- Two bears ended up in a deadly fight in Spain's Cantabrian mountains, which are home to around 350 bears.
Video footage shows a female bear protecting her cub from a larger male before both fighting bears fall off a cliff ledge.

The female bear did survive and manage to reunited with her cub. However, she did eventually succumb to her injuries. The male died shortly after the fall the female took longer and her cub was taken by researchers/forest services.

So the behavior isn't getting selected against by this kind of incident. Either the adult male spreads the behavior or the cub will grow up to do the same thing.
You know that fall was bad when even a BEAR dont get up.
The bear's size was actually a contributing factor to its death. If a human were to fall off that ledge at the same time, their falling velocity would accelerate at the same rate, but their mass would be much lighter than the bear's, producing a weaker momentum that in turn results in a lesser impact force (per Newton's law on actions and equal opposing reactions). Put simply, the fall could be survivable by a human (though they'd be in deep trouble), but definitely not so for a bear or other large animal. And counterintuitively, a mouse would almost certainly be completely fine.
@@hautakleightontam771 I don't think a human could have survived that. the body fat and muscles that protected the bears were the reason they survived for some time after the fall. a human would most likely die instantly regardless of the angle and which part of their body they landed on due to not having those body fats, muscles, bones etc.

@malekat8539 the whole point is that males are much more expendable from a reproductive point. That's why hunters often prefer to kill males, it doesn't damage the long term population.

@@malekat8539 My point was that ONE male can impregnate many many females in the same season but, ONE female can only give birth to one batch of young at a time. Some females only have one offspring per pregnancy and added to that some mammals carry young for as long as 23 months before giving birth. Therefore, the loss of a breeding female of any mammalian species is far more serious than the loss of a male. It's basic maths and biology but, you can make it some weird political thing rather than basic facts if you want.

He had already seriously injured her and the cubs and she was desperate. The two remaining cubs also had injuries. The mamma found a cave to rest up with her cubs but when rangers went to check, all 3 were dead. Very sad for such a brave and courageous mamma bear.😢

You can see the moment at 1:15, when the male bear's head has a direct hit on the ground, and appears to have broken his neck.
That bear made the math and decided conclussivelly and without a shadow of a doubt that fighting on the edge of a lethal drop was, in fact, not a bad idea and could not go wrong in any way whatsoever.

I was talking about what I recall from video that I saw [years ago?]. I could be wrong but, I recall that momma bear made it back to the cubs, but later died of her injuries and the cubs starved. The horrendous violence in this video is hard to watch and the uncut version was even more difficult. Since I found out how common it is with many male mammals, I was the boss of my children, no males, only me, their mother.... their father left, and I took care of them.... It's terribly sad. Even more troubling is that LOTS of animal videos are fairy tale frauds (especially the feel good videos). And, like this one, many (many) are actually rip offs of other videos that are real.
If a bear eats another animal alive....it's nature way....and if it falls due to its own stupid mistake....it's disturbing ??? I say it deserved it !!! This tooo is Nature's way 😌
I think when they said disturbing they were referring to the loss of a bear from an already endangered species not so much to the loss of this particular bear in this particular way.

I wasn't saying anything was or wasn't "natures way" l was trying to clarify for OP why l thought the commentator on the video was saying it was disturbing. But, by all means, get it off your chest, l'm sure you'll feel better afterwards. I don't like beer but, interestingly enough, l AM painting at the moment. I recommend Dulux Wash'n'wear. It's waterbased so dries quickly and doesn't smell as strongly as oil based paints. DO remember to ventilate though. I don't think you can spare any more brain cells.

She was found dead 3 months after this from starvation, the cubs weren't found so another male probably got them

I read an article about this video somewhere, and apparently there were no fatalities. The bear that fell was just stunned, he got up a few minutes later and walked off like nothing happened.

Nope, the rangers found the male dead. In the video, you can see it landed on its chin against a large boulder. The mother bear was left food and water outside of its den. But when they went back in Sept. the mother bear and TWO cubs were found dead.

You're wrong. The male died and the mother and her cub survived!!. I found an article in the " Independent" out of UK I believe.

@@standdown4929 Lol you read the earlier article and don't even know about the updated ones written 3 months later from that. She's dead and so are the cubs. Only 2 articles updated the story and Newsweek one has the most detail and corrected on which bear died where. The male one insta died right at the bottom of the cliff, Mama bear kept rolling got up crawled into a cave with surviving cubs and all found dead.
That bear found out the hard way, don't be a simp and get with females that already have a kid.
