    This series is saving my sanity...because NOW I understand my spouse (and children) and can have more grace for their organizing style instead of just insisting everyone is slobs because they don't follow MY organizing style. I'm definitely a bee/cricket mix. I like everything out of sight because I get way too visually stimulated and distracted if stuff is visible everywhere. But if it's out of sight, it's out of mind! I've found that clear containers or shallow containers behind closed doors (cupboards, closets, etc.) has been the best solution. No open shelving for me haha

      These comments are so interesting to me because I am definitely "out of sight, out of mind" but I worry about my home looking cluttery. I've tested as a Butterfly and a Bee, but I like the calmness of Ladybug and sometimes Cricket styles. Sometimes Cricket is a little too sterile for me, but I LOVE how a pristine countertop looks in the kitchen. I'm beginning to think some areas of my home, like the living room, I would like to be less visually stimulating and other areas, like the bathroom, need to be quick access and visual, like Butterfly.
      I also hate dusting, so I thought I was some kind of genius when I took all my special items that I had all over the living room and put them in one tall, easy to clean, glass curio cabinet, lol!

    • @DrCarolynTheLibrarian
      @DrCarolynTheLibrarian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane I've definitely found there are a few places in my home where having some stuff visible on the counter is necessary. The bathroom is one (for skincare items) and my dresser is another (jewelry and essential oils I use in a diffuser). I've figured out how to limit them to only the items I used every single day, and I have some sort of tray or unit that holds the items so they have a "home." I have limited storage in these rooms so I had to figure what what I could handle having visible all the time haha.
      I do also have decorative stuff on my coffee table and stuff, and I keep my electric water kettle on the kitchen counter because I use that thing multiple times a day! It really is so individualized and I love seeing/hearing how other people have done it in their own spaces!

      @@DrCarolynTheLibrarian I have this constant fight between wanting everything out where I can seeee because out of sight is out of mind (butterfly...) but having a low tolerance for visual mental load (...and a little ladybug). and one of the tricks that works for me is decanting stuff like hand and dish soaps and even some skin care into plain but pretty containers with ZERO ADVERTISING or even brand names on them. Still visible, still nice to look at, but not chattering at me.
      And your idea to zone things is brilliant. Here I can have stuff visible; here I can have stuff hidden. I love it!

    As a bee I felt really called out, hit the nail on the head with that one. About 5 years ago I decluttered (ie: threw away, donated or sold) SO many different items of clothes, and random stuff I’ve had laying around.. waiting for that perfect project or I could use it later. And again last year I went in my storage room and threw out a bunch of things I hadn’t looked at in years. It was freeing and really stressful at the same time.

    ”It’s okay to toss your cords” - instantly screaming here noooooope 😂😂😂 Coming from a bee with a cord tray in which there are separate clear containers for each cord. Having a macro base (cords tray) and detailed micro-organized system (separate containers) is a brain-saver for a bee. My mum is a ladybug and as a child I kept organizing her baskets 😂😂 - and she kept forgetting my organizing ”rules”. Now I live with a bee husband and we understand our systems perfectly 😂😂 But seriously, this is a big game-changer when you realize that there are four different styles and when you know your own style. Thank you Cas!

    I am so much a BEE that I almost felt as if you had a camera in my house and took pictures. I am sitting in a craft room where I now have my computer too. It is full of jewelry making stuff, sewing stuff and painting stuff. I have a muffin tin in the living room with nails and screws in it, and next to it are the little containers that will eventually hold them. I didn't even by them, they were my dad's. But you never know when you will need to fix something. My hallway has open shelves holding see through plastic containers holding legumes, rices, and whole grains. On the other side of that hallway is another cabinet, with doors, that holds large bags of legumes, rices, and whole grains. That's my overflow because you never know if prices on food will ever come down to a reasonable price again, and they last forever. And, yes, I eat this kind of stuff EVERY DAY. I've been decluttering for over a full year. But I still have two full sheds that I can't walk in, not to mention a full single car garage that I can't walk more than 5 feet into before I have to start tip toeing over large items. I took over the house my parents lived in when I was born, in which they lived in their whole marriage in 1952. There is a 30 foot model train track in the attic. I have no plans to remove it, even if I sell the house. It might be impossible to dismantle it. I'm going to keep decluttering until I can walk into the sheds, and the garage and utilize them properly. By that I mean a few bins for Christmas decorations, surplus toilet paper, and fluids for the lawn mower and the car. I figure that might take until about 2026. I do Flylady system and I am following her pretty much to the letter. My biggest problem is that I love everything I own, I have used almost everything I own within the last year, and about 95% of the time, if I held up an item in question, yes I would buy it again. I did watch, and learn from, a video on Swedish Death Cleaning. That woke me up to reality. I now know that I can't hold on to items just because I use them, love them and would buy them again. I'm decluttering with the goal of only keeping the best quality items, even if those were bought by my mother. If anyone has read this message this far, I want to say I love Cass and I have learned a lot from her and I'm so very glad that she understands the different styles of organizing and decorating. The happiest thought I had after watching her talk about Bees, is that I'm not alone as a Bee. There are many more like me. To those Bees I say don't give up. My house is looking clean and getting more organized every day.

      This is exactly like me, the only things that I tend to regret and wouldn't buy again are ironically related to storage solutions not working out *perfectly* but getting rid of those before buying something better would be counter productive.
      Death cleaning is probably so good for us Bees because it helps us to rationally weigh in more factors for why one should or shouldn't keep/collect an item and widen the perspective.

    I never knew what my organization style was, but it really thrived while working as an office secretary because I HAD to have a very well-organized, visual system for the office supplies. A file room full of real files (properly organized) was divine to me. I even took on tedious organization projects that made my coworkers' routines stupid simple once I showed it to them.
    Which is odd, because I wanted everything hid away so I can have a clutter-free visual field ... but I need to use things everyday, so stuff is always out.
    At least knowing what I am on the organization scale helps me in coming to terms with bringing my Bee style to my home. Thanks, Cass. 💜

And woe betide anyone, bosses included, who messed them up especially if they just used the hole punch willy nilly, they had to be done just right so all the pages lined up perfectly. With parents who had a home based accountancy practice and my legal background a filing cabinet just makes sense to me but must be labelled and organised.

    Wow, this video made me realize that I am a bee. Your test has me as a cricket and I immediately agreed since visual clutter stresses me out. But watching this video made me realize, that it only does when it actually is clutter that should have been decluttered or when my everyday items are not categorized. I struggled so much with decluttering for so long - it really helped me to add the decluttering question "do I want to manage this inventory" from the minimal mom.
    But I NEED my everyday items visual and accessible. In their categories - I even sort our toddler's playfood by food groups, including separating fruits and vegetables in separate baskets 😆
    My husband is a butterfly and of course so is our toddler. Our solution is baskets everywhere. No lids and either shallow or see-through. This way my family can just dump everything in the baskets and still see everything. However, I also have small baskets and containers inside the bigger baskets to follow my inner bee without them having to go by my crazy many categories 😊

    • @blaireshoe8738
      @blaireshoe8738 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ahhh, the baskets within baskets so they can dump but you can go in and micro organize later... I do this too 😂We have a basket of overflow dental supplies, so when the dentist sends us home with new stuff, everyone just dumps it in the basket... and then when I put mine away, I tidy it up and organize by brushes, paste, floss, and expiry dates. The solid container hides the mess while I can't get to it (except from the open top), but the shallowness means that even if I don't get to it others can still find things within the macro category (and it's not overwhelming if I haven't gotten to it for a while). I’m definitely a bee. I’ve told my husband so many times. I don’t want a closet in my sewing room. Things will just go in there and be forever forgotten. So, all organized and easy to reach and visible. But disorganized and clutter sap my creativity.

    Love the phone story. A few years ago we were with friends in New Orleans hanging out in a bar/live music venue. Our friends' adult daughter suddenly realized she had misplaced her phone. We all helped her look all over and she emptied her purse onto the table to see if it was in there. One of us called her phone and the look on her face was priceless when she said, "I know where it is.". Yep, she had tucked it in her bra and the vibration tipped her off.

    So, I only recently found your youtube channel. I was looking for other people that have gone through bariatric surgery and what to expect (I will be doing rny in a couple of months). Your personality was just so infectious and relatable that I decided to subscribe - not realizing the wealth of organizational knowledge I was in store for! I'm actually excited about organizing my home again thanks to you. Even my husband peaks over my shoulder when I watch you because he likes your ideas! We both took your quiz this week and turns out we are both BEES! LOL So I am very appreciative of this and just wanted to share how much I have fallen in love with your content!

    LOL, YES! I have been a "boob tucker" for holding my phone in the past. I actually stopped doing it after hearing a handful of stories of younger women who have developed breast cancer coincidentally on the same side they tucked their phone. It could be just a coincidence but who knows - so I erred on the side of caution and stopped doing it. As always, thank you for the fantastic tips! I am reclaiming my home gradually and efficiently and have stopped trying to reach perfection out of the gate. Like you said - I can always go back and "perfect it more" at a later time and that is SO smart! ANYTHING is better than outright mess! I can really feel the decrease in my stress levels the more ground I gain!

    🐝 🐝 🐝 I have been looking forward to this video! I am a total bee! It is such a help to finally understand why I do the things I do! And it make such a difference to not only understand but to be able to now work within those tendencies! It helps explain why in the past when I would try to put things away (in closed storage) I would just end up with piles later! Also, it explains why I hold on to so much. I have trying to embrace decluttering a lot more. It hard but so worth it. When I am able to finally let something go and make space for the things I actually use/love it is such a freeing feeling! The biggest lesson I have leant is that no matter what you do, you can’t make it look pretty if you have too much stuff!

  • @kitanamorgan7491
    @kitanamorgan7491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I LOVE the Home Edit and I relate to hoarders in a lot of ways… I actually grew up around several and I’m sure that contributed to some of my struggles. Decluttering is hard for me (I’m making a lot of progress though!) but I felt so called out in most of this video. Even about the cords! LMAO I bought reusable zip ties and started wrapping them all up perfectly to sort them away but I gave up on it for awhile so my cords have been in a massive pile in the living room 😅 it’s like I do SO well when systems are in place but I struggle to have the time and patience to begin the systems... or I can’t find containers or something that are good enough for my system. No wonder people have The Home Edit do it for them… I wish they’d help me out lmao. But any bees or butterflies out there listen up! I bought black steel pipes and created a double bar stand up closet for my clothes and that is the BEST change I’ve ever made in my home! If you’re not a bee/butterfly that might sound ridiculous. But visualizing my clothes and being able to just hang things right up is SO perfect for me. For the first time in my life I’ve been keeping up on my laundry. Nothing stays in clothes baskets because it’s so easy to hang it right back up! No clothes on the floor, chair, etc. I don’t have to go searching for something to wear. I used to fold things Marie Kondo style into my drawers so it was still visually appealing and I could tell what things were at a glance, but folding things is frankly too much trouble for me and I would dread it every time so things would sit in baskets. I dreaded folding it so much I would put off doing laundry in the first place 😬 and I would have to go through every drawer and often unfold things just to pick outfits and then I wouldn’t want to fold it back up. It was just too much trouble, very inefficient. Dressers are NOT meant for us bees or butterflies! It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a closet in your room like myself, you can build one. 😉 another thing I’ve been utilizing lately is black wire grid cubes. I like the look of them and they’re decently cheap. They’re SUPER versatile. I hang my beanies and sunglasses on them, I have them displaying my shoes and purses, holding a lot of my sons toys and craft items, my Squishmallows, etc. They’re very good for transitional organizing like she suggests also! I made a giant caged “zoo” of stuffed animals temporarily until I’m ready to actually make a place for them to go and I have cubes for colouring books and notebooks that isn’t the most efficient, but is good enough until I can find clear containers suitable for them. I think us bees have a lot of characteristics of ADHD and OCPD lowkey. We have so many projects and things we need to house and can never put the time and attention into beginning a system but need things to be in a perfect system… idk. I’m glad we have this channel and The Home Edit to finally feel understood in some way though. It was hard to put my struggles with organizing into words and I didn’t know what my ideal would even be if I had one and they’ve helped me figure it out. ❤️

My co-worker always teases me that it takes me twice as long because I spend time organizing BEFORE we start, then I waste time wrapping the vac cord up EVERY time, and I must clean out my equipment AFTER we finish. Although I took the quiz - it took listening to and visually examining each of the bugs' organizing ideas and tips to say:
    1) I am first a Bee! Automatically placing thing in detailed groups or categories; having way, way too much because everything is useful, special, or may be in the infinite future; and now replacing all opaque containers [from baskets and boxes to bookshelves] with clear or open ones!
    2) I am also a Cricket! All of that needs to be behind doors, and not on an open shelf, so that it does not look [to my eyes] cluttered! (my open bookcases are for special display - never storage)
    Thank you so much, Cas! I can now focus on the letting go so I can have the space to add the now missing organization and processes to those areas that are driving me crazy!

    Hey Cas, I think I might be a wanna-be 😉Bee 🐝 - well, I mean my mind and intentions are very detailed, and I love the IDEA of all the little detailed categories, but maybe it’s time to embrace that it would be better to live like a butterfly 🦋 (maybe I could just bee-it-up in a few particular spaces, but otherwise, just let myself be a butterfly 🦋 and MOVE ON!)
    Would it be best to embrace the one that - when you talk about it - feels the biggest relief? (Which would be butterfly 🦋) Maybe I’m overthinking… 😆🤣 (like a Bee?! 🐝)

    I am definitely a bee. I am a collector and display my treasured items (mostly books), but love to have a very organized system and have everything have a place. Funny story...a lot of my books are still at my parent's house and during lockdown in 2020, my dad would call me on Google Duo to go through my books at their house to either keep or donate. More than once he would pick up a book to show it to me and I would tell him to hold on, I would run to my bookshelf in my home, and produce the exact same book and we would both crack up. So, I have bought multiple books multiple times because I lost track of what I actually own.

    OH..MY..GOD..CASS. I’M A BEE.
    I watched your older vids for the organizing categories a long time ago, but they didn’t help much. I thought I was a butterfly or cricket or whatever, but now I REALLY get it. These vids are so simple and up to date, better than previous ones. You called me out on everything. EV ER Y TH ING- the logical and emotional battles of letting go and asking those exact questions, what is worth my time, debating to get a craft cart, floating shelves, Decluttering, piles of I know it looks messy but I know where everything is, perfectionism, multiple hobbies, color coding and sorting by date, functional over pretty, save things for later, CLEAR CONTAINERS WITH LABELS… especially I don’t want to make a mistake (got yelled at for making mistakes)..
    A year ago, I bought a Kallax bookcase from IKEA in hopes it would help me get things off my desk and organize my stationery, writing notebooks and binders, sketchbooks, etc..and I bought those cloth bins without lids. I fought with those darn things for the past year. They didn’t help. All that research and time in stores and money, even frugally buying at dollar stores, gone to waste. Even with labels, I forgot what was in them, unless I wrote everything on the tiny label. I felt like I failed. Society’s options and expectations make me feel like I failed.
    I recently finally bought two clear containers (Sterlite), one with organizers inside for my washi tape, and another with handles that snap on the lid. They helped so much. I also bought tiny shelf risers with adjustable height (locker shelf things) and put them in to utilize the vertical space. It was perfect with the adjustment option. I’m definitely embracing decluttering, throwing out items quickly without emotional attachment, and ‘good enough’ with Kathryn’s “A done something is better than a perfect nothing.” I think continuing with that will be good for me, and anyone else who needs to hear this, I really hope so..
    I don’t know what to do with boxes of old things I don’t need or use anymore, like old comic book omnibuses and DVDs. Since those boxes are in front of the next area of the Kallax I want to tackle, can’t get to it until I fix the boxes of old things problem lol.. I’ve gotten better with letting things go, especially clothes I really loved but don’t fit anymore.. and was able to declutter and donate those. I might make a quilt with my favourite tshirts that no longer fit but still love them. Just getting them out of the room was refreshing. Out of sight, out of mind. Relief. Ever since finding your videos, I have changed for the better, and I’m trying to help others, too. Thank you.
    Thank you for the relief. Now I can focus on advice that works and turn my organizing perfectionism into a strength, like I did for writing and editing… Thank you, Cass.

    I knew I was a BEE but oh my gosh the way you explained it today… Is me to a T!!! Wow! I am sending this video to all of my family, especially my husband (who also knows I am a bee) to explain who I am so they will understand why it is so hard for me to get rid of things! Cas…ai just love you and what you do! And your mom stories are hilarious! …ELF ON THE SHELF 😂😂😂 THANK YOU!!! ❤😊😂❤😊😂

    OKAY, in need of intercessory prayer as I'm a cricket and hubby is a bee 😫! Now I see why his open shelves, visuals and see through bins drive me bananas, and my out of sight method of organizing drives him insane 😂😂😂...God truly has a sense of humor!

    I also use my semi retired storage area for other things. I have an insulin pump that is there all the time. And with an occasional alarm I’m always reaching in to silence the alarm. Not bringing any more attention to it. Ha ha ha! I can picture you with your pink wallet tucked into your shirt. You crack me up.
    Again I love the breakdown on bug styles. I’m trying to figure out my family members because they are NOT CRICKETS like I am. So we clash like crazy.
    Thanks again for all you do and the stories are the best.

    I've finally decided I am primarily a bee after watching your videos for years. I do prefer some things hidden (clean fridge, for example), but things I use most are out (face lotion in the bathroom, for example). If it's got a place, I'll usually put it back and things not having a place overwhelms me so they just get left out. If my family puts it in the wrong place, it drives me a little crazy. I have learned to lean more towards macro organizing where it works better for my family or it helps us just get things put away, but my instinct is more toward micro. If it's hidden in a solid bin, I'm usually slapping a label on it (making it visual). Thanks for showing up & sharing what you've learned.

    Not related to clutterbugs but you're so engaging Cass, please read one of your books as an audiobook. They're not the same without your voice and energy!

    Oh my word- I don’t think I’ve laughed this hard at your end stories as I did today. 🤣🤣 I’m not a butterfly so I skipped to the end just for the story and am so glad I did.
