A TEENAGER suffers from Tourettes so badly that she has been accused of faking it. Nicole, 14 was diagnosed with Tourettes aged 13 after her mum, Jodie noticed her face and hand tics had developed seemingly overnight. Her vocal tics developed quickly too, and consist of swearing, screaming and whistling, as well as physical arm movements. In moments of extreme emotions, Nicole can sometimes be violent towards herself, scratching and hitting her head. She explained to Truly: “There are moments where you can be really scared, because you don’t know what’s going to happen, or when it’s going to happen.” Nicole also has FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) which means her arms and feet can sometimes lock if her tics get too overwhelming. Despite her diagnosis, a lot of people have accused Nicole of making up her tics for attention, including close family members, and online commenters.

Unfortunately there’s a growing amount of teens on TikTok who think it’s quirky to fake tics. It’s pathetic and half of the blame should be put on them, it’s becoming a problem. In fact faking disorders in general is becoming a real problem on social media platforms in general

I'm so thankful to these kind of videos, I didn't knew anything about Tourettes before watching a tv show with a person affected by it and then I got more interested in it and kept me informed through internet and I'm happy people's speaking about it and normalizing it... I've got a couple of friends with tics (not Tourettes though) and I think it's because of these videos that the first time I met them I recognised they were just having tics and everything was okay since they were not hurting themselves, just a bit "noisy", and I just need to give them their time, not finishing their words or watching them weirdly and well, I just think that awareness is important for people affected and for people around them, thank you for sharing your stories with us.

It’s really sad thinking that people are saying that she’s faking it. Especially with a bunch of people actually faking Tourettes and other disorders like autism, ADHD, depression, ect. To be quirky and different than others and doing so by essentially making a trend out of real things that people struggle with. There actually are compilation videos of people faking things for attention, like “Oh listen to this you may have ADHD 😳😳😳” as a person with actual ADHD the reactions to it are awful like ADHD does not mean that you have a seizure when you listen to a song that gets louder, it’s not a quirky trend that is just kicks and giggles. If you’re reading this don’t fake things for views you’re not “cute” “quirky” “different” you’re just someone who wants attention and to be different so if you want to stand out please don’t fake things to get the attention, you could always do good and get positive attention through good and honest ways. And to anyone who’s reading this have a nice day ☺️💖

Because of all the fake disorders that people create for attention, I no longer believe people in real life when they say they have ADHD, depression, OCD, or really anything else. How do I know they’re telling the truth? Especially if they say it in the middle of a class discussion with the professor and entire rest of the class listening in. Like they probably just want sympathy so they’ll get help and extra points on assignments, because poor them, their “disorder” causes them to turn in bad homework. I feel like if I believe them and give them a shoulder to lean on and support, then I’ll be the dummy in the end when it comes out that they were faking and I was sucked into the lie and gave them all the attention they wanted. I don’t openly accuse people of faking haha, I just assume in my head that they are lying and stop associating with them so much.

I have bad anxiety and I do think some people believe I'm faking. I'm not faking at all but my mom doesn't bother taking me to the doctors and actually find out what's wrong but sometimes in movies when music goes from quiet to loud i freak out and have an anxiety attack. Most of the time I randomly can't focus which causes an anxiety attack. I also have times where I have to touch everything around me I can't help it I just have to. So it makes life really hard and it looks like I'm faking cause my mom doesn't bother with diagnostic therapist of course she has no mental health disorders.
I also have random moments where my full body shakes and my mind goes blank. It's like I got out reality for 2 seconds.

Watching Nicole and other people who have Tourette’s has made me more confident and not feel so alone
Personally I have never posted anything on my Tourette’s for the exact reason I’m too scared to deal with others so when I see others do so I think it’s so amazing I hope one day in the future this disorder along with others will be taken seriously instead of mocked

One thing I’ve realised having friends with Tourette’s syndrome is that it can be triggered or amplified by stress. Some days are quiet enough where you can cope with minimal interruptions and other days are so overwhelming you just want it to end. We all have good and bad days. Although there is no cure, you can take medication, go to therapy, or spend more time doing hobbies you enjoy to take your mind off of the stress causing your tics to amplify.

  • @Auric-BraiNerd
    @Auric-BraiNerd ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm a child neurologist. I study and diagnose people with tics all the time and I'm really glad that people like you exist for them to feel less alone and to hear your strategies for dealing with it.
We have seen a huge transformation recently in who is getting tics. It used to be an illness mostly of young school-aged boys and more recently it's been associated with teenage girls quite a bit more.
I'm sorry people have doubted you or called into question your experience. There is a fundamental misunderstanding of what functional illnesses are. Functional does not mean there's nothing wrong with you It just means that luckily the anatomy of your brain looks okay to most of our modalities that look at anatomy but clearly there is a disconnect between structure and function Where it's not working correctly despite looking okay to our best tools available today. A) that doesn't mean we won't discover more tomorrow to explain it but B) even if the wiring really is totally fine It doesn't mean that the software can't have some issues.
FND is often the body's response to a stress via a network that is connected in a way that it shouldn't be (the brain shutting down walking in a time of stress makes no sense but that's what happens to people sometimes. It's like butterflys in the stomach when going on stage. Why should your stomach hurt from anxiety? That makes no sense but we all accept that as common.) Tics are sometimes similar. They are a feeling deep down that you need to do this thing otherwise something bad will happen or the pressure will build until you pop (like your awesome shaken soda analogy 😊). Why should yelling or moving your arm or scratching yourself relieve that pressure? Idk it just ... DOES and you're just doing your best to cope with that impulse and you're doing it with grace. I'm glad you found that dance can distract you from the urges and lessen your tics. That's wonderful and I wish all my patients would have the insight into themselves to find something that works for them.
"Tick tock tics" is what we call a sociogenic illness people see ticks from an influencer and end up doing similar movements themselves. It's not on purpose it's not malicious it's not an attempt to gain popularity It's just a quirk of our amazing brains having mirror neurons that respond to the behaviors of others in this way. Mirror neurons are potentially why we can catch a yawn , Or perhaps why seeing someone else vomiting makes us want to vomit. They are why watching someone else dance even without trying to learn can still improve your own dancing, Your own edge can be improved by watching someone else scratch theirs, perhaps most interestingly or useful is that there's some research to show that simply watching someone else breastfeeding can increase the milk output of the person watching! The brain is an amazing organ and it is incredibly complex and in that is beautiful but it is also fragile and one of the ways that you can break down is by copying what it sees. Young women are more empathetic and there are ideas that perhaps they are more likely to have more robust mirror neuron responses and are therefor more prone to syncing up with others who have tics.
Anyway, I'm not saying this at all too worry anyone or invalidate your experience. I just say this because the word tick tock tick has been weaponized to tell people that they are " faking it" when it's really not their fault at all. Our brains just DO THAT. Someone who yawns because someone else yawned also isn't faking the yawn.
I of course know nothing about your case and there may have been the number of other factors at play (some sort of injury, birth related difficulty etc but whatever the circumstances, I think you are exceedingly brave strong and once again really helping people out there feel less alone and helping people understand ticks as much more than just the cursing disease. I wish you much luck and the reassurance that ticks do tend to get less significant over time. People find more subtle outlets for their pent up energy that leads to the tics and off in the urge gets less significant over time as well. Keep up the good work and keep laughing because at the end of the day the things you're doing and saying are pretty silly (though still potentially quite painful and disruptive/debilitating). You're a fighter, you got this 👏

As a channel that posts so much about people with disabilities, it would be really nice if these videos were more accessible... I just tried watching this with the subtitles and they're SO bad. It doesn't cost much at all to have someone write captions for videos. I'm not deaf/hoh but I know so many people who are, and this video would be completely unintelligible if you needed to rely on the captions exclusively. "Tourettes" is literally "dress" at one point in the captions, and some of the dialogue isn't captioned at all... Please do better!

i used to have severe tourette’s when i was in 4-6th grade, it started to die down in 7th grade. and i’ve grown out of it by now. people often like to accuse me of faking tourette’s, when i never did. people can grow out of it! i’ve had rumors spread about me at school, i’ve been bullied online, i’ve been made fun of. all the things. it’s honestly unfair, i’ve lived with this since forever, and now that i’m finally better people just want to assume. here’s a tip, unless you’re their doctor, mother, or them yourself, don’t assume they’re faking their tics because you really never know. it’s truly impacted my life negatively because of what people have said to me. they called me a liar, a faker, and much more that i can’t say on youtube. it’s honestly unfair because i can’t do anything about it. if i try to come out and explain my issue, people will think i’m doing it for attention. stop assuming. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

i also have adhd, if i go around saying i have adhd it’s not because i’m trying to get attention. i’ve been diagnosed. i just simply want people to know my conditions so they can feel more comfortable with me and my flaws, and to let them know i’m not going to judge them for theirs. people like to just go straight to “attention seeking” and “faking”, but i’m really trying to make something good out of a bad situation. these kinds of things aren’t something we should be ashamed of because we simply can’t help it, instead of shaming people who come out and let everyone know, support them!

I think with the main problem with the whole “You’re faking it” situation is that some people are too quick to assume that everyone with Tourettes or some kind of tick disorder is faking it for attention. Its clear who the people that are being honest are, since faking something like Tourettes is hella difficult to do accurately. But instead of trying to call all the fakers out and give them more attention, we should just not encourage this toxic mindset that *everyone* with Tourettes is being dishonest. Its very harmful.

I agree 100 per cent. Everybody is talking about the fakers and how they harm people who actually do have tics.
I wish the people who accuse anyone with tics of faking were held responsible for being ableist and making assumptions. The fact a small number of people fake it is no excuse. These people are more harmful than the fakers they keep going on about yet they think they on the moral high ground

As someone who has a very mild case of Tourette’s, she is most definitely not faking. I luckily can hide most of mine from friends & family & work, but most of my tics are in my face / head. I pray for this girl 💕

And I've been accused of faking my epilepsy I've noticed a lot of people in this world just thinks everybody fakes disorders but faking a disorder is also a trend so it sucks for people who really do have those issues

I understand totally where you’re coming from, because when I have twitches and when I’m about to have a seizure or panic attack it’s scary so I feel you

I'm 16 years old, I don't have Tourette's disorder but I was diagnosed with anxiety & asd at 14&15 and knowing neurological disabilities/disorders are being more recognised and accepted is so warming, I sometimes have the odd anxiety tic if I'm in a busy public place feeling extremely overwhelmed like my heads gonna fly off and some people do stare if I tic and fall into a meltdown but knowing people are becoming more familiar and respectful over these disabilities really boosts my confidence.

My older daughter has Tourette’s and the worst part is the loneliness and isolation many feel. Also, My middle daughter has a friend with Tourette’s and she’s and older daughter both have lost some friends because of their condition. The friend with Tourette’s ended up going to an online school and schooling from home. It’s awful. Covid has dramatically increased Tourette’s diagnosis because it’s underlying problem are anxiety, depression, ADD, etc. Thank you for bringing awareness. Parents please talk to your kids about classmates, or friends they might have with any disabilities.
