Love your videos, Jordan. There are so many muppets on TH-cam with dangerous half-knowledge confidently spreading misinformation. You seem like a guy who always reads the manual, which is refreshing!
Thank you so much for this! I hopped onto eBay and got the DXA-2T, exactly the blue one in the video, for $50. It was EXACTLY what I needed to go from Mixcast 4, to our Sony ZV-E10. Now I get the pro quality sound from our studio, right into our main camera so I don't have to sync it in post anymore. This is going to save me hours every week!
Some mixers have 'Tape Out', with unbalanced RCA jacks. Works good for short runs. Depending on the circumstance, a stereo out can also be taken from the head phone jack. Mackie make a point of the headphone jack as an optional out put with plenty of signal. Over all and excellent instructional video. One note, if a mono signal is recorded in the camera, in post, the track can be doubled for a Left/Right output, but will not be stereo. Most of us know what you meant, but a total newbie will need to understand a double mono will not have stereo imaging. - Cheers
WOW! Thank you so much. I've been struggling with hiss in my camera recordings for my church for years. I never realized that my issue was the Mic/Line level difference. I just used an interface and it fixed it all. Thank you!!!!!!
A thousand thanks! How could I not think of a simple RCA-3.5mm cable?! I use a Pioneer DJ console so it obviously has the mixer wih stereo outputs ecc.. I took it for granted that it wouldn't work without an interface, so I always tried with the classic "iRig" interface and it never worked (but it did with the phone, connected by earphone 3,5 plug). By connecting the RCA cable, and setting the volume to -3dB, it immediately worked. Thanks again !!! Subscribed!!
Excellent and helpful video. Question: MY Soundcraft UI24 mixer has xlr aux outputs, could I use them with a y cable (xlr female to 3.5mm male) and feed that to a camera input and sitll ahve it work, wth the limitations you described a given as well? In the past I have used an IK multimedia interface _irig Stream) to feed diretly from main outputs to the rca inputs of the interface and it works well (until my interface died ), but I'm going to go with a camera instead of my iPhone and it would be handy to use one of the techniques you described here. Thanks.
Fantastic video!! Question: If I have an xlr adapter, specifically the XLRKM3 that directly connects to the camera via hotshoe, will it work if I run xlr cables from the mixer into the adapter?
Thank you for this video, I’m having a problem I use an audio interface the tascam ca-xlr2d to the mixer behringer x32. Using the xlr to the monitor out, I’m only getting the mics but there are instructions like keyboard and drums connected. I’m not too familiar with mixers
Thanks for the detailed video, it made a lot of confusing thing clear. When recording a live show is it recommended to record from a mixer output over a dedicated on camera mic or the built-in mic?
My camera (Canon C100 mark ii) already has got a pre amp attached to the body meaning I can connect an XLR cable directly from the camera to the sound desk and be able to record clean audio ? Wondering if I need a red and green xlr like the one you showed in the video. Thank you for your help !
Thank you Thank you Thank you. I have seen so many useless videos showing me video camera unboxing. This is exactly what I wanted to learn.. I’m a drummer and I teach. I wanted to give my students a sound quality video lesson from my digital drums to my mixer to be uploaded to I-Movie on my computer instead of using the camera microphone Again, thanks
Best enlightening video I have ever seen on audio for live streams. I have a query. I had to cover a stage program recently, I requested an audio out from the sound operator. I gave him my cable with quarter inch heads. I recorded the event, keeping DSLR audio level to 1. still the audio was distorted/jarred probably due to high power. even after my requests, operator was unwilling to minimize the level. what solution you suggest in these situation. those audio interfaces sit on cameras are they helpful ?
At the last event, I had only the option to use headphones out to Rode the wireless go transmitter, and it worked fine. Can you give us some thoughts about this solution?
Firstly Thank You , your explinations and demos are the best I seen on TH-cam. I have a question? I teach Live Fitness Streaming Workouts, that I record simultaneously on DSLR Camera. These HYBRID workouts are fed to the camera mic input via Cotrol Monitor output, HOWEVER I've struggled to balance the recorded mix (as the mic volume is over powered by music in the video recording) I may have missed it but do you have a video specifically addressing HYBRID recording to DSLR camera ?
I'm using the zoom Q2n camera. I get how to run audio out of the board or snake on stage into the camera from the 1/4 inch or XLR balanced Aux/Line etc to the 1/8 inch (3.5mm) input of the camera. My question is how do I take that signal and send it from the camera to a listenable mix for the board engineer to hear and mix each channel to achieve the best mix for recording? The Camera audio out is headphone level 1/8 inch 3.5mm. Thanks for the help.
Hi sir.I have one doubt, how can we connect the yamaha mixer Mg 10 Xu with a Camcorder and speakers for 1.)live streaming(TH-cam) and 2.)stage performance sir? Because when we start a live or recording particularly when both the singer sings and the musical instrument (Keyboard 🎹)played at a same time the audio was not clear, noisy, unclear in the live streaming or recording..high buzzing sound has been produced instead of the singer and 🎹 instrument performance...but not in the stage performance (it is always ok).. and also what cables we should use especially for live streaming and where should we connect those cables sir?
Great Video.. I have a soundcraft mixer that has a USB B output for audio recording but its only to record from USB B to USB 3.0 HOW CAN I GET USB B TO 3.5MM.. PLEASE HELP. MAIN AND MONITOR OUTPUT ARE ALREADY IN USE
Awesome. I just learned so much. Like why my connection to the mixer was blowing out my mic... wish I watched this a week before the event and not a week after :(. Thanks much for the great info.
Very precise illustration of different methods of how to connect the camera to the mixer and the key of how to ensure proper input level for sound recording with good quality while not affecting the in house sound quality😘.👍🙌👍👏😘🙏😇🐷🦁

Thank you so much for this! Ran into an issue- I've got the master out XLR cables going to an audio interface and connecting to the camera mic. When I set the camera's audio input down to 1, it's barely audible. I set the input to "auto" and I get that hissing. It sounds fine using headphones on the mixer. Would you be willing to give me advice?
Without seeing your setup, I'm guessing your audio interface level is set too low. You can bump your camera up to 5 or so to see if that helps as well.
@@kettnercreative Yes, thank you! Bumping the camera up just a little worked perfectly. It sounds great and I appreciate it so much. Your video was also so very helpful. Thanks!

So a good point to aim for in setting volume is the -6 mark on the volume indicator on the camera?
Not really. You run into the same issue since the Scarlett 2i2 has Line Level outputs and the camera still has Mic Level inputs. We have a video coming out shortly for the Scarlett 2i2.

I have been using the “headphones output” to go to my camcorder. Is this a realistic 4th option or is there a real negative to using headphones?( other than losing the option to actually use the headphones off the board) I notice a slight hum/hiss using headphones.
Great question. Technically "yes", it's a 4th option. That being said, headphone outputs are typically "lower quality" and audio companies don't put a lot of effort here. This is typically where they try to save money. Hearing that you notice a hiss is not surprising, these low quality headphone amps/outputs often generate a lot of hiss/noise, especially if you turn them up past 50%.

Yooo! Nice video man . Is there a way to connect ones Android phone to a audio interface . I mean can the audio recorded from a professional microphone be used as the main source for "recording" audio and not from the in built microphone of the android phone? Thanks and cheers on the videos. I am currently pursuing a post graduation in Audio Engineering and boy ... do your videos help me a ton🙌. Kyle from Audio university and Kettner creative are two channels every beginner / amateur (even pros) audio engineers should look out for.
You probably solved this. But if you use a Y splitter. Go onto your phone recorder app. When you plug the splitter into your phone, make sure the recorder app is already open. Then also make sure the 2 female mic and headphones connections dont have anything connected to them yet. The screen should show that you're using an external mic source now, not the phones built in mic.
Hey I wanna record video that don't need a mix. I wanna record a DJ and the audio from they music he'll be playing, although they gonna be main speakers at the event, I just wanna record the full Audio quality and video only
Any suggestions for a fairly cheap camera or camcorder? My main goal is to have drum mics into a video to avoid the hassle of synchronizing one video track and one audio.
When you are at an event and you turn down the volume control on the channel.. it also reduces the volume of the main out. If you understand what i mean!
I was trained to never, ever use a splitter cable to combine signals as you're suggesting with your second method workaround. A splitter cable is made to split signals. A combining cable is meant to combine signals.
Voice over Actor 0 seconds ago I have a brand new Yamaha mixer it was working fine.. A few days ago I turned it on to voice a commercial and I could barley hear anything.. Aha, I've been cooking up another completely unrelated channel. The plan is to keep doing both from now on. Took some initial setup time though.
Hey! Good to see you 👍
Thanks, good to be back.
I have Nikon z30 and it doesn't have audio input. It has only Mic input. Is there a way I can get the external audio without noise to my video?
Another excellent how to. Thanks!
Very welcome!
How to record audio to DSLR if nothing is given to you from mixer. Can you use speakers to get audio. Please help.
Seriously this is great
Glad you liked it.
thank you very much for this valuable info
You are welcome
Can I use a focusrite 212 as camera audio interface?
Yes you can. We have a video on that specifically.
Yooo! Nice video man . Is there a way to connect ones Android phone to a audio interface . I mean can the audio recorded from a professional microphone be used as the main source for "recording" audio and not from the in built microphone of the
android phone? Thanks and cheers on the videos.
I am currently pursuing a post graduation in Audio Engineering and boy ... do your videos help me a ton🙌. Kyle from Audio university and
Kettner creative are two channels every beginner / amateur (even pros)
audio engineers should look out for.
Sony ZV-1F
@@kettnercreative Thanks, but even lower, for example would a Canon Eos Rebel T100 work
Do you need an audio interface to connect a video camera to a mixer or can I connect a camera directly to the mixer?
The last option in this video shows you how to connect directly.
That helped a lot.
Can you connect a male 3.5mm to male 6.5mm cable and connect male 6.5mm to chanel1 with phantom power to the mixer and male 3.5mm cable to the camara🎉
Ermmm if I have a rane one controller which input is my XLR going to go into?
We have a whole bunch of DJ videos coming out soon. I just need to get rid of this cough so I can film them!
Great video!
Thank you so much
Keep the videos coming
Thanks, will do!
why you not control volume mic with the volume control in line 1 ??
When you are at an event and you turn down the volume control on the channel.. it also reduces the volume of the main out. If you understand what i mean!
@@ganapathi.kamath oh i get it
Exactly! Thanks Ganapathi
I was trained to never, ever use a splitter cable to combine signals as you're suggesting with your second method workaround. A splitter cable is made to split signals. A combining cable is meant to combine signals.
I still have noise even when the volume is all the way down?
Voice over Actor

I have a brand new Yamaha mixer it was working fine.. A few days ago I turned it on to voice a commercial and I could barley hear anything.. When I put the volume up the mic sounds all distorted and there is a cracking sound coming out of the speakers and headphones.. I never changed anything and everything is plugged in the same as it was.. I used it one night it was working fine and the next day when I turned everything back on I had that problem. I thought it might of been settings in my computer but I tried everything and I tried it on a different computer and it's the same thing! Can anyone help??
Does This mixer NoT have a "" Record Out"" Jack's?????😮
