- My first time turning driftwood and if they are all like this, I'm hooked! LOL! I suppose in reality they are not so I think I got lucky with this beautiful piece. I don't know the type of wood but it may be Myrtle wood from Oregon.
Finished in shellac.

I’m from Oregon, now in Arizona. I make fine furniture and have used lots of that gorgeous wood. It’s Myrtle wood, only found in a very few places in the world. So yes, it’s rare. Great job turning that gnarly chunk of wood.
And to think it had just floated it's way to the beach, David! 😊
Oh, yay!! I’m glad someone could confirm the wood species !

Dave can you recommend a wood lathe?
Love this piece! After my parents retired they booked a trip to California, Washington, Oregon and my Dad brought me a covered desk top box made of Myrtle wood back on the plane. My mom said he held in his lap all the way! That was probably 35 years ago. I cherish that piece dearly. Oh dear. I am tearing up again. 😢
Great memories, Doreen! 😂
I am a 90 year old woman and love watching your masterpiece creations. My dad was a woodworker. Greetings from Vancouver BC Canada.E.Holze.
Hello up there, Elly! I've been to Vancouver a few times, lovely city. Thank you so much for taking your time to spend with me and for your delightful comment! 😊
You know, Phil, this piece of driftwood sort of represents us in a way. No matter what we look like on the outside....... Each person has a hidden beauty within..... Don't you think?
In some it could be intelligence, in another person it could be compassion, another would have insight, and still another might have inner strength... Or joy..... Everyone's got something.
This little piece of Driftwood of yours could teach us all a lesson. Look at all the beating it's taken as it's washed through the ocean and hammered on the sands of the beach (as we go through life people become that way). And then somebody like you took the time and trouble to find its inner beauty, and then shine it up!
It seems to me that we can and should do that with each other.
That is pretty much how I think of the wood I like to turn, too, John. Thanks for your thoughtful comment! 😊
You are so right in your observation. Now who would have thought that wood-turning could lead to this?
By far the best place to spend my relaxing time. While I do enjoy the more "polished" pieces that most people do, and respect their artistry, your style is my absolute favorite. Hearing you talk about the wood is so interesting. I also really like your calm voice and no "cover music". Thank you so much for sharing your talent and love of your craft.
Wow, such a great comment, Julie! You made me smile. 😊 Thank you, I needed that!
When I get to see pieces like this it reinforces to me how fortunate I am that people like you exist Phil so that I can sort of forget my disabilities & all the associated pain & relax while my friend Phil sets himself to explore & release the beauty of nature specifically in wood. You are a master my friend at working with, not against nature. With your wonderful way in commentating 'on the run' shows just how much you immerse yourself in carefully exposing the beauty just waiting to be release in your masterful way. Totally relaxing & wonderful craftsmanship on show for "all to enjoy'. What a joy you really are to the world of wood turning my friend. A truly magnificent piece of artistic wood turning in any way you look at it. I 'give up' on trying to say your 'best piece of work' because you keep on producing them. Keep it up my friend. Don from South Aust.
Wow, thank you, Don! I guess I was just amazed at the beauty inside a piece of driftwood. Had no idea what to expect so this turned out to be a real treat for me. Thank you, my friend! 😊
Well isn’t that amazing in that I discovered Phil just a few days ago and I’ve got to say not only the beauty of the pieces but also his voice really help me take my mind off my disabilities also
How is it that I found him just a week ago, and am disabled with chronic pain also and find Phil to be completely relaxing and mesmerizing. Watching him uncover what nature has hidden with his hands and a few tools, it is amazing to me. Phil, I loved this piece. And you are right in that those edges do look like the waves that made it into drift wood. Cracks, burrs, holes and all, it is absolutely perfect. God bless.
Here l am again,My son loves wood too,he made a grandfather clock out of barn wood,it’s beautiful, he has huge tree cuts for large tables, made one for his daughter,he will sell the other table tops, Love your work
That is awesome to have such a craftsman in the family, Anna! Thank you! 😊
Every time I start my lathe, I hear your voice "mask and face shield on!". Yesterday, the little Walnut bowl I was working on exploded, and I'm so glad I had my face shield on! I was almost finished with it....so just a reminder to all you turners out there....obey the Man. It may save your face. I was able to wood glue the bowl back together and finish it. Sometimes it's a practice piece, but you learn so much. Thank you for your wisdom! And nice bowl!! What a challenge,!
Oh wow! I'm so glad you were protected, Jennifer. The thought just makes me shiver. Thank you, I'm glad you like this piece!
This is among the talents
I live on the Oregon coast and after storms a lot of driftwood comes in and think of all the beauty! Thank you so very much!
Wonderful, Judy! I've traveled along that coast a few times but never even thought about driftwood. I'll bet you have a huge assortment to choose from. 😊
I to live on the Oregon coast. Sunset beach is just 9.2 miles away. This video has given me some good ideas what i can do with the driftwood I come across.
Once again, Phil, you've taken a chunk of wood and made a thing of beauty.
Thank you, Monte! 😊
Beautiful myrtle drift wood. The fine grain, color and location all match your suspicions. Those waves will give pleasure to all who view your work. 🌳
Many thanks! 😊
I love how so many of the wood grains look like seashells! Like nature copying nature but in a different form. Then you work your magic and expose it for all of us to enjoy.
Yes! And the waves! Cool piece for sure. Thanks, Leona! 😄
You always know when Phil brings out the Sandoflex, we will be treated to a special treat! You didn’t let us down. Beautiful!
Haha, thank you, Carol! 😊
Wow, what a Beautiful Piece of Driftwood. This bowl is absolutely stunning. It has so much character. Like you mentioned, the one part looks like waves on a beach. Your work turning this wood is such Artistry. What a gift you have. Looking at a piece of wood and making a Gem of beauty. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching, Marlene and for taking your time to comment! 😊
The journey that peice of wood took to end up in your hands is pretty neat to think about. Astronomical odds. Yet here we are. Love it
I like to think of it that way too, Patrick! 😊
As my turning mentor said: “never chuck a piece of wood you aren’t prepared to eat”. I recall turning a huge piece of Pine; turned to change tools; heard the funniest sound from the lathe; as I turned back, all I saw was this HUGE piece make the prettiest arc you could imagine. Would have bisected my nose and front teeth if I hadn’t gone for a gouge switch.
Ah, yes, the old turning mentor bad information thing. What he should have said was never stand in the line of fire. Also, if you are not turning, turn the lathe off. I'm so glad you weren't hurt, Samuel!
"Seeing" the waves and preserving them was so great Phil. Beautiful piece!
Many thanks, Tom! 😊
Driftwood is the best name for this piece. Just imagine the voyage it has had.
That's part of the fun isn't it, Muadibe. The story behind the piece. 😊
Phil you are too modest. The beauty in all your pieces are your work. This one is certainly at the top end.Beautiful.Terry downunder.
This was such a surprise, Terry and I love it. I'm glad you like it too, thank you! 😃
Very nice ! Clear vision.
Thank you, Craig! 😊 Cheers!
I’m amazed at those of you who see the possibilities in a piece of wood that would otherwise be ignored.
Thank you for watching and commenting, Toni! 😊
Or on the bon fire for a brief bit of glory.
There is so much to appreciate in this piece Phil. It is amazing all the different textures and grains.
I agree, one of the most visually appealing pieces I have done. Thank you! 😊
It's beautiful..I have a peice of wood with lots of gnarled spots and wild grain patterns..I sanded it and varnished and it never fails to make me smile.
Wonderful! 😊
You have a great gift, seeing the finished product hiding in the lump of wood. A great sculptor said “ All I do is remove what’s not a statue “.
Thank you, Bob!
Dang it Phil, I've been living on the Ocean for twenty years and I would have walked by that piece.
You have the skill to see things I don't. Take credit!
Haha! Well, I didn't find it but if Dennis brings it to me, I'm gonna try my best. And, that is the key, I think. Just mount it and see what happens. You can do it! 😊
Phil Anderson and his amazing sand-o-flex! I have to say that you’re one of my TH-cam woodworking idols . You always seem to know where and how to mount these natural pieces to bring out the best in them. This piece is simply amazing, thank you!
I think that the Sand-o-flex is going to be the next tool that I’m going to invest in. Your the only turner that I’ve seen use it on TH-cam, but you can’t argue with results.
Wow, thanks, John! 😊
I often say, if I didn't have a Sand O Flex I would not turn the pieces I do. I don't know any other way to sand the oddities I encounter in the wood I turn.
With what's going on in the world today watching beautiful piece of wood be turned added some lot needed calm and positivity to my day. Thanks!
I hear you, Jari. Thank you! 😊
I always learn something from your videos, in this case I got so much out of your approach to a complex piece of wood and the minimalist intervention to highlight the Beaty and complexity of the wood itself.
That's fantastic, F L! You've described my desired approach very well. I'm glad you can appreciate the nature in the wood, too!
Yes, we’ll described, Fiat
That piece of driftwood challenged you every inch of the way! Thank you for patiently and gently coaxing out its beauty. A beautiful piece!
My pleasure, Ingrid! Thank you for watching and commenting! 😊
OMG, Phil, that is an amazing piece! There just aren’t words that will adequately describe how beautiful that is. Thank you so much for sharing your work on this piece. Way to go, buddy! Just too pretty for words! 👏👏👏👏
Wow, thank you, Gord! It was quite a surprise to me. The wood was so rough and gray and then we got this! Just never know about driftwood, I guess. I'd like to try more but I'm afraid of being disappointed. They can't all be like this, can they? LOL!
I see you have a new video, hooray! I will check it out, soon!
Great work, Phil, you and God!
Thank you kindly, Charles! 😀
It's absolutely gorgeous - and while I'd love to put it on my table and admire it while deciding what best to put in it... I know one of my cats would climb in
Haha, mine too, Michelle! 😊
It's amazing how much beauty there is, hiding deep down in that gnarly piece of wood. Thank you for using your skills so well to let us all enjoy it!
That's my favorite part of turning, Dan. Finding what's inside some of these pieces. I sure didn't expect to find what I did in this old piece of driftwood! 😊
Have some driftwood and have had a problem with knowledge of turning it. Also have been a little hesitant due to not wanting to mess it up. Well Phil, this has given me both knowledge and confidence on preparing the piece and myself to turn. Thanks Phil. You help people n different ways and you don’t even know it. Keep up the great work and info you generously provide.
Glad I could help! I appreciate your kind comment, thank you! 😊
A beautiful chunk of Myrtlewood. I asked Dale Nish of Utah if he could only turn one kind of wood the rest of his life what would it be. Of course he said Myrtlewood. I've turned some bowls and it is an awesome wood. Great job Phil.
Thanks, Kent! 😊
Phil, you are so right, that's an exciting piece of drift wood. Can't wait to see what you create! 🇺🇲🐚
Thanks, Jessi, I hope you like it! 😊
You and Mother nature working in harmony Phil. As always it's beautiful, but what hard work for you. Thank you for the videos.
So nice of you, Brenda, thank you very much! 😊
You really are my favorite woodworking channel. The way you keep nature in every piece is phenomenal but it’s your disposition and calm, soothing voice that keeps me coming back every night.
Thanks Phil!
Wow, thank you, Debbie! It's so good to have you here! 😊
If you don’t mind I am going to call you Coach, this is exactly what I need to learn.
Works for me!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thanks.
Turned a piece of driftwood picked up in Alabama....had seashells and a fish skeleton inside....gave it to a friend for wedding gift....gotta get me a camera to display work...
Nice job... driftwood is exciting!!
Oh wow! Quite the treasure chest, Dan! Thank you! 😊
Hi Phil
I just wanted to say thank you to you for all the effort you put in to making your videos that we all watch for free.
You have given me confidence to turn difficult pieces of would and the results are very satisfying.
Keep up the good work
Michael 🇬🇧👏🏻
Wow, thanks, Malvern, I'm glad you are trying new things! 😊
Thank you for some sweet memories! My late father took up woodworking when he retired, and built some fine furniture. I loved watching him use his lathe to turn legs for furniture. I started laughing when you attached the plate with only two screws. Dad was always adjusting and making do in a pinch, and consequently, he always had a bandaid or two on his fingers. Thank you again, and for Pete’s sake, be careful😉
Oh, some great memories you have! My dad was the same way, bandaids and all. 😊 Thank you so much for your great comment!
My aunt had a popular hobby back in the 50's, driftwood lamps, I loved them, no one else in the family did. Your art is much more appreciated
I'll bet she had fun with her hobby, too! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Indeed she did🕊
Driftwood and burls are always interesting and one of a kind.
Very nice !
😊
I think I may you figured out, Mr Phil! I have come to believe that you truly enjoy the challenge of turning the unusual pieces that everybody else doesn’t see the potential of! Couple that with your obvious talent to “think outside the box” , so to speak, is a winning combo. That piece would be a magnificent addition in the entryway of someone’s home to collect keys and other miscellany! Well done!
You are right, Charles! I can barely bring myself to turn a plain, round bowl, anymore. Thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😊
You know, every time I watch one of these I think exactly that.
Phil this piece is beautiful. I love the nature and how you manage to save it.
Many thanks, Jean! 😊
Also, I love your attitude about the "it's not what I did, it's NATURE letting me know if off" I totally love that! Keep'em coming Phil! You have a new subscriber
Always! Thanks for your subscription, Jinksy, I'll try to be worthy. 😊
Hahaha you don't even have to try
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil I don't know how you manage to create such beautiful pieces out of, well just ordinary wood. You see beauty inside a plain piece of wood. Thanks for your weekly tour of your skills. See you next time.
Oh, thank you, John! 😊
Is there any chunk of wood anywhere that you can’t turn into a masterpiece? Wow, dude!!
LOL! Yes, Betty, there have been a few. What a nice comment, thank you! 😊
Yep, definitely a beautiful piece. I was thankful you didn't get hurt making that. At times it looked scary. You are a very brave and talented artist, that is for sure. Thanks for another great video Phil.
Thank you so much, Kevin! 😊
Phil, you done it again. I can imagine losing myself for hours at a time, just staring at the grain patterns on the inside and the bumps and whorls and ripples that were onçe covered by bark on the outsidè, and counting every second of it well spent. Strange how our priorities change as we approach mid life, isn't it? You should be coming up on that yourself in a few years,. As always, sincere thanks and best wishes
Haha, mid-life, huh? I think I passed that about 25 years ago, Pete! 😊
It never ceases to amaze me what you can do with the oddest shaped pieces of wood...most of us would not even consider putting on the lathe. You also show us the beauty within that often needs to be patiently coaxed out a little at a time. I agree it is a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this unique piece.
Wow! Thank you, Stephen, for your great comment! 😊
It really is a masterpiece Phil. You’ve enhanced what nature provided 😊
There you go, thank you, Rosie! 😊

Thanks, Grammy! 😊
Are you stalking me? 👵🏼 😂 I’ve seen this same comment on quite a few of my subscribed channels, and not all are turning videos. 🤔🤔
The waves are fantastic I feel like I'm at the ⛱️❤
Yes, they are a big highlight for this piece, Libby! 😊
In from West Wales UK. Regular watcher of your videos. I love your enthusiasm for the natural form of the wood . Thank you😊
Good to know, thank you so much! 😊
You never disappoint. Your vision is just outstanding. I turn but I don’t have the vision to take a crappy piece of driftwood to the masterpiece you created. Awesome!!!
Thank you so much, Wile, I'm glad you like it! 😊
You are absolutely a wizard. Lovely work.
Thank you so much, Christo!💫
I showed this to my son, who just turned 6 this week, and he said it might be the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. He really likes the bits that look like waves, too.
Very cool, thank you, Cassie and son! 😊
I like the way you explain what you are doing and also the tools.
😊
Wow…just wow…! Absolutely gorgeous! My favorite piece of yours, so far.👌
I like it too, Cynthia! It was such a pleasant surprise! 😊
You did it again, Phil.
"Sun of the Beach" wood.
LOL! Good one, James! 😊
What a dramatic center piece this is going to be. ♥️🇺🇲
😊
Hi Phil,
This piece is really, really beautiful!
as a woodturner myself I know exactly what it takes to create a piece like this and you did a masterful job!
Thanks for the video,,,
Tom
Thank you so much, Tom, I appreciate your comment! 😊
Very, very nice, Phil! It does remind me of myrtle wood, now that you mention it. What a find that was! And what a beauty you revealed! Well turned.
Thank you so much, Dave! I really do think it is Myrtle wood and you're right, what a find! 😊
Giving new life to a discarded piece. Well done
Thank you, Janet! 😊
All those lovely nooks and crannies will collect the dust superbly!😊

😊
Oh my Phil that is a masterpiece and I think your best ever! Well done and thanks for another great video!
Cheers Al
Glad you enjoyed it, Al, thank you! 😊
Great transformation Phil....you managed to bring out the inner beauty while preserving the outer natural brutality of nature.....if it's from the Oregon coast....I say "Myrtlewood". Best wishes for Easter.
Yes, that was my guess too. It’s the right color.
I just don't know if Dennis got it from the coast or some river, Doc. But, I do kinda think it's Myrtlewood and that is cool all by itself! Thank you! 😊
Found it at Gold Beach, OR, on the beach.
Just seeing this video for the first time, Phil. I think this is my favorite of your turns.
It was such a pleasant surprise, Danella! 😊
As a beginner at the age of 60 i love your videos for the inspiration to find out, what beauty might in a piece of driftwood of firewood.
Thanks for that,Phil !
Wonderful! This is great to know, Stefan! I love it when my viewers start to think outside the box a little. There is just so much nature to explore in these pieces. Thank you! 😊
You have the gift.
Thank you for teaching.
So nice, Laurie, thank you for watching! 😄
YOU'D BE VERY SURPRISED AT WHAT THE LATHE CAN DO TURNING OUT SOME GREAT WOODWORK PIECES AND THEY SELL VERY WELL
Well, not sure why I would be surprised, Linda? Anyway, thank you for watching! 😊
I live 100:yards from the water, never found a piece like that. Beautiful job Phil!
It's hard to know what might be in some of the wood along the beach, I suppose. Keep looking, Chris! 😊
Wow Phil outstanding very very beautiful I love driftwood and natural wood like that you could never duplicate something like that even if you tried take care and God bless
Wow, thank you, Mike! 😊
I like driftwood untouched all by it’s self! You have taken it to another level my friend. I love everything about it. One of the things that I thought was awesome was that black blotch that went from the turned wood all the way up the side. The contrast was amazing!
I agree with your entire comment, David! Thank you! 😊
Not to shabby for an ol’ buzzard turner! 😃👍👍👌
Oops, ‘too’, not to.
You got that right, Roy! 😊
No grammar police here, Roy!
I could watch this all day, ThankYou
Wow, thank YOU, Anna! 😊
Looks like an angel wing.
Yeah, it kinda does, Sarah! 😊
Whodda thunk that gnarly looking piece of driftwood had that beautiful bowl hiding in it??? Obviously you see things that me and others don't! Great job as usual.
I appreciate that, Tom, thank you! 😊
Phil I have seen cords and cords of drift wood along the beaches in Oregon. But I never would have guest any had so much hidden beauty. I have even fished in the Oregon rivers and watched logs float down the rivers and never noticed what could be inside as they made their way to the ocean.

I know what you mean, Gary. It's always so gray and washed out, hardly worth thinking about but, now we know! 😊
It is so BEAUTIFUL. I love the way you explain what you are doing. Thank you
You are so welcome, Tammy, I'm glad you've found it helpful. Thank you for watching! 😊
Absolutely stunning Phil. The beauty of nature at work. Living one day, washed up on a river bank to be turned into a work of beauty. Love it!!!!
It makes a great story, Carl, thank you! 😊
A lump of awkward wood turned into a thing of beauty, once again I couldn't see it at the start. Well done phil and thanks again 👍
Thank you, Garry, I appreciate your comment! 😊
Second viewing of a wonderful and challenging piece. Great job, Phil!
Thank you, Richard! 😊
Hi Phil; I have a cottage about a 5 min. walk to Lake Huron so I do get a fair bit of drift wood. What I found over the tears is that driftwood is murder on tools. I've washed it, scrubbed it with a brush and pressure washed it but it always has that fine sand hiding in some little nook that is just calling for you to enter with your freshly sharpened chisel. Good on you for going after this project.
So true, Marilyn! 😊
Stunning. It’s amazing what you can just walk past when your out for a stroll. I will be picking driftwood up when I’m walking my dog now. Well done.
Sounds great, Ray! Hope you find some treasures! 😊
This is just another piece you have enhanced. Beautiful as always.
Thank you very much, Sandra! 😊
So Nice to see such BEAUTIFUL art come out of wood!
This wood just couldn't help it, Patricia! 😊
Awesome work! My wife saw faces in the finished product!
That is awesome! Thanks, Steve! 😊
Wow Phil. Absolutely stunning. Thanks
Very welcome, thank you for watching! 😊
Beautiful piece Phil, and you right I always give mother nature the credit for the beauty. Very Very nice my friend!
Well said, Torrey! 😊
Nice job Phil. It's fun cutting the nub off the way you do, but an oscillating cutter is much quicker. No accidents and no tear-out either.
Like you said, Jack, "it's fun!"
Started watching this video a few weeks ago, and just finished watching this dumbfounded Phil. Bow to the grandmaster, you are a champ and I love your masterpieces. big fan Phil BIG FAN , please keep posting.
