what is the impact of this phaser lockout kit on horsepower torque emissions and reliability? have a 2004 F150 5.4 liter 3 valve that has the cam phaser problem oddly enough on the driver side Bank and I am trying to determine the best fix for it.
Vs a failed phaser often people give us feedback of improved power and economy. As for emissions, our system is actually carb legal for up to 2010. On the front of reliability, this permanently addresses the cam phaser issue making it impossible to fail the vct system ever again.
Would you recommend this for high horsepower applications? I want to build a 5.4l triton with a turbo but i am scared that the stock cam phasers won't be able to handle the power
Im getting ready to order soon! do I need the tune? i didn't think so as the tune only makes it better right? And im not sure I am ready to spend 600 dollars on that.
Since Im making a hobby of fixing these engines, can I use the tuner on multiple repairs? Or does it need to stay plugged in to the truck that's repaired? Also, I seem to find broken chain guides and blown out tensioners every time so the front cover is coming off regardless...
+Fabian F The advantage is removing a well documented design flaw from the engine for those more concerned with durability and in-service life while keeping repair costs down. As of now the only way to properly retain VCT is to just rebuild the engine to factory specifications every time the engine wears down enough to cause the system to fail. Considering some trucks have this happen in under 50k miles, you ca see how expensive this can be. Being there is negligible loss in power or economy ~700 once is far better than ~7000 every few years or less.
+Livernois Motorsports If the low idle locking pin is causing the "ticking noise" problem, wouldn't it be better to create a remanufactured and improved cam phaser, so the improved low rpm torque is retained by having full functionality of the cam phaser system?
+Fabian F Actually since the vct system makes the most torque by being in the fully advanced position, disabling it does nothing to the low end torque. Additionally since the engine itself is the cause of the vct system failing, you'd need to completely reengineer the base functionality of the vct system. Being the original design cost millions of dollars, and was flawed, engineering an improved offering could easily match the original's cost, without the economics of scale helping offset the price per unit. This could mean phasers that cost more than a whole new engine costs, which to be completely honest almost no one would buy.
If I buy this lockout kit how long will installation take and will the tuner make my CEL go away or no? Will i lose any power installing this kit and do you think the kit is worth the money? Any long-term reviews from your 3v 5.4 customers with this kit installed? Thanks..
Typically the install takes less than a business day, and the tuner does address the fault codes related to the vct system. Of course if your vehicle has other faults, those codes will remain. As for power, most report back a noticeable improvement in power over a failed system. As for being worth the money, of course we feel it is. Especially given the fact that most temporary fixes start out at double the money, and ours permanently fixes it. As for customer testament, being we've offered this kit for nearly 10 years feedback is definitely out there, but the biggest testament is that most repair shops that install a customer supplied kit end up ordering multiple kits for stock.
My 2008 F-150 (5.4L) runs great while cruising around but as soon as its hot (thinner oil?), it starts to knock, rattle and jerk while sounding like you threw a handfull of loose bolts and nuts into the motor at idle or very low RPM. It's technically possible, but of course, it will end up eventually failing the phasers again. You'd have to remove the lockouts, and remove the calibration changes.

Ive heard people leave followers in and they just mash the cam down instead of removing the followers. This is my first time working on the motor so I just want to make sure what Ive been reading wont give me any trouble.
You can have the followers installed, and then slowly tighten the cam caps down in an even sequence, just a little bit at a time, working the cam slowly into position, while making sure not to allow too much pressure to exist on any one cap at a time.
edgar goicoechea The engine definitely runs better with the lockout system than with the failed VCT system. Most customers report that the engine runs smoother than it ever has. most also note almost no change in efficiency with the locked out system, and usually report a substantial improvement over a failed system.
I just had this done on my 2004 f150 and now I get terrible gas mileage. Is there anything I can do with the programming of my truck to at least get some of it back?
+Joe Bowyer Joe, if your fuel economy dropped off substantially, we would recommend going back over the install. Often times we have seen people put one lockout in backwards, causing a severe drop off
Sorry guys a read the answer further down the page I also have another question I am in Australia and we have this engine in an Australian LTD it has multipoint fuel injection will the tune kit you supply work ?
not at all, the spring does not operate the phaser, it is only there to help dampen movement. The phaser is oil controlled as as an engine naturally ages, the oil pressure drops. Once it drops below a certain point, the phaser can no longer properly function. There is still plenty of rpessure for the engine to live a long, happy life, just not operate the phaser. So the lockout removes that issue.
Do I have to buy the tuner with the full kit, or can I just buy the lockouts with the timing chain wedge and phaser bolts and then have a mechanic disable the VCT system so I don't need to pay so much? Or is there something special about your tune that I need.
Because the vct system in these us problematic and unreliable, which can cause severe engine damage. This is the only proper way to prevent this from happening.
I've heard, though I'm not certain it makes perfect sense, that if you use a stethoscope on the valve cover you can determine the location of the noise -- and if it's at the top and the front of the valve train, it's normally the phasers.
Hello, I have a problem with a 2008 F150 5.4L 3V. First problem, when in cold and starting the motor sound a chain noise, the technician said that is a CHAIN TENSIONER on the passenger side. Second problem, it thrown a P0022 code (INT CAM POSITION TIMING OVER RET BAN 2), its misfiring the passenger side and the technician said maybe is a phaser... The truck was repaired of a time chain kit 2 months ago... those problems I have sounds awful and the motor starts to vibrate... I saw a lot of videos on youtube that adjudicates the problems to VCT Solenoids... and maybe could be those, but I´m not sure... What do you think? Could those Phaser Locks help to solve my problems??? For what are those made for??? What are they improvement for the motor or what is the benefits? Hope you can help me with this!! Thank you!
steelelake Our lockout kit comes with the lockouts, new cam phaser bolts, timing chain wedge tool, and the tuner to reprogram the vehicle to accommodate the deletion of the variable cam timing system.
Why blocks the cam phaser in the retard position, which removes torque and increases fuel consumption for normal driving? Retarded the cam timing gives more power at high revs but takes away some at low revs so why lock it late? ??
+Jackie Chan the VCT system doesn't advance these cams, it retards them. And since the VCT system fails, making it unable to control the cam timing at all, No, it's not pointless. These run very poorly when the VCT system fails, along with running a high risk of damaging the engine, so the locked out cam timing is far superior to that of uncontrolled cam movement.
+Jackie Chan There is no "repair" for the phasers to keep them active. Even replacing every single part of this system only provides a temporary solution. Sometimes the noise returns within hours. That's why our lockout system is the only true way to permanently repair the noise.
As a ford tech it is very rare that people need to replace the phasers more than once if they use a ford part. The phaser rests at a full advance position(not a zero), if you are removing the phaser just replace it. Most ford techs and high end techs at independent shops laugh at this process because it only seems like backyard mechanics do it.
+chuy gonzalez The tuner can scan, and clear codes, and it does address the codes that come up when the VCT system fails, but it does not effect the diagnostic functions of the computer outside of that.
But that"s not all... You guys aren't charging $699 for a couple wedges of aluminum and two bolts. You are charging all that money for the ability to flash your own computer. Where is the info on how to do that in this video?
This was not intended to show that part, as we have other videos that cover it. We are also in the midst of creating a video that shows this in vehicle as well
Apparently not, I read you should lockout in advance position, but all the videos I've seen they are locking out in the base position, otherwise there would be no reason at all you would leave the pin in, super confusing, but i locked mine out at base position with no issue, however if your tensioner's are bad your chain will slap, and if you look at the install, it confirms it's lockout in base timing position.
The timing on my 2006 5.4L is having spark advance issues. The timing under load is 3 to 4 points off. Under idle, the timing is normal. Will locking out the phasers address this issue?
The phasers can impact ignition timing, but usually not to the amount you are describing. they control cam timing mostly, and then ignition timing can changed based off of where cam timing ends up. so you'd need to look at desired vs actual camshaft timing to know.

What is the benefit of locking this out? What ignition do you use with it? Thanks
It end all the grief with the variable timing. No more solenoid or phaser replacement. Comes with a tuner
How much is the kit for a 2010 f150 5.4? The non emissions compliant one?
We only offer these in the emissions compliant form
BIG QUESTION LOCKING THE PHASER WILL MAKE CAM TO BE WITHOUT MOVEMENT, AND DO THE ENGINE RUNS BETTER OR LESS EFFICIENT
edgar goicoechea The engine definitely runs better with the lockout system than with the failed VCT system.
Often times we have seen people put one lockout in backwards, causing a severe drop off
not backwards, but the programmer has two modes. which one is best?
+Joe Bowyer There is only one mode. Stock, or tuned. It requires the tuned option.
Is good for engine 3.6 traverse ?
No. This is only for a Ford 4.6/5.4 24V V8
Hi sorry for the question but can I just fit these lock out and drive without any tunning ?
Sorry guys a read the answer further down the page I also have another question I am in Australia and we have this engine in an Australian LTD it has multipoint fuel injection will the tune kit you supply work ?
Les Groom It is not recommended to do so as it will always be running in a fault condition
Les Groom It may take some additional steps to support the vehicle, but yes we can.
And the reason for putting Lockouts on the phasers is what it seems the springs brake real easy .is this the reason?
not at all, the spring does not operate the phaser, it is only there
to help dampen movement. The phaser is oil controlled as as an engine
naturally ages, the oil pressure drops. Once it drops below a certain
point, the phaser can no longer properly function. There is still
plenty of rpessure for the engine to live a long, happy life, just not
operate the phaser. So the lockout removes that issue.
quiero un kit de estos para mi carro donde lo compro y cuanto cuesta?
Octavio Romo en ebay como 60 dólares
Does this have to be done to the other side as well?
Yes it does
Are these Ford factor phasers or can you use aftermarket phaser's
Nole Hopkins We have solutions for the OEM Ford and dorman phasers.
Do I have to buy the tuner with the full kit, or can I just buy the lockouts with the timing chain wedge and phaser bolts and then have a mechanic disable the VCT system so I don't need to pay so much? Or is there something special about your tune that I need.
Yes, it is recommended to buy the tuner with the kit.
@@LivernoisMotorsports I dont believe you answered his question. Wouldn't a custom tune with vct function disable suffice?
after you put thise lockout you actually cancelled the vvt system? why you did that?
Because the vct system in these us problematic and unreliable, which can cause severe engine damage. This is the only proper way to prevent this from happening.
@@LivernoisMotorsports thanks
where can I buy this

will this stop all the noise ? squeaking nocking ect
Knocking, so long as it's from the phaser, yes. Squeaking sounds like a completely different issue.
its coming from right where the phaser is. would the cam squeak ?@@LivernoisMotorsports
its the power steering pump.... appreciate it. i will call about the lockouts because a brand new ford phaser is knocking on bank 1
@@TheSeangerber Sounds good!
@@TheSeangerber Typically not, unless there's some damage from loss of oil flow.
Looks a lot easier with the engine on the hoist and no wires and pipes in the way! First remove the engine, then the valve covers...
Do you lock out both phasers or just 1
Both
my truck has a lot of noise, this can solve my problem?
+Juan Pablo Montemayor Garcia If your engine noise is due to the cam phaser system, then yes!
I've heard, though I'm not certain it makes perfect sense, that if you use a stethoscope on the valve cover you can determine the location of the noise -- and if it's at the top and the front of the valve train, it's normally the phasers.
While that is a good thing to do, and can eliminate certain things as an issue, these are almost always a phaser issue.
Thank you!
It definitely sounds like it's in need of our cam phaser lockout system.
What does he mean by “newer models” i have an 07 f150
Why wouldn't you just install a new phaser?
Because they fail again, but typically in a very short time. Most people that buy our kit have put 3-4 timing sets on their truck
Do you need to replace the phaser if you are going to install your kit?
Only if there is physical damage to the phaser. However, that is rare, but you should always inspect it especially in the area of the dowel pin.
Who flashes the ecm for check engine light after your install?
steelelake Our lockout kit comes with the lockouts, new cam phaser bolts, timing chain wedge tool, and the tuner to reprogram the vehicle to accommodate the deletion of the variable cam timing system.
Is it possible to install this without having to removing the engine?
No engine removal needed
Indeed it is, this package was designed to be installed in the vehicle.
Lockout
Why blocks the cam phaser in the retard position, which removes torque and increases fuel consumption for normal driving? Retarded the cam timing gives more power at high revs but takes away some at low revs so why lock it late? ??
This doesn't. This locks it in the fully advanced, or "zero retard" position
Wouldnt this just cause it to not advance and thats pointless it seems better to have it
+Jackie Chan the VCT system doesn't advance these cams, it retards them. And since the VCT system fails, making it unable to control the cam timing at all, No, it's not pointless. These run very poorly when the VCT system fails, along with running a high risk of damaging the engine, so the locked out cam timing is far superior to that of uncontrolled cam movement.
Ok, well then would it be better to just repair it?
+Jackie Chan There is no "repair" for the phasers to keep them active. Even replacing every single part of this system only provides a temporary solution. Sometimes the noise returns within hours. That's why our lockout system is the only true way to permanently repair the noise.
As a ford tech it is very rare that people need to replace the phasers more than once if they use a ford part. The phaser rests at a full advance position(not a zero), if you are removing the phaser just replace it. Most ford techs and high end techs at independent shops laugh at this process because it only seems like backyard mechanics do it.
like turning off the light check engine ??
Are you asking if this would address the check engine light associated with phaser failure? If so, then yes. It indeed does.
but code fail in engine eraser???
+chuy gonzalez The tuner can scan, and clear codes, and it does address the codes that come up when the VCT system fails, but it does not effect the diagnostic functions of the computer outside of that.
But that"s not all... You guys aren't charging $699 for a couple wedges of aluminum and two bolts. You are charging all that money for the ability to flash your own computer. Where is the info on how to do that in this video?
This was not intended to show that part, as we have other videos that cover it. We are also in the midst of creating a video that shows this in vehicle as well
I install the lock outs then the vct solenoid stack open and check light is on code p0011 and p0021 what can I do
+PASCUAL MARTINEZ Did you purchase our entire kit with tuner and all? If so, did you ensure the programmer said "programming successful"?
Si le pongo esto a mí troca lobo 2004 deja de hacer ese ruido como sitrajera una matraca
Is good for engine 3.6 traverse ?
Does this lock the cam timing in the fully advanced position?
