    My family made these, in our basement!!
    See my Facebook post on this today: Throwback to winters/blizzards past on this current -25 degree day -- Compelled by a story of a Minnesota family caught off-guard by a blizzard years ago (they sadly did not survive), my family (the Russells) and our friends (the Dundases) started a small business, Dun Rus company, making blizzard survival kits for your car.
    I found this on TH-cam today. The kit does not have a 40-year shelf life, but is full of love and care for potentially stranded families at the time.
    We set up shop in our basement and were paid by the piece to operate the assembly line, complete with bending the wire for the burner, and running the shrink wrap machine. With this kit, you could melt snow, make soup and coffee, eat lemon drops for energy, and stay warm with the reflective blanket. Complete with a red flag to put on your antenna so your car could be seen for rescue.

    The wire goes inside the candle, not outside. And the red plastic flag was tied on antenna. Back in the day.

    I carry in my car a lighter and two cans of Sterno along with blankets, winter boots, gloves, scarfs and hats. Also a container to relief yourselves in. (don't want to stand outside in a blizzard trying to relief the bladder) Granola bars and any medicine that would be needed. I was stranded in a blizzard in 1984 and I was not prepared at all.

    Survival kits are a good and smart idea, I have one along with a bug out bag with fire starting, shelter, first aid, fishing along with extra knives. Many of the articles have more than one use, this kit was not the greatest lol, but still very interesting to see an early attempt at a kit.

    Interesting review Nathan.
    Best bet - make your own
    kit that suits your needs and
    keep it up to date and fresh.
    Thanks for your time & effort
    posting all your videos.

    It was definitely a weird old kit, back then it was necessary, people didn’t have cellphones so if you were caught in a winter storm broken down or stuck this was probably a good thing to have, and it would aid you until help arrived, or the storm passed. It looks like it’s from the 70’s though, they made a lot of quirky things like this in the 70’s.

      Diesel Power
      Exactly, back then you would most likely be on your own unless you had a CB radio, which quite a few people did, then you'd call on CH 9 the emergency frequency that many police and sheriff's depts monitored for help if not a private individual would often monitor and call the police for you. They even had an organization called REACT.

    It amazes me what passed as a "survival kit" in the past. I wonder if we will look back on out modern stuff with the disdain we have for this old stuff 40 years from now.

  • @kitsychan

    the red plastic thing. Your supposed to tie to the radio Antenna, mount on a stick ontop of your car or hang out the road size window. Its supposed to let police know the vehicle is occupied and in distress.

    as a minnesotan i can tell you i remember seeing while not this particular kit ones a lot like to going for like 20 bucks in small town hardware stores for the idiot campers who are worried about bad weather my favorite kit like this comes in a 8 ounce can with a pull tab and actually has decent stuff in it

  • @mordeys
    @mordeys 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I remember them, well not just like them. Seems like the ones we always saw were in green (tackle box green) or blue. There was usually a guy selling these and other stuff like it at flea markets. And they had them at privately owned gas stations.

  • @fixman88

    When I first saw the thumbnail I thought it was a set of tire chains or something (they come in boxes like that). Those lemon drops look like a smaller version of the generic ones that I remember eating as a kid and are still made to this day. Some types of hard candy can have a very long shelf life but I wouldn't trust those since the container was compromised. That candle looks like it's seen too many summers in a car trunk and those Cup of Soup pouches look like something Steve1989 wouldn't even touch!
    As for the date, I saw 1978 on the bottom of the instruction manual. That kit is so ancient that the Atari Video Computer System (2600) was brand-new at the time!

  • @KahlestEnoch
    @KahlestEnoch 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow that is cool never heard of those before. Ahh the joys of getting a ration from before they were concerned about contamination and not sealing it in plastic. Bugs!! extra protein LOL no thank you. Well at least you got to document the kit, nothing edible and you got a weird candle out of the deal and an old crusty space blanket LOL.

    Something like this would need a summer and winter variety. Items that can handle heat and items that can handle cold. Kits that require period monthly inspections. I’m looking to build a kit for my car that has water in a heather thermos or something to prevent freezing. Regularly swapping out food items. That sort of thing.

    • @paullarzazs9601
      @paullarzazs9601 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agent P > There's not much you can do to prevent water from freezing when it's left in the car. Maybe you could half-fill an old soda bottle with water? Soda bottles are thicker than water bottles and you'd only want to fill them halfway to give room for the inevitable ice expansion.
      I personally have had decent success with the mylar water pouches. They're not perfect - I've had a few failures, but I take the precaution of placing them in a freezer bag so if they do freeze, break, and thaw, they won't get any kit contents wet.

      It probably got tossed in the trunk of a car and simply left there for years. Vehicle trunks aren't exactly dust-proof and neither are those boxes. Still, it's a cheap, crappy kit - even from back in 1978.

    Yeah car packs dont hold up. The soups and coffee were off the shelf stuff too with probably only 1 year shelflife in 1978. The candle melted a few times huh? Clever use of the cans for heating snow I guess.

    The picture shows taking a lit match to the bottom of the candle. Was there any sign of wax on the bottom of that unit? Maybe you melt that then fix it to the dash or some other level point in the car. This would give a little extra stability so you don’t knock the candle over and set fire to the interior of the car or be less likely to spill the container you’re making your soup or coffee in.
    Like others have suggested, I reckon this unit would have had a shelf life of one year, maybe two, then you replace it with a new one.
    It looks like a good idea, especially if you live in states prone to that sort of weather and getting stuck in your car when conditions suddenly go from bad to worse and the only thing to do it ride it out until the authorities, or a passing stranger in a truck or 4X4, can rescue you.
    Soup for a little nourishment, coffee, and candy for a sugar hit to fuel your body burning calories in the cold. Having to get out of the car to pee wouldn’t be enjoyable. Especially for women.
    Nice review, as always, Nathan. A pity all the food contents were spoiled.

    • @4EyedFox
      @4EyedFox 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The candle would have been skinny and rolling around in the can if it had not been melted like it was. Heating up the bottom of the can would transfer heat to the handle and melt it to the inside of the can so it could not fall over. The diagram was not very good.
