Ugly Duck To Regal Swan - Mulberry - Wood Turning
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 10 มี.ค. 2021
- One of my most difficult pieces for a long while. Very hard wood, lots of inclusions, voids, etc. to deal with. Sanding was the worst! But, in the end, all my effort was worth it. A very beautiful show piece!

I hope it's the meds putting you to sleep and not me, Susan! LOL!
That's what I love about your work. You see the pieces as living things, not just hunks of wood. Very beautiful!
Yes! Thank you, Karen! 😊
My granddaughter and I have really enjoyed watching this. Mulberry wood is so lovely. Great bowl
Wonderful! 😊
Nature is beautiful, thanks for letting the wood speak.
Thanks for watching, Charles! 😊
A super bowl Phil. The shape, grain, and everything. Well worth the trouble you took to get it done.
Thank you, Marge! 😊
I absolutely agree with leaving the whole in the bowl. It is what it is. It is beautiful
I'm glad, Gary, thank you!
This bowl is even more impressive the second time watching it. So much to appreciate about it. Just beautiful. You create amazing art!
I'm so glad you like it, too, thank you! 😊
Gorgeous bowl!!! Bark, inclusions, cracks, grain, and the holes all tell the life story of the wood. Beautiful work Phil. 👍😊
So true, Mary! 😊
wow!!! the grain in this is so unbelieveable!! thanks for sharing this with us..
My pleasure, Ruthe! 😊
No matter what kind of "messed up" chunk of wood Tuffy sends...You can master it! It's always a pleasure to watch you turn a chunk of wood into a master piece! Keep up the great work!!🙂
Thank you, Peter! Cheers! 😊
You've become my 'go to' woodturner. Beautiful bowl and grain. 👍👍
Wow, thanks! 😊
I very much agree that the wood will tell you what it wants to be. I enjoy the pieces of wood that look like hell that most people would not want and just create a one of a kind bowl.
Those are my favorites too, Matt! 😊
I agree that the textures of a bowl like that are very important. The differences between the smooth and craggy surfaces are a large part of its beauty. Gorgeous bark.
We absolutely agree, Patrica. Thanks for watching!
Hi Phil. Absolutely Stunning, Tuffy provided the wood, you provided the Magic. God bless, stay safe. Tony
Thank you, Tony! 😊 Cheers!
Mulberry is such a beautiful and interesting grain. I love the end result of this piece.
😊
Indeed, an extraordinary and very shiny piece came out, you're really right about the sanding, it makes all the difference!👍👍👍
😊
I love everything U-turn you give explanations without having too much talking you do a great job I love you things are beautiful thank you keep them coming keep them coming
I love your philosophy behind your thought process in creating these beautiful works of art. I'd love to get some of the decorative wooden fruit and make that into a permanent coffee table piece.
😊
Such a unique center piece. Your right a fruit bowl or conversation starter. Beautiful..
😊
Kimsey seems like a great guy. Some of the pieces he picks to work on, I swear he must be crazy, but he manages to not only make it work, but make really cool stuff. Between the two of you, no piece of rotten or ugly wood won't find a second life as a beautiful object of art. I watch both of your channels because I love the funky wood too. The two of you guys are as different as can be, but have a shared taste in natural turnings, and I appreciate both of you.
Such a great comment, William, thank you! 😊
Phil, you listened to the little voice coming from that piece of Fruitless Mulberry. It said, "Phil, please take me, with all of my imperfections, and turn me into a beautiful bowl." You did that, Phil. It is a wonderful showpiece.
Thank you so much, Crystal! 😊
That's a fantastic way to put fruit on a fruitless tree. Beautiful piece!
It really is! Thanks, Jussi! 😊
Phill, you always manage to make something beautiful out of something most would pass up. I am starting to eye my sons pile of seasoned firewood.
YES! There is no such thing as firewood, Karl, if you have a lathe! 😊
Phil Great work, looks really natural . Thak you for showing us 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
My pleasure, Douglas, thank YOU for watching and commenting!
I love it - too see you how you play with what nature had given you in the piece. This is real artist work.
Thank you, Bruno, I'm glad you love it! 😊
I absolutely love it. The colors and grain is so pretty. If i had it i would use it as a yarn bowl, so my yarn wouldn't roll on the floor. God bless you Phil.
Great idea! Could you feed the yarn though the hole, Bonnie?
Phil, I am so glad I found your videos. Your commentary makes your work even better. Keep it up!
Glad you like them, Dustin, thank you for taking your time to watch and comment!! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thanks Phil. I really want to start practicing bowl making, so watching videos like yours really helps. I just do pens at the moment.
This is a bowl you can EAT! Fabulous.
Thanks, Jim! 😊
Good for apples, oranges etc, not so much for M&M's ----- BEAUTIFUL--- GREAT JOB
There you go, Jackson! Thank you! 😊
I just keep singing "Flat Bottom Hole, you make my rockin' bowl go 'round!" 😂
LOL! Well, whatever tunes your piano, Kerri! 😊
I was thinking that too, great minds think alike, fools never differ my ma used to say
Have a great day I gotta video to watch about flat bottom holes,,,,,🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I look forward to Thursday evenings. I do some turning then check out your latest turning. Another beautiful piece Phil.
Thank you kindly, Peter! 😊
Fruitless mulberry, fruitful work. It's a beautiful bowl. The grain is fabulous. Thank you to Tuffy for sending and to you for sharing. See you soon.
And, Thank you for watching! Cheers! 😊
WOW !! That wood grain is so awesome. You have made me look at my wood " collection " differently now . Look for the gnarly pieces first now . 😂
Very cool! I'm glad you are willing to give something a little different a try, Jeff. Enjoy making something fun! 😄
Yes it is beautiful. The holes are part of the beauty. You're a master!
Thank you so much, Karen! 😄

Thank you kindly, Gord! I really appreciate your support and great comments, buddy! 😊
I would have used that piece for firewood. Thanks for demonstrating how it could be turned into a beautiful piece
You are very welcome, David, thank you! There is no such thing as firewood if you have a lathe. 😊
That is so beautiful! I adore the nooks and crannies! It's like a visual representation of all we go through in life, in wood.
I totally agree, Nan! Nature representing life. 😊
That piece was you at your finest Phil.
Thank you so much, Dennis! 😊
Just amazing finishing Phil, thanks so much for sharing. Stay Safe, Jules, Droitwich, England
Thanks, Jules, you too! 😊
Just GORGEOUS Phil love it!!!🤩
Happy turning to you!!!👍
Thank you kindly, Jon! 😊
You sure show me a lot of favorite bowls Phil lol love it
Thank you, Bobby! 😀
Another gorgeous result, Phil.
I believe that pieces like this do guide the turner into revealing their story. Celebrating what it went through to find its way into our hands is the best way I know of to respect and preserve it.
Dynamic was what struck me as you worked the bottom side.
You did it proud, for certain.
Well said, James! Thank you!
Phil this is a gorgeous shape..I love your natural bowls.I know they are a little harder work but they look so natural ,and as you say the bowl comes out of the wood so you don’t even know what shape it will be.This is one of my favourites .Suits the grain to ,and the finish looks amazing 🥰
Thank you very much, Christine! I'm so glad you appreciate the nature in a piece.
Very expressive wood. Thank you Tuffy! Truly did not know what shape you would end up with when you started. So much ugly stuff to go through to get to the good stuff.
It did take a while to get there, Valerie, but worth it in the end. 😊
Good evening, Phil. That piece had me scratching my head but look what you made. Excellent! I watch Kismey as well and enjoy everything about his videos. Keep the shavens flying.
Many thanks, Ray! 😊
Hi Phil... totally worth the trouble... another big beautiful piece of nature... you did what you do best... take care...All the best.....Andy
Thank you, Andy, you take care, too! 😊
Absolutely gorgeous Phil. You're a wood whisperer 😍
Thank you kindly, Maurine! 😊
I think the hole adds a lot of character. Beautiful bowl Phil
Me too, John, thank you! 😊
Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, Adam! 😊
Yep. Love it just as it is! Your patience is amazing!
Thank you Guitar Man! 😊
Excellent project Phil! A complete 180 on that chunk of wood!
Thank you, Tina! 😊
Mulberry from Tuffy is much more beautiful with every next project. I think this is one of Your bestest bowls, Phil 👌 Totally is not looking like a wood, more like a marble. Please, don't stop surprising me 👍
Thank you very much, Rav! 😊 How's the moving going?
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Most of my stuff is here now. Packing boxes was easy but unpacking takes a time especially when the house is smaller than my previous flat. In next week I should start setting up the shed and the lathe so maybe I will turn something small 😀
Thank you. All of you guys. Kimsy Gary and Phil. Between the 3 of you guys you have helped me out with my learning. I have always loved a great teacher. Such a privilege to be a part of this. Especially after all of these trying times.
That is awesome, Edward! Yes, it's great to have something to keep us busy during this strange time we are in. 😊
WOW again Phil u really do a great job on the beautiful woods. I always just love the beauty in them. weldon and pls b safe.

Well another one of my favorites I have a mullberry in my back yard never seen the inside of it beautiful I really love that one. You are so relaxed I build bird houses and I'm in heaven when I'm working. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful work you do. You are probably going to build another building to put all those in ha ha ha
😊
Absolutely stunning!!!! Fantastic finish, great job Phil 😁😁😁
😃
You've nailed it again! I have learned so much from you ; not just the 'do this' info but you teach how to read your wood piece, how to approach a move and adjust when things don't go as planned. You are the best teacher for woodturning, whether you think so about yourself or not! Thank you for sharing your love of turning!
Wow, thank you! This comment is the pick-me-up I needed this morning! 😊
Phil what a beautiful bowl, thanks for sharing.
Thank you too, Tony, for watching! 😊
Wow Phil that is awesome I love what you leave on a bowl to preserve natural look
Glad you like it, Phil, and can appreciate what Nature has provided! 😊
Beautiful wood and a talented turner. Thank you for sharing.
😊
You certainly hit the mark with this bowl, well done.
I'm glad you like it, Sonia, thank you! 😊
Hello Phil
BEAUTIFUL piece!!!!! I truly enjoy watching what you do with such odd rough pieces of wood. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I really appreciate and learn from all you videos. Stay Safe and Well!!
Thank you, Ron, I will. You stay safe, too! 😊
Truly an amazing turning Phil! So much to watch and enjoy.
After you sharpened that gouge I think I could have used it for a mirror and shaved it it Looked like a mirror.. That is if I ever decided to shave.
The wood is smarter than us...at least me! Happy you listened to it.
You are so right about Kimsey! He does some very fine work with some very questionable wood.
Had to chuckle when I saw the none slip material through the bowl and then I said...oh wait this I Phil I am watching..LOL
You put an incredible finish on it even with all those beautiful voids. You mention how hard of a turning it was but you made it look so easy I not sure it is really understood how hard it was.
Great job my friend,
Gary
Thank you very much, Gary! Well, you know what happens when we edit. I think I cut out much of my troubles just for the sake of brevity. This one was really difficult but I know you can appreciate that.
I know what you mean about shaving! LOL! My blades last about a year, now! LOL!
Thanks, buddy, looking forward to catching your latest a little later on today.
Well I know cut out a lot of the Ahh....Shucks!!! what just happened Exchange what ever you want for the shucks part LOL
@@ThePapa1947 LOL!

Absolutely beautiful Phil!!!!!👍👍👍👍
Thanks a lot, Jack! 😊
Superb piece Phil, you are absolutely the best.
You are too kind, but, I'll take it! 😊 Thank you so much!
You always down play it, but for my money you are best wood turner on the TH-cam. I watch them all, there is a lot of talented people out there with tons of subscribers who are really talented, but none of them hold a candle to you.
That's the compliment now the gripe I just spent 5 hours re-sanding a bowl 'cause I kept repeating in my head " if it don't feel good it don't look good." you tips are either gonna make me a better wood turner, or a nut so thanks, Phil...which ever comes 1st depends on whether that is gratitude, or sarcasm. My wife said definitely sarcasm...not sure what to make of that..
Something tells me you drive your wife NUTS! LOL!
Thank you for your very kind comment, truly appreciated! 😊
Well worth every painful moment, absolutely fabulous!💕🇬🇧
😊
Breathtaking!
😊
Beautiful Phil love it hole is beautiful you did it again keep on turning buddy

That is some real pretty wood. The shape works perfect as a natural edge. It’s definitely a show piece that would go well in a cabin style home. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, Michael! Cheers! 😊

Definitely worth it!! Come on, with that beautiful grain!!? Thanks Phil.

Myself seriously ❤how it doesn't look "perfect" from the condition it was in
Absolutely stunning. What beautiful natural designs in the Mulberry wood. You are a such a high level mentor, which make it such a fantastic gift for us following you.
