Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Tourette Syndrome in the Classroom

Ellen Meyers, M.S., M.Ed., Tourette Association Education Committee Member talks about how ADHD impacts a significant number of students with Tourette Syndrome and how it can have a major impact on a child's academic performance. Strategies are discussed to assist students with this common related disorder in this clip taken from the DVD, "Tourette Syndrome in the Classroom, School and Community," available through the Tourette Association.

Her explanation of how exhausting a school day can be with ADHD and then being forced to do work once getting home can be extremely stressful and hard to do (or work on for hours and give up when it's and hour past what time your supposed to go to bed). I can't count how many times I've said "I forgot" instead of explaining that no matter how hard I tried couldn't sit or focus long enough, I didn't have enough mental power left from school to do my work, but I tried! and instead I worked on the same paper for 2 hours when the teacher said it would take "about a half-hour" and still have 1or 2 problems left causing a mental breakdown because I still had 4 other classes of homework to do and not get any of it done. It feels like this lady really knows what she's talking about and it made me really happy to hear that she had sympathy without making it seam like I was a burden or a problem to be fixed. More people need to understand ADHD like she does, school wouldn't be so hard if they were
