I never owned either system, and as an Atari lover it’s hard to admit that the SNES was probably a better system overall. I think Atari just didn’t know what to do with consoles starting with the 5200. If Atari had teamed up with another company like Sega or Sony, imagine the possibilities!

    • @KrunchyTheClown78

During the 7800 days, Atari was more focused on the computer market, when they should have been focused on the console market, and when it was clear they were gonna get stomped in the computer market, they tried to switch gears, but it was too late. Clearly they should never have abandoned the console market that they started with the 2600.

About Flashback, well, I know that the opening sequence on the SNES version runs pretty slow, but on the Jaguar version, it runs too fast for some reason. Was surprised that you didn’t mention it yet.
And for Double Dragon V, I heard that there’s a prototype ROM of the Jaguar version existed somewhere online, and it was supposed to have the same exact features as the 16-bit versions, although it is in a very early stage and doesn’t have any sound, but it seems that someone at Telegames had to just rush it out and remove them for no good reason, making them think that the current result of the game is the final product when it doesn’t look like it. Shame on them.

Also, I always feel a bit of shame for not supporting the Jaguar more, because as a huge fan of the original atari system back in the day and also ownng an Atari ST at the time of the Jaguar's release I had really high hopes for the system. Sadly though the lack of Software support really killed any chances the system stood against the looming 32 bit console releases. Such a shame as it was obviously a very capable machine in the right hands, but so few titles showed off it's strengths and most releases were ports of 16-bit titles available elsewhere.

They just werent my thing. Just like Contra. I'm one of the few people who was born in the 80s and absolutely despise contra lol. Anyway, I did like Battle toads as a kid, but briefly Obviously I didn't get too far because it's way too difficult. And I remember when those games came out with the merger between those two. About that time I had already lost interest. I said to myself, what's the point? Lol. It's like if you were to mix dark souls and Rayman. Lol. I like Rayman kinda, but I hate dark souls. Both are extremely difficult. Lol. So yeah I know that's a bad comparison but, I think you get my point. You would need to be a little creative with some of them for example, the Vectrex did not get an official Asteroids port to compare, but it's pack in title Mine Storm is basically an Asteroids clone and there are a few other games like that where they did not get official licenses. Also you've need to include some homebews, such as the homebrew Battlezone port that got an impressive port to the Atari 2600 and was one it's is most powerful system pushing games.

One match-up worth considering: Ultra Vortek vs. Killer Instinct. Also worth noting that SNES Cannon Fodder supports the mouse. Also, to be pedantic, Out of This World is more of a spiritual predecessor than a sequel to Flashback. Truth is, Out of This World did have a proper sequel on the Sega CD called Heart of the Alien. The NTSC version of Sensible Soccer for the Jag plays too fast. It's essentially the same game but it plays so fast that it makes games against the computer less fun. Not bad but much better when you're going head-to-head. And speaking of head-to-head, the Jag port of NBA Jam supports the multitap. Yeah, the SNES version supports it too, but it's worth mentioning because Jag multitap games are so rare. Great video though! The best console version of Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure may be the Genesis (and/or Sega CD) version. Buttery smooth frame rate and control that's better than either the SNES or the Jag.

@14:32 Agreed. SNES Doom is a real achievement considering the hardware, and the map layouts are generally much more faithful to the PC originals than those in Jaguar Doom. And SNES in-level music is quite good versus Jaguar's none. But beyond that, the Jag version is an overall better experience: Faster, smoother, more fun. Also, both games had multiplayer, but neither was much good. SNES was extremely simplistic, and Jag multiplayer crashed frequently.

The sad part of the Jaguar is that they tried to label it a 64-bit system and tried to compete with the Playstation, which it couldn't. If they had just marketed it as a 32 bit machine and set it's sites on being "better than the SNES" I think they would have gotten better results. Over promise, under perform. I was cheering for them to succeed though. More competition is a good thing in the gaming market.

Even after I got the Jag and then the Playstation, people rented time on the 3DO more than anything. The Jag was just overhyped and underpowered for how they talked it up. Oh the archimedes is surprisingly fast, lets add some custom graphics chip and => 3do. Atari: Let's use the CPU from the original ST and clock it slightly higher?
Ah the Amiga has a blitter for wireframe, so let's improve on that and add filled vectors (flat shading), but make it not reach 60 fps in Club Driving. Did Atari not bring Hard'Drivin into the arcades??

Jaguar came way before Playstation (almost two years in US, and that was a lot back in the day 😁). Problem was no one knew how to program it (complex machine, almost no documentation from Atari) . Thus, they reduced it to 16-bit machine, so games do not look much better than SNES or Mega Drive (Genesis). By the time people figured it out it was already too late. Nevertheless, some of the games (alien vs Predator comes to mind) were close in looks to what PS1 could offer.

Nice video, I always love the concept of the Jaguar and I feel it's a console that could have had success if they had put far more effort on getting proper dev tools and push developers to properly utilize it's hardware in most games. In many ports, devs were simply being lazy and only utilizing the high clocked Motorola chip (Which is similar to the one of the genesis)...
They also lacked a lot of ports that would have made the console far more desirable like Street Fighter2 (turbo, super or what not), MK2, MK3...
Just like the overpriced 3do and poor decision sega usa/japan infighting 32X... the hardware was there and capable, but the developer time and effort was a huge fail.
11:40 Canon fodder, the enemy groans sound a lot like the original command and conquer infantry death groans.

I like how Amiga does Audio. Why did Atari make it easy to port game logic when C compilers exist, but make it difficult to port music? So Jerry has cache. So I imagine that a few samples of each voice reside there. Bytes are freed up while samples are played. Every time a queue runs empty, the largest free region is filled with the next samples. Fast page mode wants bursts! We only need a clever algorithm so that we don’t need two reads between one output sample. And we better not read on full video lines.

I never owned an Atari system, but I really enjoyed my SNES a lot--even over the Sega Genesis(owned that, too, before I knew its flaws). The SG action and char audio was last gen or worse--which affects your gaming experience in a lot of games and you had to wait for a controller that had the functionality of the SNES controller.
But, the fact that the Jaguar doesn't blow the SNES away is mindblowing(even the Neo Geo blew away the SNES in almost every game and it didn't have 3D capability when the AJ did).

Regardless of Atari‘s contested “do the math” commercial campaign, I recall many supposedly impartial sources claiming that the Jaguar had enough combined compute power to give any “high end” PC of the era more than a run for its pixels. Unfortunately, as conveyed many times in this video, it was a nightmare for developers to program, meaning that for most multi platform titles already available on 16bit consoles, they probably used these existing versions as templates - leaving the vast majority of workloads to the Jaguar’s general purpose 68000 CPU - rather than code from scratch and find ways to effectively utilise the its extensive graphical capabilities, including heavily augmented sprite scaling, additional image enhancing techniques and hardware accelerated FX.
This critical shortfall, combined with a lack of support from major games companies and the comparatively limited space of its cartridge based media meant it stood very little chance against either the Saturn or PlayStation, both of which were newer machines with technical advantages and further benefitted from months of intense hype and prolific publicity before their eventual launch.
Games such as Alien’s Vs Predator (my reason for purchasing a Jag!), Tempest 2000, RayMan, NBA and the legendary port of Doom (which roundly humbled those of its contemporary rivals, 32x and 3DO) showed what was possible when the platform’s full potential was harnessed.
Then there were titles like Kasumi Ninja and which looked impressive but were poorly executed and felt unbearably sluggish to play.
The controller felt cumbersome and often gave my thumbs cramp, though the interchangeable button cards were an inspired innovation!

I re-read the Doom source code, and most of it is C which runs on 68k . Doom was originally written for 486 , so 68k was only targeted because the compiler could not compile calls out of JRISC.

The best screen capture of Atari Karts. The floor needs to scroll through a texture buffer because Atari don’t know tiles. Impressive that it fits into memory and can be updated on turns so fast. How is camera rotation triggered? Is there a rate limit? Scanlines far away don’t seem to be scaled down much. The linebuffer has a high resolution. Looking at F-zero, I had the feeling that near the horizon texture access is nearly random. But here it seems like Jaguar should have packed 2x2 px in a phrase and the blitter would hit 2 or 3 of these in a scanline. So a cached phrase would really speed up blitting. Why did Atari not optimize for this case? F-zero was out long before Jaguar!
Due to perspective, the next scanline hits totally different phrases. We race the beam. Worst case scanlines need to be fast.

Val D'Isere and Doom are the only games I've played on both consoles. The Jaguar versions wipe the floor with the SNES version.
Val D'Isere's track layouts were much more fair. The SNES version has too many instances where the track suddenly changes directions with no warning, even in early sections, which are supposed to be easier. Also, there's other riders on the slopes in the Jag version, but not on the SNES version.

The poor Jaguar got so stiffed. I think the hardware is actually pretty interesting and impressive for its time, even though it was kind of released at the wrong time, but by far its biggest problem was the company selling it. Atari didn't give developers enough support and just wanted to crap out software, not to mention failing to pay for achieved milestones (this is why Fight for Life was infamously released in a broken state). They cheaped out on everything, too.

    • @ArneChristianRosenfeldt
      @ArneChristianRosenfeldt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Why is it slower than 3do ? Why can it hardly match f-zero ? Why do even replacement controllers would have to use the dated electrical protocol? Just put a shift register in the controller and the Jaguar. Trigger read out. This needs to be slow for EMI and the cheap chip in the endangered controller. Interrupt DSP and present all buttons in a 32 bit register.

The raden game and shes equivalent. I swear i found roms that is a duplicate under a different name and only the ship looks different on snes however i may be thinking of another game. Snes has a duplicated game under different names some exactly the same but the ship and some with levels different a bit but same game. Maybe not this game though.
Also Jaguar version of the game has that giant status sidebar to get extra frames out of the game. Similar to Doom allowing shrinking of the screen. This means less pixels to animate for the game because the view port is shunk on jaguar.

When jaguar came out it was too expensive and not a true 64 bit console like n64. Couldn't compete with the Saturn or PlayStation. The problem was the cost and the companies knew less people was going to buy it because it was too expensive at the time so there was no heart or compitent programmers to make good games for it.
The games would reach a smaller audience. So there was not enough money to go into game development.
The later first true 64bit console before 64bit width pc processors and 64bit Windows. The N64 i am talking about did 2d bad. I had the n64 and mortal Kombat was better on PlayStation because the n64 2d sprite limitation.
However there is one awesome looking 2d game done with polygons that is a side scroller and looks great and playd at a solid framerate. Maybe 60fps if not 30fps. However they couldn't do it with sprites and i forgot the name but i either owned or rented it when younger.
