Living with Tourettes and ADHD

  • Hey all! In support of Tourettes Awareness Month I wanted to share my experience of living with tourettes and ADHD. Life with tourette syndrome can be very tough and its something I have dealt with for as long as I can remember, there is no known cause for Tourette and there is no known cure either which is why I think its really important for us to bring awareness to this disorder! We do a lot to bring awareness to other mental health subjects such as depression, anxiety, and other so I think bringing awareness and support to Tourette Syndrome is just as vital.
If you would like to support Tourette awareness then please visit: tourette.org/ and either donate to them or use one of their banners or profile picture logos to help spread awareness.

My daughter has adhd and is being evaluated for Tourette’s. Your video is the most helpful I’ve found because her Tics are not as severe as what’s portrayed in other videos.

I just found this video and it was such a huge help. I have mild tourettes too, and never felt like I could find anyone going through it the same way I am. I always felt guilty searching videos or information and seeing such severe cases, and feeling like I didn't relate or that I should feel grateful. But you are the first person I've ever seen with milder tourettes and adhd. I was diagnosed when I was very young but never knew myself until high school. I relate so much to the sniffling and rubbing my nose. Clearing my throat and shaking my leg are also things I know have bothered people in the past. As a young adult I still struggle with finding identity and understanding myself, so thanks again for opening up and sharing.

Thank you for sharing! I recently got diagnosed at 23 but I've been struggling with it since I was 18. The worst for me is when people question that why don't haven't they seen me tic. But I have spent years of finding strategy's to help suppress them or redirect but it takes it out of you and can be so painful! It was nice to be able to have so many things to relate to as I don't know anyone else my age with it as I know it's most common in younger children!

Hey! I'm glad you could relate to it :) I totally get what your saying about people and your tics, I had a guy on here once telling me I didn't have tourettes because I don't show my tics in my videos lol 😅 I also haven't met many people my age with it either so it's awesome that you messaged!

right here with you too! its exhaaaauuuusting! Theres the ADHD, but then the tourrettes is causing me to turn my head and look over my shoulder instead of the computer screen (or task) I'm trying to focus on. so getting work done is so hard. I feel very trapped around people at work and their presence makes me tic a lot more. In contrast, my least triggering situation is when im in the company of beautiful girl! Girls make me feel at ease and im my coolest self! so I guess thats a blessing at least!

    Hi 😊
Thank you for sharing your story 👍🌞
My 13 year old son has Adhd, tourettes, ocd and difficulties with sleeping. It's also very difficult for him. He's struggling every day at home and in school but I know he's doing his best. It's also not easy for his brother, sister, my wife and me. We do our best to help.
Something which makes him happy and calm is his dog🐕😉 that he got for his 13th birthday. He trains twice a week and goes for long walks everyday with her... in all kinds of weather.... here in windy and rainy Denmark 🌧️🇩🇰☔😁.
I wish you All the Best
    Have a nice day
    Best regards, Kenneth

Hey friend! Sounds like you are a great supportive dad!! And I think the dog sounds like it was a great idea too! Having a companion is a great calming distraction I think :) I'm sure he understands that you and your family do your best to help, and if he doesn't he will when he gets a little older, take it from someone who also grew up with tourettes and ADHD :) how bad are his ticks? When I was younger mine were much more aggressive than they are now, but you start learning to cope with them and handle them a bit better.

@@MewithADHD (by mistake I used my sons mail account.... here my reply comes once again😀)
      Hi again Chris
First of all my english is not super.
Thank you a lot. I´m trying - sometimes I succeed and then there´re days and moments where I make mistakes. Yes Indeed his dog, Alberte, is doing so much good for him and our family. Sometimes Alberte she is the best at helping.😊
He has a lot of differents tics:
      this is some of them:
      - noises, screams, cursing, singing/rapping very loud, picks off his eyebrows and eyelashes, he closes doors for like a minute, cracking fingers, washing hands and when gets a friend over they often have to wash their hands too (especially if they have to play Play Station), he also has mouth, teeth and eye tics......
He used to play in a footballclub and once in a match as a midfielder he was dribling with the ball. Suddenly he stopped dribling because he had to turn his neck to the left a couple of times🙈. The opponent took the ball from him, the trainer and me yelling "no no not now" - but he managed to run back (never seen him run so fast😆) getting the ball back , dribling back towards the opponents goal and making an assist 👍 . He was quite good at football but he stopped. Now his focus is dogtraining 👌🐕. I´m so proud of my son 😉😊

how i describe tics is like blinking. you’ll blink all day without giving it a thought just like our tics. it’s a natural subconscious reaction. but if you try to resist blinking, it is very difficult and uncomfortable, and eventually you will have to blink and blink more and harder. thank you for spreading awareness of this exhausting disorder that is very misunderstood. One of the most annoying things also is when you get better at suppressing and hiding your tics, no one believes you even have tourette’s when you are living it 24/7. Makes living with it very isolating and lonely

I distinctly remember it coming on when I was in around 2nd or 3rd grade after I was stung wasp at "The Boys and Girls Club." My symptoms slowly started after about a week, and my brothers were telling be to stop jerking by neck around and making random sounds. I was in the car when it happened and I told them "I can't stop it!" and they said "yes you can!" It was then that my mom told me that I had tourettes and of course I had no idea what the heck it even was, led alone what a disorder was. Ever since I turned 18 however, I applied to received a medical card to get cannabis to treat it, and it certainly helps a ton! Now I rarely tic, unless I'm off of it for a few days, then the symptoms will slowly return. I also have ADHD, as there is an 80% comorbidity rate for the two disorders, but honestly I feel it has made me a better musical/visual artist by making me less social and providing intense focus on certain tasks.

    • @random-lz8dl
      @random-lz8dl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I know this is like 11 months late, but, what was the process you had to go through to get a medical card? I'm just curious because I turned 18 earlier this year and I have looked into the process a little bit for my state and I know I am eligible because of my Tourette's. But I'm curious as to what the process might be like for getting a medical marijuana card as for the longest time my Tourette's hasn't inconvenienced me at all until recently. It has begun to cause me some pain in some areas depending on how much I tic and in what areas I'm ticking.

I was diagnosed with tourette's at 6, but never treated, to my knowledge. I didn't realize I had anything more than ADHD till my dad told me this weekend when he told my tics are way worse than before. I have the same stiffle tic as you. My fiance hates me for it, and won't be around me when it's bad. Any time I'm stressed, it fairs up badly. People on the bus will do it to mess with me. Every time I hear a sniffle, it will trigger me. This get exploited with people doing it to make me do it and laughing. It would've been a little less bad if I knew that's why. Anyway. Ty 4 the video. My recent discovery of my diagnosis as a child and recent issues with tics made me want to research the topic.

I don't have Tourettes, but now I have a much better understanding of how it is like just listening to you. I looked up Tourettes be it videos of other people who have it and they had extreme motor responses like when one with such symptoms is sitting in the passenger side of the car and they would just quickly grab the wheel and turn it for a hot second then let go. Or they would honk the horn. It never explained much of anything about it though so I had to guess that this is part of what happens to these people. But now listening to this I finally have a much better grasp about it. When I first met you getting the Nintendo Switch that morning, I never noticed you making any of those movement or vocal symptoms with your Tourettes. You just seemed all natural and fluent with your emotions to me when you moved. I wouldn't worry about the throat clearing too much though, everybody does it and needs to from time to time. I really don't think anyone will make an issue of that. Like they might think you have something caught in your throat or something.
As for you being sick, I hope you get better soon. Also Happy Early Birthday! I hope your 30th turns out great. I had my 30th just last month on the 27th and I still feel younger than my age! Also Happy Mothers Day to all of your family members who are mothers today and years before!
I hope your day is a great one regardless of being sick!

I've got an eight year old daughter with tourettes and adhd. It breaks my heart when her tics get really bad - appearing strongly when she's nervous or feels under pressure, and with excitement.. The only thing I can think to do is to hold her hand (which helps most of all - something that started at infancy), or to take a moment deep breathing with her to help calm the tics (like a mini meditation).. It hurts when other kids point them out because she doesn't even realize she's doing them.. I would appreciate any advise from parents of children with tourettes, or from people with tics themselves or whom have siblings that have them (etc..) that I can do to help "control" (lessen the effect of) tics ! Thank you !

This video made me realize more so to myself that other people understand and that I’m not making excuses. I’ve grown up with adhd ocd tourettes and anxiety my whole life. I’ve learned to minimize my tics like you do and try to blend it in with natural movements. I just have motor tics but my dr are trying to help my adhd and they can’t find any medication to treat my adhd without my tics getting worse. The one thing I hate and makes me angry is when people compare, like you’re not living in a 3rd world country or you haven’t lost people in your life or what not. I just want people to be understanding and not be quick to judge and compare to other problems. I can’t even drive due to my disorders. I have never drank or resorted to drugs. I’ve had to deal with this my whole life head on. It’s hard for me to go out and do things alone because I feel like I’m being watched or looked at weird. I really hope more people watch your videos because you’re on point with everything you say. Sorry for this long explanation but that’s how passionate about it I am with tourettes.

Me with ADHD it is really hard for me to hold a full time job. I feel very drained or overwhelmed if I do. I was fulltime when I was younger but now that I’m 31 it takes its toll on me now. I start to feel different from most adults but whenever I work I put in 110%. I take a lot of medications. Does adhd and medications make it hard for people with adhd and tourettes for work? I’ve also been working retail for 13 years which I want to move on from

I'm surprised your doctor put you on Adderall because stimulants bring out ticks in tourette's . Both of my kids have both and our tourette's doctor took both of them off of Adderall and put them on a non stimulant adhd med and the difference in their ticks is huge. Although the Adderall was big for them on concentration so now they are struggling in school . Its a lose lose situation

There is proof though that Tourette’s is purely genetic and environmentally instigated. Comorbid with adhd and others mainly.
ADHD on the other hand, comorbid ALL the broad spectrum tick disorders, adhd is always just adhd, with comorbid at times but never consistent or real, just ruminations.
Tourette’s is hard to diagnose, especially while comorbid with adhd and anxiety.
You would not be able to sit here and make this video if you had Tourette’s syndrome, I have Tourette’s syndrome.
This is a psychosis fueled rant that obviously didn’t stick and you are obviously over your symptoms.

    • @MewithADHD
      @MewithADHD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Sorry but that's simply not true... if you have tourette syndrome don't you think it's a little bit inconsiderate of you to go around claiming that other people are lying about it? My tics are very apparent to the people I spend my days with, i just cut them out of my videos because i believe it would be distracting to have me clearing my throat or jerkingnmy neck every few seconds. After 30 years of dealing with it I have also learnt to manage my symptoms to hide them as best I can. Plenty of people with tourette's make content on youtube, tic tock, and other platforms so I dont really see your point here sorry...
