      More's the shame that Land Rover, after building vehicles for so many years can't build something that doesn't leak oil. But leak, that's what they do it's compulsory.

    I owned a D2. I was delighted at how comfortable and versatile it was. I always wished for a D3. After seeing you need a full workshop including hoist, custom manufactured tools, and seemingly limitless time to maintain these later models, maybe I better avoid.
    When I worked for the Royal Flying Doctor Service out in Central Australia I replaced the D2 with a Defender with the BMW designed TD5 because of the harsh conditions (no roads, severe dust). Despite all the local Toyota pundits braying like donkeys about my Defender it performed flawlessly and only needed oil/filter changes. I did however have to spend much time underneath initially filling all the holes in the body with silicon sealant. The body construction is very crude but very practical.
    If you actually need a 4WD the Defender has many attention to detail which make it a workhorse eg. metal guards over exposed fuel filter which D2 does not etc.
    I enjoy the good humored camaraderie between you two. Amazed at your patience. Thank you & greetings from Brisbane Australia 👍🏻 🦘

    Excellent video as usual. Of course LR4 is my favourite topic along with LR Time.
    I found it easier to remove the exhaust and DPF complete rather than to try and disassembly those 3 rusty bolts on the rear DPF flange. Of course had to grind them off! Once the DPF is ready off, great idea to check the actual soot covering to see that your regen is really happening. Looking forward to the sequel today.

    Some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you!🙂
    I greatly admire your skills here and that you have the humility to admit when you get stuff wrong. As someone not very mechanically inclined when young (or now), and motivated then by a low income not to get stuff done by garages, I had little choice but to do the simpler stuff myself. So many of my repairs on the wrecks I owned were done with an oily Haynes manual in one hand and a collection of things that might vaguely be described as tools in the other... Lots of swearing, skinned knuckles, ruined clothing and second or third attempts to get stuff working.

    Nice to see new videos from you guys ✌️. Please do not blame "Land Rover" for bad repairs. The guys from the dealers are unexperienced, they just don't think and it is not just the JLR dealers... For an 8HP70 oil leak concern from the back of the automatic transmission, the root cause of the leak, can also be a porosity issue with the case. I am happy to support ;)

    Hey Christian and Vera, I'm sorry to see that you have been hit by so many Land Rover dealer mistakes, but it is good for the channel. Haha. The worst of it on the old Mall Crawler was your oil level sensor, but that was a design flaw and not the dealer I guess. This Discovery 4 will give you plenty of videos!! Haha

      Yes, the sensor was screwed up in the Ford assembly plant. Larry, who mounted this sensor had a bad day because Manchester United lost the day before. He did not even see straight but he came to work in the Dagenham plant in the morning shift starting a 4am. Most engines he worked on that day got a lose connector. Bad luck. Christian

    Regarding corroded bolts, I always give the heads on mine a light covering of a thick grease. As long as the bolts are not directly in the path of road water, it prevents the heads from corroding.
    Note that I only grease the bolts once they are in place, I don't apply any grease to the underside of the bolt heads.

    That car is a steal buy. Almost new. Great job guys! The leak maybe because of the cleaning that was not fully dried. It seemed very minimal taking a look seemed its almost next to none. Everything is easier with you guys!

    Fab video guys. Thank you! Very informative and confidence building 🙂 I am about to tackle fitting new differential bearings front and rear shortly.

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, changing differential bearings is major undertaking and requires indepth knowledge about differentials. We only have changed the front differential seal on Fabian's Discovery 3. And on our own Disco 3, there are thankfully no signs of wear in the diffs. But Outback Discovery has taken his front diff apart and serviced it. Here are the links to his videos th-cam.com/video/3p2XyYGnuRM/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/L8iYJppRfwo/w-d-xo.html Maybe they are of help to you. 😀🙋‍♀️Vera

      @@Vera_and_Christian Vera, thank you for the links :) I am hoping me being an engineer and metrologist will hold me good stead for rebulding my diffs, getting everything correct for a smooth runner. It is the side bearings that have gone bad.

    I think that the gearbox breather may have been pinched / blocked when a previous repair from the dealer was done. They’ve obviously been under there to service it and try and fix the noise

    Good video👍 My wild guess will be that the leak is coming from the mechatronic sleeve connector housing, it's got an o-ring. But i don't know if it's prone to leakage? Ps. in some of the underbody videos, you may need some better lighting. It's a bit difficult to see where you're at some times.

  • @torchyboyz
    @torchyboyz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it must be the seal from the gearbox output to the transfer box. If not then it is the gearbox breather hose blocked. Love, Paul.

    All the oils taste slightly different. Just a touch and you can recognise what is leaking. The cause of the leak is that you have a Land Rover. I had one and it used to leak so much and burn so much I never had to do oil changes. Just keep topping up and change filters as appropriate.

    Because it was dripping from a bolt my guess is the bolt has been installed by Land Rover without a sealing washer. You have since removed bolt and fitted a washer and replaced.

    I think the aftermarket metal pans are actually better than the OEM ZF pans. It's a good design, better than the flat rubber gaskets you normally see, but it is very sensitive to being over torqued. When I did my 6HP the torque spec was just a hair, maybe a quarter turn over hand tight. Whenever I see people doing these pans (not you) they don't use a torque wrench and just crank down on it, which causes the gasket to roll out and get crushed.

  • @fredsabio4765
    @fredsabio4765 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The leak Is from the mechatronic connector sleeve… but u need to remove the transmission Oil Pan in order to move the lever to release the sleeve. Need to replace the gasket and new Oil again.

    One of the transfer case housing bolts required thread sealant as it passes through to the transfer case internals where there is gear fluid? I hope it doesn't, though you do see that in engines where bolts pass through water and oil galleries.

    Comment no. 3
    The Toyota screws weren't, when tied/closed, applying sufficient pressure to hold the assembly together as needed. This allowed, in specific situations for ATF fluid to gather in a low point and leak.

    Firstly say I really like your videos. Thanks for the time and the effort to make them for us... It is a lot of work. Second, I don't own any Land Rover from 1998 on... all my landies are basically Tdi's, is not the same as Discos 3 or 4, I know but I don't drive long distances cause here in Gran Canaria the longest highway is 70kms... lol I still enjoy the videos and you guys as a couple working together!
    About the failure... Maybe a casting fail during the casting of the gearbox facing the transfer and oil gets the drain hole, and there you go, you have a leak in there.

    When removing or draining the autobox a clear ‘under bed’ plastic storage box is useful… they are available shallow but are wider and longer than the pan so catch the spills 👍

      The oil is black in the end. You wouldn't see anything. We rather use a magnet or filter the oil, if we are in fear that chips are in. Which was not the case here. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera
