Mine did this today exactly like the beginning of the video the red light appeared then couldnt drive anymore stopped on the side of the road for 15 min and drove 10km back home without problem and 5 hours later drove another 5km and still no problems could it be the thermostat or its still water pump
Same exact problem i have with my 2007 BMW 328xi. It literally started yesterday while driving and had to pull over and get towed cause i was afraid to drive back This video is incredibly helpful! I hope its the same issue as yours and just have to replace the water pump.
Once the car hits close to 100k miles you need to do a set of refresh parts, thermostat and water pump should be done together as they are next to each other. Main belt, alternator, starter, battery, spark plugs and coils, upper and lower coolant hoses, front control arms, brake rotors, cabin and intake filters should be changed. DIY will cost you a third less than going to the stealership. This overhaul cost me roughly 4k.
+YG H 2006 BMW 325i....Yepp I paid 1100 just for all those parts. I did my belt, alternator, battery, coolant hoses, water pump thermostat, control arms/ tire rods, air filters, brakes/rotors/pads/brake pad sensors, all myself. And i paid a local BMW specialized shop to do my starter, plugs, and coils. Since i bought the parts myself and did most of it DIY. It set me back a swell $2000. I have a 2004 BMW 330i as well and I prefer that over the e90 cause buying a water pump and thermostat for $375 wasn't fun vs the $25 e46 mechanical pump. Plus the DIY on the e46 is a bit easier. And regardless of what you own it'll still be expensive to get work done at the stealership.
I wanted to say thank you. I think you've helped me figure out what is wrong with my 2007 335i - I'm having exactly the same issue - no leaks and cooling fan starts up quickly when cold. I'll check the cable connection first :)
Mine just went out today, fan has been going off a lot the past few days before it finally gave in, if your fan is going crazy when the engine is cold that’s a sign!!
my 2007 328xi over heated on the hwy in MN. I limped it to a nearby mechanic I found on Google maps. Turned out it was the water pump. repair ended up costing me $1100. I have only had the car 3 months but this repair spooked me and I don't know if I can afford to keep this

Fortunately the water pump on my 2006 330i went out while under warranty. I was surprised that it went out so quickly as I have three other vehicles (Ford, Chevy & Infiniti) with many more miles on them and have not had a water pump issue with them. I wonder how long this pump will last?
Thanks your videos are not long. Most of them are so short or sped up that they’re not enough information. Yours is just right. sometimes there’s 30 and 45 minute videos they get a little bit long and the tooth. Considering I’ve messed with this stupid problem for three weeks after replacing thermostat and water pump and it still overheats I turn on the car it blows hot air for a while, then hotter stops somehow, and the car begins to overheat.. there are four fuses that control this stupid electric water pump. Will it operate but somewhat in effectively without one of the fuses being funnctional. My next step is to Check each of those four fuses.
This just happened to me at the light in my ‘07 BMW 335i convertible. It definitely went into safe mode and I had to pull over but I started losing power and now the car won’t start. Had to have it towed to a mechanic. Tried charging it with a battery and as soon as we took it off the car shut off again. Hopefully we will know the issue tomorrow.
HI Im having the same problem with my beamer 06. Its overheating and the fan speeds fast and loud. What could resolve the problem? If you know, please share!! Thank you!
I just replaced the water pump in 2008 BMW 328xi E90. After this, I noticed that every now and then I will get the over heating icon on my dash, and the fan will spin up really fast. If I try to run a cooling system bleed when I pull over, the pump does not work, but when I unplug the battery, wait a few minutes, and then plug it back in, the car goes back to normal and does not overheat. Any ideas?
Not surprised your car with such low miles is already having problems. Our BMW ownership experience was about the same -- car was always in the shop! As a person who works on his own cars these cars are not built to last (plastic crap everywhere) much past the lease/warranty. After that, god help the next owner.

Just call them. Easier. I bought other stuff too, antifreeze, drip pan, no leak fill system. And some silicone grease. Too easy :)
Hello how are you doing? Very good video. I ask you, I did the test but it doesn't work for me, the mechanic tells me that the pump burned (for the second time), I changed it a little over 1 year ago, it has not even traveled 20,000 km with that pump. Can you think what else could it be? The car heats up and I found that I had blown the lid off the water reservoir. I appreciate any comments. It's a 2005 BMW 330i E90 N52
Hi... i hope you can help. First thing in the morning when i use my car, it brings out the orange and then red overheating signal and fan goes on. When i stop it, let it cool, open coolant to check level its really low and some of it has spilt out from somewhere close to lid but not through lid. I add coolant, and the rest of my journeys after it works fine. The overheating only happens with the first journey of the day. It heats up after travelling only about 2miles.
This video has been an excellent help. I ran into exact same problem today. Mine is a e92 325 coupe. Planning to look at temp sensor first otherwise change electric water pump and thermostat. Did you upload video once it was fixed? Thanks a lot for such a great video.

Today driving 70 mph all of a sudden I lost power, was not able to accelerate. Yellow then Red low coolant light came on. I pulled up on the side luckily I was driving on the slow lane. Turned my ac off. Turned my car off. Opened the hood with coolant vapors coming out of the side. Then waited for the car to cool down and slowly drove home taking local roads. Had to stop twice to get rid of the yellow warning sign. What is going on and what do I need to do?
i got a 630i e63 i keep getting over heating problems??? somebody told me to bleed the coolant system my water cap is shot, but i will have air locks any advice on how to bleed the system pls????
With the door open, do not close it during the process. Key on, engine off. Turn heat to max, with fan on lowest speed. The DME will cycle the water pump on and off for 12 minutes. Once should be sufficient for bleeding air, but run it twice for peace of mind.\
Thank you. Just had this problem happen to me this morning. Had it towed to the shop and they think it is a problem with the turbo fan. Their specialist is coming in, in the morning to look at it. Hoping he realizes it is the water pump and not a fan problem. I will talk with him and have him check out things I have found (including this) on this problem.
07 335i less then 1 year owned Masssssive problems back to back.. this just happened to me last night after i changed 3 and 4 position coils with plugs.. i cant do it with this vehicle...
Bro, my 328i 2007 did the same thing. but I did the bleed test too I see the water squirt circulation.. does that mean that the pump is still okay? maybe my thermostat is bad but its not throwing a code for that
when the water pump is not working no more and cause overheating, then the red sign show on the, my 2008 bmw 335i slow down, and there was no respond on the gas when i applied, the car just moving like it in neutral mode... IS it water pump problem or the transmission problem.... I just changed the transmission Fluid & filter....But still overheating again....I tried to activate the water pump and see no stream on the overflow coolant...the fan running most of the time, and so noise...please tell me what's happened to my car, thanks Beamer Fantatics
Dennis Ho i have 2008 335i it does exactly the same, fan over speed and overheating and won’t go fast as usual when the overheating indicator comes on , any tips or ideas
Hey can I ask you a question? I recently bought a 328i 07 sedan with 117k miles and the dealer told me and showed me the receipts of them fixing the thermostat and the pump and not even 3 days and I never stepped on it and on the 3rd day I drove it maybe half a mile and sat on my drive way and turned off the a/c and the fan came on quick and started to work faster then the red overheat signal came on and I quickly turned the car off. Then I sat for 4 mins turned it on again and the fan still came on but I quickly drove it inside my garage and called about the over heat and they told me to bring it to the shop and the mechanic told me the pump isn't getting any connection to the computer then he went and replace the pump with a new one and now he can't find the fuze or wire to the pump should I just take it back?
Other things like a bad radiator fan can cause the engine to overheat. Is the radiator fan in your car running? Are there any coolant leaks in the hoses?
i have similar symtems. z4 3.0i overheats fairly quickly which leaves me to believe water pump. but my coolant light is on and im not leaking coolant and check engine light is on also no heat in cabin. the codes read a bad temp sensor and a bad ambient temp sensor. could the sensors cause this alone or water pump and sensors? thanks for the video.
I wish you had mentioned how to test both parts before concluding it's in fact the water pump. I have the same issue right about now. Thanks for what I did learn through this though...
I had a diagnostic ran on my 2006 325i and the returns codes were P1407 and P1408, meaning there's and issue with my Fuel level sensor. Do you know what this mean. Should i replace my fuel pump or just the sensors?
Fuel level sensor is just that, it sends a signal ussually via a level at the fuel pump to display how much fuel u have in your tank, ussually the fuel level arm and fuel pump are one, not sure how bmw does it though
@@heyitschinoable Fuel sender is under drivers back seat and the wires eventually corrode off the PC board. You just replace that. Should have fixed your fuel level.
hey i changed my water pump but i left my thermostat what happens is when i accelerate i dont get the same power i used to have its like my turbos doesnt have power does anybody knows whats happening its a 135i 2010 n54
Eduardo Contreras Did you get resolution to this? I'm experiencing the same... did this clear up or did you end up changing thermostat, something else? Thanks.
Neither the waterpump or Thermostat being replaced should not have affected your boost and speed. You would be getting the check engine light and loss of boost pressure going into limp mode.
Hey man, I have the same car and I’m having problem with my cooling fan. I just replaced the cooling fan, new radiator, new coolant temperature sensor, new fuses for the fan and I’m waiting for the relay to come but I was also wondering if your car has the lower radiator hose sensor because I also ordered one for my car but when I was going to replace it my car dint had one.
I have the same problem just last night it was overheating and I stopped and pulled over. Good thing was right next to my house so I waited about 12 hours later. I went to my car started, but it didn’t make that loud engine loud fan noise when I first started it up, but it did do that when it was overheating and I did check the engine coolant on the engine, coolant tank and it still was good level like I thought it would be empty, but it’s not hopefully it’s not a big Problem. I’m getting sick in my car now there’s always something wrong with my freaking battery drainage. Every other day does a battery drainage and I got a jumpstart my car every two or three days now it’s this freaking overheating thing. I have a 2011 BMW 328i series3 my car is giving me a headache can’t wait to get this fixed and I’m gonna sell this darn car and get me a truck or something
Hi I have a 2012 128i E88 N51 motor and was crashed and is fixed now I just can't figure out why the car overheats. I check the fuses and some of the fuses are not working or power check when I test it, but the fuses are good. I checked all the fuses under the Glove compartment. Is there a ground or a master or main fuse that is hidden somewhere to help solve my problem and suggestions would help anyone PLEASE and thanks.
Once a BMW hits close to 100k miles, get rid of it right away and opt for a Japanese car with aluminum mechanical water pump and aluminum thermostat housing. Look for Nathan's DIY garage and watch the videos of BMW coolant and oils leaks.
I feel sad and sorry for people who buy the E90"s series BMW"s. One of the worst,if not the worse BMW has ever engineered and produced! The only people who would buy these junks are ones, that are obsessed with the year production, and who blindly believe, that the newer, the better. Well my friend, now you got newer model car with electric water pump, electric steering, which fails often, and bunch of crappy plastic components under the hood. Oh,and cheap interior too. That model is the ugliest and shittiest from all BMW has ever made. I would rather have well maintained and serviced E46 or E39 ( what i have),than few years newer, but uglier and shittier E90.
be carefull i did a funtional test and it work intermitent(this means bad pump) it draw to much amperage and it sutdown modulo if you tested outside the car test good also, new pump runs constant under funtional test,

Can anyone help? My over heat symbol came on, I had radiator flushed, still happening, but I stop car, turn off engine, turn car back on and she drives fine, happens twice a day, is it the thermostat? If it was water pump it would never let me continue to drive, shit is costing me big money
+Jorge Nunez DYI? whats that mean. im getting ready to just replace the thermostat idont believe its the water pump too. i got the water pump under warrenty

Had to stop twice to get rid of the yellow warning sign. What is going on and what do I need to do?
welcome to the club....I brought a water pump and thermostat but didn't install it yet....it could be a electrical/fuse ....I need as well
The same thing happened to me but not on the highway on local streets.
i got a 630i e63 i keep getting over heating problems??? somebody told me to bleed the coolant system my water cap is shot, but i will have air locks any advice on how to bleed the system pls????
With the door open, do not close it during the process.
Key on, engine off. Turn heat to max, with fan on lowest speed.
The DME will cycle the water pump on and off for 12 minutes.
Once should be sufficient for bleeding air, but run it twice for peace of mind.\
Just realized the video is from 2013 lol your car is long gone by now?...
2009 335i with 148k miles. Have repairEd EVERYTHING. You can ask me anything.
Damn, just happened to me this morning. Thanks for the video
Did you replace your own waterpump or pay to have done?
@dogwatcher144 I paid to have it done. It was a few years ago but I believe it was about 1200 parts and labor
I replaced my water pump and thermostat but I still have overheating indicator.. can you help
Check the sensors
@asif nadeem what did you do to fix problem
Asif?
Experiencing this right now in my 2007 335i. Thanks for the info
It's been 3 years now how is it car doing and what was the problem?
07 335i less then 1 year owned Masssssive problems back to back.. this just happened to me last night after i changed 3 and 4 position coils with plugs.. i cant do it with this vehicle...
My Son has a 2004 745iL over heating problem can this fix be applied to this Model also
Bro, my 328i 2007 did the same thing. but I did the bleed test too I see the water squirt circulation.. does that mean that the pump is still okay? maybe my thermostat is bad but its not throwing a code for that
Yes it will not throw a code
No tempetarure gauge? Wow those german engineers are at it again 😅😅😅
LOL
So what fixed your problem? TIA
Mine doing the same thing
How did you fix yours? Water pump!!!
Alsle Le I just replace the water pump to fix the problem
when the water pump is not working no more and cause overheating, then the red sign show on the, my 2008 bmw 335i slow down, and there was no respond on the gas when i applied, the car just moving like it in neutral mode...
YES ASAP. These cars are real sensitive on the Computer and sensors
I did change w/pump and temperature sensor, still the same problem. Don't you think that it is inside the engine something going wrong?
Did you remove all the air bubbles from the cooling system
Other things like a bad radiator fan can cause the engine to overheat. Is the radiator fan in your car running? Are there any coolant leaks in the hoses?
i have similar symtems. z4 3.0i overheats fairly quickly which leaves me to believe water pump. but my coolant light is on and im not leaking coolant and check engine light is on also no heat in cabin. the codes read a bad temp sensor and a bad ambient temp sensor. could the sensors cause this alone or water pump and sensors? thanks for the video.
Temperature sensor or thermostat
2:23 PS4 Starting Up
I wish you had mentioned how to test both parts before concluding it's in fact the water pump. I have the same issue right about now.
Thanks for what I did learn through this though...
I have the same problem too
I had a diagnostic ran on my 2006 325i and the returns codes were P1407 and P1408, meaning there's and issue with my Fuel level sensor.
What would fix the camshaft timing over-advanced problem?
Jr 559 Remove your camshaft sensors and clean them out and change the oil of your vehicle.
@@BeamerFanaticsE39E90 I did both
You mean the VVT solenoids at the front of the engine?
hey i changed my water pump but i left my thermostat what happens is when i accelerate i dont get the same power i used to have its like my turbos doesnt have power does anybody knows whats happening its a 135i 2010 n54
Eduardo Contreras Did you get resolution to this? I'm experiencing the same... did this clear up or did you end up changing thermostat, something else? Thanks.
i changed the thermostat but didnt get the power back im fixing vanos now
@@chuy7able what happened ? 5 years later lol update ?
Ronnie Shih or just fix it ? wth
Get a Lexus!!!
Good video n tips. Thank you
Thanks for the video...the longer the more info.
2009 535i 58k miles same problem. indy shop charged me $940... diagnostics, waterpump, thermostat + labor and tax
It cost me 350 doing it myself
Where did you get a water pump so cheap?
From a BMW shop. not a BMW dealership
That gives me good prices. It is a $600 waterpump
Good deal!
U.K. Version does this work mate???
Yes
I feel sad and sorry for people who buy the E90"s series BMW"s. One of the worst,if not the worse BMW has ever engineered and produced! The only people who would buy these junks are ones, that are obsessed with the year production, and who blindly believe, that the newer, the better. Well my friend, now you got newer model car with electric water pump, electric steering, which fails often, and bunch of crappy plastic components under the hood. Oh,and cheap interior too. That model is the ugliest and shittiest from all BMW has ever made. I would rather have well maintained and serviced E46 or E39 ( what i have),than few years newer, but uglier and shittier E90.
my cars leaking radiator fluid..what do u think it could be!! please get at me
+Anthony Garcia You can't diagnose a car over the internet. It oculd be many things. Use your eyes and look. If you can't then take it to a mechanic.
It's probably leaking
Safe mode keeps the engine from blowing my 740i did this once you have to reset the computer after the repair
be carefull i did a funtional test and it work intermitent(this means bad pump) it draw to much amperage and it sutdown modulo if you tested outside the car test good also, new pump runs constant under funtional test,
I just change my water pump and thermostat check all fuses but car is still running hot.
Glad I work for an auto parts store. I pay half of that and oem parts from worldpac
Nice
Did know that I had to buy whole thermostat assembly. What a rip off but at 32.67 I can't complain
+Beamer Fanatics E39 E90 Next time dont be a poser and buy Lexus or Infiniti. You will save yourself some time and cash.
+S.T T. Lexus is a toyota, infinity is nissan. bmw is a bmw
What is the name of that sensor? I can't find it on my 2008 335i
If it's the lower radiator hose sensor you do not have one.
Nice , very informative
hey i have a 335i im having the same problem but mine is losing all the water in the radiator pretty fast, somebody told me that i have a blownhead gasket but i dont have any white smoke or misfired,if you can replied and help would be awesome
You might need to remove the bottom cover from the vehicle. To find out of the coolant is leaking somewhere like a holes or radiator
Hopefully you found that your coolant expansion tank had cracked and got a new one.
I changed my water pump but it's giving the same issue, I changed it a week ago.
What was your issue?
Great video thank you 🙏
Prepare yourself to replace a lot of parts of the car, it is common on BMW's. i have a 2007 since new and I've had to replace water pump, valvetronic sensor, valvetronic servomotor, compressor, evaporator, thermostat, radiator, orings, gas cap, a lot of hoses, aims, aims cover gasket, engine cover, wipers pump, and recently the differential. Pricey parts.
Just replaced my too on my e90 335i.. Shit sucks dude!!. Like $900 all together with parts and labor.. But had to b done.
You could easily do it yourself.
donde esta el relay de la bomba de agua?
En la parte superior contra el parabrisas del lado del pasajero, hay una tapa blanca con un candado, hay 2 relay de la bomba de agua ahi
You still alive ? / I’m Having the same problem but I replace the water pump now it’s still doing the same shit shows a little overheating symbol what should I do I feel like maybe you know how it’s supposed to do it by self maybe the water pump is not getting electric to the water pump maybe some one of the cables
Did you bleed out the cooling system
Repair Fanatic ? No but I’ll ask my bro what else could it be ?
Electrical problem going inside the pump?
@@2sergiovargas air bubbles can cause random overheating if the engine is not bled properly
@@2sergiovargas if it's a new water pump most likely not.
i had the same problem before. if the engine is burning hot, it is the water pump.
thank you for the video
New thermostat and waterpump and youre good to go for another 200,000 miles.
'07 335xi, 56000 miles...water pump failure
$1050 repa birill at independent shop
Thanks for the info
I have the same problem... Yellow and red warning and the fast rotating fan when I turn on engine... :(
did you figure out the issue because I have the same problem
+30guarino I changed the water pump and now my car is OK!!!! It was the pump... It's easy to change the pump... I raised my car with a jack and I changed my water pump
+Alessio Villani thanks buddy....I brought a water pump and thermostat but didn't want to go through installation if it was something minor
+30guarino If you search in TH-cam there's a tutorial how to change that pump... This tutorial is very very simple!!!!
Could be heat exchanger leak
The longer the better
water pump not to difficult to replace.
Joel Reyes Do it yourself. It is not a hard fix. 400 dollars for a new water pump on ecs tuning. And i'm sure you can find a DIY for it.
how can i call you
Can anyone help? My over heat symbol came on, I had radiator flushed, still happening, but I stop car, turn off engine, turn car back on and she drives fine, happens twice a day, is it the thermostat? If it was water pump it would never let me continue to drive, shit is costing me big money
Mike Balboni just change the thermo and the pump DYI, and get the parts from tischer
+Jorge Nunez DYI? whats that mean. im getting ready to just replace the thermostat idont believe its the water pump too. i got the water pump under warrenty
+kenny edgar DYI, do it yourself. Usually you change the thermo when you change the water pump. Also, if your car has got around 115-120K change the tensioner pulley and the belt tensioner with a new belt. Also, around 120K change the tranny fluid and the Diff fluid. Thank me later. Our 2009 328i has 192K miles and no tranny or engine issues.
2009 335i. 148k miles. I'm up for the pulleys and tensioner next.
With mine it's either the thermostat or the coolant temperature sensor
look for a sensor on the bottom hose of your rad. thats your problem.
