A radical last ditch mitigation for the Black Crazy Ants. If they are getting out of control and start moving again, you could make of yourself a predator and grab and remove the queens as they trail to a new nest. The chances of this method allowing you to get them all would be almost nonexistent, and the reduced queens would result in lower colony numbers and potentially allow the native ants to compete on level ground with them.
I +1 taking a harsh intervention approach on the Black Crazy Ants. I'm worried about the long term health of the ecosystem if they're allowed to grow unhindered, especially since the tank isn't as large as a whole real forest.
Hola Mikey! Pantdora is absolutely incredible. We can all tell you've put a lot of love into this and care so deeply about what it means to have balance in an ecosystem. I'd like to clarify what you said about dart frogs. I've kept golden poison frogs in the past. In the wild, this is the species from Colombia known as the most poisonous creature on the planet. However in captivity, it along with other dart frogs are harmless unless you give them their exact diet in the wild. While they do get their poison from ants, the dart frogs wouldn't develop this poison from the black crazy ants. And the great thing about golden poison frogs is how vocal they are! Out of the dart frogs, they are the most vocal! So they're a great addition to any vivarium. In the wild, these frogs are no joke! The golden poison frog produces deadly alkaloid batrachotoxins in their skin glands as a defense against predators. A single frog has enough for ten humans or 20,000 mice. Golden poison frogs are a very important frog to the local indigenous cultures, such as the Emberá and Cofán people in southern Colombia. The frog is the main source of the poison in the darts used by the natives to hunt. The Emberá people carefully expose the frog to the heat of a fire, and the frog exudes small amounts of poisonous fluid. The tips of arrows and darts are soaked in the fluid, and remain deadly for two years or longer.
@@AntsCanada also in captivity you are more than likely more harmful to dart frogs than they are to you, they can breathe through there skin and the oils on your hands can clog their pores and hurt their breathing so its always best to avoid holding them at all unless absolutely necessary but they are great pets I still have mine and its one of the coolest pets I've ever owned.
I have built several no maintenance tanks. I would put some more plants in your pond. More fast growing plants that do well with roots submerged but the foliage grows outside the water. Pothos, Philodendron or Peace Lilly seem to work well. But many other plants like mint or lettuce can also do very well. The duck weed and other similar floating plants also do really well so good to see you put that in. Maybe once your vines send more roots into the water it will be enough. To many animals in the water can quickly overcome the plants uptake of nutrients. If your not trimming plants regularly from the pond, it's probably not enough growth to remove all nutrients. If your not doing water changes, you want to keep an eye on nitrates to make sure the plants are keeping up. A bog filter can work really well and this setup is perfect for a bog filter so you might want to look into that. Anubias grow WAY to slow to help remove nitrates, they look good but really don't do much for nitrate removal. Submerged plants in general don't do much at all.
Your lighting is incredible! From one creator to another I can really appreciate the work you put into this! As well as how often you post. You are a 👑 in the animal niche! 🙌🏻 well done my friend 🤙🏻

This is wild. I had a 100G fresh water aquarium, and i 100% agree with you.. Those things can become a never ending money pit, very fast. And the constant maintenance is insane. Respect for maintaining these monstrous home ecosystems 👌 its not an easy task.
I can't believe that, after watching the past 2 episodes, that I am now sitting here after ending work, anticipating this episode and the ones that come after. I'm not a huge ant guy, but I'm so invested in this story
a few days ago I found a small trapjaw ant colony in my grandma's very tiny front yard I'm in Indonesia with my mom to take care of my grandma and I never thought I would see this cool ants they are sooooo cool
I was a little apprehensive of this giant project, particularly the idea of ants fighting each other. You've alleviated all of that with how complete an ecosystem you are building. It's just absolutely beautiful! I love learning about all the new creatures and plants and substrates and environmental features! Thanks so much for posting these videos and sharing what must be such a dearly held interest and hobby (is hobby too small of a word for the level of commitment you have to these tiny creatures?) with all of us! Thank you! Thank you!
Freshwater clams and muscles are the best natural filters out there, if you want to keep Pandora's water's squeaky clean, then maybe add some of those. I've loved making little ecosystems and that's largely thanks to your channel, so this project is everything I could dream of, would you ever consider adding a vine snake to this vivarium? They are native to Sri Lanka where I grew up, and they are some of the tiniest but coolest little snakes you'll ever see
Unless you can find a predator to specifically target the crazy ants and mostly ignore all the others, then your best bet is probably to just remove them somehow. At this rate they're just going to take over the entire place and you'll have none of the smaller insects left. The only bad thing about most predators you could add, is that they'll eat the other little bugs as well. You need something that would specialize in crazy ants specifically.
I would add a variety of plants to the small pond. Anubias filter directly from the water, but you’ll still need plants that will draw nutrients from the substrate. Dwarf water lilies could work; once they get roots in the substrate, they rapidly grow. Cryptocorynes are also pretty good, but they’re slow growers. Sword plants will send out runners and spread pretty fast.. sometimes. I’m not sure what they’re actually called, but what’s sometimes referred to as betta bulbs are pretty prolific
u could always add some spider plants...they grow anywhere even under water as i had them in one of my tanks and they are pretty incredible cleaners! easy to maintain and u can pull them out when they get larger to put in some small ones again=) if u make a separate tank for filtering u could use spider plants to filter that water too!
Alright bro this is the greatest thing I've seen on youtube in years, I'm so glad I was randomly suggested this channel at 1am on a friday after a boring work shift.

You are a master of biology, and interesting content. Thanks
My predictions I came up with from this episode: 1. Hero arc - tree frogs, will eventually discover the ants , especially if they breed and will balance out the colony size 2. Villian arc- crabs. Crabs are only in the water for easy game for now since theyre local they only know water hunting but wait theyll come out and def be after crickets and other land game 3. Cherry shrimp baby boom coming soon which will make crabs come on land more and probably new menu item for Mantis 4. Praying Mantis massacre to all colonies, BABY CRICKETS and clumsy roaches 5. Lizards and Mantis territory battle 6. Baby grasshopper death finally comes 7. Termites only have a few survivors most will be dead 8. Circus ants and black ants colony war will result in feeding frenzy 9. Guppies will lay eggs 10. Snails will lay eggs 11. Geko or Lizard will eat Mantis

@dabadore. you should start with a simple species of ant like black garden ants and buy a colony with about 20 workers to make the start easier. These are some tips if you ever need them.
This vivarium has reached a point where the lore and storyline will be infinite and never ending. It’s a marvel what nature is, this rainforest can theoretically exist for the rest of time with proper care. The ecosystem will be so vast and rich with so many different types of creatures as more prey insects reproduce and predators multiply. It’s been a treat to witness this tank evolve from the beginning, it sheds so much light on nature that we can see. We walk around in our day to day lives almost always forgetting that outside of human life, there is a world where nature is happening all around us. Being able to see a small slice of that reality in this enclosure is wonderful and incredibly eye opening. We’re able to see some of nature’s greatest moments up close, moments that would almost certainly escape our eyes if we hadn’t stopped to look.
Thank you for bringing attention to the beauty of blackwater aquariums! Over the years I have heard so many people say bad things about the look of blackwater setups, but I have always loved them. They're so much more beneficial for the inhabitants and give such a naturalistic look to a setup. Absolutely underrated in my opinion! Not enough people know the benefits of it or that a lot of the fish in the FW aquarium hobby originate from blackwaters. It really makes a difference!
This is true. My coldwater setup is done as a blackwater river but when people see it they say it needs cleaning as filthy 😢 no, it's just the tannins.

The only logical course of action I can see is for you to remove the stump as safely and efficiently as you can. I had to deal with fire ants in Mississippi. Colonies that are experts at thriving are almost impossible to contain. Don’t let the black crazy ants take over your enclosure! 🙌🏻 Awesome job!!
Yeah remove the stump. And get rid of the fire ants and the black crazy ants and replace it with something else or clear the stump completely and start over,
Noooo! I love that stump. Plus it was SO heavy and hard to move in there. I also fear the bca have satellite nests all around the vivarium with egg-laying queens. 😭
@@AntsCanada I'm on the side that says let the black crazy ants be as they are. If they're thriving, let them thrive, simple as that. They're on of my favorite parts to follow. Such a big colony
The stump is totally awesome, and no doubt was the vector for many unintended species. If you don't want the unintended flora and fauna, you could freeze it before introduction, or re-introduction.
I just want to say every Sunday I look forward to your new video. It’s kind of part of my end of the day routine for Sunday. Epic project. Rainforest systems tend to contain a lot of snails and slugs, so you might want to add some from your area to the land section. Other than Clints specific ant eating recommendations, I would slow down the addition of predators and feeders now for a while, to let the system settle a bit. Of cause, such a vivarium will always require some more additions to be the best it can be, but for the most part, a stable predator-prey relationship should get time to develop in an ecosystem and most of the energy in the system should originate from the plants and then go through herbivores and detrivores to the predators. If you add high numbers of one species of feeders, you boost the numbers of their predators (and if you are unlucky, the crazy ants benefit the most). And that, in return, may than deplete the populations of the less abundant herbivores. Also: If you have the opportunity to do so, without destroying to much other stuff, it might be worth to give the invasive ants a hot water treatment to reduce their populations and number of queens, to give the native ant species an advantage. It would be a pity if the crazy ants, which apparently had a head start, took over the whole vivarium.
I raised dart frogs in my own system for years and in captivity, we don't have the correct insects to have them develop that toxin. So you are safe to introduce them to your system to maintain the ant population.
I'm 23. Been consuming TH-cam since it came out. This is my favorite stand alone series I've watched in memory. Thank you for producing and uploading for free. I appreciate all the work you do.

It's also amazing that you focus on the world not too many people truly focus on or think about. Can't wait to see this vivarium evolve and what other projects you got planned!
As a reef keeper, which is another form of setting up an enclosed ecosystem, I can't wait to see Pantdora a year from now. Edit: Have you considered a refugium for this set-up? If you don't know what a refugium is, look into the reef keeping hobby. But it's basically a separate tank full of plants and critters so you can increase the amount of water in your system and keep the same display size. Plus you have a safe place for breeding fish and such to have babies. Plus the more water you have the more stable your parameters remain, while allowing you to have more filtering plants and algae without cluttering your main display. I use it to complete the ecosystem in my reefs. Copapods breed down there and constantly provide clean up crew and food for my corals and fish. Also, you can remove greedy crabs from your prized animals, while still allowing them to help keep dead animals from decomposing and destroying your water quality. As a freshwater planted aquarist, I think you understand how important stable parameters are.
I’ve been watching this series since it was just a guy in an apartment with his ants to watch this channel grow to such heights and see the video quality get so good i will never stop watching and keeping up with this wonderful channel

True, AC is a part of the ecosystem just like everything else when it comes down to it, even if he makes his involvement gentle.
i was thinking about using a shop vac to suck them up. i know it works for bees, why not ants?
I +1 taking a harsh intervention approach on the Black Crazy Ants. I'm worried about the long term health of the ecosystem if they're allowed to grow unhindered, especially since the tank isn't as large as a whole real forest.
yeah, get a shop vac and suck as many up as possible so they don't dominate the whole ecosystem.
Someone mentioned above that a certain lizard eats ants.
I'm amazed at how you managed to make a discussion about war between ants intriguing
Thanks for watching!🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜
Reminiscent of Thoreau!
Wow!!!

Lmao my thoughts
I agree some pothos growing out of it would be great for the environment and look super jungle-y
I believe he mentioned near the beginning that the pond waterfall runs from a filtered pump through a bio filter.

Facts
Agreed. It's only a matter of time before they kill the other ants. Overwhelm the larger creatures and kill the plants from below

Bag it up Terry! What are you doooooin terrrrryy! 😂
Yrret is terry in reverse
glad i’m not the only one

My predictions I came up with from this episode:
1. Hero arc - tree frogs, will eventually discover the ants , especially if they breed and will balance out the colony size
2. Villian arc- crabs. Crabs are only in the water for easy game for now since theyre local they only know water hunting but wait theyll come out and def be after crickets and other land game
3. Cherry shrimp baby boom coming soon which will make crabs come on land more and probably new menu item for Mantis
4. Praying Mantis massacre to all colonies, BABY CRICKETS and clumsy roaches
5. Lizards and Mantis territory battle
6. Baby grasshopper death finally comes
7. Termites only have a few survivors most will be dead
8. Circus ants and black ants colony war will result in feeding frenzy
9. Guppies will lay eggs
10. Snails will lay eggs
11. Geko or Lizard will eat Mantis
Dude. You single-handedly taught me that Nature isn’t something to be feared for repulsed by. But is something truly spectacular and beautiful. Bravo. PS: I would love to see Vampire Crabs! They are some of my favourite crabs due to their colouration and name!

What about AC killing house geckos by letting them get mauled by ants?
Yeah I would hate to see the crazy ants take over, I would like to see the native colony prevail
Informative, educational AND charming: I learn with each chapter. Thank you.

I love that i can sit down every week and watch new episodes of these different worlds like a tv show, its great.
