With his direct son being the leader of the revolutionary army, his grandson being an infamous pirate (and possible pirate king), his adopted grandson (ace) being a 2nd division commander for white beard, and partially Sabo (indirectly) being 2nd in command of the revolutionary army.

Defeating Don Chinjoa didn't seem like a great accomplishment and the community assumed the hero part of his title was based on him "capturing" Roger only later did we learn it was from him teaming up with the Roger crew to defeat the ludicrously powerful Rocks crew protecting a celestial dragon. This alone completely changed our understanding of someone who we thought we knew for years in a single chapter.
People forget that during the entire paramount war he only took one hit and it was willingly allowed. He knocked Marco out of the sky like it was nothing and effortlessly knocked out Burgess.

I'll never understand those popularity rankings. He is such a great guy and one we know a lot about as well. During the Marine Fort arch he has really shown us his character. Loyal with a strong sence of justice but also a loving grandfather which makes it so cruel that he had to watch his grandson die in the arms of his other grandson. Truly tragic.
we are talking about the japanese fanbase here. they rank characters higher based on cuteness and not how "powerful" they are or character development. exceptions are the main characters of course, but apart from that there are some pretty weird choices up there.

Imagine Garp being apart of Roger's Crew. Not for a short time like during the fight against the Rocks Pirates, but a full on fellow pirate. That's a scary crew.
Ironically as Shiki once said it, the weakest sea gave birth to too many 'strongest' and 'best' people that gave and give troubles to the world. Whether it's Garp, Roger, or Dragon. The Hero, the Pirate King, and The Revolutionary Leader, all three men that created such ripples to the world were all from the supposed weakest of Blues. It's as if East Blue kept all the strength and awesomeness and then release it on the chosen person.

I have this theory in the works. Garp and Roger were childhood friends that grew up together. That is until one pursued the life of a pirate and the other joined the Marines. The two were inseparable. Up until Garp climbed up the ranks and Roger started becoming notorious. I say this bc Roger trusted Garp enough to look after his wife and child in the event of his death. Only a best friend would behave that way. Wouldn't even shock me if Roger named Garp as Aces godfather. Then there's the team up to fight the Rocks Pirates. Roger never saw Garp as an enemy or even a rival despite the fact that Garp clearly saw Roger not as a rival but an enemy. Roger considered Garp a brother as both family and a brother in arms.
Truly he value and trust garp the same respect to his nakama or comrades. one of the reason explain why Dragon knows a lot, I have theory too that Garp want dragon to be marine too and dragon follow it yet found the truth and carry the will of both roger and garp but instead of being a pirate he kinda goes to the middle not a pirate not a marine but revolutionary because if you'll see roger and garp didn't accomplish what they supposed to do to change the world cause its impossible in their era. Roger being in era where ancient weapon is not yet complete or alive and garp being in ranked but doesn't make a change because even how higher your position you'll still lead under celestial dragon wants, no wonder why he didn't accept any promotion to become fleet admiral or admiral cause for him its hopeless to got higher rank when you just still doesn't change anything. Garp actually is confirmed to have Conqueror's haki. The official translation from Viz says "He *also* inherited conquerors haki" (referring to Luffy). The word "also" is very important there because it means that Luffy's father had "also" inherited conqueror's haki, and if this is the case then it would have to be from Garp, or I guess whoever Dragon's mom was, but that seems unlikely.

Those words have very specific meanings, and if we are to trust the viz translation, there's only one way to interpret it. If they had not intended this implication, they would not have included the word "also." It serves no othet purpose in this sentence.

XD thanks for the in depth lesson on "implication" btw it can also be similar to the whole inherited will thing since Haki is an extension(might be the wrong word) of a persons willpower in one piece. (especially when translations of Japanese can leave out quite a bit of necessary nuance)

For Strongest Characters Known in One Piece All Time History 1. Rocks D Xebec 2. Garp/Roger 3. Whitebeard 4. Rayleigh 5. Sengoku Edit: This is when all of them were at their prime.
Even saitama cannot defeat akainu because he is logia type and saitama ain't got armament haki.... But this man can ...probably the only one who can defeat akainu among marines
He could probably beat him with mid-high difficulty at the current time... If it was Prime Garp tho, that would be another story. Garp would still beat him, but basically in an instant. Dont forget about Sengoku, he's pretty strong too
Imu's place is in gods valley where she met garp & gave birth to dragon. That's why garp defended gods valley and allied with roger even though he hates pirates and CD's. That's why garp gets a pass even though he raised PK's son, ace and is father to the most wanted man, dragon, and then luffy, without suffering any consequence (imu's protection). Roger protected dragon from rocks hence garp had to return the favor by protecting ace from the marines, or maybe dragon was raised by roger through someone like dadan, dragon was at Roger's execution & learns the truth, its why dragon has a clash of ideas with his mum creating the RA. Rocks was an escaped slave, that's how he knew who really runs the world and god valley location. To take the throne (& probably revenge), he needed the strongest crew which he played on their desires which is why they joined him (no loyalty), captain john & shiki wanted riches while BM wanted DFs, etc (BM & WB will never join a crew just bcuz the captain defeated them, NEVER, its like kid joining straw hats bcuz luffy beat him or is stronger than him). Once in gods valley, all went their way in search of what they wanted, its why rocks was left to battle roger and garp alone. BM got her hands on the DF, kept the food DF e.g biscuit, mochi, candy, etc & gave kaido his DF cuz it's not what she wants (or perhaps after rocks was defeated and reenforcement arrived, they were in a tight spot and needed a bait/someone to keep them occupied while BM makes her escape, and so gave kaido this strong DF, I guess he was defeated and caught by the marines, the 1st of many captures). After the whole affair, imu and god valley was relocated to mariejoe. So if rocks is still alive, he's probably chained in mariejoe or somewhere, waiting for Blackbeard to come get him, which is where shanks fits into the puzzle as he goes to stop Blackbeard, but its too late and dies after taking on rocks and Blackbeard, BAM, now luffy has a beef with rocks, and we're all satisfied that shanks wasn't killed by a weak BB, and to also showcase rocks strength. (Less probable but maybe shanks has the strongest defensive DF which Blackbeard will then obtain to complete the 3 DFs and to also measure up to the yonko standard, call this a quick power up, cuz even with his 2 DF, I honestly can't see BB taking on kaido or BM now and coming out on top)
I just love how oda handled garp. I remember a decade ago when he actually fought against the wb pirates, preventing them from rescuing ace. I was so mad at the time because i couldnt fathom how anyone would make the decision he made. With how oda portrayed him later, however, i can finally see what he must have gone through. He is very aware of his public perception and status and also of the unstable organisation that is the marines (many differing approaches to justice) adn with the most recent reveals everything finally comes together and makes sense...
I have had a theory on Garp for a while. So hear me out. He has been asked to be an Admiral on several occasions. And one thing we have known about every Admiral is that they are all powerful Devil Fruit users. So hear me out. I believe he was offered the role along with a powerful Devil Fruit and he said at the time he'll think about it and took the fruit. But he didnt end up eating it instead he gave it to his son Dragon. And this is why he is seen being yelled at because he gave away one of the most powerful Devil Fruits to his son. And my theory is that the Navy gave him the wind wind Logia type fruit and that is why they are salty with him. Again this is only a theory but one I feel is somewhat right maybe not on the exact Devil Fruit but this is my theory and opinion.

remember that Garp can throw 10,000 cannon ball (that's like 10x buster call) with his bare hands. it was said that no ship survived his attack except for roger whom he cornered multiple times. a living legend who equals the pirate king in strength. he could perhaps take on the gorosei 1v5 because those elders did not give a shit on him being the father of the most wanted criminal in OP.
I think a lot of people dislike Garp because it's really difficult to reconcile his principles with his actions. It takes a lot of mental gymnastics to justify his actions at Ace's execution. Rule of funny lets us gloss over some aspects of his abusive parenting style, but any way you look at it, he chooses his career over his family at the extreme detriment of his loved ones. You can have bad traits and be likeable character, but for Garp it doesn't quite stick because he also rarely confronts these faults. Which can be frustrating for the reader.

I think god valley Dissapearing from the map was because of garp, that's why songoku not allowed garp to join fights in marine's base at any cost. It seems to me garp might very well end up in wano even if the rest of the marines decide not to. For starters as the person who brought down the rox in the first place he is the most likely to face this renewed version of the big mom and kaido alliance.. He also knows his grandson is their and his protege coby is in contact with fellow sword member x drake
So since Garp and Dragon both hate the world nobles, I'm guessing they both have some major family history on that, since their wives haven't been introduced yet, maybe Garp lost his wife to the nobles, then maybe the same thing happened later on to Dragon.

I have this theory in the works.
Garp and Roger were childhood friends that grew up together. That is until one pursued the life of a pirate and the other joined the Marines. The two were inseparable. Up until Garp climbed up the ranks and Roger started becoming notorious.
I say this bc Roger trusted Garp enough to look after his wife and child in the event of his death. Only a best friend would behave that way. Wouldn't even shock me if Roger named Garp as Aces godfather. Then there's the team up to fight the Rocks Pirates.
Roger never saw Garp as an enemy or even a rival despite the fact that Garp clearly saw Roger not as a rival but an enemy. Roger considered Garp a brother as both family and a brother in arms.
Truly he value and trust garp the same respect to his nakama or comrades. one of the reason explain why Dragon knows a lot, I have theory too that Garp want dragon to be marine too and dragon follow it yet found the truth and carry the will of both roger and garp but instead of being a pirate he kinda goes to the middle not a pirate not a marine but revolutionary because if you'll see roger and garp didn't accomplish what they supposed to do to change the world cause its impossible in their era. Roger being in era where ancient weapon is not yet complete or alive and garp being in ranked but doesn't make a change because even how higher your position you'll still lead under celestial dragon wants, no wonder why he didn't accept any promotion to become fleet admiral or admiral cause for him its hopeless to got higher rank when you just still doesn't change anything. So Dragon choose the path where he carries both will roger and garp.
Garp didn't really see Roger as an enemy, he sees that because of Marine Profesional, the same thing as what he said to Luffy on Marineford "You are my enemies" even tho he let Luffy in the end, and there is no stating that Garp sees Roger as rival, mainly the Rival context is not from himself but third person perspective (Correct me if i'm wrong)

Garp actually is confirmed to have Conqueror's haki. The official translation from Viz says "He *also* inherited conquerors haki" (referring to Luffy). The word "also" is very important there because it means that Luffy's father had "also" inherited conqueror's haki, and if this is the case then it would have to be from Garp, or I guess whoever Dragon's mom was, but that seems unlikely.

But it also just makes sense thematically, Dragon is the leader of the revolutionaries and most wanted man in the world, so of course he would have it. And garp is the hero of the marines, and to this day potentially a top 5 character in terms of strength. I'm not sure if you're caught up in the manga, but let's just say that Garp is CRAZY strong

its criminal that garps ranks that low in popularity, a loving fist is needed to solve this problem.
Imu's place is in gods valley where she met garp & gave birth to dragon. That's why garp defended gods valley and allied with roger even though he hates pirates and CD's. That's why garp gets a pass even though he raised PK's son, ace and is father to the most wanted man, dragon, and then luffy, without suffering any consequence (imu's protection). Roger protected dragon from rocks hence garp had to return the favor by protecting ace from the marines, or maybe dragon was raised by roger through someone like dadan, dragon was at Roger's execution & learns the truth, its why dragon has a clash of ideas with his mum creating the RA. Rocks was an escaped slave, that's how he knew who really runs the world and god valley location. To take the throne (& probably revenge), he needed the strongest crew which he played on their desires which is why they joined him (no loyalty), captain john & shiki wanted riches while BM wanted DFs, etc (BM & WB will never join a crew just bcuz the captain defeated them, NEVER, its like kid joining straw hats bcuz luffy beat him or is stronger than him). Once in gods valley, all went their way in search of what they wanted, its why rocks was left to battle roger and garp alone. BM got her hands on the DF, kept the food DF e.g biscuit, mochi, candy, etc & gave kaido his DF cuz it's not what she wants (or perhaps after rocks was defeated and reenforcement arrived, they were in a tight spot and needed a bait/someone to keep them occupied while BM makes her escape, and so gave kaido this strong DF, I guess he was defeated and caught by the marines, the 1st of many captures). After the whole affair, imu and god valley was relocated to mariejoe. So if rocks is still alive, he's probably chained in mariejoe or somewhere, waiting for Blackbeard to come get him, which is where shanks fits into the puzzle as he goes to stop Blackbeard, but its too late and dies after taking on rocks and Blackbeard, BAM, now luffy has a beef with rocks, and we're all satisfied that shanks wasn't killed by a weak BB, and to also showcase rocks strength. (Less probable but maybe shanks has the strongest defensive DF which Blackbeard will then obtain to complete the 3 DFs and to also measure up to the yonko standard, call this a quick power up, cuz even with his 2 DF, I honestly can't see BB taking on kaido or BM now and coming out on top)

I just love how oda handled garp. I remember a decade ago when he actually fought against the wb pirates, preventing them from rescuing ace. I was so mad at the time because i couldnt fathom how anyone would make the decision he made. With how oda portrayed him later, however, i can finally see what he must have gone through. He is very aware of his public perception and status and also of the unstable organisation that is the marines (many differing approaches to justice) adn with the most recent reveals everything finally comes together and makes sense...

I have had a theory on Garp for a while. So hear me out.
He has been asked to be an Admiral on several occasions. And one thing we have known about every Admiral is that they are all powerful Devil Fruit users.
So hear me out. I believe he was offered the role along with a powerful Devil Fruit and he said at the time he'll think about it and took the fruit. But he didnt end up eating it instead he gave it to his son Dragon. And this is why he is seen being yelled at because he gave away one of the most powerful Devil Fruits to his son. And my theory is that the Navy gave him the wind wind Logia type fruit and that is why they are salty with him.
Again this is only a theory but one I feel is somewhat right maybe not on the exact Devil Fruit but this is my theory and opinion.

I think a lot of people dislike Garp because it's really difficult to reconcile his principles with his actions. It takes a lot of mental gymnastics to justify his actions at Ace's execution. Rule of funny lets us gloss over some aspects of his abusive parenting style, but any way you look at it, he chooses his career over his family at the extreme detriment of his loved ones.
You can have bad traits and be likeable character, but for Garp it doesn't quite stick because he also rarely confronts these faults. Which can be frustrating for the reader.

So since Garp and Dragon both hate the world nobles, I'm guessing they both have some major family history on that, since their wives haven't been introduced yet, maybe Garp lost his wife to the nobles, then maybe the same thing happened later on to Dragon.
