@@DeathKitta yeah it seemed like for a long time Steven was just in survival mode and put himself on the back burner for everyone else. that's why to this day i still love the joy ride episode, bc that was the one time others were there for Steven. he didnt get that enough. after he didnt need to be in survival mode anymore, he was finally forced to deal with everything he set aside

The fact that Greg and Rose's failed attempt at fusing is what sparked them to have actual conversation about how their relationship will work and how afraid they are of the situation, while also making the gems realize Rose may be changing because of this one human who tried and failed at doing a gem thing is so poetic in a way. This story could have ended so tragically, but the last thing we see is just them smiling and dancing. Whatever and however they're gonna make the relationship work, they will find a way.
It's kind of sad to think though that all the previous humans Rose had a relationship with were more like little fun playthings. Greg is the first one who made her think more of it.

In regards to Greg and Steven fusing, I think it's important to note that fusion is not strictly for those in a romantic relationship, but also for two or more people who are close enough to do so (Stevonnie) or need to do so (like Opal or Alexandrite).
Yeah that's what 'We need to talk' is all about. And Garnet's song. Fusion is conversation. A relationship. Any relationship.

Peridot wasn't the one fusing the gem shards... If you've noticed on this and other episodes, she's just checking in the status of the experiments... Notice Peridot uses those words and Garnet says "So this is what Homeworld thinks of fusion!"; ergo, this was something that was above Peridot's ranking.

The reason why Rose got pregnant is because she shapeshifted her form to have a womb, the same way Amethyst shapeshift her form to have a stomach and other human organs to eat

Rose died because she kept her form shapeshifted for 9 month straight.

I mean the shards are essentially the disassembled corpses of their friends and comrades being Frankensteined into living weapons. Not only that it’s using an extremely personal symbol of love and connection for Garnet to do this.
I remember the first time seeing Garnet's reaction, it was gut wrenching. Like it's an insult to everything she is and cares about, a desecration so completely tailored towards her.
i love that the forced fusion also, in a way, feels like a conversation about consent. in an appropriate form that kids can understand. fusion is all about both parties (or all parties if multiple gems involved) agreeing to join together. in garnet's case, her fusion is literally a relationship. in the season 1 finale where jasper and lapis fused, we could see them barely holding together and garnet commented that "those two are really bad for each other" furthering the metaphor of fusions representing relationships. how pushing individuals together without them wanting to be is Not fusion, it's just disgusting.
and yeah, it's so wild to see garnet freeze up and just stare in horror. it definitely leaves an impact, and emphasizes the weight of the situation.
i write this comment and then the very next episode they're questioning whether fusion = sex as in if greg and rose fused to make steven 😂 so glad they're enjoying greg's character though.

To be fair we never got a real answer to Steven’s conception outside of Rose giving up her form. Given it’s supposed to be a kids show and all haha.

An additional horror of the frankengems (and cracking/shattering in general) is that the stones are a gem's *mind*. The frankengems weren't fusions, they were welded together.
If you have seen castlevania it's pretty much what happens to dracula and his wife and that was the plan of a being that fed off death and was trying to create the greatest engine of death imaginable.
greg is genuinely one of my favourite characters in the whole show - he's SO cool

I've always thought that the way Rose talks to Greg in this episode, just laughing at his comments and saying things like "Oh you're so funny!" and added to the question of "This is not how it works?" represent what she has learned about human relationships and trying to copy them. My theory is that she's mimicking what she saw humans do in the past, and since she's seen and treated as a woman by human standards in the past she was probably subjected to the type of human dynamics in which the woman just has to laugh, flirt and smile for a relationship to work. But now with Greg, she starts to learn she has to be her own person, be an equal to him and add her own part for this to work between them. It's a subtle but nice way to show a change in her perspective of human relationships and how they're kept.
And this why pearl have that weird reaction when Steven and connie first fuse

I think it’s interesting that Garnet (Ruby) says “This is punishment for the rebellion” and Garnet (Sapphire) “it’s not *our* fault” bc in both ways this did happen directly because of Garnet. Garnet was the first time Homeworld had seen fusions with two different Gems. Who else would they use to try to recreate it other than the gems of your enemies?
I think that the roles in that dialogue are actually the other way around, sapphire is kinda more pessimistic about all that war stuff

Oh man I’m kind of dreading the Cry For Help arc now lol… those episodes depend on having at least a little sympathy for Pearl built up. Watching these guys react to it is going to be… an experience.

SPOILERS: what’s really sad about the gem fragments is that garnet was the first different fusion seen, which means that she was what probably inspired these gems to be force fused, which is probably why she said “it’s not our fault”
Keeping it Together has to be the first episode that got me legit creeped out when it came out, that entire corrupted fusion part was pure nightmare fuel.
We need to Talk on the other way looking back at it is a legit underrated episode, even back then I barely saw people talking about it but watching you guys react to it made me see how good of an episode is, these last 2 reactions have at least 3 episodes that I consider extremely top tier and big reasons as of why S2 is my favorite season of the show. Great reaction as always
Keeping It Together tells you, if there was the slightest doubt before, even after The Return/Jailbreak, about what kind of opponents the Crystal Gems (and Earth in general) are dealing with. Garnet's horrified reaction is understandable, it would be like GIs in 1944 facing Frankenstein zombie soldiers reanimated by the Nazis from the bodies of their dead buddies.
We Need To Talk is a particularly good example of SU's morality play format, one that hopefully leaves a positive impression on younger viewers about the importance of communication, but without being preachy. I also like the irony of Pearl's action...her attempt to convince Greg that he meant nothing to Rose except as a play toy backfired as it encouraged Greg to up his game and eventually win Rose's respect and love. Greg was visibly dismayed by Rose's patronizing lyrics, and before Pearl stepped in to fuse with Rose and try to throw this in Greg's face, he might have conceived second thoughts about his relationship with Rose and leave Pearl the victor.
If you knew of SU only from the first episodes, or memes on the internet, you would never know how the series changed from the adventures of a goofy kid caught up in a world of magic, to one that asks questions about whether there are things worth fighting--and maybe dying--for. SU isn't grimdark, but it often gets pretty dark.
I think gems wear clothes cuz it's their uniform (on homeworld). Like the outfit they wear shows their rank as well as their diamond. You probably already came to this assumption as well considering how far ahead you are on patreon lol but when you mentioned that, it got me thinking
To put things into perspective these gem shard fusions are the equivalent of the human centipede. They are baisically just stiching jems together. That is terryfying.
If we did get a Greg Steven fusion, it would 100% have to be called steg, can't changey mind

Oh these episodes are so good imo
- "Keeping It Together" is horrifying isn’t it & fun fact the scene of Garnet's horrified reaction shot art style is similar to the dramatic reaction shots from 1970s & 80s anime
- Rose & Pearl’s fusion is called Rainbow Quartz which is associated with hope and optimism, & her outfit closely resembles the 80s - 90s dancing /workout outfit
- Notice the eyes of the fusion monster relooks like the ones from the Sahaquiel from Evangelion or the Antibody Coralians from Eureka Seven

The reason the crystal gems look like they're wearing clothing is because they've purposefully selected their form to mimic human clothing of the time period they are currently in. Pearl's clothings are supposed to be slightly in the past, amethysts in the present and garnets in the future in terms of aesthetic. This is why amethyst looks like a purple human the most out of the gems, her aesthetic is just that

That of the fragments stuck together, or gem mutants, as they will be refered in the future, is a really terrifying concept, like a frankenstein kind of stuff. That scene honestly gives me the chills.
For Garnet is especially painful because she basically created the concept of fusion with different gems. She sees it as a relation, both sides have to agree and don't be forced into it if they don't want to. That forced fusion goes against everything she knows, believes and feels about fusion.
2:23 the clothing argument is summarized easily
Look at the Pokémon Gardevior. Is the Pokémon wearing clothes? No. The dress is part of its body and therefor looks like clothing but is not clothing.
Same for Machamp. They appear to wear undergarments and a belt. But the belt and garments are part of the pokemons physical body. Not anything removable or cloth material.
Therefor Gems don’t wear clothing, they have clothing like appearances. Unless they specifically put on clothing they aren’t wearing clothes

And this time it's not about others not knowing how to care for Steven, but the inherent loneliness of being the only hybrid to exist. Everyone expecting you to be the best of both worlds, while you feel you'll never fully fit in either of those worlds.

Comments are acting as if it’s rare and heartless to be annoyed at Pearl during this era. Remember y’all they don’t know the full story while we viewers do. I was annoyed by Pearl around this season too but gradually started to like her again. They may do the same if you just let them watch it like the rest of us did 🤷🏻♀️
On the topic of gems having babies, we know that when gems are formed in the ground they take life energy from earth which is why the kindergarten looks so dead, so what if that is why Rose disappeared, stevens Gem side had to absorb life energy but he wasn't made in the ground like the others so he had to absorb Roses life energy
Basically fusion gotta be consentual at the very least. Lapis entered a toxic relationship, but she chose to- still not healthy but better than being broken apart and forced together like the shards

What's funny is in the episode Marble Madness. Peridot was pulling out the columns to check on the forced fusions. Had Steven not ran up to talk to peridot they would have seen the forced fusions earlier.
Death for a Gem, or "Shattering..." isn't death...
It's so much worse.
It's pieces of an immortal, sentient being, broken apart, mind broken too, yearning forever for nothing more than to become whole again. In vain.
However cool it might seem to BE a Gem, this inevitable fate will certainly visit them all eventually. A fate that can readily be equated to as hellish as anything conjured by a religion.
Since it's a kids show they've always been coy about how a gem and human reproduction works, remember, there's never been anything like Steven before.

Ah, s2ep7. The ep in which we finally see what Homeworld really is capable of. U gotta realise though, it's not just abt desecrating the "bodies" of those deceased gems, it's abt leaving them with no choice even after their death. It's abt the empire punishing those who rebelled against it by taking away everything they valued from them. Forever. This is a theme of choice, or rather lack of it, 1 of the big themes of SU and 1 of the things that makes Homeworld (and any empire in general) so awful even for those who belong to it. U either conform to everything the Empire demands, or suffer. Forever. Become a symbol of despair in the name of Homeworld perfection. Chilling. As for s2ep8, it's really interesting, because u see just how confused Rose was in her relationship with Greg. She didn't even consider it smth serious at 1st, but he did. And it's his conviction that makes Rose truly fall in love with him. As for Pearl, u gotta remember she gave her whole life to Rose and based her whole self-esteem on Rose, so of course she's gonna be clingey. Is it healthy? No. Is it understandable? Yes.

Also, by the way, it’s been pretty apparent, that Fusion in this Show, has been an Allegory for Relationships, in general, not just the Romantic kind, that has been a common misconception by the a part of the Fandom.

Even if gems didn't have any clothes, they wouldn't have any private parts since gems aren't created with them. A gem would only have such parts if they were like Rose Quartz who purposely gave herself those parts maybe because she admired the human race so much that she wanted to look more like them. Also so that Steven could be born.

Just to clarify things fusion it’s not just about romantic partner taking a new form. Pearl and Amethyst fuse to make Opal (and they are just friends). Garnet, Pearl and Amethyst fuse to make Alexandrite. Steven can fuse with Connie because he is half human half gem.
This is a really fucked up analogy, but what homeworld is doing to these gem shards is similar in concept as punishment to what Mengele was doing as experiments to all the prisoners of war during WWll. Sorry if that’s kinda f’d up but it’s what it reminds me of. It’s incomprehensibly cruel and unforgivable in Garnet’s eyes. Fusion can be love and patience and all things but also when forced or coerced , it’s beyond forgivable in many ways

yeah you guys should know that steven can heal cracked gems, but if a gem shatters he cant revive them, shattering is death for gems. part of why it was so horrifying to garnet, it was like looking at your comrades limbs stitched together forcefully, just bits and pieces of who they were meshed together.
The more stable the fusion the humanoid they appear, the more unstable the fusion the more monstrous they appear. That's why malachite looked off compared to Opal etc.

I think Garnet freaks out and is so disturbed by the gem fragments being forced together is it is a perversion of something so core to her being. For her, it is a beautiful combination of people in love. The forced combos are horrific and depraved attempts at advancing the species.
