I actually had both systems as akid, and not because my parents were rich or anything. I live in an area BURIED in snow a little more than half the year, and lawns that need mowing consistently during the summer. When I was 10 I got a few neighborhood friends together and we did snow removal and lawn care services. I more or less got to have anything I wanted. I was far more of a Sega fanboy myself, but I grew up with a 2600, a 5200, and a 7200 eventually, and my first 8-bit computer was an Atari 800 XL. Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane.
Both systems have good polygon/ sprite scaling power but never had any games as good as Star Fox very few people got to play those games though some look cool
The funny thing about the Jaguar version of Doom is that while the music isn’t heard during the gameplay, it’s actually heard when you finished a certain level. For some of you who didn’t know this, an example would be At Doom’s Gate and unlike the 32X version, the background music from it is instead full of quacking ducks. And for the Pitfall one, what’s with that weird letterbox format that the Jaguar version had during the gameplay?
Well done! I am a Sega 32X owner and love the system. Sadly I missed out on the Jaguar. For the time the 32X had some very impressive hardware. Again it amazes me that it was not the home for more of Sega's impressive 32 bit arcade games. Many of those games never had a home console release. With that said it is nice to see many of these retro consoles get more attention especially with all the bloated, incomplete, microtransactions infected AAA games of today sapping the fun out of video games. BTW I used to not be a fan of Knuckles Chaotix but after giving it a chance and better understanding the rubber band mechanic, it became one of my favorite games on the systems. I am also really enjoying the fan hacks like Doom Resurrection and enjoy being able to play them on real hardware. TBH I am more excited about the news and release of those fan hacks than many current gen game releases. I hope this trend continues and would love to see more official physical releases for old consoles especially with physical media dying. Keep up the great work.
Yeah i absolutely loved the 32X when I was a kid (and have one today); it was like this mystical thing that only a few kids had, and my best friend had one (I was always over there). It was legitimately something that people were jealous of on the playground lol. Like, it's only really from a business / adult perspective that the 32X "sucked"; i mean EVERY kid wanted one where I lived. Virtua Fighter was just epic; best home port of Mortal Kombat 2; Virtua Racing was mind blowing at that time; the ports of Space Harrier & After Burner were just fantastic.. absolutely great stuff; just not a whole lot of it. However, I must say about Knuckles Chaotix: I've beaten that game in it's entirety at least 4 or 5 times. First thing is, like you said: Once you get used to the mechanics, it does become 2nd nature. There are all kinds of techniques that even the most hardcore Chaotix fans don't know how to do (based on the playthroughs ive seen on TH-cam). Like if you just trudge forward dragging the other character along and try to play it like a traditional Sonic game, then yeah, that's not much fun. (This sounds like how Mr. Greg here was approaching it, along with most people; which is understandable, as it looks like a Sonic game). But if you really learn how it works, it's pretty, very creatively fun to control; it feels really cool to be able to pull of all the different dual character mechanics tricks (In fact I think it would awesome to add some bonus stages in other Sonic games that play like this) However, there's 1 major problem, that has nothing to do with the controls: Once you master the controls and are ready for some challenge.. there is none. Virtually NO enemies, no real obstacles or challenges or anything. Many levels, in fact, most of the levels: literally have only 1 to 2 enemies on the entire level; and those levels are massive! The most I've ever seen is 3.. mayyyybe 4 on one level.. It's like running through an absolutely beautiful Sonic world (the graphics are so colorful and just fantastic; with equally amazing music), but a very EMPTY, beautiful Sonic world. There's just nothing going on. I could understand a couple of early stages being a little barren to give you a chance to get used to the controls; like a "training level" per say. But every single level throughout the game is a "training level". It's such a shame because I would love to actually be able to put my hard-learned Chaotix skills to the test with some enemies and obstacles and puzzle'y sort of platforming sections.. but there is just nothing of that in the game. It's very similar to when you get a good future in Sonic CD, where it gets rid of all the enemies on the stage and you just coast through with nothing to stop you. But even more simplified than that, as there's no tricky platform situations or anything either. I really wish they would have populated those levels in Chaotix with enemies and challenges; It would have been such a great game. But as it is: it just feels incomplete and empty I would love to see a fully fleshed out sequal that adds these missing essential elements; but that will probably never happen, since the original didn't sell well and wasn't recieved very well critically; which, in my opinion, is because of the emptiness of the game; not the fault of the controls as many would have you believe. That's just my 10 cents though
if you add the mega cd library to the 32X it massacres the jaguar.. the two lunar games, shining force cd, snatcher, space adventure cobra, popful mail, dark wizard, robo aleste, sol feace i could go on and on.. its not even a fair fight.. hell including the japanese only games makes it even better, stuff like Shin Megami Tensei, an Urusei Yatsura game, and a fucking Shadowrun game made by Compile...oof thats some good shit..
My roommate and I played the hell out of Hover Strike on the Jag. It has a mode where one player drives and the other shoots, and that’s mostly how we played it. It improves the experience immensely. And the CD sequel to Hover Strike is even better. Like you I also loved T-Mek in the arcade, but I’d take Hover Strike over it any day. I think it’d be worth trying co-op Hover Strike and going deeper into the game before passing judgement on this one.
As good as Hoverstrike was, the CD version which moved coding away from the 68000 to the GPU only saw an extra 3-5 fps increase, Atari should of kept Hoverstrike as a Jag CD exclusive, ditched the cart version. Would still of liked to of seen it in it's original, Battlezone 2000 form
Doom on Jag is a masterpiece, however the 32x Doom Resurrection is by far the best way to play doom on a 32bit console. Imo even better then the psx version.
The one thing that plagued the 32x was the fact that they let the Genesis render backgrounds and do a lot of the music so you still got a lot of the same grainy graphics and a symphony of farts you got on the Genesis so it wasn't much of an upgrade most of the time.
I had the Sega genesis, with Sega cd, and 32x on top. But for some reason, I went PlayStation and not Saturn. I grew up with Nintendo, so there are little cabinets for all systems in my heart.
I remember this era so well, yet the odd thing about it, was just everything being a massive blur at this point... due mostly to what was waiting on the horizon from the big 3. So many good things were just around the corner! I love videos like this though that allow me to revisit a lot of these games that would have otherwise been forgotten. Oh the 32x and what could have been. 🤔 Excellent video Greg... and bonus points for featuring two consoles I never we'd see in the same video. 👍
@@GregsGameRoom You definitely struck a nerve with this last video, but that's a good thing. I think about that particular 90s era just as much as I do the 80s stuff, and what an awesome time to be alive.
Team Jaguar! 🎉 But in all honesty, the 32x has some nice games as well. And hey, without the Jag, Sega might not even have come up with the need for the 32x, so they're kinda step brothers in the console world in a twisted way. Anyway, nice video, always love to see some decent Jaguar content. Cheers!
@@DeathMetalDerf Not quite true, as it was actually then Sega President Hayao Nakayama who was afraid of the Atari Jaguar and told Sega USA to come up with something in response. That Sega Japan wanted nothing to do with it, is pretty much historical revisionism, simply because it was such a massive failure.
@@ShadowAngel18606yep Atari burned sega in 2 ways by making it look like they still bad money to support a next generation machine and having a few impressive polished games that showed atari was competently running the company. 32x--Sega destroyed a lot of good will by selling a 32 bit machine that was not compatible with the Saturn, then made them rush to get Saturn out, burning retail good will, both decisions hurt relationships w/3rd parties that wasted R&D trying to support 32x. 2) Sega paid 40 million in settlement to lawsuits to patten infringements, that resulted in Sega owning worthless stock in Atari.
Great analysis :) I wanted to make a note about 32X's Doom. The scene has created the 'Doom Resurrection', a mod/hack which brings the 32X port much closer to the version seen in Jaguar, since among other improvements, the frame that reduces the vision area no longer exists, and the music and the number of colors on the screen.
It's a shame the 32X version of Rayman wasn't released, as that would have been an one on one comparison with the Jaguar version. Apparently it was developed up to the extent of being playable in CES 1995.
@@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 Yes, because apparently, the foreground was rendered by the 32X while the background was rendered by the Mega Drive, so the background of this version is different to the other ones. The foreground graphics (characters, objects, surfaces, closer trees and leafs, etc) seemed to be on par with at least the Jaguar version.
To be honnest, no matter whatever plateform or adventure game you would get in the Jaguar it wouldn't even reach the ankle of The Revenge of Shinobi or Strider on the MD/Genesis
I'm impressed you know so much about those not so popular gaming systems. I bought a 32X because I couldn't afford a Saturn. I only had Doom. I hated SEGA for it and got a Playstation later. So I guess it helped. But I played some games in emulators and well, they tried. But why did they release it in the first place? Focus on the new Saturn and make a few games for the good old Mega Drive and its huge player base. Like a third wheel in a relationship 32X was dumped pretty fast. Jaguar was hard to find even if you wanted to buy it. I only know one guy who had it, he was a big first person shooter fan, but sold it for a Playstation. There are some good games there, but it should have been released a lot sooner. Or Atari should have made it strong enough to compete with the modern systems of that time. A lot of classic gamers were expecting Atari's huge comeback, and it never happened. But both consoles belong in gaming history and deserve their time on the spotlight. Thanks for the video.
I had a Jaguar back in the 90's and was quite impressed by some games. Wolfenstein was a great version, though Cannon Fodder was my most played game on the system. I played the 32X many years later and quite enjoyed some of the games. Space Harrier was a great version on the system, but Blackthorne was easily a favourite of mine. Cool video, cheers.
This is a cool perspective from a Jaguar fan. I was a Sega fanboy back in the day. I loved my Genesis but never had a 32x. Played a few but (one that was on your list) and I think I've missed out. I never had a Jaguar but it's peeked my interest. I may only check these out in emulation (which I'd rather have the consoles) but maybe down the road I'll get my hands on the real thing. I like videos like this.
Like most of the console ports from that era, 32X Doom is actually based on the Jaguar version- it has the same cuts to the levels, with Containment Area (E2M2 in the original) suffering the worst but most maps losing at least some areas. The Jaguar version was actually developed by John Carmack so it's no surprise it ended up being much better than the others. One other odd thing with the 32X version: the BFG 9000 is only accessible via cheat codes. Presumably this is because none of the episode 3 levels made it into the final release, so there were no maps in the game that had a BFG already placed in them! (Though if I remember correctly the Jaguar version puts one in E2M3, so I'm not sure why that one didn't make its way into the 32X version.)
Iohn Carmack on 32X vs Jaguar Doom: Atari shipped the jaguar with a fairly serious hardware bug: the risc chips cannot reliably execute code unless it lies in the on-chip caches, which are only 4k and 8k in size. You can break your program up into a lot of overlays, but it is a big time consuming hassle, so virtually all jaguar games are going to execute the majority of their code on the 68k, which is only about one tenth the speed of the risc chips. The jag has lots of speed in it, you just need to sweat a bit to get at it. In contrast, the Sega 32X is less powerful, but very easy to get the speed (they have a GCC compiler for the SH2 chips). DOOM will be showing up on both the Jag and the 32X. The jag version will be a bit better, but it will have over twice the man-hours put into it. I am just now testing a dynamic overlay scheme that automatically caches position independant code on the local ram. It will be slower than hand-overlaying everything, but still several times faster than running on the 68k. John Carmack
I love Virtua Racing on the 32X and Shadow Squadron is really fun. I did own a Jaguar with the CD attachment and really liked the system. It had some really good games and some stinkers. Overall, I would go with the Jaguar but both systems are worth owning.
Cool video! I never owned a Genesis/ 32X but I do love the look & feel of that era. Skyhammer and Phase Zero might have been better comparisons to 32X tank/mech games though. Keep the retro dream alive! :)
Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel about Knuckles Chaotix, ;) lol. The game is definitely gimmicky and a proper Sonic 4 would have been much better. Still, I like it for what it tried to do. Having both systems, I favor the 32x over the Jaguar. The Jag is one of those systems that I had buyer's remorse after getting it.
At least if you owned a 32X then you also had a MD/Genesis with its fantastic games library. If you owned a Jaguar then, well, you owned a Jaguar and you have my commiserations.
I will prefer doom on the jaguar but that’s it,BUT atari tried hard to compeat against both nintendo and sega by coming with similar games for their 64bit system.
it's graphics are def better for sure. But... no music. that's unforgivable. Still I always saw Doom as a PC game. Even tho I had a Genesis and 32x and wanted a Jag, That's how I played it on a good old 386 SX. The SX stands for Sucks.
That was an oversight on the Chuck Rock 32X port I guess, cause the Sega CD version you could attack on both sides. For Doom the 32X port was based on the Jag code and was a really quick and dirty port. Doom Resurrection shows what the system is capable of. It's not a hack, as it doesn't use the original 32X code. It's a total re-port... and in addition to being fullscreen, it supports higher resolution, and runs faster. Actually every single aspect is improved. Even the controls. You can also use the Sega CD in conjunction to get CD audio. You really need to play it side by side although I understand why you didn't include it here.
The original Mega CD version is the only version of BC Racers where you can attack on both sides. This is missing somehow in the later conversions, that is, not only on the 32X version but also on the 3DO and PC versions.
It's funny, when you lived through it all of those 3D games were jaw dropping at the time but when I look now I think the 2D games of the era looked so much better. For instance MK2 and SF2 to me look way way better than Virtua Fighter and I would def rather play them today. I also think the Jaguar 2D soccer game looked way better than the 3D Fifa Soccer. But back then I thought the 3D games looked more amazing mostly because it was new and blew my mind that a game could do that.
I love the Genesis / Megadrive to death but Sega blew it back then for not including any kind of sprite scaling into their hardware considering they were an arcade behemoth back in the day! I mean the Atari Lynx had hardware scaling! The limited color palette is also an issue. Just 128 on screen colors instead of the anemic 64 would work wonders. Ah Sega....
@@GregsGameRoomI don’t think that the VDP came of the shelf. The genesis used bitplanes which are harder to scale than chunky. Stupid designers blindly coping some concept from early CAD workstation.
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt it's the other way around. Genesis used chunky pixels and SNES used bitplane, as did the Jaguar. Planer graphics save memory, giving you more colour for the ram and bus bandwidth but at the cost of slower performance and complexity.
@@iwanttocomplain Jaguar totally not uses bitplanes like Atari Falcon or ST. Genesis and SNES use tiles, which nobody modified. PcEngine has some weird internal tile format. I would not even call it bitplanes anymore. I mean, on the Jaguar I mostly care about 16 bpp, but please check Object Processor and Address Generator and how phrases pack local pixels. No 3 bpp or 5 or 7 available on Jaguar. Checkout Mortal Kombat how all sprites are reduced to 15 colors.
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt I'm getting conflicting reports on whether or not the Atari ST is planar or chunky pixel. But I have one table stating the Atari ST is planar and the Jaguar is chunky pixels. I assumed the Jaguar is planar because it has a blitter co-pro which I thought was to compensate for slower planar graphics. The SNES port of Dungeon Master includes a co-pro to convert the original Atari ST version's graphics from packed/chunky pixels into planar graphics.
I had a Jaguar, my Mom ordered it long distance from New York... that was a lame Christmas, but it was my fault, I asked for it. I only ever had like 2 or 3 games for it. I probably would have been happier with the 32X. Oh well.
@@GregsGameRoom Yeah. I had the Sega CD and was completely underwhelmed, so that's prolly why I was attracted to "Ooooh 64 bits!" I regained my senses however, and went on to have great fun with both the Saturn and the Dreamcast. ☺
Not in the sense of a Zelda/Phantasy Star style RPG, there is Towers 2,which is more of a Dungeon Master style affair, but it's another area in which the Jaguar sadly lacks titles.
Metal Head - I really dislike when games try to make levels look larger than they are by putting buildings as a backdrop. Personally, I'd rather just have fog. While short draw distances suck, I'd rather have nothing there rather than a drawing of buildings that sticks out like a sore thumb. I disliked this trick in the Driver games on the PS1 as well.
Fever Pitch Soccer is also on the MD/Genesis (Head On Soccer in the US), so it is technically playable on the 32X, but the Jaguar version is a bit nicer.
I'm here to stick up for BC Racers. Here's the thing. The 32X game is running too fast on emulation (or at least Fusion) so it's too hard. The Sega CD version is the one to play because it's the right speed, even though the frame rate is poor. The Sega CD version still manages to be fun because you can win quite easily, unlike the 32X version. One other thing people miss about BC Racers when comparing it to Atari Carts or Mario Kart is that BC Racers has alot of trackside object that are all scaling. In the other two games, scenery is only sprite swapping and very little of it. Giving BC Racers tracks alot more character. I admit BC Racers is a bit shallow but as a short burst of fun, I think it's the better cart racer.
I've heard the Sega CD version of the 32X game that you compared to atari karts, well that the Sega CD version is the better version, and allows punching to the left
We can discuss the ethical merits of emulation piracy, but I happen to think when you don't provide a market for a product that can be infinitely replicated, where if you wanted to buy these games you aren't compensating the studio, you're essentially forcing fans to pirate. But it was Virtua Racing for SEGA Saturn that, after having rented Virtua Racing for Genesis many times back in the day, the rom made me feel like I was stealing something, because it has so many features compared to what I was used to on the Genesis version.
I remember when Primal Rage first came out in arcades. I use to love fighting games back then. Not so much now in my 40s but even back then Primal Rage wasn't as good to me compared to Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and any Neo Geo fighting games. It was cool to see a farting gorilla though lol.
I actually really want a Jaguar; Ive played a lot of the games on an emulator with my Saturn controller, but only the cartridge games (which seems to be most of them); theres not really a working emulator for the CD games. I actually enjoy Zool 2. I like it better than Knuckles Chaotix. Knuckles Chaotix would've been great if they added ENEMIES in the game lol; there's literally like 1 or 2 enemies in each level; and those levels are massive; it's like just running through a beautiful, but just empty Sonic world with another character awkwardly, and quite literally attached at the hip lol What are some high recommendations for the Jaguar / Jaguar CD?
ATD openly admit they were well in over their heads with Blue Lightning on the Jaguar CD and had little idea what they were doing. Atari knew it would get slaughtered at review, but had so few Jag CD titles ready they went ahead and released it 🙄
It seems for the Jaguar you didn't get to include a bunch of the titles that either are distinctive or well liked like Tempest 2000 vs ??? on the 32X what is like Tempest 2000 on the 32X? Cybermorph and Battlemorph I don't think you included in this video the penguin game on the Jaguar, what is like it on the 32X? Dino dudes or the humans, the 32X doesn't have a comparison other than doom (which the Jaguar obviously has), what game does the 32X have like Alien vs Predator
Imagitec Design really screwed up Pitfall Mayan Adventure on Jaguar, extra colour depth, yes, but taking a 60 fps Genesis title put it on 64-bit architecture, designed with 2D in mind and have it running at 30 fps.. WTF???
Pitfall 32x might be just a bit worse. It was such a lazy port that the backgrounds of the Genesis game are still rendered before being overlaid by the higher color 32x backgrounds. I'm pretty sure most of the Genesis version's assets are still in the ROM.
Epic compare , blast processing dual core cpu of 32x vs blast dual core graphics 64bit bus chips of atari jaguar, who win ,? No one but i love Pitfall of 32x , but atari jaguar was colorfull
The error Sega made, was not releasing the 32x for the price they did ... 32x was worth the price as hardware itself. The prove of that is the fact that the first 6 months after the release it sold incredibly good . The real 2 big mistake Sega did, was as first to give credit to the Theory of Sega of America at the time, which was considering interactive film as the future of the gaming (🤮🤮🤮), the second was to release the Sega Saturn in 1994 instead of 1996 or even 1997. 32x in less than 2 years since his release, had far more killer applications than Sega Saturn in the same amount of time. Virtua Racing Deluxe, did on 32x , what Daytona USA didn't on Sega Saturn. Virtua Racing Deluxe, in the 3 class of cars you can choose, include the "Stock cars" , and handling of those cars, was much more similar to the handling of the cars of Daytona USA coin op, than the cars of all the conversion those game had on Sega Saturn; not much people ever mentioned that when talking about Virtua Racing Deluxe, and that is disappointing me. 32X also had the conversion of Virtua Fighter, which had better gameplay than the version for Sega Saturn. But also gems of games like Chaotiks, which was ( at least for my opinion) the best Sonic Spin off ever exist. Star Wars Arcade, was also a miracle of program development specially if compared with games like "Starfox 64" ... The 32x itself had the possibility to give at least 4 years of long life to Sega Genesis, what fucked it up, it was the Sega management. If Sega Saturn was going to be released 2/3 years later, also had more probabilities to challenge Sony on the market.
With Doom you are comparing famously one of the worst ports to one of the best. But, I gotta say solid measured reviews. The way Sega dropped the ball on 32x still makes me a little bitter.
As bad as Checkered Flag was I actually got some enjoyment out of it. Enough to beat the game. Also it has awful AI too. Virtra Racing Deluxe is my favorite game on the 32x and with that I obviously choose VRD too. I heard there is a hack for Checkered Flag that fixes some of the problems with it. If only I could find a physical copy that be great. Id really like to play that game with the correct improvements. It could've been so much more.
C. F was the coders very first game, Rebellion were never the people to give a polygon 3D Racing game to, they had absolutely zero experience in this field of gaming.
@@dad7275 Rob Dibley's first ever game, the Kingsley Brothers themselves have stated they tried various methods, regarding the steering just couldn't nail it down. They also described the game as a contractal affair.. Atari paid for a plain, polygon racing game and that's what Rebellion delivered. They also hinted Atari wouldn't let them have full control over the quality side, being more concerned about getting the game out on the shelf, so they had as many titles available for the Xmas period.
the Jaguar is obviously more powerful but Sega definitely had better games. Also it seems that the 32X is handicapped by its architecture. Part of its graphics had to go through the megadrive.
You're playing Knuckles Chaotix wrong. First of all, the rubber band mechanic was to facilitate 2-player, but if you play it single player, you're supposed to use the hold button to sling shot off of your partner. While you do have a spindash, it's not very good in Chaotix, and you should avoid using it. You can also carry your partner, and there's a button that makes your partner come to your position. You didn't use any of these mechanics, so no wonder you didn't like the game.
jaguar loses automatically due to the 32X having Afterburner, Space Harrier (both at 30 fps but still), Virtua Fighter and Racer.. thats it .... end of the argument.. those 4 games are worth more than the ENTIRE jaguar library.. but to compare further.. there is Metal Head which i think is better than Iron Soldier but hey thats just opinions, Knuckles Chaotix and all its flaws is better than every single platformer on jag but Rayman (even though i hate rayman period, its pretty, but thats it) but even better than all of them is Tempo from red, although the saturn sequel is better...supposedly atari had made a deal with sega due to an out of court settlement to get some of their games, and you can see an old document where they list what was available.. that was atari's only chance and they blew it.. i shouldnt argue with you jaguar apologists.. i hate everything you like.. i hated mortal kombat from the first time i played it when it first came out, it was never as good as japanese fighters, even crap like world heroes and fighters destiny played better..primal rage played even worse..well.. we'll just have to respectfully disagree.. but i still like watching any videos on games to see other peoples takes, even if i disagree.. so keep making your vids!!
I thought Knuckles Chaotix was pretty decent once you figure it out, though it might be Stockholm syndrome talking. At least back in the day I'd certainly take it over Zool, Bubbsy and Soccer Kid. Overall, both 32x and Jag got the short end of the 5th gen stick, as there were just SO few decent games for both systems.
I'd say the only platformer on the Jaguar which is better than Knuckles Chaotix is Rayman, and that was also going to be released on the 32X but sadly didn't. Those Jaguar rivals are games that could have been easily released on the Mega Drive (in fact, Soccer Kid has an unreleased Mega Drive version which still didn't see the light of day).
Such a Jag homer lol, Doom doesn't even have music on the Jag (!!) and you still picked it and made it sound like an advantage. Zool is better than Knuckles ?? 😂🙄
have you heard the original 32X music for doom if you have, then go to some spoony bard's channel and find his doom ost final fix for 32x video and hear what the 32x actually could've been capable of almost anytime I've heard Jaguar Doom and 32X, almost every time (maybe even everytime) Jag Doom has been praised, and 32X doom has been spoken poorly of
Nope, it wasn't. But it was worth it for Tempest 2000 and the CD player's Jeff Minter virtual light machine alone lol. Plus it looked cooler. Good luck getting a working version of that today tho. But I'm also a huge fan of Space Harrier and for a LOOONG time, 32x was the only way to play the arcade version at home, since nobody had/could find a Saturn

With competant programming, I bet all those 32X games could be ported to the Jaguar
Absolutely!
Glad someone enjoys Chaotix!
@@GregsGameRoom Thanks. There are more of us than you think :) Keep up the great work.
However, I must say about Knuckles Chaotix:
I've beaten that game in it's entirety at least 4 or 5 times. First thing is, like you said:
Once you get used to the mechanics, it does become 2nd nature.
But if you really learn how it works, it's pretty, very creatively fun to control; it feels really cool to be able to pull of all the different dual character mechanics tricks
(In fact I think it would awesome to add some bonus stages in other Sonic games that play like this)
However, there's 1 major problem, that has nothing to do with the controls:
Once you master the controls and are ready for some challenge.. there is none.
Virtually NO enemies, no real obstacles or challenges or anything.
Many levels, in fact, most of the levels: literally have only 1 to 2 enemies on the entire level; and those levels are massive!
The most I've ever seen is 3.. mayyyybe 4 on one level..
It's like running through an absolutely beautiful Sonic world (the graphics are so colorful and just fantastic; with equally amazing music),
but a very EMPTY, beautiful Sonic world.
I really wish they would have populated those levels in Chaotix with enemies and challenges;
It would have been such a great game.
But as it is: it just feels incomplete and empty
I would love to see a fully fleshed out sequal that adds these missing essential elements; but that will probably never happen, since the original didn't sell well and wasn't recieved very well critically; which, in my opinion, is because of the emptiness of the game; not the fault of the controls as many would have you believe.
That's just my 10 cents though
Saga was a powerhouse..
The jaguar there is no saving that system
I collect retro consoles. So I have both of these, my Jaguar CD still works, though I very rarely use it. Great video. I love these comparison videos.
Thanks! Take care of that JagCD!
I love comparison vids of the consoles and games around this era, even between segas own 32x mega cd etc. Thanks for this. New subscriber
if you add the mega cd library to the 32X it massacres the jaguar.. the two lunar games, shining force cd, snatcher, space adventure cobra, popful mail, dark wizard, robo aleste, sol feace i could go on and on.. its not even a fair fight.. hell including the japanese only games makes it even better, stuff like Shin Megami Tensei, an Urusei Yatsura game, and a fucking Shadowrun game made by Compile...oof thats some good shit..
Thanks!
I had both consoles. I liked both just fine. Simply, not enough good games released was the problem.
Doom on Jag is a masterpiece, however the 32x Doom Resurrection is by far the best way to play doom on a 32bit console. Imo even better then the psx version.
Virtua Racing Deluxe on 32X is the only reason I still own a 32X - it is a fantastic port and has a very similar feel to the coin-op version!
Yeah it’s great!
I'll go for the Atari Jaguar because I really like that console.
You know what's good about the jaguar if you get mad you can break somebody's face with a controller😂
Excellent video Greg... and bonus points for featuring two consoles I never we'd see in the same video. 👍
Seemed like a no-brainer to match these two up. They were always being compared in the mags!
Cheers!
Sega Japan wanted nothing to do with the 32X add-on. That thing was 100% American made, and it showed....😊
Both have some great games!
I just found out about the proposed "64 bit" add on for Saturn the other day, the "64x". Now that would have been amazing... lol
Apparently shown at the 1995 E3 show alongside the Jaguar/Saturn and PS1 versions..
Only visual differences being the more limited colour pallete..
TH-cam has recommended your channel recently. Been watching a few of your comparison videos, and I loved them. They are fair and to the point.
Thank you!
Where are the rest of the 64 bits
😂
It could have been the best version but it was rushed and Sega cheaped out on the cart size.
Iohn Carmack on 32X vs Jaguar Doom:
Atari shipped the jaguar with a fairly serious hardware bug: the
risc chips cannot reliably execute code unless it lies in the on-chip
caches, which are only 4k and 8k in size.
You can break your program up into a lot of overlays, but it is a big
time consuming hassle, so virtually all jaguar games are going to
execute the majority of their code on the 68k, which is only about
one tenth the speed of the risc chips.
The jag has lots of speed in it, you just need to sweat a bit to get
at it. In contrast, the Sega 32X is less powerful, but very easy to
get the speed (they have a GCC compiler for the SH2 chips). DOOM
will be showing up on both the Jag and the 32X. The jag version will
be a bit better, but it will have over twice the man-hours put into
it.
I am just now testing a dynamic overlay scheme that automatically
caches position independant code on the local ram. It will be slower
than hand-overlaying everything, but still several times faster than
running on the 68k.
John Carmack
I love Virtua Racing on the 32X and Shadow Squadron is really fun. I did own a Jaguar with the CD attachment and really liked the system. It had some really good games and some stinkers. Overall, I would go with the Jaguar but both systems are worth owning.
A 32-bit add-on for the Jaguar. The add-on we didn't know we needed.
I should have tried plugging the 32X into it!
Cool video! I never owned a Genesis/ 32X but I do love the look & feel of that era. Skyhammer and Phase Zero might have been better comparisons to 32X tank/mech games though. Keep the retro dream alive! :)
Hey Carl!
thanks a lot im learning the Jag with the BigPEmu emulator, i wasnt even born back then lol
IMHO it all comes down to the classics: Rayman+Doom vs. Mortal Kombat 2+Virtua Racing. Now choose!
These jaguar lovers are ridiculous😊 There really is no redeeming quality about that system😂
It probably ranks just above Sonic ‘06.
Doom is amazing.
it's graphics are def better for sure. But... no music. that's unforgivable. Still I always saw Doom as a PC game. Even tho I had a Genesis and 32x and wanted a Jag, That's how I played it on a good old 386 SX. The SX stands for Sucks.
@@provisionalhypothesisconsidering how badly the 32x version mutilated the soundtrack, I’d even give the Jaguar the upper hand on audio as well.
@@WeskerSega that's insane
Ah Sega....
Sega was being cheap using off the shelf parts. The strategy worked though.
Why not wolfenstien jag vs chilly willy 32x wolf ?
I had a Jaguar, my Mom ordered it long distance from New York... that was a lame Christmas, but it was my fault, I asked for it. I only ever had like 2 or 3 games for it. I probably would have been happier with the 32X. Oh well.
Neither system set the world on fire…
@@GregsGameRoom Yeah. I had the Sega CD and was completely underwhelmed, so that's prolly why I was attracted to "Ooooh 64 bits!" I regained my senses however, and went on to have great fun with both the Saturn and the Dreamcast. ☺
I used to have Soccer Kid on the 3DO and I did enjoy playing that game.
It's funny because it seems that the only games that the jaguar is good at none of these games I would ever Play😂
Are there any RPGs on the Jaguar / Jaguar CD?
Also, what are some recommended games in general? Like, what are the must-plays?
Not in the sense of a Zelda/Phantasy Star style RPG, there is Towers 2,which is more of a Dungeon Master style affair, but it's another area in which the Jaguar sadly lacks titles.
Good video thanks!
Back then, I would've felt sorry for anyone who wasted their money on anything that wasn't a SNES or Genesis.
You mean which was a bigger pos, 32x or the jag.
I think there were music licensing issues with the Jaguar version of doom
Just look at the libraries of the games For each of the systems Case closed😊
Can you do a side-by-side of Doom Resurrection 2.0 on 32x vs Doom Jaguar?
I've heard the Sega CD version of the 32X game that you compared to atari karts, well that the Sega CD version is the better version, and allows punching to the left
Where is this hack to add music to the Jag version of Doom?
Most of these games don't say much because they suck😂
i love versus videos thx.
Great video but can't compare a add on to a official system plus Jaguar was more powerful and better graphics and sounds Sega just had better games
Sega should have milked the 32X until the Dreamcast. Not a bad add on, and had potential.
It’s really different from other fighting games.
I actually really want a Jaguar;
Ive played a lot of the games on an emulator with my Saturn controller, but only the cartridge games (which seems to be most of them); theres not really a working emulator for the CD games.
I actually enjoy Zool 2.
I like it better than Knuckles Chaotix.
Knuckles Chaotix would've been great if they added ENEMIES in the game lol; there's literally like 1 or 2 enemies in each level; and those levels are massive; it's like just running through a beautiful, but just empty Sonic world with another character awkwardly, and quite literally attached at the hip lol
What are some high recommendations for the Jaguar / Jaguar CD?
How is Metal Head more like a first-person shooter while Mech Warrior is "more like a mech game", when they both use the same perspective?
DO THE MATH!!!
64+32+32+32+16
32 bit chip + 32 bit chip == 64 bits !!! LOL. It was such dishonest marketing honestly. But then Sega did the same thing with "Blast processing" lol.
ATD openly admit they were well in over their heads with Blue Lightning on the Jaguar CD and had little idea what they were doing.
Atari knew it would get slaughtered at review, but had so few Jag CD titles ready they went ahead and released it 🙄
Primal Rage needs a modern reboot.
It seems for the Jaguar you didn't get to include a bunch of the titles that either are distinctive or well liked
like Tempest 2000 vs ??? on the 32X
what is like Tempest 2000 on the 32X?
Cybermorph and Battlemorph I don't think you included in this video
the penguin game on the Jaguar, what is like it on the 32X?
Dino dudes or the humans, the 32X doesn't have a comparison
other than doom (which the Jaguar obviously has), what game does the 32X have like Alien vs Predator
All these games must Remake 60fps 😮
What, no Kolibri vs Trevor McFur? :P
I've heard people say positive things about Kolibri
and Gregsgameroom's review of Trevor McFur did not seem to be positive
With Doom you are comparing famously one of the worst ports to one of the best. But, I gotta say solid measured reviews.
The way Sega dropped the ball on 32x still makes me a little bitter.
The 32X port actually isn't all that bad. The 3DO, SNES, and Saturn ports are way worse.
I loved my 32X, I think retro gamers are too harsh on the system which actually has some decent games.
You can play the hack with the BigPEmu.
@@GregsGameRoom did you play it? Did it help? Thanks.
C. F was the coders very first game, Rebellion were never the people to give a polygon 3D Racing game to, they had absolutely zero experience in this field of gaming.
@@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 didn't know that. That would explain alot.
I'm surprised the 32X actually has at least 33 games.
Zool lol. What a joke
Games are NEVER a good way to compare the potential of systems unless BOTH versions are expertly developed (which is never the case here).
I still have my 2 Jagwaaaaars
Nothing to compare here ... Jaguar is far superior and better.
32x because you can play genesis games on it.
Jaguar is superior, 64>32. Do the math
I love the truth. Both were not that great. Both had some amazing ports and games.
I don't understand Atari. They could have been King.
And : the most bad games was often available for any platform 😂 pitfall, primal rage , rayman …
jaguar loses automatically due to the 32X having Afterburner, Space Harrier (both at 30 fps but still), Virtua Fighter and Racer.. thats it .... end of the argument.. those 4 games are worth more than the ENTIRE jaguar library.. but to compare further.. there is Metal Head which i think is better than Iron Soldier but hey thats just opinions, Knuckles Chaotix and all its flaws is better than every single platformer on jag but Rayman (even though i hate rayman period, its pretty, but thats it) but even better than all of them is Tempo from red, although the saturn sequel is better...supposedly atari had made a deal with sega due to an out of court settlement to get some of their games, and you can see an old document where they list what was available.. that was atari's only chance and they blew it.. i shouldnt argue with you jaguar apologists.. i hate everything you like.. i hated mortal kombat from the first time i played it when it first came out, it was never as good as japanese fighters, even crap like world heroes and fighters destiny played better..primal rage played even worse..well.. we'll just have to respectfully disagree.. but i still like watching any videos on games to see other peoples takes, even if i disagree.. so keep making your vids!!
LOL, interesting manner of complement…
@@GregsGameRoom sorry.. im an old bastard..and you do good work either way
Kasumi Ninja beats Mortal Kombat any day.
Not a soccer fan in the slightest? Disappointing, but at least the video was quality.
Sega
I thought Knuckles Chaotix was pretty decent once you figure it out, though it might be Stockholm syndrome talking. At least back in the day I'd certainly take it over Zool, Bubbsy and Soccer Kid.
Overall, both 32x and Jag got the short end of the 5th gen stick, as there were just SO few decent games for both systems.
LOL, “Stockholm syndrome.”
Sega 32X wins by being an iconic failure
Such a Jag homer lol, Doom doesn't even have music on the Jag (!!) and you still picked it and made it sound like an advantage. Zool is better than Knuckles ?? 😂🙄
So scratchy 32X music trumps fullscreen, more stages, monsters that fight each other, and networked multiplayer? Ok.
have you heard the original 32X music for doom
if you have, then go to some spoony bard's channel and find his doom ost final fix for 32x video and hear what the 32x actually could've been capable of
almost anytime I've heard Jaguar Doom and 32X, almost every time (maybe even everytime) Jag Doom has been praised, and 32X doom has been spoken poorly of
So the jaguar was not even as good as the 32x ? 😳
And not only because most games on it was crap 😂
Nope, it wasn't. But it was worth it for Tempest 2000 and the CD player's Jeff Minter virtual light machine alone lol. Plus it looked cooler. Good luck getting a working version of that today tho. But I'm also a huge fan of Space Harrier and for a LOOONG time, 32x was the only way to play the arcade version at home, since nobody had/could find a Saturn
@@provisionalhypothesis aha ok , i was more into nintendo but i try many games on them and i did not really found something for me on the jaguar 😋 so i not need a working one 👍🏻
