Having same issues with back I think, sounds the same anyways. Got it checked out and they were saying it was issue with the muscle holding up the spine. Recommended to do some core exercises to strengthen the back muscles. Also went to get lessons for swing, and pretty much recommended same thing. Trying to take the hand down first to shallow club then turn. Much easier on the back so far

I have been working on this very thing. Great timing, finding this. I struggle sometimes with the reverse pivot, not properly allocating my weight/pressure, but I sometimes move so far forward in the downswing that my left shoulder spins out to the left. Using the head as the anchor point/top of the pendulum is so important.
Playa! One of your best vlogs. I'm a 5 handicapper that could be significantly better with an optimum driver swing. This vlog is going to help me ALOT this season! Thx!
Great video, so nice to see the shot from behind you, then see the stats. I worked on this "head" and rotating at the right hip thing yesterday on the range and was really hitting the ball well. Also have moved the ball back in my stance more and it seems to help with better impact.

It's just so interesting. I have undergone the exact same swing change and I felt my whole left side go sore for weeks. The thing is, I developped the same ache in my elbows as well. It's called Golfers Elbow for a reason. There are excellent YT videos addressing that and the ways to train that out. Be aware, I had already started to develop a carpal tunnel syndrome (cts) in my left hand. Now you don't want THAT !. It takes months to get rid of. Now, I am 58 y old and only started to take golf seriously 2 years ago and I am now a 15.1 hcp. So I somewhat overdid it. But even more younger people can get all that.
You can tell Eric really knows what he's talking about in the way he explains things. Makes concepts very easy to grasp with how he phrases them and examples he uses. Wish I had a coach like that around here, especially because I seem to be struggling with a similar issue! Also do you know what the cause of the pain above your right hip/buttock is? I have experienced the same pain before but it's usually in my lead side hip/buttock
Good to see a positive golf lesson bedding in in real time (so to speak). I am getting a vicarious feel good factor from this and can feel hopes and dreams returning. Sweet.
@@GolfSidekick Current HI is 21.3 When qualifier season gets going here in Ireland I intend to be playing off a scoring handicap of 18 by years end (roughly HI of 16.1) and in 2024 I intend to improve to a scoring handicap of 15 (which is what I used to play off before my wilderness years). Now Matty Boy please don't ask me about my politics and what my hopes and dreams are there or I will be kicked off youtube!!!🤣🤣
I get exactly the same pains at times that you described. I saw a pro and discovered i had a reverse pivot. This is the cause of my pain. As Eric said i need to stop tipping and just rotate and not extend to much and just swing easy through the shot. I tend to try and smash the crap out of the shot but seem to do better when swinging freely.
I recall watching video's in the past where they mentioned to practice swing drills against a wall. In regards to that and this video, I realized my head wasn't still at all. I've recently adopted this phrase as my last though prior to swinging any club, "My head is against a wall." (the side of my face, facing the target to be more exact) And I kid you not, I went from shooting mid to high 50s (on 9 holes), slicing all over, and insanely inconsistent contact to posting a 48, 46, 51 and a 43 in my last 4 rounds at league, much to the chagrin of my opponents who see a 12 handicap shooting sub 50 and thinking sand bagger. I love it though, playing from the fairway, hitting greens from decent distances out, if I could learn how to putt I might reach a sub 40. long story short, keep that head still.
This is one of the best ones for me. I’ve had the same duck hook. My speed is lower than yours but the same open face toe strike. Same pain low right back, right neck and inner elbow. Gonna work on not over extending and keeping my head in place behind the ball.
Thanks for your sharing guy that I tried to find what a problem with my swing and ball alway hook to the left . So this video show me what the exactly problem.

Hey Matt, when you talked about all the swing thoughts going through your head that ultimately ruin your swing, it really resonated with me. I was like, yep, that's me. The difference in your swing and the results made by you just thinking about your head position was huge. I bet you're really happy! Happy grinding!
We have the exact same problem with the Driver lol, I have been searching for a solution for a year now and I finally found this. It's funny, I was just watching a video about keeping your ear behind the ball, but I couldn't see why that would fix it. Finally, I have something simple I can work on. Just like you, I was working everything from ball position to grip and couldn't get something consistent. The only thing that worked for me was trying to hit a cut every time, which ended up straight for me. I can see now that trying to hit a cut naturally kept my head behind the ball lol. This game man, it "drives" you mad. Thanks!
I had a lesson last week and had this exact problem with the same solution. Its hard changing ingrained habits though and I still get that out to in swing path. But least I know how to work on it now.
@15:45-16:55 is the perfect explanation for why every golfer with a good swing needs to find the right pro to give them the “key” tip fix the problem chain reaction. This year I was finally able to break 80 but my driver was unpredictable with a push slice. Found a pro locally and in my first lesson he gave me one grip change and one drill to work on. 3 weeks later with practice I’ve for the most part eliminated the slice and now have my baby draw back. Don’t waste another season messing about with YT tips, see the pro that can properly analyze the swing
Perfectly stated. STOP WITH THE TH-cam SWING ADVICE! 99.9% of people will misdiagnose their mechanic because no understanding of the chain of events in a golf swing. They’ll find a fix which is wrong for them. Then they will implement it wrong. So the wrong fix for the wrong diagnosis implemented wrong. This is disaster. Then they give up on that tip and find another. The residue of the prior tip is still in their swing. They didn’t video anything. Just going on feel not real. Repeat endlessly. But you now, for some people… they just love the pain.
Though I'll never swing it like you, this was a really important video for me to better understand what my goals with the driver are and what effect slight mishits can have.
He Playa, you need to read some of Hrvey Pennicks books. He said "under and behind" which is of course the exact opposite of our bad swing which is over and in front. I use under and behind all the time as my swing thought.
Under and behind is the kind of phrases that i don’t like. I have no idea what it means no matter how much anyone explains it. I just do what Eric says. Less chance for me to pervert the initial intention of the author.
This is where matty boom boom got his boom boom fixed. Great video! I tell someone at my club about your channel once a week. Never stop never stopping playa.
You just cured my swing woes!!! Been suffering with the bobblehead since I started playing again last year, almost quit due to extremely poor contact. This was what I needed, thanks for sharing your fantastic lesson good sir!!!
Face angle should be about half of what your club path is (+5-8 degrees of face angle and +2.5-4 degrees of club path angle) for a solid baby draw. This is the way.
This video feels so relatable and I'm so glad for it. ✔ Driver doing a banana to the left ✔ Lower right side of the back hurting (I even have some nerve compression day to day I'll occasionally feel in my knee and thighs) ✔ Confidence and fun shattered I know another golfer's issues aren't my issues, but even then that should give me some material to experiment with when the next season rolls around. Thanks playa in chief
16:57 is exactly what my shots looked like today. Going to work on driver today and this video popped up. Great stuff. My shots have been starting off right indoors I hope that translates into a draw at the range. (went to the range to comment about my session. Hit one good 200 yard shot out of 10 rest were bonkers). First month playing though so I will take it.
Thank you so much for this video lesson! This is the exact same issue I struggle with off the tee box. Great iron player with a natural draw swing. I just can’t find a way to avoid hooking left on a consistent basis. 14:58
Elbow pain….same. Especially when I was over the top with the swing. High effort swings. Realized that I had to make changes to keep playing. Love the simple head behind / still thought….simple.
Seriously, This video save me. Went to the range yesterday and was trash, thought I was coming over the top to much. I went today and was hitting them great. The only swing thought was keeping my head back and everything went smoothly. Thanks for the video
Shallowing out the right elbow and wrist is the holy grail of the driver once the fundamentals (stance, grip, balance) are solid. This is because of the length of the club and the extended circumference of the swing plane. The same applies to long irons (2,3,4).
Hi there, a question. At the 1:51 mark where you're hitting on an upslope, what I can't tell from the video is - are you facing the upslope in the address in the position, meaning that it inclines and rises up in front of you? Or is the upslope inclining and facing/rising left (or sideways) during your address position? Because I think if its inclining and rising in front of you, isn't there a better chance of hitting it when you swing?
Eric is great teacher, keeps it simple and repeatable and doesn't let you get too hung up on the numbers. If I ever find myself in Malaysia, I'm looking him up.
Reverse K - perfect cue. Watched the video, used the cue playing ten holes - first time I ever hit 10 Drives in the middle of the fairway. Thank you and Eric so much, this is gold!
Left and lefter…..I’ve got that shot. I also have one that starts left, goes lefter, and then makes a sharp left turn. I went back and looked at some old video I have and my head does indeed move forward…..going to try this fix!
Matt, I have the same exact back issue. I got it first about 5 months ago and it has lingered. I have tried laying off golf, but it is just too tough. Hopefully improving my swing will help me also fix my back issue. The physical therapist called it gluteal tendonitis, which was brought on by my bad swing.
My biggest treat to myself is i go to a doctor here who performs dry needling right into the muscle. She had her needle 7cm into my gluteus minimus the other day. It gets rid of the trigger points. Hurts like hell which i like but immediately relieves the trigger point. Then it’s about stretching it out and strengthening it. So i lunge and squat and stretch. And i try move more with walking and soon will swim.
I used to have the same topple issue...I fixed it by watching long drivers! They begin with a tilt behind the ball...of course, you can still lunge at it on the down swing but setting up tilted will make you aware of the topple on the backswing...it would be such a dramatic move that it's next to impossible. Again, so much of this game is in the setup.
I love seeing this. Just shows the drive to continually want to learn and improve. Plus, driver is really an hugely important club. Sure, you can limp by without it, but it's sorta like eating gluten free chocolate cake.
A European Tour Pro once told me: “Just think a string is pulling you back just under your right shoulder, and then shortly after its pulling you back under your left shoulder.” It is is so simple and it fixes everything at once. Your brain already knows how to do everything and this intention takes care of sequence, low point, speed.. felt like this was a super effective thought. The club at all times is being pulled back. The change of directions sets the wrists automatically, you have tons of lag and it feels effortless and is painless for your back.
Of all aspects of my truly amateur game my driver has been the most frustrating. This video has helped a great deal and at least I feel more confident using it. Thank you.
I have a very similar problem. It comes from being addicted to club head speed and distance. When you know you can crank it, you tend to overdo it, especially in the back swing. Like you, I can hit it pretty hard but my consistency is bad and I don’t score well. I have the same overextension in my swing and I tend to hit it left and bend it left (I’m a lefty). So because I’m long, and also inaccurate, it goes way off line. When I have good days, and I don’t overextend I actually hit it farther and with a little draw. I play only a few times a year so I have a hard time building consistency. This video will help me a lot. Thanks for this.
I too try and video myself while getting numbers from my flightscope. Trying to get path and face to work together is a chore, but that is golf. Keep it up
As someone that’s been going through a period of nasty duck hooks with the longer clubs (I have nasty sky marks the top corner of my 3 wood and hybrid from shutting the face too much on impact) that opening resonated with me
Question, if you lower the loft settings on your driver hosel do you still square the face at address or will you need to play with a slightly open clubface at address?
Schweet Matt, got so much from this. My Sacroiliac joints in my hips scream at me every single day and this vid highlighted something I could be doing!
Absolute gold this Matt. More please mate. Honestly over extension at the top disrupting swing path on a driver are my battles too. Recently I've been really trying to create the room to take it on the inside. The swing feels shorter but the results are better and your video shows the difference.
What's funny watching this is I see some similarities to my issues. I used to be steep and went left, now I go right since I shallowed out my swing. Big issue has been my club face for all clubs at times. There are times I seem to square it up well, and other times I'm pushing it right. Especially with the driver, but I'm more consistent with less push with my irons and wedges on the range lately. Edit: Not saying my issues are like yours. I am saying how it seems like many golfers have similar issues, and it's just minor stuff you have to fix to get it going.
Definitely similar issues in the surface. But the key is to find that root cause. People can often point out what is wrong but have no idea where it starts. And it can start at any point of the swing and differing points for each person. That’s why i like Eric. Just tells me where to focus and change is instant. It was a conceptual problem for me of what the golf swing is supposed to be. I had every idea wrong
Thank you for this bro! I suffer with the exact same pull hook!! And it almost had me quitting golf...so THIS was everything for me...At least I understand better what is happening and what needs to happen to make the adjustments..
Are you going to use what fixed my swing in your swing? I hope not! See a good coach playa in person!

I have not experienced it again after this lesson
You can tell Eric really knows what he's talking about in the way he explains things. Makes concepts very easy to grasp with how he phrases them and examples he uses. Wish I had a coach like that around here, especially because I seem to be struggling with a similar issue! Also do you know what the cause of the pain above your right hip/buttock is? I have experienced the same pain before but it's usually in my lead side hip/buttock
This was an incredible! The way Eric conveys his message is so simple and easy to understand. Thank you for this video!!
Love how this video wasn't just about the fix. The second half about how to play and manage the driver during a round was gold!
It really helps in the long run
Eric is the best! His work with Gen is awesome too.
Eric is the best. He was my valentine.
Man, that coach is incredible. Simple, effective. love it!
Good to see a positive golf lesson bedding in in real time (so to speak).
I am getting a vicarious feel good factor from this and can feel hopes and dreams returning.
Sweet.
What’s dreams do you have playa?
@@GolfSidekick Current HI is 21.3
When qualifier season gets going here in Ireland I intend to be playing off a scoring handicap of 18 by years end (roughly HI of 16.1) and in 2024 I intend to improve to a scoring handicap of 15 (which is what I used to play off before my wilderness years).
Now Matty Boy please don't ask me about my politics and what my hopes and dreams are there or I will be kicked off youtube!!!🤣🤣
Did keeping your head still and not moving it forward, help with all of the aches and pains. Definitely fixed your contact issue. Thanks
Yes. Big time
I get exactly the same pains at times that you described. I saw a pro and discovered i had a reverse pivot. This is the cause of my pain. As Eric said i need to stop tipping and just rotate and not extend to much and just swing easy through the shot. I tend to try and smash the crap out of the shot but seem to do better when swinging freely.
Yas!
Exact same here!!!!
Hey Bro,
big respect to your attitude and to your pro. Going to a good pro is so important! I am working checklists like a Jet Pilot too, with hcp. -22!!! One of the most freeing Driver lessons ever.
Shout out to the shouting caddy too😂😂😂😂
Waiting for the release of the new Shorts at waddaplaya!!!
Glad to see Eric fix you swing with such a simple change. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Glad you enjoy it!
Hey Matt, when you talked about all the swing thoughts going through your head that ultimately ruin your swing, it really resonated with me. I was like, yep, that's me. The difference in your swing and the results made by you just thinking about your head position was huge. I bet you're really happy! Happy grinding!
Still grinding my swing. Going to take my new thoughts to the course this week
I think sometimes having a lesson can make us reignite a spark
Nice playa.
Bobble head be gone!
Face angle should be about half of what your club path is (+5-8 degrees of face angle and +2.5-4 degrees of club path angle) for a solid baby draw. This is the way.
This video feels so relatable and I'm so glad for it.
✔ Driver doing a banana to the left
✔ Lower right side of the back hurting (I even have some nerve compression day to day I'll occasionally feel in my knee and thighs)
✔ Confidence and fun shattered
I know another golfer's issues aren't my issues, but even then that should give me some material to experiment with when the next season rolls around. Thanks playa in chief
Man the changes are unreal. Having no pain is a great feeling
Man that's cool. Eric really makes it so much easier to understand. I really need to find a coach like that here, the search continues!
You can do it!
Thank you so much for this video lesson! This is the exact same issue I struggle with off the tee box. Great iron player with a natural draw swing. I just can’t find a way to avoid hooking left on a consistent basis. 14:58
Glad it helped!
Elbow pain….same. Especially when I was over the top with the swing. High effort swings. Realized that I had to make changes to keep playing. Love the simple head behind / still thought….simple.
Do you use the computer a lot?
Seriously, This video save me. Went to the range yesterday and was trash, thought I was coming over the top to much. I went today and was hitting them great. The only swing thought was keeping my head back and everything went smoothly. Thanks for the video
Right on. Keep grinding away Shawn. It all comes together for the good of humanity at some point
Love this video, having 7 or 8 different swing thoughts etc etc. keep it simple, stay behind it for the driver 👍
What a great teacher. One of the best I've ever seen and I've watched 'em all.
Does he have a teaching channel?
Eric is great teacher, keeps it simple and repeatable and doesn't let you get too hung up on the numbers. If I ever find myself in Malaysia, I'm looking him up.
You bet ya
Reverse K - perfect cue. Watched the video, used the cue playing ten holes - first time I ever hit 10 Drives in the middle of the fairway. Thank you and Eric so much, this is gold!
Nice work!
You have a course with no par threes in ten holes?
Left and lefter…..I’ve got that shot. I also have one that starts left, goes lefter, and then makes a sharp left turn. I went back and looked at some old video I have and my head does indeed move forward…..going to try this fix!
Thank you so much for this vid! I lost my drive this week and this was my problem.
Wow, your issue is exactly what I'm experiencing (I think)... such great information, thank you!!
Thank you. Its always nice to see Eric in a video. We need a video of you two playing some holes :)
Coming soon!
That has to be the most pristine driving range I have ever seen!! Good work mate!
Reignwood. Amazing place.
that pain in the inner elbow is called 'golfer's elbow.' I got it from work loading trucks, and it is noticable when I play golf.
Excellent info from Eric. He is fantastic. Looking forward to try this out myself.
I’m looking forward to working with him more
I love seeing this. Just shows the drive to continually want to learn and improve. Plus, driver is really an hugely important club. Sure, you can limp by without it, but it's sorta like eating gluten free chocolate cake.
Or going to prom with your dad
A European Tour Pro once told me: “Just think a string is pulling you back just under your right shoulder, and then shortly after its pulling you back under your left shoulder.” It is is so simple and it fixes everything at once. Your brain already knows how to do everything and this intention takes care of sequence, low point, speed.. felt like this was a super effective thought. The club at all times is being pulled back. The change of directions sets the wrists automatically, you have tons of lag and it feels effortless and is painless for your back.
Every swing advice funnily enough works for THAT person it worked for. For everyone else, wording, visuals, actions all mean different things.
@@GolfSidekicksooo true
@@Garywhitetrumphobgobbler that made no sense to anyone except You and that’s all that counts if it works
That’s really bad.
Lol
I could listen to these guys talk golf all day long.
Of all aspects of my truly amateur game my driver has been the most frustrating. This video has helped a great deal and at least I feel more confident using it. Thank you.
This is great news playas
Inspirational music. Waddavibe
inspirational corporate rock is all we need
does Eric do these lessons in Thailand still? I am not far from bkk if he is still around. if he does how can i get in contact with him? thanks!
This is so good. The irony for me is, when I think "swing 75%" the ball goes 10% further than when I swing "100%"
Yes sir me exactly the same But so damm hard to stay at 75% and not drop the foot
There is the word: think. Sometimes we over think
I too try and video myself while getting numbers from my flightscope. Trying to get path and face to work together is a chore, but that is golf. Keep it up
Golf is a game of two extremes sometimes.
Wadda great video!!!it really shows the importance of professional feedback
As someone that’s been going through a period of nasty duck hooks with the longer clubs (I have nasty sky marks the top corner of my 3 wood and hybrid from shutting the face too much on impact) that opening resonated with me
ERIC IS THE BEST COACH IVE SEEN!!! DEFINITELY GLAD HES ON THE CHANNEL!
Such a great video, thanks for sharing your experience!
Question, if you lower the loft settings on your driver hosel do you still square the face at address or will you need to play with a slightly open clubface at address?
18.00 - 18.50 was just so satisfying - a real live before and after without meaning it
Yaassss. Beautiful after
Excellent 👍👏 more of these. He’s an amazing teacher 👏👏👏
Schweet Matt, got so much from this. My Sacroiliac joints in my hips scream at me every single day and this vid highlighted something I could be doing!
G8 video Mat it's amazing how many golfers are getting constant back pain from an over exerted swing I'm one of them...
I think it’s a league of people with back ache
This video is special. Such a great coach, well explained - very common problem, I suffer this myself. 👏👏👏
What a great coach! I need a lesson like this
I stepped away in another room and I could hear when you when you hit a good center face . It was a beautiful sound.. Is greatest drive ever hit
It is like music
This what I have really been working on this winter. Almost same exact thing.
Absolute gold this Matt. More please mate. Honestly over extension at the top disrupting swing path on a driver are my battles too. Recently I've been really trying to create the room to take it on the inside. The swing feels shorter but the results are better and your video shows the difference.
Do the Nick Faldo preset.
This is great. Thanks so much for posting this.
@@GolfSidekick 100%. The reason for a push show it is an open club face, but what causes it varies by the golfer.
Also your new drives look amazing!
These videos with Eric are awesome! He seems like a good guy with a great golf IQ.
this was the best video for driver education!! thanks so much!
Any great stretch amd flez exercises and bands to pull that will help.
Thank you for this bro! I suffer with the exact same pull hook!! And it almost had me quitting golf...so THIS was everything for me...At least I understand better what is happening and what needs to happen to make the adjustments..
