hahaha yes they are funky! As for the bolts coming undone, the car is in bits having repairs so often, I would be mightly disgruntled if they didn't just come undone.
Hi guys, great video. Do you know would it be more work to fit a M57 along with the 8 speed gearbox to a G Wagon? It has a OM606 with Dieselmekken mechanical pump and 6 speed manual. I find it’s takes a while to spool so it’s a bit dead at low revs where the M57 seems to have great low down and that 8 speed gearbox looks the business!
I’ve never personally swapped a g-wagon but I can’t see if being too much different to other 4x4s we’ve done. Email us if you want to explore that further… laurence@laurenceandthemachine.com
Great content. Just an observation that you seem to have removed the transfer box shifter. Does this mean this conversion will mean doing away with the 4 wheel drive!
Great video going to be doing my patrol following head gasket failing ( and after going in Luke's) very well presented you made it a lot easier understand 👌
Hey mate, How is the economy on that thing now after some good driving? Considering doing that kind of thing, to make a Disco 2 a comparable daily driver!
I drives lovely now. I have this and a 5 series 6 speed and I would drive the Land Rover everyday. In terms of economy I can see around the 30-35 mpg mark with my tent on and loaded up. It does pretty well.
Ah driveway working is hard. Best bet is to get it on a jack and get it into position that way. The hardest bit is locating it on the shaft so just turn the propshaft flanges until it goes on. Thats just one of those things that gets easier the more times you do it.
Very good video👌, I also plan to change the engine for my disco 2, but what type of M57 engine did you install? M57 184/193hp control vacuum, M57N 204hp euro3 control vacuum, M57N 204hp euro4 control electric, M57N 218hp euro3 control vacuum , M57N 218 euro4 control electric. One more question, which F series 8speed transmission did you put under. Thank you!
I originally fitted the M57N 218hp Euro 3 vaccum controlled but now it is mostly electric controlled thanks to the DDE6 controller. The gearbox I used for the 8 speed swap was the 8HP70x.
I'm not well up on the exact codes for this. But if you email hello@house-of-torque.com they will sort you out with what you need. They may even have one in stock.
You can leave the standard lever connected and it all still works. As it happens my low range and diff lock is all operated via compressed air and actuators so just needed plugging in when the transfer box went back in.
Hi mate thanks for a great information mate I got a quick question I have dis2 but I am planning om606 turbo mechanical my question if I have to fit zf8hp how could that be controlled any advice would be much appreciated.
Your best bet is to buy a Flatcap Engineering dashboard controller from House of Torque. Pretty much a plug and play box and makes the entire dashboard convert to the correct readings.
Very interesting swap. I noticed you don't have a range selector in the console, what are you using to shift the t-case and does it also work your center lock?
Hi yes. All the hi-lo and CDL is controlled by actuators and compressed air. So its it’s just a switch these days. Miles better than fighting with levers.
For this, you’d best to speak to House of Torque. He has a team that will do the conversion for you and they will be able to give you more accurate costs.
Nice video, very interested in the Disco 2 M57 conversion. I am partiuclarly interested in the original conversion you did and how much fof the original Disco 2 wiring you kept? Things like fuse box, bpdy wiring etc. There doesnt seem to be alot of Disco 2 info online, most people are doing it to defenders.
Hi mate, all the d2 wiring stays the same barring all the plugs that go to the engine thanks to the house of torque control boxes which you can find on their website. We have done all types of conversions and I would say the d2 is one of the hardest due to the tight space in the engine bay and trying to make the interior look half decent but whilst it is hard, it is defintely worth the conversion, makes a world of difference keeping up with Golf R's!
@@laurenceandthemachine This is great. I am hoping to rechassis my disco 2 at the same time as the conversion. does the m57 sit in the right place to mount to the td5 mounts on the chassis?
Yes, you'd struggle with one of them, but to get the full effect from the 8 speed you need some power behind it anyroad. Stick an M57 in it, you'll love it!
I’ve searched the internet and can’t get an answer I want to do this sort of swap but have no knowledge of mechanics do u know of anywhere I can drive to have all the work done and hand over cash and if so what would be a ball park figure thanks for any help 👍🏻
Hi mate, if you're serious about having a conversion done send me an email at laurence@laurencenandthemachine.com and I'll put you in touch with some guys I know do a good job.
Do you mean low range? If so, no. A few have asked this question but my low range and diff lock is operated by compressed air so all you have to do it flick a switch to put it into low range
Great work. I'm considering using an 8hp with my D2a om606 swap. One concern i have is that the box will have too many gears - being honest, do you actually find yourself using 7th and 8th?
They did for me because mine was already converted. When I did the engine conversion I changed the transfer box mounts but not by much. Couple if inches if that.
Out of interest, why was the turbo, throttle body and manifold change needed? Was this required for the 8 speed or is this just a midification you happened to be making at the same time?
The ECU I used was from a newer model of engine so the electric actuator on the turbo and throttle body needed to be changed so that the ECU could control them. All clever stuff really, so I had to have help with which bits to buy.😂
I still have traction control. House of Torque do a box that converts all the signals for the system. And I must say it works better than it does with a td5 in because the wheel speed differences are much higher so the system pulls the brakes on much harder. @@laurenceandthemachine the Puma had its chance haha! Thanks mate, thats really kind. I've seen you can still XHP flash the original TCU too which is bonkers. Mpg wise, it has improved(I haven’t specifically tested it) but the needle noticeably goes down slower😂 The car will now cruise quite nicely at 70 - 75 at 2000rpm.
I went down a diffrent path with my 300tdi d1 and fitted a 1.003 transfer box and while slower to accelerate i gained 3mpg 1500rpm at 50 and 2000rpm at 70/75mph
Fascinating! Thinking of welcoming a Disco 2 back to the family so this is just what I needed! Ace !

How do shift the transfer case between high, low range and diff lock
That is all done with compressed air, using overhead switches.
Very good stuff,I am definitely building that with a 110 wolf defender
We've done a couple of 110 conversions and they drive great! Totally worth it.
Great video mate, Ive just had my gearbox out. Any tips for getting the transfer case back in? I’m one man on a driveway.

I would say the best people to speak to is CANformance Engineering. They will have more info than I do.
Hey, great job ! Quick question : how do you manage to get the rpm to your original cluster ?
That’s all done with the Discovery 2 dashboard controller from Flatcap engineering. All sold through House of Torque.
Is the 8 speed the same gearbox as the discovery 4? ZF 8HP70
Yes this is the 8hp 70
Did you have to cut the bell housing for the starter motor?
Yes the bell housing needs to be cut. House of torque have since brought out a nice 3d printed cover for this.

The transfer box is the standard discovery 2 one, with diff lock so 1.2 ratio. Good balance of acceleration and cruising speed.

No no mate, I converted it. Great conversion to do for drivability, especially with the 8 speed.
