The way burls grow is almost certain to produce something really cool. The trick is in finding those interesting designs that are in the burl. I do believe that you have discovered how to find the inner beauty of a burl.

Papa, Make it an alien bat and conundrum solved. As you started applying the first coat of sanding sealer I felt my smile getting wider and wider. That be one very well executed “Just what am I going to do and how am I going to do it” piece. I’m happy you saved so much of the burl, it gives the alien bat an excellent background of alien. Taking a needed break to grab some lunch while plumbers get theirs. It’s good just being able to get away and view some wood turning while waiting to get served. Interesting wood turning. I may have to buy one of those Sand-O-Flex attachments. You and Phil Anderson are on to something good with these attachments that seem to clean up wood nicely.
Thank you John. I have 2 smaller Sand O Flex's and one larger. I have yet to get any fillers for the large one. And it is the all metal one is very heavy. The knew ones are much lighter. Might pick one of those up. I think the large just might be better for this.

Gary, Complicated turning! I’d of never thought to hot glue a piece of wood like that-brilliant idea. Really nice completed project. Surprised how nice the unturned part looks.

Thus far I got hold of just one burl. Its Birch and full of splits. Not suitable for making a large piece but I can (and do) cut out small sections to use as inlays for mason jar lids. A burl is not normal wood and such a rare commodity. Good that you got hold of this beautiful piece Gary! 😎

...when you showed us that odd shaped block, I couldn't see anything of any size coming out of it...the fact that you kept so much of it and created this piece is a testament to your artistic ability...it's just gorgeous! Who would have thunk, a small hot glued piece of scrap wood would make a bowl look as nice as this. Gives me an idea of a segmented piece using the same method. What would it look like. Nice piece of work Gary. Love your videos. Paul
Thank you very much Paul. Once you trust hot glue it opens up a lot of options. The glue sticks that came with this gun is extremely strong. It does not release as easily with DNA as others but I could just cut this off. Happy you enjoyed the video, Gary
The thumbnail for this video really caught my eye, Gary! This was a troublesome piece to figure out how to mount and turn but, as always, you came through and created the very best this burl had to offer! For me, this is the best turning I have seen in awhile. It's perfect! It was fun watching you work out all the issues as you went along! And that finish! It's not always easy to get a great finish on a piece like this but, man, you really did a great job! The bowl is beautiful, my friend, outstanding! 😊 Phil
Wow Phil thank you very much. It was sure fun and you know me I like all the tinkering around and making fixtures to hold things. Sure made drilling the flat spot easy too. That big can off shellac seem to be going bad on me so I put some in jar and let it sit. Seem to clear up but seemed thick so I put some DNA on it. It sure went on nice. Well, I just couldn't see how you would get a decent sized bowl out of that piece! - and there am I, thinking you are needing to protect your shoulder, and you take on this challenge! I acknowledge the 'public health announcements' but "hat's off to you" for your vision, ingenuity and skill in even getting it mounted, to give you a fighting chance. Excellent job, Gary!

But every other day I have to put it through a semi difficult work out to get there. I mention that because I would not someone new to turning trying those methods. What a beautiful piece that you turned. I have some triangular pieces and have wondered how to mount them to make a nice vessel but could never come to a sure way to mount it without it flying off. You have once again solved the problem. Thank you very much for your continued great work

It's great to witness the methods and techniques that you bring to your videos. Also the occasional equipment/tool which is not so common today (the scribing block at the beginning). Some 42 years ago I was given two lumps of eucalyptus burr where one of the pieces I glued a piece of wood to it in order to get a centre onto it - much as you demonstrated. I'll stop there otherwise I will start to reminisce.
Thank you Anthony and nothing wrong with reminiscing. That tool is something I used at work as a wood pattern maker. I scribed lines on what I was building for various reasons. It is called a transfer gauge. I also have a height gauge that can do the same but has a Vernier scale to actually measure with. This one is easier when all I was doing was leveling the piece out close to the same. Thanks for watching, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Thanks for your reply. Although I will continue to call it a "scribing block" having used one in the UK since 14 years of age - I'm now 79. Obviously different contries have various words/meanings. Like you write pattern maker - which in the UK refers often to a dress/garment maker. Whereas in the UK patternmaker, as one word, refers to wood/metal/plastic relating to engineering. With all my tools and equipment I hate to think what will happen to them when I pass - my son is not interested. Hopefully some skilled carpenter/cabinet maker will get them. The demise of the foundries means patternmakers are rare. Keep the videos coming - I enjoy them - they are a credit to you!
Thanks Tony. I think of it as a scribe block as well. Not that many people even know what it is and what it is used for. I picked the name based on how it is sold. Had I figured out that you already knew what it was it would have been exciting knowing that you did. Same as pattern maker. So many people ask me if I made patterns for dresses. I would say as a wood patternmaker I made patterns made out of wood. Around here the official name is patternmaker just like in your country. When I retired I finally sold all my shrink rules and most of my pinch dogs. I kept my chisels (bench chisels) planes, spoke shaves and measuring tools. I did come across another bock of pinch dogs the other day. CNC took the real trade away and now the foundries are getting chased out of town as well. Nice talking with someone who knows what a patternmaker is! Gary

He would have cut it up and finished with 5 bowls, a box and a candle stick!!!!! LOL Seriously though, you done good. You did that piece proud. @@ThePapa1947 I am sorry Gary but I thought everyone in the turning world knows who Richard Raffin is. His on a level with David Ellsworth and the Battys, among others. Richard recently did a series on You Tube demonstrating how to cut up various odd and seemingly unusable pieces. He could cut up pieces that were odd shaped or those with severe splits and produce blanks for very nice bowls or boxes. My reference to him was tung in cheek. No disrespect taken Glen. I went to my first wood turning symposium early this year. I did see Stuart there but I also saw him back in early 2021. My doctor talked me into going. He is a wood turner as well. If a name is connected to a tool I recognize the name. Of course I know Carl Jacobson. He lives about 20 miles from me. When I met him the first time I had no clue who he was I bought his old Delta lathe in Craigslist. When he told me he made his living making TH-cam videos I looked it up. I had been turning my whole adult life and had no idea people were doing that. So all these well known turners were new to me. So not to worry you did not offend me. Gary

Wonderful result from a really strange looking piece. I'm not sure I would have had the confidence you did that it could come out beautiful. But you did it, and showed us all. Very nice work! ...when you showed us that odd shaped block, I couldn't see anything of any size coming out of it...the fact that you kept so much of it and created this piece is a testament to your artistic ability...it's just gorgeous!

Who would have thunk, a small hot glued piece of scrap wood would make a bowl look as nice as this. Gives me an idea of a segmented piece using the same method. What would it look like. Nice piece of work Gary. Love your videos. Paul
Thank you very much Paul. Once you trust hot glue it opens up a lot of options. The glue sticks that came with this gun is extremely strong. It does not release as easily with DNA as others but I could just cut this off.

The thumbnail for this video really caught my eye, Gary! This was a troublesome piece to figure out how to mount and turn but, as always, you came through and created the very best this burl had to offer! For me, this is the best turning I have seen in awhile. It's perfect! It was fun watching you work out all the issues as you went along! And that finish! It's not always easy to get a great finish on a piece like this but, man, you really did a great job! The bowl is beautiful, my friend, outstanding! 😊

That big can off shellac seem to be going bad on me so I put some in jar and let it sit. Seem to clear up but seemed thick so I put some DNA on it. It sure went on nice.

Well, I just couldn't see how you would get a decent sized bowl out of that piece! - and there am I, thinking you are needing to protect your shoulder, and you take on this challenge! I acknowledge the 'public health announcements' but "hat's off to you" for your vision, ingenuity and skill in even getting it mounted, to give you a fighting chance. Excellent job, Gary!

Shoulder getting better everyday. But every other day I have to put it through a semi difficult work out to get there.
I mention that because I would not someone new to turning trying those methods.

As for the burl, I think you chose everything just right, including the finish. I appreciate a satin finish on rougher edges, but I'm glad you went glossy. Great job.

Sometimes I am sure of what the finish is going to be but wait till it is sanded to make the final choice. This one was always going to be shiny.
Next weeks on the other hand I changed my mind after the first coat of sanding sealer went on.

Thank you Bill. Getting it setup to put a flat spot on it was pretty easy. Then when I put it on the worm screw and say how far off it was for the live center to touch anything I had to go have another cup of coffee LOL.

It's great to witness the methods and techniques that you bring to your videos. Also the occasional equipment/tool which is not so common today (the scribing block at the beginning).
Some 42 years ago I was given two lumps of eucalyptus burr where one of the pieces I glued a piece of wood to it in order to get a centre onto it - much as you demonstrated. I'll stop there otherwise I will start to reminisce.

That tool is something I used at work as a wood pattern maker. I scribed lines on what I was building for various reasons. It is called a transfer gauge. I also have a height gauge that can do the same but has a Vernier scale to actually measure with.
This one is easier when all I was doing was leveling the piece out close to the same.

@@ThePapa1947 Thanks for your reply. Although I will continue to call it a "scribing block" having used one in the UK since 14 years of age - I'm now 79. Obviously different contries have various words/meanings. Like you write pattern maker - which in the UK refers often to a dress/garment maker. Whereas in the UK patternmaker, as one word, refers to wood/metal/plastic relating to engineering. With all my tools and equipment I hate to think what will happen to them when I pass - my son is not interested. Hopefully some skilled carpenter/cabinet maker will get them. The demise of the foundries means patternmakers are rare.

Had I figured out that you already knew what it was it would have been exciting knowing that you did.
Same as pattern maker. So many people ask me if I made patterns for dresses. I would say as a wood patternmaker I made patterns made out of wood.
Around here the official name is patternmaker just like in your country.
When I retired I finally sold all my shrink rules and most of my pinch dogs. I kept my chisels (bench chisels) planes, spoke shaves and measuring tools. I did come across another bock of pinch dogs the other day.
CNC took the real trade away and now the foundries are getting chased out of town as well.
Nice talking with someone who knows what a patternmaker is!

I always like your videos. While you were trying to figure out what to do with this burl I thought you should give Richard Raffin a call. He would have cut it up and finished with 5 bowls, a box and a candle stick!!!!! LOL Seriously though, you done good. You did that piece proud. @@ThePapa1947 I am sorry Gary but I thought everyone in the turning world knows who Richard Raffin is. His on a level with David Ellsworth and the Battys, among others. Richard recently did a series on You Tube demonstrating how to cut up various odd and seemingly unusable pieces. He could cut up pieces that were odd shaped or those with severe splits and produce blanks for very nice bowls or boxes. My reference to him was tung in cheek. No disrespect taken Glen. I went to my first wood turning symposium early this year. I did see Stuart there but I also saw him back in early 2021. My doctor talked me into going. He is a wood turner as well.
If a name is connected to a tool I recognize the name.
Of course I know Carl Jacobson. He lives about 20 miles from me. When I met him the first time I had no clue who he was I bought his old Delta lathe in Craigslist. When he told me he made his living making TH-cam videos I looked it up.
I had been turning my whole adult life and had no idea people were doing that. So all these well known turners were new to me.
So not to worry you did not offend me.

Wonderful turn, Gary! With today's burl prices ($200-$300.00 for that piece of maple burl...) I would have most certainly taken the easy way out and cut it in half to make two smaller pieces. Like a natural edge hollow form and a box... However, you sure showed me what can be done with a little more patience and effort. Great job! V
