If I were to guess, it's because they're conditioned to the point that the presence of humans is associated with easy food (the chum used to attract them to those cage divers)

We lived in Gautier Mississippi so i went deep sea fishing as a kid. Seen all types off fish, sharks, dolphins were my favorite. I seen a few huge sharks. Idk what kind they were.
Shark scientist and biologist say otherwise. I’ll chose to believe them over some random youTube commenters. If they were preying on us they wouldn’t leave any of us to bleed out, or leave anything at all. Whole body would be gone. Plus they only eat once a month and need a high fat content. Humans just don’t cut it. Not worth even swallowing us.
QUEENBEE200384 Do the words SEEMS LIKE and MAYBE sound like I was writing a documentary here? It was just a hypothesis. Switch to decaf and breath in then out a little more. Try to ...... never mind!
In my opinion cage diving is viewed in a completely different way by the sharks. With their senses they are picking up the fish chump scent which is then pulled right up close to the cage where they are then getting a human shape visual,so the sharks link those two senses together = food or prey! In other words for people it's excitement and an adrenaline rush getting in the cage to see Great Whites! But for the sharks it's like they smell like our food so must be a new variety on the menu.... So attacks increase! You only have to look at it from a different point of view and it's clear as a bell! Same goes for fishermen sharks see humans as a fish attraction again, chum bags used to attract fish to catch in the fisherman's point of view. But again the sharks point of view is human = food/prey! Chum scent/human shape!
You know when I read the comments about the dubstep with the sharks I thought it would be a long bass drop here and there, not a full Skrillex concert! 😆
I'm from Sweden, but if I was told "there are great whites here", I would probably stay on land.. I wouldn't feel the need to go into the water. But that's me, I don't know how the brain is wired in other people but staying on land around these waters feels fairly logical to me.
Im from Perth in WA, and most of the time if you dont go out to deep you'll be fine. in my entire short life i've only seen one shark, and that was while surfing.
I see your point but a huge part of their culture revolves around ocean activities. Surfing for example. The problem is complex and not a simple fix but having grown up near the Atlantic, I don't go in the ocean anymore. I miss it but I stick to swimming pools now 😉✌
I'm from WA and we don't do cage dives here. So that reason is irrelevant. Over fishing and the fact great whites are an endangered specie, meaning that can't be killed by the public, are the 2 main reasons.
This may sound like a stupid question, but could Western Australia's population growth simply be a reason for the increase in shark attacks? (IE more people swimming=more shark attacks) The mining boom hat started in the 2000s probably prompted a population explosion, especially around Perth. EDIT: Population was 1.8m in 2000, now around 2..7m. So about 50% growth.
The 2018 worldwide total of unprovoked shark attacks was significantly lower than average. The worldwide total of 66 confirmed, unprovoked cases was lower than the most recent five-year (2013-2017) average of 84 incidents annually. Of the 66 confirmed attacks, 4 were fatal. Australia’s 2018 total of 20 unprovoked incidents was slightly higher than the recent five-year annual average of 14 incidents for the region. Nine attacks occurred in New South Wales, eight in Western Australia, two in Queensland and a single case in Victoria. One attack resulted in a fatality in Queensland.
Its because they've been protected now in Australia for 20yrs. Before then every commercial fishing boat along Southern Australia from Tasmania to Perth would catch them at any given opportunity for teeth or a nice set of jaws. A LOT were caught back then. Of course the numbers have grown now that they've pretty much been left alone.
What I still don’t get is the fact that people still go bathing at a beach that has known shark attacks. Why? What am I missing about the whole beach thing.
I am from Ireland and have travelled to perth 4 or 5 times and this is why I never go into the water there . Water may be cold here but no big sharks .
Why does it always have to be that the sharks have changed?? Seriously, if you keep putting food in their water they ARE going to eat it, if humans want less shark attacks/deaths caused by attacks, just stay out of their water, if they continue to do so, then no crying about it later on, just my personal opinion, 😀

You can't stop the inevitable, sharks will continue to attack as long as there are people in the water, you swim in their domain and therefore are risking your own life
Surfer Nathan Berch knew there were 2 attacks in 1 day recently on that beach. He said " its natural when the waves are right to want to surf". Where is the disconnect to common since. He didn't get bit, but how can u b surprised that u had a run in with an aggressive shark.?
Have read about a hundred comments and only one mentioned something that could be the biggest reason. I mean of course cage diving is stupid and shouldn't be legal. But also what if we just stopped over fishing and only took what we needed, or even stopped commercial fishing altogether, I feel like if sharks had more food in their ocean they wouldn't be forced to change their diet. They are evolving because they are starving in the long term... If a species was eating all our food wouldn't we want to start eating them if they're there all the time? And plentiful? Killing two birds with one stone those sharks are quite clever, change diet and adapt to what's available, also take out the competition so they can have back the prey they really want, fish. 😓
Just a theory, but given the emerging intelligence of sharks, perhaps decades of chumming the waters for them whether for recreational or scientific purposes has been done so often that some of the sharks have caught on? Equating boats and humans with feeding. Pavlov's dog.... can't keep ringing the supper bell all over the world's oceans and expect sharks to know which time isn't for eating.
Yep, people are just plain stupid. If I were the government, I would pass law for more human to go in the water to get ATE. You can't blame the sharks.
