the broken main courses could have been boiled in a pot and still good. stir in a bit of the pork fat while cooking them for extra piece of mind and flavor while boiling to kill bacteria.

  • @BTemple

That can of pork fat is what we would call "fat-back pork" here, it's used in a lot of traditional cooking. We usually cut it into cubes and pan fry it down until it's rendered and you have crunchy pieces left as well.

"Bacon fat without the bacon" is also known as fatback, and that's kind of a staple in the south. Hardly a scary thing to avoid, actually, you just want to heat it up over the hexamine stove with some salt and pepper. Good calories, it'll warm you up on a cold rainy night.

Wow, what a tragedy! I'd be REAL upset if I got one with not one, but TWO broken mains! That's the problem with Russian MREs. They are not built for punishment. I've seen quite a few reviews of these where one or more components were broken open. The packages are designed to be lightweight and compact, not strong. US MREs are literally designed to be thrown out of a plane onto dirt from a height of 150 feet! Or parachuted down at any height. I have never had a US MRE with a broken component. Luckily, the two Russian MREs I have gotten were not broken, even though the outer boxes were pretty crushed, nothing broke inside. I found that the bacon fat was delicious on crackers! You are supposed to cook with it, but it can be eaten straight. The apple jam was just super sweet. It was like candy. Go to the store and buy a jar of apple butter and add a pound of sugar and there is Russian apple jam! The pate tasted just like liverwurst, but wasn't as good as say, Boar's Head brand.

  • @zhaneranger

The Sausage Meat is probably not a Pate? Here in England we have Sausage Meat and it is a slicing meat like Chopped Ham or Polony, We tend to indicate what sort of meat it was made of as Sausages can be made with any meat. So we would probably say Pork Pate. I say Pork as here in England our normal Breakfast Sausages are made from Pork and you said it reminded you of a Breakfast Sausage? When this was made they would have used tins and fat to help it to keep longer. Also Pate tends to not be surrounded by fat but filled the container and maybe a layer of Fat or Jelly laid on top. The Pate you did have had neither? I think the same as you about the tinned Fat as I wouldn't eat it however fresh it was great if you found something to fry like locally sourced Bacon, Eggs or Potatoes which we used to do when on exercises.

I'm trying to get my head around why every Russian mre has adopted the tin of fat. I guess they would like you said use it for cooking but these are mres. They are ready to go just heat them. The fat makes no sense unless being in a harsh cold place they need it to keep warm. Eskimos eat chunks and rendered seal fat. Also whale blubber. They explain that on such a high protein lean diet in cold months that they can't process and absorb food energy wo the extra fat. I'm going to see it this way bc it makes no sense otherwise. I just ordered 2 dif Russian ones and both listed the tin of fat. I was hoping you could explain it but cooking with it makes no sense with an mre. Not to mention the mains and half the pates and spreads are very greasy already
