. They both got up at the end, but Katakuri gave up because he knew Luffy had the ambition and the potential to be greater than he was.
He means that it wasn't a defeat for katakuri, althrough he lost the fight, he got a lot of good stuff from this fight, (like freeing his mind from big mom ), at least enough to surpass his defeat, to let go some shit, so he was defeated, but it wasn't a loss for him (i guess that's what he meant idk)
Here's one advantage Luffy had: rubber stretches _back._ While Katakuri's attacks may be stronger, Luffy's are much more energy efficient. Take the Gattling Gun, Luffy's back and forth movement would mostly be powered by his own elasticity, each punch recycling the energy from the previous. Whereas Katakuri just has to throw each punch manually, much more tiring. Sure enough, as the battle became one of attrition, Luffy proved the more tenacious.
Well sorta, luffy has to fully extend for the recoil and it was showed when luffy first recieved the fruit he would has to have constant muscle control just to be able to move, walk, relax because his body would drag along.
@@cangirayicel7639 Plot armor is when characters win just because the plot says so, without any in-universe explanation of how. What I wrote was an in-universe explanation, so how is that plot armor?
@@cangirayicel7639 Just because tenacity got him through this fight doesn't mean it always will, just look at how he fared against Kaido not long after this. Even if it would, that's still not what the term 'plot armor' means.
Yeah it pretty much established that even die hard One Piece fans find Big Mom and a lot of her cronies to be annoying, even though there are a few badasses within them, Even her backstory is hated. Does she have complex reasons for going insane and when wanting specific food? No, she's just a born freak that loses her mind and uses her super strength to klll people when she goes into hunger fits. She was trained to be selfish because the woman who raised her was secretly evil? Its nonsense. Who would spend 80 years in poverty secretly getting super rich only to attempt to enjoy her wealth when she barely had any years left? Its a plot twist that makes no sense.
The best part about this fight was when Luffy went back into the mirror world to continue the fight. He could’ve easily escaped and left Katakuri trapped there but Luffy realized that he needed this fight to get stronger even if that meant getting the crap beat out of him for 12 hours. Current Wano Luffy would’ve never been as strong if it wasn’t for this fight.
Luffy also went in there because katakuri couldve gone through another mirror without luffy's notice, as the mirrors would tell which one belongs to the ship, and katakuri could get back on to the ship and destroy the mirror so they'd be trapped with katakuri on the ship. Luffy going into the mirror world means that if katakuri or someone starts shooting through the mirror, means he could smash the mirrors or warn his crew.
@@hydroking2969 lol no. Katakuri was trapped there with nothing to do except wait for brulee to get rescued or for luffy to get captured, also they wouldn't be able to shoot without brulee making contact with the mirror they wanna use and so he's real lucky that Luffy decided not chicken out of the fight for real
@@hidan407 most people will say Luffy beats Katakuri easily but I say Luffy will win but not as easily as people think. People act like Katakuri cant get stronger after that fight.
10:36 I think that it's not only the desire to further refine his haki to achieve _future sight_ that makes Luffy hold back on _Gear 4_ but also trying to learn more about his opponent. Throwing your trumph card in too early often leads to it being countered by some trumph card of the opponent; by draging things out Luffy learns more about Katakuri's abilities, and thus gets a better idea of how to use _Gear 4_ most efficiently
You’re an idiot then this fight was horrible in terms of logic. It’s a case of sacrificing consistency for story narrative which never should be the case when you could simply have consistency with the same narrative. Luffy was far too weak to logically win for no reason, why not make Luffy stronger before we reached this point OR in the case of Doflamingo add better context to the defeat
13:30 Thats why luffy answered Rayleigh's question about enemy's with great observation haki with "it depends on the character of the person". Damn... everythings so clear now
I ALWAYS have to bring up the "it depends of the character of the person" sentence in arguments about the fight. It really seems that all the people who talk shit about this fight have completely missed this. Its baffling sometimes how ignorant people are...
Katakuri saw that luffy could compete with him at that age ,he knows luffy will only get infinitely stronger .katakuri loves his brothers and sisters and understands they were never going to be safe while big mom is alive, hence he needs luffy for the future ,katakuri gave in
Great analysis. He has a keen eye for talented fighters. Add to the fact that he’s never had anyone be able to challenge him. Then comes along some kid who has the balls to talk crap to his mom, beat his brothers, and not back down. I feel as though he knew he didn’t want to actually kill luffy from the moment they started their fight, just because of how admirable of a person he (luffy) is. He admires luffys tenacity, courage, fearlessness, and most importantly his strength. Katakuri, like Kaido, found the fight they had been looking for their entire lives. A once in a lifetime foe. That’s my take
Great video, well said. I only have one thing to add. When Rayleigh asked Luffy (in the flashback) how he would deal with the extremely powerful and rare opponent that has some clairvoyance, seeing a few seconds into the future, Luffy did not say he even could. No, what he said was something like "it depends on their character" which intrigued Rayleigh which prompted him to ask Luffy to clarify his meaning. If Katakuri was more like Doflamingo or Eneru (perhaps there are better examples) yeah, Luffy could do nothing about it. But Luffy won due to Katakuri's character. Who he was mattered. And this is key because we are just meeting Katakuri. If so many other antagonists had Katakuri's power and ability in these circumstances, Luffy would be dead. But that is part of what makes it one of if not my favorite fight in One Piece. It is defined by the antagonist's character as much as Luffy's - if not more so - and Oda fucking nailed it.
So well said man, I was wondering how that scene tied into the fight and it makes so much sense now. I love how this fight is basically pirate duel, like the forming of respective rivalry. But that takes it to the next level of interesting!
This fight is the best thorough out the whole series , this fight gave me memories of Goku vs Jiren , although Goku was completely outmatched he still kept going , Luffy is the Goat , he is almost as bad ass as daddy Goku
You hit the nail on the head, it was a Battle of endurance, mental strength, power and sure will. How long can you last if you have to go above and beyond your norm. Having a multi hour long fight with someone who refuses to stay down. They're escaping death and little by little they're catching on to your method of combt, so you have to adapt . I bet Katakuri doesn't have long battles like this very often or at all. Having to keep throwing a storm of attacks which is tiring him and Luffy out. Remember fighters don't only get tired and wore out by getting hit but throwing too, Ali using Rope-a-dope won him the belt. All of that comes together after awhile. Not to mention he was using the advance levels of his Haki and Devil fruit
I'll bet many years from now, when Luffy finds the One Piece and becomes King of the Pirates, he'll be having little get togethers with Katakuri where they share a massive plate of doughnuts made by Sanji and tell stories of the good old days.
Well said brother... will said.... I made the mistake to listen to some manga reviewers through the WC arc and they totally messed up everything in my head. Especially, my view of Katakuri and Big Mom. The more I re-watched the arc the more I was able to see the psychology behind everything. The only thing I would add to your discussion is I also saw Katakuri's last words as a cry for help too. He's trapped in Big Mom's world and ideology without a way of escape. Katakuri know's Big Mom will definitely take him out if he tries to do his own thing. Luffy is now his way of escape, at the very moment he defeats Big Mom.
@@justdoingodswork .... I would more terrified of Big Mom now... she is deeply schizophrenic, having a 6yr old child and a grown old school woman operating on the inside. Everything in Tottoland is a reflection of her mental state. This arc definitely tackles the deep, dark, sadistic side of psychology.
lol Pretty much none of the more famous manga reviewers on youtube really understood this fight and they almost all only had powerlevels in their head when "analyzing" it. It was pretty unbearable, so much that I unsubbed some of them.
Big mom didn’t like pudding for her three eyes witch she can hide easily but katakuris mouth can’t be hidden constantly(as seen with luffy breaking into his Mochi house) big mom only values you if your useful and fits her image of perfection Maybe katakuri was just tired of his mother’s cruelty? He did ask if luffy would come back And her children weren’t too upset when she went over a waterfall in wano they were talking about who would replace her Most leaning toward katakuri himself I’d personally love to see more of Katakuri and his eternal coolness
@@tiamindamanik8719 Doesnt mean he will simply get himself killed by a pirate. Senpukku is a tradition of honor and to avoid losing the honor by being captured or killed by a honorless person. Kaido is afraid of the foretold future to lose and so he seeks suicide before ruine.

He blames the whole series to suck for some shit in the animie too when the manga is the original work. he's the least fuckiing reasonable faggot in the world. In japanese, which iis the fucking ORIGINAL language from the ORIGINAL source, the word "hige" means BOTH Mustache and Beard, so it works perfectly well that Whitebeard has a mustache, becuase it wasent meant to be made for english readers in the fucking first place! Katakuri is my favorite "villain" until now. I don't consider him a villain tbh, he doesn't seem like he has any evil intent, his values consits of being Big Mom's right hand man and defending his siblings, which there is nothing wrong with. Yes, Big Mom is evil, but just like and right hand man of any captain of any pirate crew, he's loyal to his captain(kind of, they all fear Big Mom). And to any family, he loves his siblings. That's just the environment he grew up in. I think that fight with Luffy humbled him a lot, he didn't care about laying down on his back, didn't care about those guys taking pictures of him with his mask off, and even acknowledged Luffy to be somewhat close to his own strength towards the end of the fight. When he asked Brulee if Luffy escaped Big Mom's territory and she told him that he did, he looked to his side and gave a little smirk. Katakuri wants to see what Luffy will become, he gained alot of respect for Luffy imo.
I am not exaggerating when i say this is among the best one piece videos there is. you have a far greater understanding of the story and character here than the vast majority of people. it brightens my day that there are people in this world that still use their brain for more than basic needs. this was not just enjoyable for me but actually improved my day. thank you very much, not only for taking the time to produce this. but existing you wonderful person. have a great day!
Absolutely amazing video that highlights why this fight may probably be one of my favorite fights in the whole series. Honestly, it really frustrates me seeing people list this fight off as plot armor without understanding the underlining themes of the fight. Oda is such an amazing writer
Well-said. Surprised me how many people are so narrow-minded to instantly write something off, whether it be plot armor or in other scenarios in life. Glad there are still people who look beyond the point. My personal feeling is it's not so much intelligence that enables this, but many people just don't even try to understand emotion/thought that went into writing
+Sasuke kuniski Yes, I’m a sheep for being able to understanding the themes of the fight and able to judge the fight properly without spewing buzzwords like plot armor. Just like I said, I’m not wasting time with someone as ignorant as you.
Because luffy has just the "weight" and determination. Katakuri from the start knows Luffy isn't a threat to his family, he's just enjoying the fight. If for example say Blackbeard attacks WCI, Katakuri will let all hell loose.
I'm happy you are able to see one piece differently from others and not just see it as another battle shonen. Like you said and agree one piece isn't perfect nothing is of course. But when it comes to fight scenes I'm glad you can see and understand the perspective and reason behind the fight scenes and characters of course not everyone will agree but that's just human nature but as always fantastic video and I'm really glad you chose to go through with it.
@@KurokamiNajimi of course its head cannon, but honestly everything you read into things without proof is head cannon. when ppl read books and see the themes and nuances and talk about all the intricacies of media. thats all head cannon, until the writer comes out and says yes this is what it is. he said it was his interpretation of the fight, but imo it was pretty accurate
The majority of the time the narrative is made 100% clear, especially in One Piece. All this fight is is Oda bullshitting Luffy through a 3rd major fight while further characterizing and ultimately developing Katakuri. Before Katakuri falls he coughs up blood and it's stated multiple times he was defeated. If Oda wanted us to think Katakuri just didn't have the will to continue he'd just have Katakuri thinking that to himself, Luffy implying it to Sanji, etc. Granted if we see Katakuri again it could be explained at that time and Oda has just us on the edge about it on purpose.
I think this makes complete sense, as based with the flashback scene during this fight with Luffy and Reighleigh where Luffy says “it depends on the person” when referring to how he will beat these ‘strong’ opponents
Yeah, and before Luffy transformed into Snakeman he said he accepts the challenge and does not interfere with Luffy transforming anymore. That is just how great the development of Katakuri in this fight is.
@Dancing Swords Compared to the anime the pacing of the manga is way faster. The art is pretty good but do miss color. The manga itself is a fairly easy read. The plot is pretty much the same. In addition there are small details like cover stories and Q & A's with Oda. They are mostly comedic but they do have some cool info (this is also where GLR gets most of his useless facts).
Snake Man’s form is probably reflective of gear 2 in which it’s a lot faster than Bounce Man at the cost of Power. Perhaps this evolution is the result of Luffy figuring out that he doesn’t need to beat Katakuri in overwhelming strength. He saved stamina by reducing his bounce man figure, keeping his durability and directing his strengths else where. Pretty much this has been said in the video tho.
Agreed! I see so many people talking about "Well this dude lost to this other dude so obviously the second dude is stronger" when one piece exists to challenge that simple power scale argument. Yes, power scaling does exist, but it's not everything. Enel based on power scale was leagues away from Luffy, and it wasn't even close, but Luffy had a hard ability counter. Then you have this fight which as GLR sums up perfectly, has far more to do with ideology than it does combat prowess. And that's most of the fights actually, but this one has it so deeply to its core.
This video changed my outlook on this fight. My original opinion was that all these powerhouses are so strong but they’ve rarely/never experienced a fight where blows are exchanged. In result they can’t hold up as far as endurance & defense when this occurs. Bravo 👏🏾 great video👌🏾. Thanks for teaching me about plot armor.
Just caught up with the manga and this fight is always in my mind, because it is up to your own interpretation on how luffy won. I always thought that after the merienda, katakuri is just testing luffy if he is capable on taking big mom, seeing how katakuri cares for his brothers and sisters, while big mom kills them without acknowledging it. I already know of his facade as a perfectionist, but this video shows that ideals can be a powerful weapon to defeat or submit an opponent, which truly makes this fight mire magnificent than it already is. Thanks man.
I totally agree! This is a great fight and one of the best in the series. Bad guys are what makes or breaks a story (in my opinion) and Katakuri is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. This fight and the change in character for him is epic to say the least. Keep up the great content!
One Piece has a ridiculous amount of opposition to the main characters on so many levels, even just in Wano. Some of the most top-tier overwhelming opposition I've seen in anything.
An awesome baddie indeed. And I love the fact he doesnt have an annoying sound or word after every sentence. I almost cut my own ears off during the "shi lu lu lu luu" arc, that was like chalkboard scratching to my ears.
perfect analysis, and to add even more on the layers of this fight : - It takes place in the mirror world, and Luffy and Katakuri both evolve as a mirror of each other, Katakuri sees in luffy his weakness of not being able to be himself and get rid of it during the fight, Luffy sees his lack of skills in Observation Haki and try to see the future during the fight. - Both characters are representative of their devil fruit, at the beginning of the fight when Katakuri say that Luffy could never match him, Luffy answers "Ruber will not loose to mochi", and that's exactly what happens. When you hit mochi, it stays in the shape in was pounded into, on the other hand rubber bounce back and looks like you didn't touch it. That's exactly what happens here, Luffy always comes back while Katakuri can't. That is also the call back to all the Paramount war saga, Luffy can bounce back because he has already failed and lost so much, but, as Shanks said just before leaving the grave of ace and Whitebeard, "the important for a man is to be able to stand up and come back after a defeat", and that is where Luffy ha what Katakuri doesn't have, he knows that you can fall, it's not a problem if you get back up, while Katakuri thinks that just laying on your back is a shame. - At the question who won this fight, my answer is both of tham, Luffy won the fight itself , but Katakuri won something more important to him than the fight, he left his burden of being perfect. the question who lost this fight, the answer is Big Mom, she prooved herself to be a terrible mother whose children change side when they meet someone like luffy who match their desire instead of the very selfish LinLin. That's also what happened with Pudding and Sanji by the way.
Yeah also to add Luffy didn’t even sleep the night before the paramount war which was right after he had to break out of impel down. Plus katakuri says that the fight used up a lot of his energy to the chefs right before he eats the donuts, and that’s not even that far into the fight. And I think Luffy wouldn’t have been able to hit still in snake man if he didn’t train his observation haki first
Imagine being a One Piece fan you're whole life and reading how willpower is an active force in the world, and having the determination to make your own path against impossible odds is more important than raw power. Imagine being a One Piece fan you're whole life and not picking up on these themes and care about fights over other aspects of the story.
This fight got me back into one piece. My friend who was messaging me through the arc will know that I was DUMB STRUCK ON HOW He’d WIN. And the fight really took a different direction then I thought. And KATAKURI became my favorite.
This analysis was really good, thanks it cleared up a lot, but what really frustrated me as an anime only watcher was how long they took to complete the fight and how many times they deviated from it half the time i didn't even realise what was going on in the fight as they just kept going back to Big mom chasing the ship, it was just really frustrating, I only really enjoyed it when i watched the unadulterated fight on youtube without the cut aways to big mom.
Wasnt an issue for me as I was a dub only watcher who got tired of waiting and binge watched all the way through the ark caught up at the end of the fight 😂
I just want to say that when this video came up for me, I thought "Oh man, another shitty bit of clickbaity, barely explained theory just made for One Piece fans to click on to generate ad revenue." You know, like most other OP (or even general anime) videos out there. But I was wrong. You totally nailed it, and you intelligently explained and supported your argument. One that I happened to already agree with, but I'm so used to seeing stuff that's either preaching to the choir or being intentionally contrarian to rack up views. But no, this was spot on, very well argued and supported and very insightful. So on the off-chance that you read this, I want to give you a very heartfelt thank you for this video.
Thanks for quite possibly the most amazing comment I've ever received! This channel aims to stand apart from others by being clear, concise and relevant to the topic at (almost) all times. So I'm thrilled to hear you got something out of this!
The thing that I always thing with Luffy vs anyone is that he doesn't take environmental damage. If a normal person is punched whilst the attacker is using armament haki, then goes flying into a wall, they take two hits, one from the punch hitting them and the other from them hitting the wall. With Luffy that's only ever one hit, because; whilst the attacker is using armament haki, the wall (probably, because Pica exists lol) isn't using armament, so Luffy wouldn't be damaged by it. I often thing that this is a reason he can take much more apparent damage than he deals and still physically remain the victor. Whilst he wasn't physically the victor, this passive ability of his probably highly contributed to Katakuri's inability to bring him down.
One important thing I can remember is right before the fight finished. The flash back to when Rayleigh was talking to luffy. Luffy said it depends on the person. And Rayleigh laughed saying he never thought about it like that. Luffy doesn’t need to be the strongest to advance to the end. His true nature changes peoples perspective around him.
Fandom of things like One Piece is always frustrating to me. You have so many big fans but all they see is the fight. They don’t pay attention to anything other than that. Sure they hear/read the words but the ignore context. They ignore subtext. The don’t think about what is actually going on and what is being said. Hence why everything is chalked up to plot armor and lazy writing. You summed it up very well. It’s good to know there are big fans out that that really pay attention.
Or it's over-analyzing. It definetly is. Changes in Katakuri's personality only account for small parts of this fight. Luffy beat Katakuri by outsustaining him and learning from him. And, no, that last scene of him correcting his fall position is not "letting him win because he's impressed"
Jan Settler I think him correcting his fall position is him saying he no longer cares what people think of him and his reputation, he also showed that when he fully revealed his face mid fight, he’s thanking luffy for freeing him of that mindset
@@jansettler4828 Or you're just bad at reading? ....... Luffy had stronger will, and Katakuri lost his will to fight and gave up. I don't see how it could be interpreted in any other way. Why is that so hard to understand? I thought true One Piece fans would understand since Oda focuses so much on peoples will. Fighting for what you believe in, and your determination to make your own path against impossible odds is one of the most important aspects in Oda's storytelling. But the fanbase ended up hating this fight because the fighting wasn't hype enough. I lost a lot of respect for some One Piece youtubers that day. People who only want cool fights are children.
@@jansettler4828 He actually did. You just read it wrong. Katakuri deep down thinks Big Mom causes more harm than good to their family. Oda even says Katakuri had to step up and be the responsible family member, because Big Mom was too childish and selfish. "Someday... will you come back here... to defeat Big Mom...?" "Of course! I am the man who will be the Pirate King!!!" "You're looking pretty far into the future..." After that, Katakuri collapses because there's no more reason to fight. Luffy broke him. Later when talking to Brulee, he even outright says he fell onto his back on purpose. Didn't realize Oda needed to make it anymore clear than it already was. Come on, my guy.
The way I see it, this fight ended with no clear winner. After the last hit luffy was unable to fight and katakuri lost all reason to fight. Also, that last comment from katakuri felt like it had a "i want a proper rematch so I'll be waiting" kind of subtext.
Ngl Luffy been kinda looking stupid this whole timeskip the only one he really beat is hordy and Cesar and after that he became trash and I have reasons 1-the fight with doflamingo Luffy beat him all because law used gamma knife and fucked up doffy organs but doffy was still putting up a fight with fucked up organs and survived round 1 looking for Luffy while Luffy got help from towns people to hide him while he recovers doffy was also beating him and law in a 2v1 don't mind trebol cuz he really wasn't doing shit so basically a healthy doffy would shit stomp gear 4 Luffy 2-fight with katakuri this battle Luffy was getting his ass beat back to back to back only time Luffy had a chance was when he pissed katakuri off so he couldn't focus his haki Luffy even had a hidden form snake man just to get his ass beat again and was unable to fight while katakuri was standing and could've still beat his ass but katakuri let Luffy go cuz he wants him to beat big mom and free his family 3-when he tried to fight big mom Luffy wasn't tired or anything she basically one shotted gear 4 Luffy by blocking his punch with one arm 4-this wasn't even a fight with kaido because he was just letting Luffy hit him to test his strength then when he got tired of Luffy he one shotted him like he was nothing So basically Luffy been shitty the whole time after time skip
@@ltay352 It’s not that he’s trash, it’s just that he is brave enough to challenge top pirates despite being new to the New World. Doffy was one of the strongest pirates with an awakened devil fruit. Big Mom and Kaido are Yonkos with the biggest pirate fleets in the world. And also in the Manga, Luffy never hit Kaido like that and just got one shot. Toei animation added that to make the episode 20 minutes
@@ltay352 I am reminding you that, Luffy against doffy was totally one sided Luffy overpowered him with gear4th , if Luffy intend to kill Doffy he could have destroyed him in the beginning using Bounce man or snake man which was way out of league for Doffy, in case of Katakuri Luffy was weaker in terms of Haki, strength but he was as fast as Katakuri and he had way more endurance than Katakuri, he just dodged the trident which could actually kill Luffy but punches won't and at last he caught up to Katakuri and won because of his endurance which was lacking in Katakuri.
Oh man this was so far my favourite fight so far. I love everything about it. How Luffy puts the hat on him in the end. How Katakuri said "You see far into the future." Oh my! totaly agree with you! This was explained extremely well and to me it is satisfying that this fight was more than just a knock down drag out, this was a fight about self reflection, humility, and respect things that everyone need to have. Great video my guy definitely deserves a million subs
During the final clash, (in the anime at least) Luffy gets his hit in a split second before Katakuri’s attack connects and you see Katakuri’s eyes go slighlty blank white signifying that that was a KO caliber hit by Luffy. When Katakuri’s attack hits Luffy, Luffy’s eyes stay how they are but he still winced. Signifying that the blow had been softened and didn’t affect Luffy as much as it should have. Crazy detail I noticed
12:50 luffy only fell first because the group callapsed underneath him! katakuri fell because of the hit, and luffy reacted first in getting up, although not completely, but he still reacted first.
Another supporting scene to this interpretation is the fact that flampe says that explicitly “the perfect katakuri is dead” right after he reveals who he really is and tells luffy he respects him. Always thought that wording was so weird but with this in mind its clear what oda was trying to do!! ANOTHER piece of evidence to support this is the fact that at the start of the fight Katakuri makes it a point to not let luffy power up and just tries to dispatch of him quickly - since at that point he is just another pest and inconvenience in his way and a potential threat to his mama (soon to be big mom) that should just be put down quickly - however in the finally scenes of the fight katakuri literally says to luffy ill accept your challenge and implicitly says by waiting show me your snakeman form. This change in behaviour is just more evidence that by the end of the fight katakuri was interested in luffy and not so worried about defeating him for anyone else but was fighting for his own curiosity and I think testing luffy.
This is, I think, one of the best OP analyses I have heard in a very long time. Ever since WCI, we have been seeing that the “fights” the SHC will have are a mix of psychological and physical: the Yonko rule through sheer force of will-which is described by others as physical prowess- however, there is also much to be said about their mental strength (and weaknesses), as well as that of their crew. Each battle the Straw Hats fight from now on will test their wills, not just their muscles. I truly believe Haki is more than what we are seeing atm- it is the expression of a strong will to be the best. It “blooms in adversity.” as Rayleigh said. This is what I dislike power- scaling: there is too much emphasis on who is PHYSICALLY stronger: OP has never really been about that. I believe that new argument can be made; shifting the scaling of wills and how Haki will “blossom” as the series progresses.
I've been wondering about this battle and trying to make sense of it all and figured something along those lines without really being able to formulate it into words. But I think what you say is pretty much what we should take out of it so now all i gotta do is send them link to your video :) ty
Easily my favorite fight in one piece. Kaido v luffy was more explosive, but this was more impactful to the respective characters I feel like. Aside from gear 5, this fight had a lot more weight in defining Luffys and especially Katakuris character and I hope he comes back in full force as an ally to the straw hats in the final battles.
wow, honestly man this a spectacular analysis, seriously spot on, everything was explained perfectly. Glad you took the time to makes this video. Keep it going.
i love the way you worded this, when i try to explain fights like this people always focus on who's stronger and why they are better but this really shows that there's always more than that
Amazing analysis! Very, very well done, GLR! I genuinely think Oda would be proud a reader plumbed so much from this electrifying encounter! Thank you for the wonderful content!
Kataruki could finish their fight in just 1episode, but he didn't cause he already noticed luffy will and bravery, attacking big mom one of the yonko's without being afraid, he admired him. So he intentionally testing luffy strength while training him to improve his haki, expecting that someday luffy will free them from the abused of bigmom. He's a guy who only wants to protect his brother/sisters.
I just think katakuri gave up. He was heavily injured and exhausted, and in the end when Luffy screams at him that of course he'll come back to defeat big mom, katakuri realizes he cant stop him. That the fight could just keep going on and on and he'll probably not win because of Luffy's spirit. I guess it was just luffy's determination that won the fight... Plus some plot armor.
@@uhuhhuhhh wym??? lol bro luffy was straight up getting clobbered for like 3-4 episodes. it was straight up plot armor, but in the end Luffy's character was what determined the victor.
(before watching) Katakuri was a fighter of honor, and after seeing Luffy's determination to win (and defeat Big Mom) I think he gained respect for Luffy. I don't think he just let Luffy win, he just didn't have the motivation to fight him anymore.
Thank your for your analysis man because it’s crazy how people think Kat gave luffy the win. It was a battle of ideals to a fact that both fighters taught each other valuable lessons. Luffy became a more patient fighter and Kat finally was able to be himself. Oda has been emphasizing luffys tenacity, persistence, and endurance since the very beginning. For example, he chased ace every day when they were kids till ace finally gave in. Also luffy goes into all of his fights the underdog the only exception is blueno because he beat his ass real fast. But go back to rob lucci fight were luffy was also suppose to lose. He held out till he was able to figure lucci out and that’s the same thing that happened with doflamingo and Kat. Luffy just refuses to let pain get the best of him till a point he exhausts his opponents and eventually figures them out. I think people got lost in the sauce cause of all the power but forget to realize one very important thing about fighting, and that is to impose your will on your opponent which luffy does perfectly against Kat. Held out against Kat till he was out of his comfort zone.
Also my last point which is the most important is that Kat wants to free his brothers and sisters from big mom that’s why he asked luffy will he come back and fight her. If you can beat me, then you can take out my mom and I can finally be free. Kat won’t fight his mom of course cause that’s his mom so he needs someone strong enough to do it.
Fantastic analysis, mate. Luffy didn't "win" because of plot armour. The themes of this intense battle were much, much deeper than just a strength contest. Great job, GLR.
Can I just say I'm really impressed with your analysis here. I watched all the fight and in the end my mind was racing as to why it ended that abruptly. After watching this my mind is clear and I'm 100% with you. Also my intutition just liked Katakuri from the beginning, so ... hope we'll see him allying with luffy at some point *fingers crossed*
Luffy is probably the closest thing to a friend in Katakuri's life now
I’d like to think Perospero, Brûlée, Oven, and Daifuku we’re close to him, knowing about his mouth and all.
@@1234fivedude maybe thats why he let him win. he was sick of his lifelong "streak"
More of pure rival
@@Sagasking14 yeah but outside friends and family are a different thing
Karel Mclean senor pink vs Franky was dope. Especially Senor pinks back story, WCI arc was incredibly sad as a whole.

I find it odd that Doflamingo seems to respect and value his makeshift family a lot more than Big mom and her blood family...
but considering how strong big mom is on her own i can see why

Because plot armor
Luffy's victories often seem to involve some mental component that unnerves his opponent a bit. The fight with Katakuri was less about unnerving him, and more so that Katakuri just started to respect Luffy and admit that he himself had faults
I blame Garp for Luffy's endurance, the guy has been beating him with haki since Luffy was a kid

Everyone is missing the obvious here. Katakuri may surpass Luffy in power but not in his ability to digest food.
Very insightful
I like this a lot 😊👍👍👍
its like katakuri is the physical goal luffy has and luffy the mental goal katakuri now knows he needs
Colin Vaudaux Truth my brother, truth 👍👍👍
The man who always gets back up."
Luffy's determination and simple, endearing nature really tend to get into his opponents' heads in one way or another.
Im just now realizing that his devil fruit matches his personality like no other. Wow.

It makes the confrontation more interesting because size doesn't matter
Because their mom is a giant

One Piece youtubers are usually ridiculously wack because they dive way too deep into interpretation and miss key factors but this was so spot on, good shit my guy
Cheers! :D

Oda = GOAT

Not to mention he was using the advance levels of his Haki and Devil fruit
exactly that, is better then the video.
I'll bet many years from now, when Luffy finds the One Piece and becomes King of the Pirates, he'll be having little get togethers with Katakuri where they share a massive plate of doughnuts made by Sanji and tell stories of the good old days.

Yawn.
I thought the same, Katakuri definitely asked Luffy to help. :-)
Dude that "Katakuri crying for help" thing seriously great thought
@@justdoingodswork .... I would more terrified of Big Mom now... she is deeply schizophrenic, having a 6yr old child and a grown old school woman operating on the inside. Everything in Tottoland is a reflection of her mental state. This arc definitely tackles the deep, dark, sadistic side of psychology.
Damn crying for help is definitely mind blowing
lol Pretty much none of the more famous manga reviewers on youtube really understood this fight and they almost all only had powerlevels in their head when "analyzing" it. It was pretty unbearable, so much that I unsubbed some of them.
Wow, this analysis puts everything I've been feeling about this fight into words. Well done, really well done!

Big mom didn’t like pudding for her three eyes witch she can hide easily but katakuris mouth can’t be hidden constantly(as seen with luffy breaking into his Mochi house) big mom only values you if your useful and fits her image of perfection
Maybe katakuri was just tired of his mother’s cruelty?
He did ask if luffy would come back
And her children weren’t too upset when she went over a waterfall in wano they were talking about who would replace her Most leaning toward katakuri himself
I’d personally love to see more of Katakuri and his eternal coolness
Luffy had motivation to stand up, katakuri really didn't.

Well-said. Surprised me how many people are so narrow-minded to instantly write something off, whether it be plot armor or in other scenarios in life.

trash dumb fight. luffy lost
imaging losing to Luffy in a mental fight
It's not that he's smart in the common sense, he's just way more driven to his goals than most people. That determination was what Katakuri lost to
That is not what you think it is.
Because luffy has just the "weight" and determination. Katakuri from the start knows Luffy isn't a threat to his family, he's just enjoying the fight. If for example say Blackbeard attacks WCI, Katakuri will let all hell loose.

This was a welcomed suprise from you. I'm liking this channel more and more!

I think this makes complete sense, as based with the flashback scene during this fight with Luffy and Reighleigh where Luffy says “it depends on the person” when referring to how he will beat these ‘strong’ opponents
10:50 katakuri stopped his transformation attempt before and even said "why should I wait for you to transform"
Yeah, and before Luffy transformed into Snakeman he said he accepts the challenge and does not interfere with Luffy transforming anymore. That is just how great the development of Katakuri in this fight is.
Katakuris evolution was beautiful. Definitely one of my favorite characters, I hope we see more of him.

Amazing! I'm glad to hear you've made the jump! :D
MAD Master001 yes glad your reading the manga 👍👍👍
Dancing Swords I didn’t watch the anime
@Dancing Swords Compared to the anime the pacing of the manga is way faster. The art is pretty good but do miss color. The manga itself is a fairly easy read. The plot is pretty much the same.
In addition there are small details like cover stories and Q & A's with Oda. They are mostly comedic but they do have some cool info (this is also where GLR gets most of his useless facts).
I suggest reading the colored manga if you get the chance
Snake Man’s form is probably reflective of gear 2 in which it’s a lot faster than Bounce Man at the cost of Power. Perhaps this evolution is the result of Luffy figuring out that he doesn’t need to beat Katakuri in overwhelming strength. He saved stamina by reducing his bounce man figure, keeping his durability and directing his strengths else where. Pretty much this has been said in the video tho.
Thank You! Thank You! This video is needed for the community.

Sasuke kuniski on what?
This video explains the fight very well.
This fight and the change in character for him is epic to say the least.

perfect analysis, and to add even more on the layers of this fight :
- It takes place in the mirror world, and Luffy and Katakuri both evolve as a mirror of each other, Katakuri sees in luffy his weakness of not being able to be himself and get rid of it during the fight, Luffy sees his lack of skills in Observation Haki and try to see the future during the fight.

Holy shiet! You made me love this fight 1 million times more.

youre a sheep
This fight is stupid
One of your best grand line reviews yet. Good job mate!
Thank you, good sir!
@@IbbyMelbourne If Katakuri "gave up" Oda would write it very differently.
@@jansettler4828 He actually did. You just read it wrong. Katakuri deep down thinks Big Mom causes more harm than good to their family. Oda even says Katakuri had to step up and be the responsible family member, because Big Mom was too childish and selfish.
"Someday... will you come back here... to defeat Big Mom...?"
"Of course! I am the man who will be the Pirate King!!!"
"You're looking pretty far into the future..."
After that, Katakuri collapses because there's no more reason to fight.
Ngl Luffy been kinda looking stupid this whole timeskip the only one he really beat is hordy and Cesar and after that he became trash and I have reasons
1-the fight with doflamingo Luffy beat him all because law used gamma knife and fucked up doffy organs but doffy was still putting up a fight with fucked up organs and survived round 1 looking for Luffy while Luffy got help from towns people to hide him while he recovers doffy was also beating him and law in a 2v1 don't mind trebol cuz he really wasn't doing shit so basically a healthy doffy would shit stomp gear 4 Luffy
2-fight with katakuri this battle Luffy was getting his ass beat back to back to back only time Luffy had a chance was when he pissed katakuri off so he couldn't focus his haki Luffy even had a hidden form snake man just to get his ass beat again and was unable to fight while katakuri was standing and could've still beat his ass but katakuri let Luffy go cuz he wants him to beat big mom and free his family
3-when he tried to fight big mom Luffy wasn't tired or anything she basically one shotted gear 4 Luffy by blocking his punch with one arm
4-this wasn't even a fight with kaido because he was just letting Luffy hit him to test his strength then when he got tired of Luffy he one shotted him like he was nothing
So basically Luffy been shitty the whole time after time skip

I love every single second of this video

Best explanation so far. Katakuri is easily one of my most favorite characters but even I understood why he lost. These fanboys need to calm down.
A shonen manga that doesn’t directly tell you the emotions of the characters. Unheard

The best part about finding your channel just recently is that you have A LOT of videos to keep me busy
I literally couldn't agree more with this analysis. Great video as always
Cheers! :D
14:57 "just like Katakuri, its not perfect" LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL LMAAAAAAO
I love this.... Explain more fights
This just isn’t true
@@hoziasrain165 It is true though
I just think katakuri gave up. He was heavily injured and exhausted, and in the end when Luffy screams at him that of course he'll come back to defeat big mom, katakuri realizes he cant stop him. That the fight could just keep going on and on and he'll probably not win because of Luffy's spirit. I guess it was just luffy's determination that won the fight... Plus some plot armor.
@@erickbenavidez5724 you ain’t even watch the video 😭
@@uhuhhuhhh wym??? lol bro luffy was straight up getting clobbered for like 3-4 episodes. it was straight up plot armor, but in the end Luffy's character was what determined the victor.
(before watching) Katakuri was a fighter of honor, and after seeing Luffy's determination to win (and defeat Big Mom) I think he gained respect for Luffy. I don't think he just let Luffy win, he just didn't have the motivation to fight him anymore.
he let him win period
@@sasukekuniski1959 basically what it means lol
Thanks! :D
luffy won because katukuri wanted him to. aka plot armor
@@sasukekuniski1959 do we even watch the same video?
Can I just say I'm really impressed with your analysis here. I watched all the fight and in the end my mind was racing as to why it ended that abruptly. After watching this my mind is clear and I'm 100% with you. Also my intutition just liked Katakuri from the beginning, so ... hope we'll see him allying with luffy at some point *fingers crossed*
