    Each time I saw Moana it just always seemed so weird to me that Te Fiti, the very pure goddess who created the sprawling life across the world, would be able to change her outlook on that life and become the demon Te Ka over a tiny rock heart. I know it’s powerful and important but why would one big headed thief like Maui warrant a darkness that would continue to spread until everyone of us is devoured by the bloodthirsty jaws of inescapable death. I just had to know: why did Te Fiti become Te Ka?
    I post every Tuesday and Thursday, so check back then for more Disney, Pixar, Harry Potter, Star Wars and movie videos! If you have any questions about the Disney universe that you would want answered in a video, please ask away in the comment section!

      I always thought Te Ka and Te Fiti were to sides of the same coin. One brought creation and the other brought destruction. I thought Te Fiti was the most dominant because of the heart since it held her compassion and desire to create. However, once it was removed the desire to create was overrun by the desire to destroy awakening her counter part (the other side of the coin) Te Ka.

    Yes, I believe that Te Ka was created from Te Fiti rejecting her purpose, however, I don't think it was because she felt betrayed by her own creation of LIFE, but rather her creation of Maui himself. In the movie, Maui tells his story of how he became a demi-god, getting thrown into the ocean and the gods saving him and giving him his hook. Well, I think that Te Fiti was the one who did both of those things. The reason for this is that close to the end of the movie, we see Te Fiti give Maui a brand new hook after the first is destroyed, and seeing as how no other Hawaiian god is referenced in the movie, it was Te Fiti who gave him the first hook after saving him and making him a demi-god. However, this would bring up the question of "If Te Fiti was the one who saved Maui, then why would he try to steal her heart?" Well, I believe that he grew overconfident. In the song "You're Welcome", Maui gives a list of all his accomplishments since he became a demi-god. I think that as he gained more accomplishments helping mankind, he also grew overconfident, thinking that no matter what he did, he could get away with it if his motive was to help mankind. So, he let his overconfidence get the best of him, and tried to steal Te Fiti's heart to solidify his legacy of helping mankind. Feeling betrayed about what Maui did after literally saving his life and turning him into the demi-god that was so loved, that's what I believe turned her into Te Ka. But who knows for sure?

    The Fiti turning into Te Ka can very accurately represent a woman who has suffered trauma. Maui’s violence and theft of a sacred piece of her traumatized her, and she became a violent, angry monster herself, spreading death throughout the world. Maui thinks he is restoring Te Fiti’s heart when he is battling Te Ka, but all he is doing is causing her more pain, because he doesn’t see who she truly is. She is not able to heal until someone stops fighting her and shows her compassion and accepts her and loves her, lava monster and all. That was Moana’s purpose in Te Fiti’s story. Just like traumatized people cannot heal without compassion and support, and meeting them with more violence only makes things worse for them.

    maui's hook and te fiti's heart are very similar in the symbolism to them. they both don't need the object to be themselves, but they kind of lose it when they don't have the object that makes them who they are in their minds.

  • @hippiechik95

    Te Fiti and Maui aren’t so different. Remember how Maui said, “Without my hook, I am nothing”? If Te Fiti considered her heart and life-giving powers to be everything that defined her, she may well have thought that she was nothing without it. Maybe it wasn’t just the heartbreak and anger at Maui’s thievery, but also the insecurity at having lost the thing she felt defined her, that caused her drastic change. After all, look at how Maui reacts when Te Ka damages his hook. He lashes out and runs away in anger. Te Fiti probably felt much the same.

    I believe that Te Fiti and Te Ka are like the concept of Yin and Yang. Each side representing one aspect of a whole but contain a piece of the other. This explains why Te Ka could be reasoned with by Moana, but as Te Fiti is shown to be initially displeased with Maui before he apologised for his actions. Together the two are a Goddess of Creation, they just represent different sides of this. Maui was someone that the Gods had taken in and had been gifted with becoming a demigod. It never explained who raised him in the movie but it is a fair assumption that Maui built relationships with many of the Gods, including Te Fiti. So when he stole Te Fiti’s small stone heart which had become a powerful symbol of her role which was essentially Mother Nature, he in turn broke her real heart. She allowed her arguably more destructive side Te Ka out in an attempt to punish Maui for this betrayal. Te Ka remained as the dominant side for many years fuelled by Te Fiti’s anger, until Moana was able to calm Te Ka down and asked her to remember what her true role was. Te Ka has the ability to create new islands this is true, but over the years her influence was slowly killing the life giving vegetation on islands that Te Fiti had created so long ago. This was why the Ocean searched for the one who could both return the heart and calm the Goddess, but also get Maui to admit his hubris and apologise. So when Te Fiti’s stone heart was restored the balance of creation returned to the way it should be and with Maui’s apology Te Fiti’s true heart could finally mend too.

    I always thought, that Te Ka was just angry Te Fiti, and she was destroying lands to find the heart, not for the destruction it's self. She was furious and wasn't controlling her self very well, and how we could see, angry goddess is natural disaster.
    Moana pretty much told Te Fiti to snap out of it and look around to see what her anger turned her into and what exactly she was doing. Because The Fiti wasn't bad at heart, she calmed down and the rest is history.

    i fell like Te Fiti and Te Ka took inspiration from fantasia 2000 The Firebird Suite. Te Fiti take inspiration from the Spring Sprite and Te Ka takes inspiration from The Firebird.

    • @anonymousfellow8879
      @anonymousfellow8879 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Robomerc
      The animation of the Firebird Suite is a description of Mt St Helen’s eruption. The mountain (firebird) is only shown as destructive with Nature (the sprite) being shown as a completely separate entity. Don’t get me wrong, it’s my favorite Fantasia short. But it’s very Western in thought.
      Te Ka and Te Fiti are instead based on Pele, as Isaac already mentioned. Volcanoes grow with each eruption and volcanic soil is some of the most fertile, but the lava’s the least of your problems when a volcano errupts (ash, toxic gas, etc)
      There’s also how the Earth’s molten core (and seismic activity like earthquakes and volcanoes) is literally a sign of good planetary health, as it maintains things like gravity and the magnetic field. Lose that and we’d get hit by a lot more space radiation and lose our atmosphere and liquid water. But too much and the planet is basically too chaotic for anything to survive...if not outright a giant fire planet (think Io) and at risk of blowing or ripping apart.
      And this understanding is reflected with Pele (who inspired Te Fiti and Te Ka especially) as...living with turbulent volcanic islands kinda shaped polynesian cultures

      Shame, regret and the need to truly be the hero of man kind again. Besides, he spend time with that girl taking his spotlight and warmed up to her, a mere human. And here is Maui, a demi god not only seeing some one lesser then him being a greater hero than him that just so happened to probably be his closest friend? Maui couldn't possibly stand idly by any longer. That is why I like Moana, she is an insignificant human who despite he simply fragility, takes matter into her own hands knowing the slightest mistake can end her life. She has guts.

  • @CeltycSparrow

    I think the reason why Moana and Te Fiti look nearly identical is because the Goddess Te Fiti is a reflection of Moana, herself. When Te Fiti lost her heart, she transformed into a volcano goddess, Te Ka. She had literally lost her identity when Maui stole her heart - the thing that was most precious to her - and her anger and pain were reflected in the fiery goddess, Te Ka. It is only after Moana learns the truth and restores the heart of the Mother Goddess that she is able to transform back into her true form and find peace. Moana, as well, is also searching for her true identity. She is torn between two paths....the one that her father wants for her, which is to take her place as the next leader of her people and place her stone on the mountain.....and the one that yearns to heed the call of the sea....to explore the vast ocean as her ancestors did before her. It is only when Moana is visited by Grandma Tala in her spirit form that she realizes who she truly is.....and she is able to finish her quest to heal the sea and save her people.

    I think the fact that it was Maoi (I know I probably butchered that spelling) Plays a big part in why she was so hurt. Remember, it was the gods that saved, and most likely raised, Maoi. Te Fiti probably viewed him as family. So when it was this "Child" she had helped raised that stole her heart, she probably felt betrayed and hurt.

  • @anonymousfellow8879
    @anonymousfellow8879 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Maui literally stole a significant piece of her soul, and did so because of the demands of humanity.
    Volcanic soil is some of the most fertile, but it’s also created by, you know, volcanoes. Which also spew toxic gasses and ash that poison water and soil.
    Basically, Maui set off a chain of volcanic erruptions.
    When Moana touches Te Ka, she cools enough that Moana is not burned...but she doesn’t actually revert back into Te Fiti until her soul is returned to her...in which case she goes back to sleep.
    In other words, Moana returning the Heart put an end to the erruptions and allowed the volcanoes to become dormant again. So, no. I don’t think Te Ka really had much control, and she’s not at fault for Humanity&Maui so intimately harming her
    This would also explain the sudden lack of fish and rough seas-volcanic activity has been known to cause tsunamis and other severe weather, and it could also superheat the ocean currents.
    Volcanoes are dangerous, but they also form islands. It’s literally a duality.

    being from Hawaiʻi, Te Ka and Te Fiti made a lot of sense to me because of where I grew up and the stories I was told. I figured because Te Ka was similar to Pele and Te Fiti was similar to either/both Papahānaumoku (earth mother) and Hiʻiakaikapoliopele (Peleʻs younger sister). Because Pele was the creator of new land, her fire and lava would scorch everything and the land would look seemingly barren and scarred, in need of healing, so Hiʻiaka was believed to be that healing, having been associated with the fresh plants that grow from the volcanic stone. from the cracks in the lava, ʻOhiʻa Lehua trees and ferns would sprout from the fertile volcanic soil and stone. this was often believed to be Hiʻiaka. the reason I say that Te Fiti is similar to Papa is because she is the earth, her name literally translating to "surface/firmament that births land"

    Your enthusiasm for Disney magic is always a joy for a nineties kid like me to witness. Thank you for all these years of hard work!

    That makes a lot of sense, in the beginning of Moana's adventure, it was extremely important that Maui needed to be the one that returned the heart. Maybe so it could restore the trust/love she lost along with her heart?

    I do believe that Te Fiti transforms into Te Ka because she rejects her purpose after Maui steals her heart. But, there’s something I don’t understand about the film. When Maui attempts to escape Te Ka, his magical fish hook sinks into the depths of the sea. How does Tamatoa obtain his hook?

    It's a way to illustrate that pain, in this case the pain of loss and betrayal, can change us all.
    In the End Moana reminds her that she is so much more than that pain. And that it is up to Te Fiti to decide Who She is.

  • @jf2801
    @jf2801 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wouldn't say she rejected who she was, so much as she revealed the side of her most often subdued by her compassionate nature. Te Ka is what psychology and those who use magick (like some witches) would call Te Fiti's "shadow." It's still her, but a darker aspect of her overall personality, and like many mythologies, such as Greek, we often think of the Earth/Nature Goddess as being solely the goddess of life, of new growth and such, but as true Earth/Nature Goddesses, they embody earth and nature, completely. And nature isn't always nice and pleasant. Earth isn't just sunshine and rainbows and deers munching on the fresh leaves she brings, it is also the thunder and lightning, very very frightening me sorta stuff. Like literally, lightning, hail, thunder, droughts, earthquakes, harsh winters, dying plants in fall. It is something to be adored, but also feared and respected.

    I'm not entirely sure what to think of Te Fiti and Te Ka. As a Primordial deity, she is a force of nature as well as an intelligent, sentient being. So I guess what I've wondered is, how much of her is nature and nurture?
    As a force of nature, we see what is seemingly the opposite of creation and life in Te Fiti, which is destruction and death in Te Ka. But the part about lava and volcanoes being a source of creation as well, that is a very good point, like the story of Pele.
    As a sentient being, aka nurture, she indeed has strong emotions, which are reflected in her overall nature, as in her emotional nature and her nature as a goddess. I think it's also a good point that she felt betrayed by one of her own creations, and did turn her back on her purpose because she didn't want to be hurt again. Having such a precious part of one's identity can really transform a person, for better or worse, and in Te Fiti's case, it was literally transforming into something worse.
    It's kind of a perfect blend/balance of nature and nurture, not only showing the fiercest of nature, but also a very relatable story of what happens to someone who is really hurt, and in that person's hurt, can lose sight of who one is, and what one's purpose is.

    I think te ka is te fiti’s original form which created land but the rest of the deities thought that te ka could destroy everything so they created a stone (te fiti’s heart) to to tame it (te ka) and turn it into te fiti’s to crate life and when Maui removed the heart it made te ka untamed and unleashed her from inside te fiti

    Volcanism is one of the most important elements of life. Mars shows us what happens when plate tectonics stop. I believe Te Fiti is the dormant form of Te Ka, and Te Ka can re-emerge at any time. I believe that Te Ka is the actual creation goddess, while her aspect of Te Fiti simply adds life to the land Te Ka created.

    My theory is that the reason to feiti turned into ta ka is that when a part of you is taken and violated like her heart being stolen you grieve and long to have that piece of yourself back and it turns into a downward spiral that you can’t get out of on your own and then In comes moana who starts to understand ta ka and she reminds her that that piece she is missing dose not define her but how she chooses to deal with that trauma and that’s when ta feiti’ soul comes through more clearly in my opinion

    I just noticed that Tala states that 'boats stopped coming back' in the opening of the movie, but later claims that Moana never heard stories about when they were voyagers. Is it a plot hole, a mistake in the script that no one noticed or a clue to everyone that they used to be voyagers.
