My wife bought a set of Top Flight tour XL for my Christmas gift. After not having played for almost 10 years, I excited to get out and play this season. The only club I bought outside of the set is a well-used Odyssey Sabertooth BackStryke instead of the all metal mallet it came with (had smooth face). I'm curious if I can outperform my past years of golf with much cheaper equipment this time.

I bought my set of Cobras five years ago. I spent $600 on the set of irons. Add the two hybrids, the 5W, the Callaway 3W and Callaway driver, Odyssey putter and I have no intention of buying new clubs. Just getting them regripped when the grips wear out. I've even reconditioned the grips by using all purpose spray and a wire brush and gotten extra years out of them. Golf is expensive.
That's a great starter set until one gets good enough or committed enough that they're going to play regularly. If they're just trying out the game, great. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on clubs. But honestly Rick, you can buy used irons on ebay for a couple hundred dollars a set 4-PW for 5 year old Mizunos.

I was a bit addicted to buying fishing gear so now I have a basement full of rods and reels. The Shimano rods and reels are so smooth! Current models are 3x better than 6-7 years ago. For $150 the spinning reels are the best.
But made for soft japanese hands so the rods are breakable. I know this but my friend did not... snap! If you like fishing, buy a Shimano $150 the spinning reel. For $100 you don't get the best so aim $150 or a bit above.
A 4000 model is the allrounder. The *Stradic 4000* has the line retrieve of a normal larger 5000 model but as lightweight as a normal smaller 2500.
*Stradic 4000* the ultimate fishing reel!
Together with Powerpro braid line a great combo!

My set of clubs are an off brand called Solaris. Dented up and dirty. These clubs were $150 new and I got them lightly used in a bag with socks on 3 wood, 5 wood, and the driver with a rain cover and full set of irons for $60 US from a sports reseller. Is it the best set of clubs... I'm sure no. But I get out and shank them with the best of my friends that have nice clubs.
I'd rather beat up cheap clubs then cry over digging holes with an expensive set!

Thank you for you honesty. Rare quality these days, specially from a golf pro. I'm a mid handicapper and I still play with a set of DCI 762 from early 2000s and although I know there are a lot more forgiving irons out there I prefer to spend my money on lessons to improve my game not in masquerading it with forgiving clubs.
I recently bought 3 clubs, a driver, a 15ª wood and a 23º hybrid. All new from past seasons in a local golf club store sale to substitute very old clubs (a 975D driver and a Wilson Deep Red III 3 wood) and the hybrid after I saw your Hybrid rescue shoots video. Brand new but at minimum 50% discount from street price at least. A 917D2 for under 200, a 917F2 for under 120 and a 816H1 also for under 120 €. In addition I bought a Ping Anser series blade putter for 98€ to substitute a very old Homma anser like blade putter.
All these brand new with no use whatsoever. I'm very happy about it since I didn't spend a whole amount of money. I have not found that much of a difference since the old clubs were very good as well although I noticed a bit more of forgiveness, specially on the driver. If I had to spend new street price on them (almost same as retail here in Spain) I would have never bought them.
Brands have to understand that most average golfers would not buy new equipment as often if they charge as much as they do nowadays...

I’ve played golf like three times, but I can tell you as a semi serious bass guitarist, I can make $120 near toy bass work on a record. And a goon can’t get a $5000 vintage rig to sound that good. I imagine it’s the same.
The 1st most important thing is practice. A hand-me-down bass isn’t going to have the best tone or sustain, but if you play it you’ll get good.

I did that. I got a set of Top Flight clubs and bag, used literally one time for $100. Driver, 3 wood, hybrid 4 & 5 irons 6 thru 9, pw, sw, and putter. I know they’re not the best performing clubs but I just started playing. I have 2 rounds under my belt. And most importantly, I’m happy with them. I bought about 250 used balls from eBay and I’m loving it. I started for about $200 total, clubs and balls.
Watching Rick has helped me become immensely better! I hit most drives straight now and my iron play, which was my worst part of my game is much better! I only played 2 rounds but put in a lot of time on the range. My best score of the 2 rounds was 119 on a par 72. But I have fun, which is most important.

I don't think you can go wrong with them for £70. The bag seems good quality and if you consider that to be £40 your only risking £30 on 6 clubs. Top tip buy them on line from Sports@irect as when I went to the shop they were £100 and they weren't too pleased to be price matching. You could buy the better V300 club's individually same place for £11.99 each but again I'd buy online as they don't always have the club your looking for in the shop. Hope this helps
