- I replace a BMW 3 series E90 water pump. This vehicle is a 2007 323, and the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 are the same. The BMW 5th Generation 3 series covers the E90, E91, E92, E93, E93. The engine in the video is a 2.5L straight 6 cylinder.

Being a new E90 Bimmer owner i often been overwhelmed or confused trying to find videos that were as infomative as this one.

Had a plastic thermostat. 2006. Had all kinds of trouble getting water pump to bleed system. Shot all electrical connections with contact cleaner and made sure all was tight. Runs like a champ now. Thank you for being so patient with your video. You are great to follow.

Yes. The pump was replaced when I realized nothing worked still. Once I did all of the cleaning underneath, it is working great. Thanks again

Great detail in this video, thanks. I'm about to attempt water pump and thermostat change on my 2008 E90 318i with 2 litre N43 engine at 131k miles here in the UK. For info, a few days after the pump failed around town, it's now working again, but I decided to deal with it before it leaves me stranded somewhere. Due to long service life I got from the original parts, I've opted for like-for-like replacements - Pierburg pump online and a thermostat from BMW dealership, just need to grab the 3 bolts and some coolant after the weekend.
Both my original and replacement thermostats are plastic and although the pump failed, I'm doing both parts at the same time. A little nervous about this as a novice DIYer, will be working on jack stands on my driveway. Thanks again for a very clear and helpful demonstration.

Finally got around to doing my water pump and everything went according to your video except my power steering bracket has a 10mm nut instead of a 8mm in your video. I keep referring to your instructions as I go. Again, great video and instructions

This is an absolute huge favor, but I’m kinda new into doing my own maintaice ( I just recently replaced my radiator and coolant system) I’m wondering if you could send a link to where I can find the right screw sizes for the pump and thermostat.

Am 77 old gram with first older BMW. This is very interesting. Replaced cracked water overflow and never bled so getting a low fluid light 1x each time (5) I’ve driven then disappears. Will bleed and check for for water flow. If light disappears 👍🏻- if not will check with Motörhead son then may or may not need pump replacement. Thnx for explaining.

The proper method to reattach clip locked hoses is to first press the clips into the lock position, then attach the hose until you hear a click. This ensures the hose is absolutely locked. If you do it like you did in the video, there is a risk of the hose not being fully locked and it may pop off in the future.
Very good call and thanks for the comment. I thought I did that in this vid, but I guess not. The biggest thing/tip to do is give them a wiggle and pull once they are on. This way if there is any doubt you know they are good. I actually push them forward and pull back so you can feel the hose start and stop, and you know its all good. Appreciate the comment :)
The bolts the hold the sway bar have a circular bolt on top and are supposed to be welded to the rest of it, one of mine wasn’t. After hours of trying to grip the circle from the top, the nut stayed stuck on, I ended up drilling it out of there. It’s crazy how the parts of these videos that take you 1.5 seconds can take me 3 hours.
Hey There, I didn't know about the factory welding. I guess I got lucky on this one as everything came apart alright. This only thing I actually fought with was the electrical clip for the waterpump, I struggled with that a bit. On my vids when I do struggle with bolts, most times I do put it in. I don't film the whole extra two hours or so, but I will put that in at like 50X speed or something like that to show the struggle is real. Glad you did get it all done and thanks for the comment.

Hey There, I think they are giving you good advice. This is one of those things where if it aint broke, don't fix it. You never know when its going to fail, so its best to wait until it does.

The water pump in my '06 330i was changed in 2016, radiator in 2020, expansion tank & cap in December 2023, thermostat this January (2024), and the corroded plastic valve connecting the coolant tube to the head gasket was replaced with an aluminum one in July.
Thee's a small leak in my radiator and my water pump drains the battery (8 amp drain) when the engine's off. Removing fuse 54 when parked stops the pump and preserves the battery.
While I obviously need to replace the radiator yet again, why's the water pump running-- beyond the 12 min bleed-- when the engine's off?
That is a bit of a puzzle. It should turn off. If you know anyone who has a bi-directional scanner they can turn the pump on and off with the scanner, and see if it responds properly.
Banger video. just picked up a 325i 2006 with under 120k on the dash. bought it for a steal only 800$!!! only issue was the water pump was bad.
I believe I did the right diagnostic by holding the pedal for 10 seconds. I saw no fluid enter the revivor and that led me to the water pump.
i a ordering the part this weekend and installing it here very soon after

Fun fact don’t put hoses on and then snap the ring down. Push the snap ring down and then push the hose on. When it clicks then you know it’s on all the way and the satisfaction factor as well with the audible click sound lol

My 335i 2008 started leaking coolant, I was told it was the electric water pump. Does that cause a coolant leak ?
Hey There, it can leak coolant so it a possibility for sure.
Check your radiator as well, I have seen leaking radiators splash coolant onto the pump making it look like it's leaking.

Just did all the hoses plus thermostat and water pump, my thermostat was plastic original and plastic new one oem, it’s a 2011, will say since I was doing all the hoses it was easier to remove the fan and just bang the job out the way, good shit tho it’s hard to make a good video working on cars I know I couldn’t

sub'd and rep'd thank you for this, I'm inheriting a 2010 328I with 93k on the clock and you made it look easy good sir. I also will keep the as long as it works don't replace it as I'm going through and proactively replacing things, spark plugs, coils ect just to make sure no issues. Also appericate the coolant information as I've got a tacoma and cx-30 and they us the premix stuff which is far easier.

My 06 had a steel thermostat. It still worked perfectly at 180k when i replaced it along w the waterpump. The OEM plastic Wahler pump barely lasted 40k until i started getting thermostat codes :/
Good to know, I did save my steel thermostat (no codes yet) but if I ever get a thermostat code I think I'm going to put my steel one back in.

Hey There, the factory pump failed and the car overheated. I wasn't sure if the thermostat was damaged so I replaced it with a new one from BMW. Interesting the new thermostat right from BMW is plastic so I could not get a metal replacement. I wonder if the new cars are all plastic? This vehicle was a 2008 I think. I agree with you the metal housing is much much better !!
So it's not a hard job necessarily, just a bit of a tight fit removing the pump and thermo. Tempting me to get an E90 330i 🤔🤔

I use to use jacks with jack stands, but it takes forever to jack up a vehicle where you can get all 4 wheels off the ground with the vehicle remaining level. Plus if you are close to a wall jacks are a pain. I have had the quick jack for over 2 years now and I love it. You saw in the video it pretty much lifts everything !!! Thanks for the reach out :)

Hey There, and thanks for the comment :) a good working water pump is necessary for the BMW as it cools the engine. If it's not working the engine will overheat and that can cause a lot of problems.

Hey there, I think there is 3 in total, there is the one at the front of the pump, then there is the thermostat group, and then the one for the housing right above the balancer if I remember correctly. I show them pretty clearly in the vid. Believe it or not the footage was over 3hrs for this job and I compressed it down to 17min !! That was the shortest I felt I could do it without skipping steps.

I think you can still get it out, but its tight. I believe one of my other viewers was able to do it, but had a few choice words afterward :)
The upper water pump fastener is difficult to see on the E60/N52, and if you're not careful enough, you can wind up removing the adjacent AC compressor bolt. Don't ask me how I know...

2011 E82 N52 plastic impeller housing, metal pump body plastic thermostat housing from the works, now nearly 70k miles just about to replace pump with Pierburg all metal and Mahle ( OE as far as I know ) Thermostat housing. Metal Thermostats dont's seem to be available at all so plastic ones are prob not an issue?
Yep,. I put a plastic one in, you can see in the video, and its still going strong. I was not able to get a metal thermostat either. I think the plastic ones must be fine.

I have a question, im owning a e90 320i n46 from 2005. Is the waterpump there not electric yet ? I tried the steps to turn it on while the engine is off but it didnt work. When its on i see its working..

Hey Thanks for the question. I believe you do have an electric waterpump as your e90 is a 5th generation but maybe the 320i doesn't? You could always call the dealer parts department and ask. They would tell you right away if its electrical. If its electric then perhaps the steps are off a bit (like time between fob activation and pressing the gas pedal)
if you go under there and your pwr sterring lines are that rusty I would DEFINITELY sand them and paint them before they get worse

I hear you, but the problem is everyone is making the thermostat out of plastic as its cheaper and no one wants to pay the extra for the all aluminum parts.

I watched another video, and the guy tried the replacement without removing the radiator fan... he complained the whole way through. lol. and also decided to remove the thermostat first... squeezing it through the very tight spave between the fan, and the chasis... I asked if removing the waterpump first would be better because it would free up more space... no answer, but that is exactly what you did... thanks for that... I am pretty sure you've saved me 30 mins to an hours... thanks

Looks like an overly difficult and complicated job for a relatively uncomplexed car
You know it, but that's the way it has to be done. I haven't found an easier way. Its actually quite easy once you do a few. Pretty straight forward. Hope you are enjoying your weekend :)

haha, well well, if you count filming then most of the day as I had to ensure I had the camera positioned to get the shots, the editing took a few hours as well. But if I didn't have to film it, then I would say 2-3 hours at a nice pace (not beating yourself up)
The aluminum thermostat housing is better than the plastic type , plastic type tends to have premature leakage
You are right for sure, problem is BMW does not make the aluminum housing anymore. If you order a replacement you get a plastic one :(
One of my bolts for the water pump was not tightened down all the way. What will that affect ?
Yikes, yup it could. It could let the pump vibrate (its on rubber mounts) and while I don't know what would happen, there is the possibility that it could rub something loose or create a wiring problem (loose or broken wire) I would fix it if you can.
OMG is that how I actually bleed the cooling system that will also check if the water pump is working correct
Yup you bet, no special tools needed. A scanner can activate the pump, but you can do it this way :)
Does driving with insufficient coolant increase the chance of water pump failure?

Broke some clips still not able to get the top bolt on the pump out super tight in there 😂super mad 😂
Take a break if you have to, I know sometimes its best to just leave it for a few hours and come back so you don't get frustrated. Believe me I know !!!!
So my coolant does pump like how yours does at the start of the video. I'm still having overheating issues, when I scan for codes I get 2E84(missing pump)? Any thoughts? I've replaced the thermostat(just throwing money didn't have a code for that) & did plenty of bleeding
How long should the bleeding take? I've read the instructions and it says about 12-15min, when I've done it it kept going over 20min?
That is really weird, your computer thinks the pump is missing, but its running....... I would check that ground connection near the pump, and give the pump connector a wiggle.
Normally bleeding should not take more than about 10min. There is a vent on the top of the reservoir on some vehicles that you can open when filling. The big thing is to look for a solid stream of fluid when the pump activates.
How is the MOSTPLUS waterpump and thermostat going?
Hey there, I think I used a Doorman as that was available at the time, they dropped it from Amazon and BMW wanted too much for a pump. I researched and the MOSTPLUS had a lot of sales and positive reviews. You can get the Doorman on the Canadian Amazon, but they raised the price to like 800, not worth it at all. The Doorman pump is still running great.

Just installed a brand new water pump after my last one failed Absolutely fine for 5 months then BOOM brand new water pump failed now i gotta DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN

Great video - gets right to the point without fluff. I just finished the same operation on my 2013 E92 SULEV and based upon the guidance provided, it was largely uneventful (!). I did have a couple of observations to pass along to help others.
* There is an electrical connector on the passenger side of the fan shroud that goes to what looks like a radiator surface temp sensor on the backside of the radiator inside the shroud. Associated with it is a pass-through bushing that loosely fits in the side of the shroud, a connector and two cable mounts. One cable mount is part of the connector body. Both mounts must be removed and the cable disconnected. The connector body mount releases from the shroud with a quarter turn. The other is a snap-in and is pried out.
* When reinstalling the fan assembly, the aforementioned bushing must be aligned in a groove in the side of the fan shroud. It’s held in place by the shroud and the radiator. If it’s not correctly aligned, the shroud won’t fit up right.
* The fan assembly has three pins that align it and hold it tight against the radiator at the bottom. It also has a slide in slot on left and right side midway up. The slot has a retention tab that must be released to slide the assembly up. All of these retention and alignment features must be correctly engaged for the assembly to fit up correctly when reassembling.
*The fan assembly has a hook feature the also retains and aligns with the chassis crossbrace along the top. If everything mentioned is properly aligned, the fan assembly drops onto the hook and the single locking T25 screw lines up. If anything isn’t just right, no dice on the screw lining up.

Another vid showing the super easy anybody can do RWD. This is not helpful to peeps doing the AWD type.
Sorry about that, but the AWD is a more rare vehicle, hard to find them around here
@@GarageKing the opposite is true here in the snow states. The RWD is hard to find around here. Anyway the AWD is a little more annoying to do. Imagine doing the oil pan gasket on one of those, lol.

I have a 2011 E93 convertible and found there is additional frame reinforcement under the engine which prevents the front sway bar from dropping as you showed. Any guidance on the best path forward there?
Hummm thats a good one, you know I have never done one on a convertible, but I have worked on other convertibles (not BMW) and when I have worked on the underside the bracing was always a bolt on, bolt off, never welded. The only thing is if you remove the bracing (if its bolted on) you have to make sure the car is jacked up squarely. I use a quick jack so there are 4 lifting points and the car is not twisted like if you jack on one side. You could try to get around the sway bar, but I'm not sure if its possible. I always lower it.
I have 2 328is and both had the metal ones both replacement came in plastic as well.

It could, but it could also mean the system is dry (has air in it) if its not properly bled.

I have a code to replace the thermostat on my 2006 325i. Should I replace the water pump while I am down there? The car has 121,000 miles and there seems to be a leak somewhere on the bottom. I have the covers off and car in the air and I can't see where it's coming from.
Good question and I would consider doing so. They are both coming out so inspect that pump very closely, if there is any signs of a leak (even 1%) I would do it as you are in there anyway and its a pretty big job. You might see some staining and thats a give away. Also your car being a 2006 with 121,000 miles, if its on the factory pump, well its probably getting near the end of its life anyway. For the leak make sure you check along the bottom of the radiator, sometimes they leak at the crimped portion (where the aluminum meets the plastic) and the coolant runs down. You could always give it a cold pressure test. Pump it up, and then come back in a few hours, pressure testers are pretty cheap amzn.to/3ZgLjMa

@@GarageKing I found the leak. The top of thermostat to cylinderhead coolant hose was leaking from underneath. I was unable to see it looking down on the motor so I crawled under while the car was running.
@@paulalan3103 Well that's a win and sounds like it was a hard leak to find, those ones are tricky and glad you found it, as that is not an easy hose to get to !!

Yes it should, procedure is the same. Very hard to tell if thermostat is failing as this type of thermostat is enclosed so its almost impossible to check. I suppose if you were creative you could submerge it in boiling water and then try to see through the housing if it opens.

@@McDzy They are actually pretty reliable, reading your earlier comment I can address the pump. To check the pump operation you can use a scanner, or the car can do a self test. @@McDzy The common tick issue is lifter noise. These vehicles also have noises from the front of the engine sometimes which can be traced back to the belt or tensioner, those are ones that I would not worry about at all. Make sure the oil is full, and you can do a check (there is not dipstick) so you use the turn signal and go through a menu. These engines get noisy with low oil. Lifter tick is usually a very light ticking that goes away and then can come back at times, and normally is not serious. If you want to make sure that it is lifter tick and not something more involved then I advise to take it to a mechanic. Hope this helps

What was the symptoms of the one you replaced? Was it able to bleed or not?
It did bleed, but it was very weak, I can't remember if I showed the before and after, that may have been at the end of the video. If I remember correctly I filmed what the pump did before, and after. I may have put it right at the front, or right near the end.
@@GarageKing It is at the end, I see it. So it wasn't overheating. I'm asking because mine doesn't bleed at all and overheating.
