Peridot realising during her conversation that the way Yellow Diamond talked to her made her feel small, a feeling she learned about from the Crystal Gems. They treated her well, something she's never experienced before. Gotta love her 💚

She suddenly went from being the peridot to _a_ peridot.

So just to go through a bit what Peridot was thinking in these episodes, I think she does care about the Earth and wants to protect it. She describes Yellow Diamond as this ultimately rational, logical being. Peridot really believes this and thinks Yellow Diamond can be reasoned with if the logic used is strong enough. Peridot wants to protect the Earth and is trying to think of a way to do that. To her, the Crystal Gems' strategy has been a failure. Yes, they delayed the inevitable, but the Earth was still destined to eventually be destroyed by the Cluster. For Peridot, the logically best way to save the Earth is to convince Yellow Diamond of its usefulness as-is and have Homeworld help to terminate the Cluster. This plan allows Peridot to save the Earth while also remaining loyal to her Diamond.
But once she finally does start talking to Yellow Diamond face-to-face, she comes to see that her idea of Yellow Diamond was false. Peridot tries to tell Yellow Diamond about her plan to utilize the planet without disrupting the local life there, but Yellow Diamond cuts her off. She's not interested in a rational conversation about maximizing potential or resources. She wants her Cluster and she wants that planet to die. Yellow is being ruled by emotion, not logic. Peridot literally starts to question her objectivity. This is when she really becomes disillusioned with Homeworld, when the illusion of the Diamonds as perfect beings gets crushed. And that's when she decides to defy Yellow Diamond and defend the Earth. I've always really enjoyed how Peridot was written in these episodes and like how subtle it all is.
It's really neat when You think about it.
By all means Peridot's proposal make complete sense. However, she never expected to the diamonds to be acting by anything other than reason.
However as we Will learn on future episodes, they have their own personal agenda on why they seek to destroy the earth, one not fueled by reason but by emotions.
At that moment of her confrontation with Yellow Diamond, it’s
like the same thought went through her head that Steven had thought about her. “I shouldn’t have to tell her. She should just know. Why is she acting like this?”
So proud of Peridot for telling off Yellow Diamond like that!
The writing in "Message Received" is really clever. When you first watch it seems like Peridot is betraying the gems, but if you run through her actual dialog after watching the episode, she really just thought that Yellow Diamond would be rational enough that she could present a reason to preserve the planet and YD would listen, and that's how they'd solve the problem of the Cluster. As for WHY YD so irrationally wants "that hideous rock" "to die" instead of keeping the Earth around, that's yet to be revealed.
Yep, as others have pointed out, the thing that really broke Peridot's loyalty was seeing that Yellow Diamond was not the perfectly rational being that she was portrayed as on Homeworld. You can see the look of betrayed confusion on her face when Yellow says "I don't care about potential or resources" - until that point she had a firm belief that if she just explained the logical reasons to do so, Yellow Diamond would stop the Cluster and save Earth

the reeason why it happened like this is very simple . Peridot was seeing Yellow as rational a diamond who never let the emotions rule out the reason. Peri thought that Yellow didn't know how to utilize the planet without destroying it ,that is why when Yellow says she wants the planet to die it makes no logical sense in Peri eyes.

Yellow Diamond's voice actress is broadway legend Patti LuPone and it was a very appropriate casting because she's known for her immense self-confidence and not being shy about throwing her weight around as one of the great talents of the industry. Later in the series you get to hear how incredible her singing is as well, it's a real treat

These episodes are really good and I'm really exited for future epiodes.
I saw Patti LuPone in concert last month, and although I have been obsessed with her for years because she’s a musical theatre legend, all I could think about when she spoke was Yellow Diamond haha.
I vividly remember being on tumblr when these episodes aired and a ton of people freaking out over the first appearance of yellow diamond.. and making memes about her long neck lol. Good times.
I love the foreshadowing in the ep. Rewatching it with ya’ll is so fun. I can’t wait for more. It’s just getting started. Yellow Clod won’t forget about the earth 😂😂

I will say that, despite how mean Yellow Diamond comes across in this episode, she isn't totally heartless or cruel. She doesn't really get upset when Peridot tells her that they crashed the ship and destroyed it. She says that a ship will be sent to Earth to take Peridot and Jasper to their next assignment. And even when Peridot starts talking back to Yellow Diamond and saying no, she still gives Peridot a final opportunity to redeem herself by following her orders. As far as monarchs go, she isn't as terrible as she could be.

Now that Yellow Diamond has shown up in person (so to speak), and Blue Diamond has been name dropped several times, I feel I can openly talk about this. On one of your earliest videos of this series, I eluded to some background foreshadowing. If you were to go back and pay attention to the background stuff pertaining to Gem culture, you can see a lot of diamond iconography.

This was the first episode of Steven universe I ever saw, I was bored on a plane and my DS had died so I decided to watch this show I had heard about "a kid with a belly button piercing"( that was my ignorant perspective back then) though I had almost no contacts for what was happening It made me watch the rest of the show and now it's my second favorite TV show of all time
Steven inviting Peridot to sit on the throne is extra cute AF knowing that he's a diamond

Remember from Marble Madness how Peridot knew nothing about the "Crystal Gems", that she knew only that Gems were supposedly wiped out on Earth. So, it seems that the Diamonds kept everything about the Crystal Gem rebellion--obviously the biggest challenge the Diamond Authority faced and their most embarrassing debacle--secret from those who didn't experience it, and ordered all Gems who had been veterans to keep silent, much like how the Imperial Japanese government kept silent about military failures like Midway and Guadalcanal and commanded the survivors to keep silent as well. Peridot received *some* kind of probably redacted history about the rebellion after she herself saw these "Crystal Gems", but she seems to have believed that Yellow Diamond was only misled about the Earth, and couldn't understand that her "brilliant" and "rational" Diamond might be motivated by base emotions like vengeance.
Now, if Steven can get Lapis away from Jasper, perhaps he can add her to the newly burgeoning "Team Steven". Now including Connie, the Crystal Gems are beginning to expand beyond what was just Team Rose Quartz and Steven.
kind of crazy how peridots actions in marble madness have pretty damning consequences for steven and the other gems all the way in season 4

23 is one of my favorite SU episodes. They managed to progress the story so much in just one cute little song.
I wander why such a rational gem as YD ignored the unique resources earth has to offer for a simple geo weapon. Seems like she want the Earth gone no matter the cost... What might ger motives be ;)

12:00 Definitely not lol. It's not like Yellow has ever coddled and spoken to them in a soft voice. She's their ultimate leader, she's _always_ spoken to them like this. If anything she's just mad that Yellow isn't "objectively" seeing her proposal of a better plan, especially since, in her eyes, Yellow could do no wrong and sees all right. So why can't she see the merit in Peridot's plan?

When you think about it
Yellow's hatred for the Earth sounds excessive if it's just another colony
But with the later reveals it makes so much sense because it literally represents their failure regarding W's perfectionism, and P's deathplace
She's talking out of anger, grief and frustration

In the end, she was trying to protect the Earth in her own way. The Crystal Gems do tend to be more emotional than regular gems, not seeing things too rationally, that's where Peridot's conflict with them started in the last episode, she thought "but it's so simple! I only have to tell my Diamond how useful this planet is, because she's as rational as me and will see the benefit of the cluster". Of course the CGs didn't want to hear it, they know a Diamond won't be as reasonable and alas, it blew up in Peridot's face (almost literally) where her paragon of intelligence and calculated decisions just crumbled, and saw Yellow Diamond as another flawed individual who can't think logically.
