    I really like this video because it was so informational about daily life and the costs. I did not realize that people get paid so little there and the rent is barely affordable.

    The breakdown of cost of living is very interesting. I liked the sit down with you going back and forth with you, then footage of Positano. I end up cooking more after watching your videos, trying similar foods that you are making and I'm having such a good time with it and learning about the seasonal way you cook. It was entertaining to watch you shoo-ing the chickens and the interview with Carlo. I pretty much like everything you show us! Thank you! Oh, another thing- toss/coat raisins, or any dried fruit, in flour and fold them in last, will keep them from sinking to the bottom of the cake.

    Hi Nicki, Wonderful video, again! Loved the "Chickens Gone Wild" part. Your food always looks amazing, and I loved your explanation about cost of living, but mostly TIPPING! Visitors need to have an understanding of this point. Molto importante bellissima !

    We got a chance to hear about Carlo's perspective of Positano and his passions. Would you be able to do a Q&A with Sky only if she is interested. It give us a different perspective of a different age group. Questions like, how does she like living in Positano, why she chose to go to school elsewhere, what are her favourite things to do in Positano, what she dislikes about Positano or Italy, her all time favourite place in Italy and why, when she is done school does she think she will stay in Positano and why-this might make you cry! Maybe in turn she or Carlo can interview you ask you questions, similar to what you asked Carlo. Additional content.

    Positano is a mini Switzerland, sadly same prices but crap salaries in Italy...Unfair. Its a good thing to tell folks about this, for many reasons. I am envious of your asparagus! I picked up a bunch in the shop here (Switzerland) and it was 10 euro! Being Scottish I immediately put it back down and walked out in disgust! Now you can show us all your asparagus recipes please?!

    The utility prices (cable, electricity, water) is much less pricey than here in NYC - as is the idea of a 1000 euro a month rental which wasn't even really possible here even 20 years ago for just a small one bedroom apartment. Though I know finding availability in Positano is difficult. Food costs, when I have stayed there, I found to also be a lot less pricey for meat, chicken, fruit, vegetables. I find that all over Italy including in Positano. I was told last year when I was there by a hotel owner that finding places for seasonal workers to stay now is a nightmare given the issue of Airbnb and other vacation rentals - That practice has change the face of many destinations and cities worldwide. Thanks for doing this - it is helpful, I'm sure, for all those imagining living in your lovely corner of the world.

    • @NickiPositano
      @NickiPositano  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, please remember that I mentioned that the average worker gets between 1000-1500 euro a month wages. So the price of rent may be cheap to you but if one person is paying that rent and earnin only a bit more it is difficult.

    • @LeeThrough
      @LeeThrough 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NickiPositano Oh, I know - I was just musing on overall differences including the income differences. I am just hoping that people in the area will soon again be able to be earning once again.

    I LOL’ed at the video of you chasing the chickies to get them back home - good stuff! For Carlo, answering if he’s always lived in Positano- seemed sad to answer “yes!” for fear of judgment but that he’s travelled in other places. But if your ♥️ is happy, that’s where your home is - and it’s lovely!!

    • @NickiPositano
      @NickiPositano  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, I'm Carlo, thank you, actually I was not sad or worried about any judgments or criticisms, but I was simply using one of my many expressions on my face which often unknowingly or not, I do, many times I have been told that I have a very expressive, in the sense that I use facial expressions a lot, now I have no idea if this is true or not, but the fact remains, that because of the character I have, I hardly fear the judgment of others!

    • @margal3120
      @margal3120 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NickiPositano that’s wonderful to know! My youngest has a “non-poker face” with all her expressive expressions lol I told her to never play poker or she would “give her hand (cards) away” to others 😂♥️ we love your family’s videos in your “daily lives” - thank you!

    Just killing some time waiting till I can start the jobs around the house and go mountain biking once again. Love the insight you've provided. I really enjoyed traveling in Italy and always found people fascinating and thought I understood the financial hardship and it was very apparent after travelling out of France and Northern Italy (Milan and Como). I liked the rundown on cost of living and while the prices for food and services seemed substantially cheaper and rental reasonably equivilant to that here In Australia but puting that in perspective with wages and the continuity or lack of income for some. I had no idea that tipping was a thing in Italy and thought that only happen in America.
    Carlo's answer was a good one "I feel like a citizen of the world' just a pity many more people don't would share in that attitude, we'd all be a lot off and happier.

  • @watcher223

    We used to make homemade pasta after church on Sunday. Mom made the dough, brother and I shaped the pasta. Older sister was married, lived elsewhere. Did not realize tipping was accepted in Positano. Some parts of Italy it is suggested to round up the bill, not actually tip a percentage. In the USA we always tip. My daughter tried letting her chickens walk about outside of the cage. A fox decided they were great treats. After the loss of 2, they are now back into the spacious coop. Always look forward to your videos and enjoy all of them.

    • @NickiPositano

      I think that because there are so many tipping American tourists that come to Positano, the workers have become used to it.

    It's impossible not to want to come live there (in Positano) given the AMAZING views you're showing us. Plus, the majority watching your videos must have a bit on interest in this country, even if they don't want to live in that city, but would prefer Rome, Milan, or some other city...

    Nicki so many laughs this morning. I'm watching with my first cup of coffee as I wake up. You herding chickens had me chuckling as did Carlos responses to your questions. I don't think any man will think he's typical! Just a little thought for anyone wanting to spend time in Positano or along coast. Look for housesitting opportunities. I travelled all over United Kingdom and Europe by housesitting and have stayed in amazing locations, from a five hundred year old villa near Florence, a beach house on Paros, an old inn in Yorkshire, a cottage in Scotland near the sea (that's what took me to Scotland, and I didn't leave for three years) and lots of other places. I did that for three years before falling in love with Scotland.
    Also would you consider putting a tiny cottage or space on your property just big enough for a bedsit, as I think loads of people like myself would love to stay and walk your path, herd your chickens, and go see everywhere you point out. Just a thought. Oh and have a piece of Dorset apple cake too. Oh and PLEASE do a makeup tutorial because I love your fresh look and love all the lovely dresses you wear too, where do you get those if you don't mind me asking.

The average wage here for the professions you mention is just under 1,000€ a month. It is impossible for a single person to come here and find a regular job and survive! You need at least two people working or another income source as well. Thanks again for the interesting info.

    Catching up on watching your channel. Wow! Believe it or not the cost of living where I am outside Dallas is almost the same as Positano! I rent a really nice one bedroom condo in a great location on a local lake for a little under $1000/mo. That is a super deal here as most new apartments start at $1200 for a studio! Utilities are about the same. I have a car and a car payment, insurance-also the same. I get a free parking space. I think our electrical grid is a little more robust but I pay a little over $100 USD a month on average. I was especially intrigued by your internet bill going down with fiber. My internet is very good and reliable but is $100 USD a month with a basic TV package thrown in to get that price. I only watch one channel but I need the internet! My food bill is about the same as yours but no garden and I eat out maybe once or twice a week. I also have a fairly good paying job to be able to afford my lifestyle. Very interesting Nicki. Thank you for this very informative video. P.S. I love pasta but have little patience for making it like you did! My patience is spent on non-consumables. But your dish looked mighty yummy! P.P.S. the herding chickens segment was hilarious. 😂😂😂

    Thank you Nicki! I have discovered your videos only recently and now I am watching 2 or 3 a day! When did you start, so that I can go back to the beginning? I find your videos very inspiring, and have been motivated to be more versatile in my cooking and baking and, in general, to admire what is around me. I moved from South Africa to Portugal last year and now live in a tiny place on the coast of Algarve. After living in big cities all my life I love living here where people in shops greet you by your name and where you actually know your neighbours. Greetings, Virginia

      Hi Virginia, I'm Carlo, Thanks a lot for the comment, very nice, so if you want to start from the older videos you have to go here; th-cam.com/channels/iTHbmAiRSsYTK9BRmWsMsA.htmlvideos
      then scroll down the page, and you will find the older ones, as far as small towns are concerned, I know exactly what you are talking about, and what I like best, but don't forget that even this type of interaction has its downsides, I hope not, but probably yes, I'm talking about when someone might be too curious about your business!

      Happy New Year to you and your family. Greetings Virginia

    Thank you for that crucial breakdown of " the cost of living in Positano". Unfortunately AirBNB has contributed to more cities' in Western Europe to no longer being affordable for locals as one chap a Jeweller in Florence said, he feels like an animator in his own town for the tourist invasion as the only local who actually works and lives in Florence town centre. Seniors living alone as well as single young persons can't afford to live in their local location and hotels have declining business. We seniors move to Eastern Europe due to lower cost of living average pensions, the young become ill due to stress and so forth. Unfortunately we as spiritual beings are placing currency on a higher level than our personal human value. On the other hand we all move to and live in the spas countryside and visit the once were home locations during tourist season as tourists of our planet. Some major cities in Germany have clamped down on AirBnB for this very reason. Anyone who rents their apartment 's through airBnB to earn are fined then the apartments are confiscated by the local council for not letting their apartments to locals who are the working force "nuts and bolts" that keep the cities and towns oiled. Medical, teaching, service staff and many many more. I've been mainly a freelancer in education, tourism, political, medical and am in NZ mainly due to these higher expenses and my adult children live with their families in Western Europe where I've spent more of my life. I have tried all other options such as a downsizing, a senior commune, East Germany, and it wasn't an option. A cousin of mine also a freelancer, Journalist moved back to his birth country Australia and his daughters also live in Germany. Life could be so much simpler and yet has become more complicated due to a currency being of more value than a humans' life.
    After watching, listening to you, I'd like to say no intention to upset you, I'd stay where you are, you love the place on that note, let the next generation do the walking for you when the day comes, and you need to mimic Carlo's father in reference to steps. Take your time and enjoy each day as it comes. I'm only early sixty now with a physical disability, and it's always a pleasant surprise being offered help to carry stuff, chats with the couriers and so forth, and no I have no family nor friends here, I didn't mean to stay longer than two years except I created a CNS cancer due to a stressful lifestyle and instead of dying as I've been told three time during the past four years I keep waking up. Just wish someone would tell me what it is that I need to complete. The Moral of this long comment is, I can't remember darn. So have a warm chocolate and hugs all round.

    Delightful to watch... Interesting to know the expenses (way lower than in LA :) even though it's a tourist resort) ...plus got inspired to look up the: interesting Dorsett Apple cake recipe - for the magical though elusive moment when I can tear myself off travel videos to whisk myself off to the kitchen and whip up a cake :)

    The chicken wrangling was a funny bit. Can Carlo say things better than using the words "You are Wrong"? Because it comes off as rude to most people. Yes Carlo is typical mans man. After watching most of videos now. I got addicted to watching you channel. You two remind me a bit of my parents.
    My mother was a beauty, educated women from a huge city. She met a charming good looking fellow from the deep south that she could hardly understand what he was saying and he pursued her. They were married quickly. His charming winks and story telling had her sold. They traveled and lived across the US and abroad. He was a mans man also. Fixed and took care of the home and cars and always had a second little job for extra money. She took to learning how to cook southern foods for him, arranging all the social functions, camping trips and vacation plans on a cheap budget. Later came children (took 7 years and many miscarriages) that they both adored. All the women thought how great my dad was. My mother would say "If they only knew" and laughed. Married for over 65 years. Bickered about everything...Where the sink sponge should be placed, How much toilet paper needs to be used and Why does he pee in the yard we live in the city. Ha Ha Ha Both failed in health at same time and passed within a year of each other at about 85 years old.
    I love your family and comradely with everyone. Wish you a long life together.
