I really should be watching this channel, huh? Okay, you've been watched! This is some good, solid classic game coverage, and your voice is clear and professional, without annoying TH-cam gimmicks or overblown personas.
Nice to see someone else out there appreciating these hidden gems. I, too, loved the Sega Genesis for its edginess with their games. I owned Haunting: Starring Polterguy and it is still to this day one of my favorite Sega Genesis games. Still haven't seen any other game like it. I used to rent Dinosaurs For Hire a alot too, that game was my first run and gun game experience. So it technically was my first "Contra" so i have a fond appreciation for that game as well.
I grew up with B.O.B on the SNES. We got it from a rental place back in the 90's. That game has a ton of levels! I remember thinking it just went on forever as a kid.
I don't know why, but I just knew I'd have at least one game on this list. I've got two! LOL. Thanks for playing Haunting and BOB. You know, towards the end of BOB dev I said, "we really don't have enough content for the number of levels. We should cut the number of levels in half and just have it be shorter, but packed." Back then, you couldn't convince producers & sales/marketing that "less is more", so... it is what it is... Thanks for the vid!
Great picks. Although as someone who actually owns and has owned B.O.B since the old days and has played it many times during my youth, I have to correct that his "antennae fingers" are actually just the fingers of his other hand. Really enjoyed Haunting back in the day too as a rental.
The first time I played B.O.B was on the SNES when I was a kid and It's one of those games that always stuck with me. I always came back to it to try to get farther without dying and the graphics also really appealed to me. I usually reset the game once I die because going through those later levels with just the pea shooter is brutal.
Very very solid list of dramatically underrated Megadrive games. I played B.O.B. only on Super Nes but it was great, and it seems to be extremely similar. Haunting is certainly in the Top 10 most underrated games on the Megadrive. High Seas Havoc is great but I find it very hard!
I had Haunting as a kid and I loved it, I thought then it was extremely underrated but thats just how things were in the 90s. I also loved General Chaos, Toejam & Earl, and Cyborg Justice to name a few.
Good picks, as these are actually under the radar type of games rather than the more common titles chosen for a lot of hidden gems lists out there. I never really thought of the Genesis as a successor to the Turbografx-16, being that they came out in the USA within a month of each other it was more like having to choose between them, though eventually I got both by trading a few Genesis games to a friend for his Turbografx system (with games) which he no longer wanted. The Turbografx made a good impression on me from the start but as a Sega Master System owner there was no way that I was getting anything other than the Genesis first at launch, as Sega had been hyping it up ahead of time first on the Sega phone line and then in television ads. More obscure winners (earlier games) of the top of my head include Wings of Wor, Whip Rush, and Master of Monsters.
I remember seeing Haunting in stores as a young lad and always being tempted to buy it, but never actually did. Looks amusing at least. Somewhat obscure games (maybe?) that I did own and enjoy were Blades of Vengeance, Puggsy, Flink.
I just bought Rolling Thunder 2 and 3 for my Genesis off ebay. Without the internet I didnt even know those games existed in the early 90's. Both games are great👍
Polterguy! I sold that one a long time ago and now regret it. Looks like I’m going to have to get it again. There’s a few others you’ve intrigued me with too. I really loved this one. Definitely, we’ll need another one. 💜🙏🔥🚀
Interesting. I never heard of Dinosaurs for Hire. That one must've slipped off my radar. Looks cool, though. I had my original Sega Genesis when I was about 16 at the time and thought that I had played everything on the system.
Splatter house 3 was my game...scared as hell but still playing under my blanket especially when the time ran out and the worse ending happened. Jennifer transformed face before the lights went out. Fastest night I've ever fallen asleep under a lot of blankets 😂
Thanks for showing BOB. I adore run n guns and thought I knew all of them on the Genesis. Looks pretty fun, have to try it out sometime. Thanks for another quality video, happy to see your channel is gaining some traction. Dont be afraid to branch out a bit like you already have been. I love seeing your turbo videos, but frankly I'll watch anything you make so if you want to talk about other things like Genesis etc, go for it.
B.O.B is pretty fun but is way more punishing than it needs to be which makes trying to get through it a pain. That dang level timer mixed with maze level design is rough.
Burning Force, Trampoline Terror, Dragon's Fury, Flashback The Quest For Identity, Growl, Midnight Resistance, Skitchin', Taz in Escape From Mars, Toy Story, there's a lot of good stuff.
I love haunting starring polterguy it's such a unique and hilarious game those electronic arts cartridges sure stood out they used to be such an awsome company
Quite the list my friend! Polterguy is of course gonna draw people in, nice to see B.OB. Get some love! I think I covered high seas before but not sure, definitely played it though. Nice vid as always my friend! ❤️🎮
Going to Try Devilish never seen that before, but definitely fits with the genesis house style.. One I never hear mentioned is Granada. Its an overhead tank game with a lot of variety especially in the bosses.
@@Johnnygrafx I'm not 100% but I think the SNES is the version I played but from what I can tell other than some slight graphics and sound differences they're pretty much the same.
Nice, some good choices, for a less known western RPG try The Faery Tale Adventure, was originally a computer game converted to Megadrive, and is pretty unique. Good stuff keep it up.
The problem making these lists is that Genesis had so MANY hidden gems. A few more I haven’t seen on the comments: 1. Jewel Master: awesome castlevania style game with a nifty magic system where you combine rings to make new spells. 2. Gauntlet IV: THE best home version of Gauntlet even now. Full arcade perfect mode plus an rpg mode along with the greatest sound track in the whole library 3. Arcus Odyssey: Isometric Gauntlet with big levels and lots of enemies. Super fun. 4. Target Earth: aka Assault Suit Leynos. Best mech game of the era. Hard as balls though. 5. Master of Monsters: take two parts Archon and combine with Warsong. I can’t tell you how many hours long car/train/plain trips this has eaten up over the years. 6. Gemfire: romance of the three kingdoms only with magic and dragons. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Sega of America made games like Dinosaurs for Hire, Eternal Champions, X-men didn't work with the Genesis's color pallet very well. They used such an excessive amount of color dithering for more than just about any other Genesis game. It's as if they're art team worked with a larger color pallet then what Genesis had and used a dither tool instead of working with the Genesis color palette directly.
So, here are my actual thoughts on this that also fit perfectly with most of the examples here too: I don't actually like saying bad things about Genesis, unless it's in response to some Genesis clown troll attacking another system randomly and usually in some completely disingenuous way, but I just can't get into so many of the recommended games on the system because of the dull and/or garish colours due to the system's combo of a relatively small amount of colours on-screen and a relatively small colour gamut to work with, the overuse of dithering in a lot of the shading, and the use of dithering again to fake transparency in most cases. As someone who's a bit superficial in terms of how nice things look, this is a real sticking point for me. Like that very first Dinosaur games is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. I just find that game ugly. And, just as I wouldn't want to date someone I think is ugly, I'm really not a huge fan of playing games I think are ugly. :-o Now, I know it's actually possible to make pretty games on the system if you know how to work around the limitations there, but it's just that so many of these games didn't. I'm just calling it literally as I see it personally here. And, don't get me wrong here, as I also know the system has many of its own strengths and advantages of the other competing systems of the time, but the things I mentioned above really are harder for me to overcome than most of the stuff people like to point out on the other consoles to be honest. It just is what it is I guess.
Yeah, I mean, Dinosaurs FH definitely over-did it with the dithering, as many other genesis games did. Valid point. I would just say though that the inherent fuzziness of CRT screens at the time blended all that together, and it wasn't as off-putting as it is on modern screens now. So I tend to cut the genesis some slack on that ya know

back then I did purchased Bob used from a game store and I hate it, it was ridiculously difficult and dragged on forever like if it has no end. I stomach through 30 levels and I saw what appears to be a fake ending of bob find a ship to escape until it ran out of gas or something halfway while he was complaining and whining about the last place he escaped and land into another more levels. after that happens I immediately ejected the cartridge violently off of my sega genesis without turning off the console first and throw it into the shelf then plugged another game to play, the next day I went back to the gaming store and exchanged bob with another game I forgot what it was.
How the heck is it possible that Dinosaurs for hire failed!? Anthro dinosaurs toting heavy weapons will never NOT be cool! Also, is it just me or does Havoc bear an uncanny resemblance to Rotor the Walrus from SatAM Sonic?
