Luffy vs Katakuri is a literal embodiment of the idiom "unstoppable force meets an immovable object". Luffy being the unstoppable force refusing to stay down and Katakuri the immovable object who refused to falter.
One of my favorite things that Luffy does in the fight is at the end, he puts his cover hat onto Katakuri's face, knowing he doesn't like others seeing it
Yeah, Luffy hit his limit a long time ago but was able to mentally lean on his friends for more strength. When Katakuri hit his limit, his mind went to a mother and a crew who mostly just shallowly saw him as an asset of strength. Therefore, when his mother was on the line, he simply couldn't find those unbreakable feelings that are required to get up selflessly like Luffy did countless times.
@@sauceriel5710 because Katakuri couldn’t handle the stab like Luffy he didn’t get a hit for a long time. But we are not taking away Luffy’s durability its part of his strength.
no luffy won since remember they both could still go on and was in their fighting poses, katakuri after seeing the cheer determination of luffy gave up, its hard to phrase it exactly right, but lets say he could have continued you fighting and so could luffy, but to fight requires a will, and if that will is broken then they technically cant fight, katakuris will to fight lost to luffys meaning he had no other choice to give up since he no longer believed luffy could ever lose/not get back up again. Its also a factor of how he now respects luffy too for who he is and how he helped him

This, it's really glossed over the fact that they're made out of very different substances. People think they're the same just because they both stretch. Rubber is way more durable. Also Mochi is sticky and hard to remove from surfaces, once Luffy "knocked him down" it was hard for him to pull himself back up
@@ColdWeatherr That's not because he was made of mochi though. I agree with your main point, but when Katakuri fell down, he didn't get up because of (Insert literally the entire video here).

Man, this is one of the best analysis i've watched regarding this fight, and I agree with everything that was said. I really like katakuri and I've always wondered how luffy ever managed to defeat him before, but now I understand it. Amazing analysis, and a new sub right here 💕
Surprisingly not a rehash of the first luffy vs katakuri video you did years ago and definitely brings a few more layers of nuance to the first Video. This is my favorite fight of all time as it fully illustrates the obvious nuance of identity, reflection, and vision. You're literally watching a fight of identity crisis, being mirrored across another version of yourself, and emotional break-down across both combatants. I've watched this fight at least 20 times for insight on my own life and am truly grateful.

It frustrated me when the whole “Katakuri won but plot armour” because I always saw it as this. It felt like one of those times a Shonen series actually used real aspects of martial arts integrated into the series’ style and fans called it ‘unrealistic’. A big part of high level martial arts is training to stay mentally strong, thinking ahead in the fight and being physically conditioned to dishing out lots of hits and taking lots of hits, as apposed to being just skilled at techniques and physically strong. Katakuri wasn’t used to putting in his all and lost the drive required to push past it.
Also a minuscule part of him wanted luffy to win bc it would prove to himself that he could’ve gone the luffy route of openly showing weakness and being carefree and still be strong enough to beat someone of his level
2:48 not just that, but the scar on his chest, which he chooses to show proudly by never buttoning up his shirt, a scar that represents his biggest failure of not being able to protect his family

So highlighting this can clear things up and puts every one on the same page! *Very well done analysis! That was always the case, since the beginning. Luffy doesn't defeat his enemy just knocking them out, never kills them. He defeat their beliefs and dreams. He changes your mind to allow the enemy a second chance to be a better version of themself.
I think Katakuri didn't change, but just kinda reverted back to the kid who didn't care about what others thought of him, the person he really was and not the image he built up
I really love this fight myself it's both Katakuri's and Luffy's great turning points. I love when they both pull out conquerors Haki and knock out the peanut gallery.
This is like the best video on yt. Like I don't think there's ever going to be another character luffy faces off against that's anything like Katakuri, and the breakdown made the encounter look even more better than it acc was. This is why we subscribed to this channel, this is what we love to see.
11:00 That also could be because Luffy's Devil Fruit is a Mythical Zoan, So he indeed has better endurance physically than others, Wich also means that katakuri received more damage to his spear than did Luffy. But that's just a guess.
I thought this was gonna be a bad April fool's video but it was actually everything I wanted! A lot of people act as if luffy's victory here should be 100% attributed to katakuri's mental state while completely disregarding the fact that luffy got the shit kicked out of him for hours all because he wanted to overcome katakuri and improve his own observation haki
Luffy vs Katakuri in some ways reminds me of Gon vs the ninja guy in HxH. Like Gon was clearly outclassed but the man would not give up and the ninja guy didnt know what to do
Indicative SPOILERS for Chapter 1009: One thing I have remembered since the end of the Luffy vs Katakuri fight was the phrase "you're looking very far into the future", which was said by Katakuri responding to Luffy's declaration that he would come back to defeat Big Mom. To this day I consider this foreshadowing of the currently going fight in Wano and the latest events in Chapter 1009 support that even further.
@@bockskarr6626 My personal ideal conclusion would be that BM comes to peace with the giants of Elbaf, but for that she will have to get a lot of character development first. So obviously I hope that she comes out of the whole fight alive and the end of chapter 1009 is just a red herring.
THIS IS EXACTLY IT!!!! This fight was perfection. It was far more mental warfare, Katakuri reached an epiphany and realized how his delusions didn't match reality. He lost himself, so he lost the fight.
@@lulu4882 That's because not everything has to be important to the overall plot, and that's what I like about One Piece. Vivi was amazing, but after Alabasta, she never encounters Luffy again. He couldn't beat doffy in the time limit of G4 and had to get help from the colosseum dude. He also had help from law. And after doffy and luffy re engaged, they were mostly even. Hello!
Luffy vs Katakuri is a literal embodiment of the idiom "unstoppable force meets an immovable object". Luffy being the unstoppable force refusing to stay down and Katakuri the immovable object who refused to falter.
The whole thing stopping when Katakuri couldn't bother anymore to be completely immovable
It’s actually the opposite
I was gonna say wouldn’t it be vice versa?
I agree with everyone in every way
Katakuri still shoud've won tho
Perfect analysis for my favorite fight, also gave some new insight on how similar luffy and katakuri are
One of my favorite things that Luffy does in the fight is at the end, he puts his cover hat onto Katakuri's face, knowing he doesn't like others seeing it
penid
I think it's less that Luffy "Won" the fight as it was more-
Katakuri accepting a "Defeat"
Yeah, Luffy hit his limit a long time ago but was able to mentally lean on his friends for more strength. When Katakuri hit his limit, his mind went to a mother and a crew who mostly just shallowly saw him as an asset of strength. Therefore, when his mother was on the line, he simply couldn't find those unbreakable feelings that are required to get up selflessly like Luffy did countless times.
Bro thank you plus Luffy only had a chance when katakuri dmged himself which only happened cus his sister interferes and thought it was shameful

"Mochi gets pounded into shape while rubber bounces back to it's original shape" or something like that...
@@Interestking it was meant metaphorically, not that he literally didnt get up because of the Mochi lol. Oda has used Luffy being made of rubber to metaphorically describe his resilience all the time. This was a play upon that same metaphor
@@ColdWeatherr Agreed. No matter what you do to Luffy, he bounces right back, like the rubber he is. And Katakuri was "shaped" by his fight with Luffy, like the mochi he is. Literally pounded into being his ally.
Plot armour or something like that...
The real one who won are the people who pressed the subscribe button which gave them regular one piece content uploaded straight into their TH-cam feed
I love how a lot of fights now are learning about the antagonists more than Strawhats themselves, like when we get the backstory of Senor Pink and other great characters.
More than 3 years later and I love how people are still acknowledging the greatness that is Charlotte Katakuri !
As a boxer I appreciate the focus on mind breaking in this fight. It really is possible to win like that in a fight
I heard that from Mike Tyson
a lot of good fight in one piece also take place on a Mental level, like Crocodile or moria for exemple
Facts, Mike Tyson beat most of his opponents before he entered the ring because of the sheer terror he inflicted on them. Most of his opponents were afraid of him as seen when he fought Spinks and won the fight before it even started.
Oh yeah. All those boxing fights that a boxer go down multiple times and the other one untouched still "loses"
@@brunoherrera2574 there are some but I mean for example Tyson who never loses eyesight and the moment the enemy looks away he know he has his psyche. Also me even though I have better skills some people hit so hard you have respect for it and then you lose half of your strenght
this fight also stands as luffys first real step into the superhuman realm of one piece where youre essentially fighting in hi gear for more than just a couple of moments, the way the upper echelons have been known to fight for days and weeks
I liked the moment when Katakuri asks Brulee what happened to Luffy. That smile at 12:56 really shows a lot about Katakuri's character and how Luffy effects people.
The way oda always contrasts luffy with the antagonist is so genius
It's the modern Batman writing.
Every villain is a reflection of some aspect of his mentality.
Mr. Morj has a video about Luffy's contrast to his antagonists.
Yes. One of my favorite aspects of the series
Especially Blackbeard, the dichotomy between them is so intriguing
Plot twist: Katakuri losing to Luffy is all part of Truck Kun's plan

The amount of times luffy got up was unrealistic as he got hit by a dumb amount of times by a dude who saw the future and had stronger armour haki
@@jorgeandrestaverareyes7381 until you realize what else he was tanking way before Katakuri
@@jorgeandrestaverareyes7381 have u read the manga because it makes sense now considering his df
Yall gotta stop crying abt katakuri loosing He was better in everything but durability wich is why he lost
2:48 not just that, but the scar on his chest, which he chooses to show proudly by never buttoning up his shirt, a scar that represents his biggest failure of not being able to protect his family
Katakuri became one of my absolute favorite antagonists. The fight was definitely one of the best. This fight and the fight against rob luchi were two of my favorites. I love the story telling during the fights.
Um, Katakuri was so damn surprised how different type of leaders Luffy and his own captain were.
BM is a emperor of the sea not captain of BM Pirates.
@@bockskarr6626 queen of totoland. Yeh I get what you are implying. But the idea still stands. He was admiring luffy as a leader too through a major part of the fight.
"So that's what they call a captain's will" after Luffy smashed the mirror. That''s when he started thinking different about who Luffy is.

One Piece is not a straight forward story, some fans usually forget that factor. It's messy, it's misunderstood and it's unique. That's why we all like it, you just don't know it yet.
Kinda like AoT there's SOOOOOO MANY loose head canons uploading to the toobz
What do u mean by messy and misunderstood cuz it feels like a normal shonen to me so please elaborate
@@donzzeee2317 One Piece is anything but a "normal" shounen. Its world building and masterful long-term storytelling alone make it stand out among the mass of shounen out there.
@@donzzeee2317 Eh, you do know that mystery is 100% a part of the story and pretty much all of the community are theorists or enjoy theories in general right?
Alrighty, i'll try to explain to the best of my abilities, okay i feel like people forget that the one piece world, IS a huge world (and feels like more of a "world"), what i mean by that is that everything is connected, every character has their place in the world no matter how small or how big and they push the story forward and some important and even some not so important characters are messy or a blur because we don't know much about them even though they connect to bigger storylines and other characters, which can connect back to what we already know which can connect to future events which connects back to the present
tinny
@@kraiaikrai8962 good point, but what you have just explained reminds me of bleach
Wow... amazing video, I never looked at the fight this way. Really eye opening and gives you such an appreciation for the story and Oda's writing abilities... who else could tell a story so interesting and profound and have it go over so many readers heads simply because they only every look at things one way

I like how brulee was genuinely adorable as a child and as an adult she looks like a witch WHAT HAPPENED

Dear god, I forgot why this was my favorite conflict out of all of One Piece. Thank you for reminding me just why I loved it the first time.
I absolutely loved the way you broke the fight down, and the perspectives you added for Katakuri
*Thanks for making this video!!*
Not only is the message of this fight amazing and super important for our current generation, but also its very underrated.
I'm sure even big fans may have missed the main message when reading week to week, whilst the arc itself is quite chaotic.
So highlighting this can clear things up and puts every one on the same page!
*Very well done analysis! I know they don't bring in the MOST views, but the hardcore Grandfleet Members appreciate this ^_^*
That was always the case, since the beginning.
Luffy doesn't defeat his enemy just knocking them out, never kills them.
He defeat their beliefs and dreams. He changes your mind to allow the enemy a second chance to be a better version of themself.
Definitely inspired by Goku. Turning all his enemies into allies.
Very well put together, really made me think. I had not put that much through and detail into how I perceived this fight!
The jokes on you cause GLR just out here spitting straight facts.
Okay, I know this meme is old but,
Imagine Nami Coming out of the mirror just before Luffy breaks it xD

@@JadKaradin that's y *it's joke*
As long as this fight is talked about that meme will be funny
He really pinned down Katakuri in this fight!
Well I believe yesterday was Apri 1st in aussie
I was expecting an april fool, but it was a very good video
i think that after wano there is a revolutionary army arc as something has happened to sabo and i hope in this arc we can discover more about dragon
Yeah everyone one wants to know what happened at reverie
And hopefully zorros backstory and more about down d. stairs
BRING ON ELBAF ✊🏻
Katakuri is like wamuu, an enemy but a very respectable one.
This is by far one of the best vids Liam has ever done. Awesome
Luffy vs Katakuri in some ways reminds me of Gon vs the ninja guy in HxH. Like Gon was clearly outclassed but the man would not give up and the ninja guy didnt know what to do
His name is Hanzo
Indicative SPOILERS for Chapter 1009: One thing I have remembered since the end of the Luffy vs Katakuri fight was the phrase "you're looking very far into the future", which was said by Katakuri responding to Luffy's declaration that he would come back to defeat Big Mom. To this day I consider this foreshadowing of the currently going fight in Wano and the latest events in Chapter 1009 support that even further.
I think BM and ELBAF will be tied up a lil perhaps in the beginning 🤷🏼♂️ being that BM has ties to ELBAF
@@bockskarr6626 My personal ideal conclusion would be that BM comes to peace with the giants of Elbaf, but for that she will have to get a lot of character development first. So obviously I hope that she comes out of the whole fight alive and the end of chapter 1009 is just a red herring.
Chapter 1010
THIS IS EXACTLY IT!!!! This fight was perfection. It was far more mental warfare, Katakuri reached an epiphany and realized how his delusions didn't match reality. He lost himself, so he lost the fight.
One hing i was going to say before i clicked this video:
plot armor. Yes, thats it. Plot armor
I want to see Katakuri and Luffy eating donuts and meeting again at some point.
That'd be wholesome
Hahahahaha thats perfect I
wanna see them eating donuts 😂😂😂😂😂
Well its true, Anybody plays One Piece games on roblox??
I want to see a interaction between him and King
I feel since oda put so much into katakuri that something in the future of one piece will include katakuri again
i hope so, sometimes characters who are well developed in their arc just fade into the background though.
@@lulu4882 That's because not everything has to be important to the overall plot, and that's what I like about One Piece. Vivi was amazing, but after Alabasta, she never encounters Luffy again. This is because although she is an amazing character and it would be awesome for her to see Luffy after all this time, it wouldn't make sense from a narrative standpoint.
@@Interestking it's true that that'll happen but vivi is about to gain importance again with what happened during the reverie arc. oda will often have characters go into hibernation for years and bring them back in an organic way that makes sense with the progression of the plot.
Spoiler alert!!!!!
In wano kunai big mom returns so there's a huge change katakuri also comes to assist Luffy
I just want to say, if Luffy hadn't exposed Katakuri's "kirk" like that in front of the 3 chefs, then Katakuri wouldn't of had to kill them.
More videos on this fight are always welcome!
Ur explanation makes so much more sense then the rest ive seen and it totally changed my mind about this fight ure awesome dude

Ngl bro...luffy was getting Folded like my laundry in this fight
You got me with luffy smashing the button. 10/10
I like the idea that Katakuri used his future sight and saw after killing luffy gear 5 would come out
To be honest Luffy defeating Katakuri seems more natural to me than when he defeated Doflamingo.
You're going off the manga or the anime?
In the manga Gear 4 just straight up throws Luffy way above Mingo's league, and while in the downtime he couldn't use Haki he could still run on his own(not just implied but also confirmed by Oda on SBS)
@@justbny9278 I hate when in the anime they change stuff like that. Luffy bodied mingo and the last attack was like punching air for Luffy. Same with Zoro and a certain nova in Wano.
@@justbny9278 I read the manga while it was on-going, but I think his downfall was too sudden and feels out of place to me when it did. Katakuri fight, on the other hand, had good amount of buildups and developments until their final clash.
@@justbny9278 Luffy also had the help of Law. He was able to hit Doflamingo with his Red Hawk and Law hit him with his Gamma Knife.
Dofi has certainly hax abilities and I think in a 1 on 1 Luffy has a very bad time. Not saying he couldn't win but he wouldn't beat Dofi with on G4.
He couldn't beat doffy in the time limit of G4 and had to get help from the colosseum dude. He also had help from law. And after doffy and luffy re engaged, they were mostly even. And that's in the manga. It was a hard W thats all.
Keep in mind while fighting luffy and law, doffy was maintaining an island level ability that haki users couldn't even cut through, made multiple clones of himself and also had to repair his organs. If it was luffy vs doffy 1v1 I can't say luffy wins
This fight has always been my favorite fight in the series. It's perfection
because Luffy outlasted him and Katakuri lost to Luffy's sense of freedom and "not giving a damn" energy

Regardless of the outcome... I have never seen Luffy's ass beat so much even when trying to save Ace... He got the ass whooping to last several lifetimes. He got them Mochi Mochi hands...
I love katakuri he looks cute when he eating donuts looks so happy :)
