I wish more animal/monster/creature fight scenes in movies were like this. None of the incessant roaring for no reason, only as much blood as there needs to be (and even then it's largely masked by the mud and fur and sweat), no overdramatic score. Just a man and a bear. You can feel the weight and damage of the animal just through DiCaprio's screams, and the bear's behaviour is understandable the whole way through. Imagine if one of the Jurassic World films had a scene like this, it'd be NUTS. Never underestimate how scary realism can be, honestly an excess of gore and noise would've completely neutered the scene.
@Twiddly Stosh that’s true! Plus, unlike some of the later films, you can totally understand why Rexy starts fucking the jeep up. She thinks it’s a toy! Seems pretty clear the animals in JP weren’t given much enrichment, so you can understand her behaviour, unlike the later films (and, admittedly, some other parts of the first one) where they just kinda attack for the sake of attacking

I mean, if she were relying on smell she’d have probably gone for Malcolm or Grant without them needing the flares, nor would she have attacked the Jeep’s tires, which almost certainly don’t smell like meat xD My theory is, she thought the jeeps were a toy, got overenthusiastic cuz you KNOW that girl didn’t get much enrichment in her enclosure, and was only further encouraged when she realised the jeep had food inside. Think of it as like... a reverse kinder egg, to her.

She actually tried in futility to eat the chassis and tires because she could smell meat underneath, but every bite on the vehicle turned out to be unappetizing. It could also be premature homage to a scene in The Lost World where they explain that the T-rexes destroyed their camp because the animals now considered it to be part of their territory. Rexy may have then considered outside the fence to be her territory so she pushed the SUV over the edge and into the moat to display her dominance.
I see a few people mentioning the scenes where the T-rex starts tearing apart the jeep in the original Jurassic Park film, and that's pretty true to life for how paleontologists think most predatory dinosaurs would have brought down prey. It's important to note the similarities to birds that most predatory dinosaurs have, even the T-rex, and most people who have ever seen predatory birds eat will notice that their primary method of attacking or eating prey is to press their weight down on them with a foot and start tearing at them while they are pinned. Predatory birds like eagles and falcons will typically kill a prey item outright with the force imparted from a dive and their sharp claws, but for a T-rex, it would have been more akin to a tiger; ambushing an animal and seeking to take them down in a single blow, pinning them down with their feet or holding them in place with their deceptively strong arms and forcing them to the ground, where they could be then consumed at their leisure. So imagine, if you will, a forty-foot long, eight ton animal bursting out of the treeline and clamping a pair of jaws capable of 35,000 Newtons of force down onto the slender neck of a hadrosaur, sinking teeth the size of steak knives into its throat and using its feet and arms to hold the prey down and keep it from thrashing. Then, with the kill complete, it would start tearing away long strips of flesh by shaking its head like a crocodile, or pulling it away like a bird. Needless to say, the scene would have been bloody and noisy, and the aftermath absolutely horrific.
@@Jianadotcom No lol! That would be insane!! The guys name is Glenn Ennis who was in the CGI suit for the Bear. He does all of the big animal films actually. He's gotten famous off of imitating animals for several films like Planet of the Apes and this one, amongst others.

It's insane. The bear was a paid actor and was only going to simulate mauling him, but apparently Di Caprio convinced it to actually maul him for realism. In later Interviews, the bear confessed that it's still haunted by the fact that it hurt Di Caprio so badly, but its apparently what he wanted.
The bears claws are what got me in this scene. One quick swipe and his entire chest and neck area is fucked up. Scary how powerful animals can be, especially bears.
The way the bear flinches after being shot then just gets back to mauling him is crazy 😮 goosebumps all over me 😂 honestly one of the most deserved Oscar’s in film history.
I am a former wildlife tour guide in Yellowstone National Park and worked as a Wildlife technician in Montana under wildlife biologists. I've had more grizzly encounters than your average person. That said, this scene is the most accurate portrayal of a grizzly mauling in cinema. Now there are 3 main reasons a grizzly will attack. 1. Protecting a food source such as a carcass. Mind you, when a carcass is available for a bear, most other predators will want to partake as well. So grizzlies have to defend their food. 2. If you startle one. Like what happens when the grizzly was meandering over to Leo's character and Leo decides to shoot the bear. 3. Protecting offspring. Boar (male) grizzlies will kill cubs and force Sows (female) bears into esterus (heat). Males have a desire to pass on their own lineage so as to minimize rival competition. Predation is often at the bottom of the list of reasons a grizzly will attack and predation tends to only occur during hyperphasia or when a grizzly is putting on weight for hibernation. Something that you'll notice about this scene particularly (which is done extraordinary well) is exhibiting accurate bear behavior. The bear is frantic when attacking. Grabbing onto immediate movement and threats such as when he tries to push the bear the bear grabs his arm. Also, when Leo's character is being completely still the bear feels she has neutralized him as a threat and begins investigating to ensure that. There's a neat little rhyme to help you remember what to do if you are ever attacked by a bear. "If it's brown, lay down; if it's black, fight back; if it's white, goodnight." He maintained beliefs that bears enjoyed having him around, needed him around for protection against poachers and even believed that he lived harmoniously with grizzlies. Now, Katmai National Park where Treadwell was killed has a large population of grizzlies that primarily subsist on salmon and as such Treadwell believed that he could safely be in close proximity with Grizzlies. Which he did, successfully. But, like I said, bears during hyperphasia are often desperate to put on weight for hibernation and if a bear is small, old, sick, or weak they may not be able to compete with some bears within a given territory. Thus, the opportunity to get an easy feed was simply too enticing for the bear.
@@aprildenise9815 Timothy Treadwell along with his then girlfriend were mauled and mostly consumed by a grizzly bear. There is speculation that they were killed by a large Grizzly Bear at their camp site at Katmai National Park, but there was a head of a much smaller grizzly relatively close to the site. The larger grizzly was killed and found with human remains indicative of Treadwell and his girlfriend. But it's unknown if the smaller grizzly killed Treadwell and his girlfriend only to be out competed and eaten by the larger grizzly.
Scary thing is in the old west this likely happened plenty of times. Mother grizzlies are murderously protective of their cubs, and a lot of frontiersmen likely were killed by angry grizzlies.
Expansion out West: lots of frontiersmen and women died from wild animals. Wolves were incredibly nasty. A bear might be persuaded to run off, but a pack of wolves could dog a small party or snatch a careless child.
Again i say watch her reactions, first attack was get the f away from my children and she goes to leave. He is almost unharmed. Would have been fine if he laid still and shut the hell up. Playing dead is more effective than most other methods. She just wanted to warn and remove danger. The human kept the fight going.

@@aclock2 Adult grizzly's are too heavy to climb trees. You'd be safe if you found a strong sturdy tree that the bear can't knock down and climbed up it. Black bears can climb though.
5:25 this is what you call amazing professional acting. Especially when he forgets where his knife is because he's in such a daze from what just happened. Leo always puts so much realism and dedication to his role. One of the best actors of all time by far.
@@Koremel1 it was mostly the rifle, you can see the bear stumble on it's way back to Leo, it was mostly finished. Few good stabs in it's neck was enough to finish it.
Imagine the fight or flight hitting you and thinking maybe you can do something to save yourself but then seeing it just a few feet away quickly approaching
It’s pretty crazy to see the amount of damage a human can actually take and still survive tho. And this isn’t even unrealistic. There’s actual true stories of humans surviving insane things like this. Also I love how the shotgun to the face at least weakened the bear. Bears can take a lot of gunfire, even from shotguns, but from point blank range to the face, it makes sense how it acted after the adrenaline started to wear off
It depends largely on the humans ability to stay calm and keep a clear head a lot of the time, the majority of people would go into shock or blind panic mode and end up dying because of it
That’s a flintlock, but the size of that projectile does about the same amount of damage as modern day buckshot from that range. Bears are strong af but a flintlock to the neck will drop just about anything

1:36 I started having heart palpitations here. Having taught English at schools for years, I've gone through Hatchet a few times. The one thing you never want to see is cubs without a mother. That usually means you are between a mother and her cubs. I was horrifically not disappointed.

God, I adore scenes like this.. the ones where no music plays. It's only you and the blood, screaming, agony, and right until all of the chaos dies down to raspy, pleading breath, the tension is present, and it freezes you in place.

Also these injuries suffered here are based on real acount of Hugh Glass.
Shooting her was the worst possible thing to do in that situation. She most likely ensuring he was dead and the fact that he shot her only let her know he is still a threat.
Debatable, given most grizzlies actively eat their prey as they maul it. She was clearly acting with intent to protect her young, but after she ensured their safety, she was coming back to his direction. To finish him off or potentially enjoy a light snack. I dont think this move was entirely unmerited.
This has to be one of the most brutal and horrifyingly real beatings I've ever seen. Holy fuck he earned that oscar. I've gotta look up how they did this because it's incredibly real looking.

What makes the scene the most realistic and scary, is the fact, that it has no music in the background. You feel inside like "holy shit, this is how it would look and sound like, if it was me being attacked".
@@penclawActually, if you look at the statistics you could see that most encounters do not result in death. Bears can be pretty dangerous, but if you follow the right procedures in bear country, you'll be fine.

What hits me is it’s just survival. It’s not good vs evil. She wants to protect her cubs, he wants to live. She has to fight to continue her bloodline just like he does. Just…wow

I love that there is no music in this scene. It adds so much to the realism. Also I don't know if there is anything that would terrify me more than being in the woods alone and coming across a couple of grizzly cubs.
People overlook how the Bear and Glass mirror each other. Both are parents, highly protective of they're kin and ready to kill for them. When Glass shoots the bear's neck, it responds by delivering a similarly fatal blow to Glass' neck. The two 'die' on top of one another, the bear physically and Glass metaphorically, he references this later "I ain't afraid to die anymore. I'd done it already". The shot of the cubs crying for they're mother symbolizes Hawk, who will all too soon be devoured by predators without a parent's protection. The bear is skinned and worn by Glass the rest of the movie showing that, like the pelt, Glass is a shell of a man. Later when he sleeps in the horse carcass the cut along it's abdomen suggests a return to the womb and eventual rebirth. So much beautiful symbolism inside a deeply dark and gritty movie.
I know these bears are literally cgi but I still feel bad for all the characters involved. Leo for getting mauled when he was never really a threat, momma bear having to die to protect her babies, and her babies becoming orphans. It’s just a very sad and brutal scene. Damn.

@@jamessmilus321 It nearly killed him, he was left for dead because of how bad his wounds were, remember? I'm not sure if he really killed the bear, one of the other members of the team could've found them and killed the bear. Also, the fact he DID go hundreds of miles by himself despite his horrific injuries is verifiably true.
Apart from DiCaprio's acting (which is obvious).... what I love the most is how convincing his desperation is to survive. All his guts is coming from the fact that he is scared to die. The eyes say it.
If he was really scared to die......he should have taken that first ass whoopin and stayed down. Noooooo, he had to take a shot. The Bear: "Oh no this mutha-fugga didn't"

This scene is by far the most accurate depiction of an actual bear attack. Like for real this deserves an award! None of the cheesy Hollywood crap about animals attacking people for absolutely no reason or wanting to eat them.
@@maxtor6416You’re right but the gunshot wound is what kills the bear. He hit it in the neck and it bled out. The knife wouldn’t do much to that near other than make it angrier.
I haven't played RDR 2 but in the first RDR you could get charged by a bear and they were very silent. You had to constantly be doing a 360 in certain areas or they would catch you and hit you before you could react if you weren't paying attention.

Everything about this scene is amazing. From the start of when he sees the cubs to the end of the fight, seeing the cubs appear before his eyes brinigs up the queestion...Where is the mother before getting hit in the face with a jarring and gruesome attack by the mother. Not gruesome by having a lot of gore but by how utterly realistic it is.
This scene was so well done, it’s perfect. The bear CGI looks so good, Leo’s acting is phenomenal, there’s no unnecessary background score, and the intensity and emotion of the whole scene is masterfully played out. But I kinda feel bad for the bear cub he just turned into an orphan.
Yes me 2.. and all because he is stupid not paying more attention, then more stupidity shooting it instead of just play dead and this mistake he does one more time again wich eventually lead to the poor little babies alone,scared and probably dead within a few weeks
The part at 2:16 when the Bear is clawing his back and Dicaprio gives out that Big Long Scream and then the Bear shakes him back and forth like a Dog does a Ragdoll is the most hard hitting part for me. I remember nearly flipping in my seat at that part watching this at the Cinema with my Friend. In all honesty though this Movie is a Masterpiece and although I thought Leonardo Dicaprio deserved winning an Oscar for other Movie roles such as The Departed or Blood Diamond (which is my personal Favourite Dicaprio Film) I’m glad he finally won his much deserved Oscar for this Movie!
1:47 A lot of people severely underestimate how quickly bears can move due to how big they are and its usually fatal a fatal mistake especially when hunting, that's 1,000+ lbs of murder sprinting faster than Usain Bolts 28 mph Olympic record (grizzlies can on average get up to 32-35 mph).
My buddy is an avid hunter and has had a few close calls. He’s talked about their intelligence, speed and durability. They’re like tanks that can withstand multiple gunshots and can outrun virtually any human. Terrifying and majestic at the same time
@@rickkcir2 dude, get educated. there are enough videos of bears chasing horses on youtube. yes, the bear is a little slower but not much. its enough to keep up. and then comes the stamina into play. horses cant sprint for long, bears can do it for an insanely long amount of time for their weight. also, for a horse to sprint, the terrain needs to be even and solid ground, any horse rider will tell you that. if a horse hoof gets stuck into some hole and the horse breaks or injures his leg, its game over. a bear with its broad paws has a much better footing in non ideal ground. to make it short, if a bear sets sight on a horse and its not on a steppe with good terrain and some opportunities to get of the sight of the bear, that horse is history in most cases.

Monster doesn’t have to mean character, it can very well be a physical description, and a bear is one of the few things that can be described physically as a “monster.” That thing can decapitate a moose with one swing.
That mother bear is not a monster. She’s protecting her babies really the next thing you’re gonna say the elephants are monsters, but they’re just gentle Giants, including protecting their young from being poached to death.

I remember watching this in the theater and cringing at how real and painful it looked. I was waiting all movie to see the bear scene so when he paused in the forest and the little cubs ran by, I knew what was about to happen…. One of the greatest movies and scenes of the 2010s
I don't know about that. CGI is expensive, and this doesn't look like a movie with big budget. It's either trained bear, or it was a wild bear caught on camera attacking this actor and instead of helping the guy, the camera man decided to film it so they can put it in this movie. Anyway this actor did really bad job, he had gun and coulnd't get that bear for so long, imagine if it were a stronger animal like Siberian Tiger or a mountain Lion? He wouldn't survive for 10 seconds and this movie would have a bad ending. I'm glad actor survived this attack at least.
even the grass in the frame in a scene like that plays better than 70% of hollywood. man, this movie was a legend. even though I want Dicaprion to get an Oscar for his previous movies, it is more meaningful and beautiful for me that he got it for this movie. it is a masterpiece....
My favorite scene in this movie. What a fantastic film this was! Shows how strong a father's love can be even though society unfortunately underestimates his love for his kids.
Nowadays a lot of rangers and hikers/campers will tell you to use bear spray and a gun (with enough kick to it) for self defense. I couldn’t imagine taking on a bear with a bow and arrow or a musket. Hardcore.
The best detail out of the whole attack was when the bear slashed his throat. DiCaprio wasn't able to scream anymore after that, and he played it out perfectly. Wolves go for the throat for that very purpose too.
Considering the real Hugh survived that exact injury, I wonder how he miraculouslt avoided having his aorta torn apart He got cut on the part of the neck that isn’t absolutely vital, thats quite some extreme luck considering the size and wideness of the bear’s paw and claws

But yeah, Hugh Glass did survive that mauling and I'm almost 100% positive he was injured by a claw strike to the neck too

This scene is so visceral like you can feel it like your there with him in the moment. No music or anything like that, just the sounds of nature. You think it’s over and then the bear comes back and hurts him even more, it would be absolutely terrifying if a bear was taking bites out of you with those sharp teeth
The most insane thing is that being in the woods the scariest thing ain't seeing a bear. It's seeing a bear cub. I've seen bears more than once, never had what you'd call a close encounter though. Never once seen a cub, and I dread the day.

The thing i love the most is how they portray the constant imminent danger in the wilderness. Especially back then when the land was only inhabited by natives and untouched, the movie really captured the grim reality of westward "expansion". Especially the wildlife threats oh my goodness

I like the way they portrayed mama bear, she is Just protecting her cubs, no evil intent Grizzly females has to defend their cubs to the death against the larger males that wants to kill the cubs in order to mate
Oh its still evil just an accepted version of it. The bear could have just scared him away instead of straight forward attacking him. There were no warnings from the bear just direct attack which could have (and did) end the bears life thus leaving its cubs defenseless. Yeah it is an animal but that does not rule out good and evil. A very dumb move on the bears side.

Walking alone through dense forest in the middle of nowhere, rainy/foggy weather, also looks like it's cold, equipped with something that loses more than half of its accuracy above 90 feet, fires only one shot before you need to reload for at least 13 seconds and can't be used, if the powder is wet, only to encounter two bear cubs with no mother in sight...until you hear her growl behind you.
This scene is an amazing achievement! I genuinely don’t know how they did it! The cast and crew don’t talk about the making of this scene too much! Helps to keep the mystery! 😂
he should have just waited man, after a grizzly leaves you alone you should wait a solid 30-45 minutes or at least until you're sure it's gone. unless the bear is literally eating you curl up into a little ball, protect your neck and limbs and don't move. if they're trying to get rid of a threat when you stop moving and stay still you stop being a threat. then you just gotta give it time to make sure they've actually cleared the area.
The bear was casually approaching him with its cubs before he shot. Pretty sure they were about to chow down. He waited until it got extremely close, and it was still coming at him. You either take the shot while you have the chance, or you don't get to shoot. We saw how hard it was for him to aim his gun. I doubt he could quickly readjust and aim if he waited for the bear to be on him. Gun probably wouldn't kill it unless you hit something important, but he doesn't have alot of options here.

Scene looked really dangerous. I think Leo DiCaprio is a genius actor. He's so good at whatever role he takes on. Even if the movie is mostly about slogging thru the muddy dark swamps in search of friends and sanctuary, Leo makes it tolerable to watch.

One of my favorite movies. The raw intense scenes and subtle emotions. Survival is a strong emotion. Leo embrace it in this performance. Betrayal , survival, and revenge in the name of redemption.
I wish more animal/monster/creature fight scenes in movies were like this. None of the incessant roaring for no reason, only as much blood as there needs to be (and even then it's largely masked by the mud and fur and sweat), no overdramatic score. Just a man and a bear. You can feel the weight and damage of the animal just through DiCaprio's screams, and the bear's behaviour is understandable the whole way through. Imagine if one of the Jurassic World films had a scene like this, it'd be NUTS. Never underestimate how scary realism can be, honestly an excess of gore and noise would've completely neutered the scene.

She actually tried in futility to eat the chassis and tires because she could smell meat underneath, but every bite on the vehicle turned out to be unappetizing. It could also be premature homage to a scene in The Lost World where they explain that the T-rexes destroyed their camp because the animals now considered it to be part of their territory. Rexy may have then considered outside the fence to be her territory so she pushed the SUV over the edge and into the moat to display her dominance.
I see a few people mentioning the scenes where the T-rex starts tearing apart the jeep in the original Jurassic Park film, and that's pretty true to life for how paleontologists think most predatory dinosaurs would have brought down prey.
It's important to note the similarities to birds that most predatory dinosaurs have, even the T-rex, and most people who have ever seen predatory birds eat will notice that their primary method of attacking or eating prey is to press their weight down on them with a foot and start tearing at them while they are pinned. Predatory birds like eagles and falcons will typically kill a prey item outright with the force imparted from a dive and their sharp claws, but for a T-rex, it would have been more akin to a tiger; ambushing an animal and seeking to take them down in a single blow, pinning them down with their feet or holding them in place with their deceptively strong arms and forcing them to the ground, where they could be then consumed at their leisure.
So imagine, if you will, a forty-foot long, eight ton animal bursting out of the treeline and clamping a pair of jaws capable of 35,000 Newtons of force down onto the slender neck of a hadrosaur, sinking teeth the size of steak knives into its throat and using its feet and arms to hold the prey down and keep it from thrashing. Then, with the kill complete, it would start tearing away long strips of flesh by shaking its head like a crocodile, or pulling it away like a bird. Needless to say, the scene would have been bloody and noisy, and the aftermath absolutely horrific.
So it took this man to get damn near mauled by a damn bear in order to finally receive Best Actor at the Oscars

I am a former wildlife tour guide in Yellowstone National Park and worked as a Wildlife technician in Montana under wildlife biologists. I've had more grizzly encounters than your average person. That said, this scene is the most accurate portrayal of a grizzly mauling in cinema. Now there are 3 main reasons a grizzly will attack.
1. Protecting a food source such as a carcass. Mind you, when a carcass is available for a bear, most other predators will want to partake as well. So grizzlies have to defend their food.
2. If you startle one. Like what happens when the grizzly was meandering over to Leo's character and Leo decides to shoot the bear.
3. Protecting offspring. Boar (male) grizzlies will kill cubs and force Sows (female) bears into esterus (heat). Males have a desire to pass on their own lineage so as to minimize rival competition.
Predation is often at the bottom of the list of reasons a grizzly will attack and predation tends to only occur during hyperphasia or when a grizzly is putting on weight for hibernation.
Something that you'll notice about this scene particularly (which is done extraordinary well) is exhibiting accurate bear behavior. The bear is frantic when attacking. Grabbing onto immediate movement and threats such as when he tries to push the bear the bear grabs his arm. Also, when Leo's character is being completely still the bear feels she has neutralized him as a threat and begins investigating to ensure that.
There's a neat little rhyme to help you remember what to do if you are ever attacked by a bear.
"If it's brown, lay down; if it's black, fight back; if it's white, goodnight."

@@Grimreepa220 Timothy Treadwell (A.K.A. Grizzlyman) was what I like to call a conservation extremist. He maintained beliefs that bears enjoyed having him around, needed him around for protection against poachers and even believed that he lived harmoniously with grizzlies.
Now, Katmai National Park where Treadwell was killed has a large population of grizzlies that primarily subsist on salmon and as such Treadwell believed that he could safely be in close proximity with Grizzlies. Which he did, successfully. But, like I said, bears during hyperphasia are often desperate to put on weight for hibernation and if a bear is small, old, sick, or weak they may not be able to compete with some bears within a given territory. Thus, the opportunity to get an easy feed was simply too enticing for the bear.

There is speculation that they were killed by a large Grizzly Bear at their camp site at Katmai National Park, but there was a head of a much smaller grizzly relatively close to the site. The larger grizzly was killed and found with human remains indicative of Treadwell and his girlfriend. But it's unknown if the smaller grizzly killed Treadwell and his girlfriend only to be out competed and eaten by the larger grizzly.
Scary thing is in the old west this likely happened plenty of times. Mother grizzlies are murderously protective of their cubs, and a lot of frontiersmen likely were killed by angry grizzlies.
Expansion out West: lots of frontiersmen and women died from wild animals. Wolves were incredibly nasty. A bear might be persuaded to run off, but a pack of wolves could dog a small party or snatch a careless child.
Again i say watch her reactions, first attack was get the f away from my children and she goes to leave. He is almost unharmed. Would have been fine if he laid still and shut the hell up. Playing dead is more effective than most other methods. She just wanted to warn and remove danger. The human kept the fight going.

There’s actual true stories of humans surviving insane things like this. Also I love how the shotgun to the face at least weakened the bear. 1:36 I started having heart palpitations here. Having taught English at schools for years, I've gone through Hatchet a few times. The one thing you never want to see is cubs without a mother. That usually means you are between a mother and her cubs.

Shooting her was the worst possible thing to do in that situation. She most likely ensuring he was dead and the fact that he shot her only let her know he is still a threat.
Debatable, given most grizzlies actively eat their prey as they maul it. She was clearly acting with intent to protect her young, but after she ensured their safety, she was coming back to his direction. To finish him off or potentially enjoy a light snack. I dont think this move was entirely unmerited.
She would come back, plus, it’s revenge for what the bear did.

People overlook how the Bear and Glass mirror each other. Both are parents, highly protective of they're kin and ready to kill for them. When Glass shoots the bear's neck, it responds by delivering a similarly fatal blow to Glass' neck. The two 'die' on top of one another, the bear physically and Glass metaphorically, he references this later "I ain't afraid to die anymore. I'd done it already". The shot of the cubs crying for they're mother symbolizes Hawk, who will all too soon be devoured by predators without a parent's protection. The bear is skinned and worn by Glass the rest of the movie showing that, like the pelt, Glass is a shell of a man. Later when he sleeps in the horse carcass the cut along it's abdomen suggests a return to the womb and eventual rebirth. So much beautiful symbolism inside a deeply dark and gritty movie.
I know these bears are literally cgi but I still feel bad for all the characters involved. Leo for getting mauled when he was never really a threat, momma bear having to die to protect her babies, and her babies becoming orphans. It’s just a very sad and brutal scene. Damn.

I haven't played RDR 2 but in the first RDR you could get charged by a bear and they were very silent. You had to constantly be doing a 360 in certain areas or they would catch you and hit you before you could react if you weren't paying attention.

Everything about this scene is amazing. From the start of when he sees the cubs to the end of the fight, seeing the cubs appear before his eyes brinigs up the queestion...Where is the mother before getting hit in the face with a jarring and gruesome attack by the mother. Not gruesome by having a lot of gore but by how utterly realistic it is.
This scene was so well done, it’s perfect. The bear CGI looks so good, Leo’s acting is phenomenal, there’s no unnecessary background score, and the intensity and emotion of the whole scene is masterfully played out.
But I kinda feel bad for the bear cub he just turned into an orphan.

The part at 2:16 when the Bear is clawing his back and Dicaprio gives out that Big Long Scream and then the Bear shakes him back and forth like a Dog does a Ragdoll is the most hard hitting part for me. I remember nearly flipping in my seat at that part watching this at the Cinema with my Friend. In all honesty though this Movie is a Masterpiece and although I thought Leonardo Dicaprio deserved winning an Oscar for other Movie roles such as The Departed or Blood Diamond (which is my personal Favourite Dicaprio Film) I’m glad he finally won his much deserved Oscar for this Movie!

A lot of people severely underestimate how quickly bears can move due to how big they are and its usually fatal a fatal mistake especially when hunting, that's 1,000+ lbs of murder sprinting faster than Usain Bolts 28 mph Olympic record (grizzlies can on average get up to 32-35 mph).
My buddy is an avid hunter and has had a few close calls. He’s talked about their intelligence, speed and durability. They’re like tanks that can withstand multiple gunshots and can outrun virtually any human. Terrifying and majestic at the same time

@@rickkcir2 dude, get educated. there are enough videos of bears chasing horses on youtube. yes, the bear is a little slower but not much. its enough to keep up. and then comes the stamina into play. horses cant sprint for long, bears can do it for an insanely long amount of time for their weight. also, for a horse to sprint, the terrain needs to be even and solid ground, any horse rider will tell you that. if a horse hoof gets stuck into some hole and the horse breaks or injures his leg, its game over. a bear with its broad paws has a much better footing in non ideal ground. to make it short, if a bear sets sight on a horse and its not on a steppe with good terrain and some opportunities to get of the sight of the bear, that horse is history in most cases.

I remember watching this in the theater and cringing at how real and painful it looked. I was waiting all movie to see the bear scene so when he paused in the forest and the little cubs ran by, I knew what was about to happen…. One of the greatest movies and scenes of the 2010s
I don't know about that. CGI is expensive, and this doesn't look like a movie with big budget. It's either trained bear, or it was a wild bear caught on camera attacking this actor and instead of helping the guy, the camera man decided to film it so they can put it in this movie. Anyway this actor did really bad job, he had gun and coulnd't get that bear for so long, imagine if it were a stronger animal like Siberian Tiger or a mountain Lion? He wouldn't survive for 10 seconds and this movie would have a bad ending. I'm glad actor survived this attack at least.

Nowadays a lot of rangers and hikers/campers will tell you to use bear spray and a gun (with enough kick to it) for self defense. I couldn’t imagine taking on a bear with a bow and arrow or a musket. Hardcore.
One of the best uses of CGI ever, if someone died say 20 years ago but somehow came back and watched this scene they would never know it wasn't real.

The best detail out of the whole attack was when the bear slashed his throat. DiCaprio wasn't able to scream anymore after that, and he played it out perfectly. Wolves go for the throat for that very purpose too.

It’s fascinating how much rdr2 takes from this film. Truly underrated.
This scene is so visceral like you can feel it like your there with him in the moment. No music or anything like that, just the sounds of nature. You think it’s over and then the bear comes back and hurts him even more, it would be absolutely terrifying if a bear was taking bites out of you with those sharp teeth
The claws really got me, bear claws are like daggers, just imagining what a few of them ripping through one’s back feels like makes me shiver

The most insane thing is that being in the woods the scariest thing ain't seeing a bear. It's seeing a bear cub. I've seen bears more than once, never had what you'd call a close encounter though. Never once seen a cub, and I dread the day.

The thing i love the most is how they portray the constant imminent danger in the wilderness. Especially back then when the land was only inhabited by natives and untouched, the movie really captured the grim reality of westward "expansion". Especially the wildlife threats oh my goodness

There were no warnings from the bear just direct attack which could have (and did) end the bears life thus leaving its cubs defenseless. Yeah it is an animal but that does not rule out good and evil. This is an incredible scene and feeling.
Walking alone through dense forest in the middle of nowhere, rainy/foggy weather, also looks like it's cold, equipped with something that loses more than half of its accuracy above 90 feet, fires only one shot before you need to reload for at least 13 seconds and can't be used, if the powder is wet, only to encounter two bear cubs with no mother in sight...until you hear her growl behind you.
Honestly, one of the best scenes ever made.

he should have just waited man, after a grizzly leaves you alone you should wait a solid 30-45 minutes or at least until you're sure it's gone. unless the bear is literally eating you curl up into a little ball, protect your neck and limbs and don't move. if they're trying to get rid of a threat when you stop moving and stay still you stop being a threat. then you just gotta give it time to make sure they've actually cleared the area.
The bear was casually approaching him with its cubs before he shot. Pretty sure they were about to chow down. He waited until it got extremely close, and it was still coming at him. You either take the shot while you have the chance, or you don't get to shoot. We saw how hard it was for him to aim his gun. I doubt he could quickly readjust and aim if he waited for the bear to be on him. Gun probably wouldn't kill it unless you hit something important, but he doesn't have alot of options here.
Plus he had a lot of adrenaline so he wouldn’t be making good decisions a lot of the time

I’ve seen a lot of movies in my life, and this is the greatest performance I’ve ever seen an actor or actress give in a movie. And the range from Wolf of Wall Street to this is why Leo is the greatest actor of all time
One of my favorite movies. The raw intense scenes and subtle emotions. Survival is a strong emotion. Leo embrace it in this performance. Betrayal , survival, and revenge in the name of redemption.
