I live here. The ocean isn’t a “park” it’s a wilderness and when you go into it you may or may not be safe. People need to remember this fact at their peril.

well most of the seals are in La Jolla- some in Blacks. I've never seen a single seal north of Blacks and Solana is a good 20 minute drive north.
But there were Juvenille great whites spotted in Del Mar a week ago (between blacks and Solana), but the guy said he didn't see any north of 15th street cuz south of it are reefs. More marine life lives closer to the reefs. I looked it up and Solana has a reef in the north part away from shore. My best guess was that these swimmers swam from Fletchers Cove north and away from shore and towards the reef.
My point is, there is a way to be safer in the water but I mean, its always a risk I guess. The lesson seems to be, don't swim near the reefs.

I live here and surf/dive here in La Jolla Shores frequently. I know everyday that I enter the water I am going into a habitat that supports many different types of marine life. Every person who respectfully swims in the ocean should understand this, and many locals do. I'm very sorry for the loss of human life, but we all understand the circumstances. While this incident is incredibly rare, please do not demonize sharks for doing what is completely natural or develop a fear of them. I am more afraid of getting in a car and going on the freeway. Humans are reckless and unpredictable.

Sharks are the oceans cleaners. Most sharks feed on dead carcasses. Portraying them as mindless eating machines is incorrect. Majority of the time they are extremely discerning of their meal choice. Moreover, most shark encounters do not end in an attack, and even fewer end in predation. I understand attacks attract the most interest, but it is also making the shark a unnecessary villain.

Great White's have exceptional color contrast vision, and that box is sea through so.... He was just daring it to bite with that thing. I've surfed the Cali coastline all My life. There are no safety measures you can take from a shark attack. You swim in the ocean, this is the risk you take. There is nothing you can do to prevent a shark attack while your in the water. They have poor eyesight and are their simply looking for a meal. You can't surf safe anymore than you an surf unsafe. If a shark wants to see if your a meal, he must bite you to find out. He's not going to stop and ask if your practicing safety haha.

The stretch of ocean and beaches between Stradbroke Island and Ballina (SE Qld and NE NSW in Australia) is chock a block with sharks, mostly Bulls, Tigers, and Great Whites. The Govt has the Gold Coast beaches netted, but they're useless for sharks, and dangerous to other fish and mammals. My point being, if you swim/surf/whatever around here, you're taking a big chance. But the state does love it's tourism dollars...

@@as19J01 The shark DID attack. That's what they do. They attack their prey. No doubt it was a case of mistaken identity and it meant to attack a seal instead of a human but make no mistake, he was attacked and would have been eaten if the shark thought he tasted good. Being a human, it didn't taste like prey so he abandoned the attack. Nonetheless the shark attacked him nonetheless.
at·tack - an aggressive and violent action against a person or place.
As you can see, the shark took an "aggressive and violent action" towards a person. It didn't INTEND to, but they have very, very poor eyesight. INTEND has nothing to do with being attacked.
The definition of attack, doesn't state that it has to be purposeful or not. It simply is.

It's only a supremacist mindset that we focus on the attack towards us, rather than our attack on them. Regardless, "attack" is very appropriate, either direction because that's exactly what it is, with our "attack" on sharks being far more grotesque, because we actually INTEND to attack, just as we collectively "attack" mother earth herself at an alarming rate, not just sharks.

There are mostly juvenile great whites in San Diego and they honestly do not even mess with surfers or swimmers. They are hunting for sting rays. MalibuArtist on utube flies his drone all the time, and time and time again the people don’t see the shark and they definitely dont attack. Their behavior seems to be pretty predictable which is a huge relief. Try not to go where there is a drop off because that’s the main place people get attacked in general.
