Rick Steves keeps opening the doorways of Europe, sharing experiences that very few ever have the chance to accumulate. Many thanks for the generosity and enthusiasm.
I spent 2 days in Naples as a stopover in Italy between Rome and the Amalfi coast and I absolutely adore it. The plan originally was just 1 day but I felt I had to extend it so I could see more. And I still want to go back! The soul and spirit of Napoli is amazing, love it.
watching "the singing merchants" moves me!! It seems such an antiquated thing, all that theatre and pride in their wares. Europe is changing so drastically from year to year now, and I wonder how long the singing merchants in Napoli will continue? God bless them. And thank you, dear Rick Steves, for bringing so much of Europe's beauty to us.
I lived there in the mid eighties for nearly 5 years. I was reminded of how lucky as an American kid I was to live amongst culture, history and amazing cuisine. I lived in a beach resort town about 25 minutes north of Napoli in the south end of Pinetamare at Fontana Bleu. My parents were avid travelers and always took me on vacation. I remember historical things that would easily be forgotten reading a text book in class. I knew the average kid my age back home would never have this opportunity. I think most military kids who live in exotic places overseas are handed this lottery ticket of opportunity. It was a short trip from the NATO base to the Mergellina rail station and about 10 to 15 min to Piazza Garibaldi. I miss the markets, trips so Sorrento, Ischia, Capri. I was always in the moment.
That was very nice Rick Steves i enjoyed it, i was station there in the bay of Naples on a ship back in 1952 and you brought back a lot of memories to me and thank you so much, the ship was USS Adirondack Wow, Wow and Wow and i as a sailor.
Love this show! In naples dont try to find the fancy restaurants. Find the pizzerias in the side alleys with plastic chairs, the food here is cheap and superb in quality. The people in Naples are so kind and willing to help a lost tourist (do beware of con artists and pickpockets). The thing that surprised me the most is the vast amount of Cultural heritage this city has produced across almost every age past!
It's not all crazy. You can enjoy an exquisite limoncello with a sfogliatella (the other two great but gems of Neapolitan food often overshadowed by pizza) overlooking picturesque if not breath taking scenery. Italy. What a country from head to toe.
Thanks for the video sir! I've been all over the world, and I've found Naples the most real city with a HUGE heart. God bless Naples, Italy, come to Naples, it's absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!!! LOVE FROM GREAT BRITAIN.

@@lorenzopeverelli7819 dude im Swedish. That margarita is good as a carb source but you need to add protein and vegetables. I did that tour in Pompeii and was very disappointed with that margarita pizza we got. Having said that I then went to Lido de Ostia just outside Rome, and ordered a pizza with seafood on it, it was probably the best pizza I ever had. Seafood is very expensive in Sweden. To get a whole pizza with piles of freshly caught mussels. oysters, shrimp and so on, for a pretty low price aswell, that was fantastic I must say

I enjoy your videos. Thank You. You show a good perspective for the future travelers. You took me right back to Naples and Pompeii. My kingdom for a pizza.
I found Naples to be actually much safer than Rome. We were in Naples for a week travelling from Venice and then continuing to Rome. At first, I thought that I will die in there in an hour, but it didn't take long for me to start liking that place. I fell in love with Napoli one evening when we went out for a pizza(going to Napoli and not tasting their exquisite world's most original pizza is a sin) and, by a total coincidence, Napoli, their football team, was playing that evening. It was just gorgeous how the whole city stopped and watched big screens in all those restaurants. Just an unique experience. And the city is very tourist-friendly, it is very cheap, we got an accommodation in the very center of the city center(right on the street of Spaccanapoli) in a beautiful old house for a very good price, a price I couldn't dream of getting for a city center place even in my hometown. But in the Rome, the very first day we were there I got my ID wallet stolen... I got no money there, because ever since I got it stolen in my hometown, I wear two separate wallets - one for ID cards and stuff and another one for money and credit cards that I usually keep literally on my heart - in the inner pocket of my jacket or a shirt, so the thief just threw it on a ground when escaping and I got it back, but anyway... One almost surreal scenery in Naples occured to us when we were walking down the street to our accomodation and we met a crowd of people carrying a coffin and shouting something about stopping a mafia. We found out it was a funeral of a boy that was killed by some gang two days ago... Absolutely surreal. But regardless of that, we didn't really feel threatened, people there, even though some of them looked like mafians, were really helpful and nice. We also took a break from our sightseeing to go to one of their lovely islands, a small island with only one little town on it called Procida and took a bath in the sea. It was an oasis of quiet and beauty. We had a really great time there and I would go back there anytime!
Jay Clarke Yeah, we were there last year and it was visible that they are trying to improve the safety, there were soldiers patrolling all around the city. A day before we arrived the police actually arrested a major mafia group, something like 30 guys, most of them mafia bosses, but I don't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing, because I heard that those mafians had a respect for tourists and some of them even protected tourists because the tourism was a profitable source of income. But 10 years ago, Naples was in a deep trouble, they even went bankrupt, so I can imagine that it would be a bad place for a holiday back then...
Dear Rick, Please, please, redo these trips now. You inspired me to take a chance and travel for the first time alone (my daughter in tow) and I continue to look to you for guidance. Hello Rick, I do love and appreciate your travel Guide shows. I get to learn so much and get inspired to travel. I just wanted to ask you to please consider doing a video on Ethiopia. There is so much to see and learn from. Plus its a way to promote Ethiopia to the world.
Very interesting the Spanish heritage of Naples and much of today's Italy, in this case very noticeable in the flag of Naples itself and the Napolitan language, one of many languages and dialects of Italy.
Matt Owen Spanish occupied Naples & rest of the Italian south, but I challenge any Spanish speaker to see if he can understand the Napolitan language. even Non Naples "italian" speakers can't fully understand! perhaps its because Spain wasn't the only one to occupy. Byzantines, Romans, Austrians, Greeks, French bourbons.
Naples unfairly earned a negative reputation up through the end of the 20th Century.. The HQ of the USN 2nd fleet and a main liberty port for Navy East coast ships carried a lot of negative stories home. Today it's a major stopover port in general for cruise lines floating the Med. Also one of the main jumping off points to the Isles of Capri and Ischia or over to Sicily . The city underwent a recent major cleanup and even bravely survives a garbage strike every 4 years.. Working hard to improve it's image. Glad it was on my list.
Naples is improving :), since 2010s it became a lot cleaner and safe, also, just this morning, European Union gave italy €209 billions that will be mainly used to improve the South and make it independent from tourism in order to be as advanced as the central europe zone that includes Northern Italy, Germany, Austria and France and is the richest part of Europe
What a wonderful tour through this area. I'm sad. I've never been to Italy and would love to see places like Pompeii and Herculaneum. That would be a dream.
I had visited Naples and Pompei, along with Harculanium , courtesy,m y son. It was overwhelming. Perhaps I ll never be able to go again. ButThank you, Rick steves, You made me revisit through your beautiful video, featuring the salien spots. It is a video by an expert, created with sensibility and intellignt economy, so comprehensive!
Personally, I find Naples safe, which is not what my Italian friends say; then again they haven't lived in the parts of London I have! The food is Amazing, the contemporary art (Villa Madre for example) has one of the world's best collections. All up, it gets my thumbs up. It does feel more Eastern to me than European, there are elements of Bangkok (another of my favourite cities for its culture, food and diversity) and my Neapolitan partner says it feels more like Moroccan, which is great when you crave variance. Either way, a big plus is, it isn't overly touristed. Date last visited: 2020
Hi Rick, I really enjoyed all of your videos, wonderful. I viewed quite a few over the years. I am Italian married to the a Chicagoan lady, that has proven to be the most wonderful wife in the world. I love both Countries, to visit Italy is unmatchable......everybody should visit the country that it is home to 70% of the historical memories, not everybody will like for the same reason you clearly spelled out, still it is worth it.
Thank you so much for the mention of St. Giuseppe Moscati. Like many Catholics I find the hagiography version, the official propaganda, of such people unhelpful (putting it mildly). However, the Italian TV movie on TH-cam listed as Saint Guiseppe Moscati, English subtitles, is very beautifully shot in Naples. It is also true to the true events. It shows the enormous warmth and joy Dr. Moscati brought to the profession and how heartbroken he was when the Fascist/corporate government took over medical schools. I got some holy cards with a prayer for a young man doing his residency. His sister plays volleyball and her team went to Naples last summer, staying in the Spanish Quarter in a Air B&B. Since she is also my grandson's girl friend, I now have someone to talk to about Naples. Grazie Mille, for this excellent show.
Great coverage on Naples. I visited Naples during 2014-2016. It is now under renovation and everything is taken away and scaffolding covers the Galleria, Opera house and the square. You video certainly brings back the great and picturesque sites. Hopefully, in a few years Naples will uncover the scaffolding and become alive once more. Thank for your informative travels thru Italy.

+Bill Bergendahl What did you see in Pompeii that i missed out
Bill Bergendahl
I saw Rome, Ischia, Naples, Capri, Lucca, and Herculaneum.
The people of Pompei disagree.
I appreciate you so much Rick! Thankful that you allow us to travel along through the screen. ❤️
Gaetano Manfredi the Italian archeologist who gives Rick Steves a tour in Pompeii ( 15:00 min of the video) is not only intelligent and engaging in his explanations but also incredible handsome! I've been on several tours with Gaetano and can confidently say- if you happen to visit Pompeii - only go with Gaetano !
He is incredible !!
I also love Rick Steves and always read his advice before traveling to any new place !!!
Excellent video !!
Simple truth!
Gaetano was my colleague years ago. Clever and charming man
Hello Vera
Italy is one of the Coolest places on Earth !!!

Naples had a NYC feel to it while I thought Rome felt like Chicago. Loved Naples. Vibrant.
Back in 2001 I visited Naples and Pompeii with a tour group. That part of Italy is really beautiful. There is a shopping mall in Naples that looks like the one I visited in Milan.
Great. Show
..been. to. Italy. ...choir. tour

Hello Rick, I do love and appreciate your travel Guide shows. I get to learn so much and get inspired to travel. I just wanted to ask you to please consider doing a video on Ethiopia. There is so much to see and learn from. Plus its a way to promote Ethiopia to the world.
i am from india and live in dubai i love your shows i want to say thank you Steve's you are great person 🙏 I will try same pizza 🍕 tomorrow
They look and speak like Latino in U.S.
Neapolitan is totally different from Spanish language. Our language comes from ancient greek and latin language...
@@lisabolo26 Neapolitan is more similiar to ancient greek language instead of spanish...
It's the best channel for travelers! I really enjoy it! Keep doing more. Thank you.

Rick Steves´ Guides are the very best
What a wonderful tour through this area. I'm sad. I've never been to Italy and would love to see places like Pompeii and Herculaneum. That would be a dream.
Mee too
I had visited Naples and Pompei, along with Harculanium , courtesy,m y son. It was overwhelming. Perhaps I ll never be able to go again. ButThank you, Rick steves, You made me revisit through your beautiful video, featuring the salien spots. It is a video by an expert, created with sensibility and intellignt economy, so comprehensive!
Great Documentary
Steve! you are awesome!
Rick has such a great job! Thanks for sharing your journeys!
GREAT VIDEO RICK!!! I WOULD LOVE TO VISIT NAPLES!!!! IT LOOKS LIKE A REALLY FUN CITY!!!! WITH A LOT OF ACTIVITY!!!!
You have had great shows over the years!!!! Excellent job!!!!
very intriguing very cultural!!! culture can be friendly and loving too!!
Rick Steve's smokes more weed than Snoop and Wiz combined. He's my hero
Your journey makes me dream all day.
good video & awesome city Napoli
Enjoyed this must visit city. Thanks Steve!
I have lived many, many places on this planet, and Napoli is THE place I would choose to move to again.
I don’t think that’s a good idea
@@VesuviusGaming-um5yn like I said it's a wonderful place to live but I wouldn't want to visit there.
The Front Porch if the volcanoes do wake up that’s not a good sign
Heading there in September. Only get a day (part of a cruise) but will certainly hit Pompeii and make time to stroll around Naples and get some pizza!
How was it? 👀
POMPEI IS THE BEST AND FASCINATING PLACE IN THE WORLD! Belive me
I have always enjoyed watching videos about Pompeii; I always thought it would be the most fascinating place in the world!!🙂
Herculaneum is better
Probably
@@gianmattia13 what is the difference with pompei?
@@jehannemarie1163 They are both beautiful, I just prefer Herculaneum most.
I suggest you to check it out.
I Love you Italy.
i went last year.. feeling grateful i was there before the COVID19 storm hit. I love naples! I enjoyed it more than Rome!
Steve videos are just great. That pizza looks so good
I'll be in the Neapolitan Metropolitan area in about a month, I can't wait!
After 6 months, what experience did you do?
One day I will travel, but for now I travel with Rich Steves.
I come from games called Father and Son, it is very touching story. Now i can't describe how bad i want to go to this city. Sory for my bad english
Thank you again Rick...You continue to educated me from my travels..Thanks..
