4:31 The concept of "Which do you prioritize: finding it quickly, or putting it away quickly?" is a game-changer. It's a key thing to consider, regardless of organizing style. In my case, it's better to toss something in a bin, basket, or hanging door organizer pouch and dig it out later, than to make the time to micromanage the specific spot it needs to go. (Hello, ADHD!) For other people, the reverse may be true. There's no right or wrong answer, but if you're going to organize, you definitely need to know YOUR answer to that question.

I want to do both of these things! I hate when something takes a long time to put away but i want to know exactly where it is and find it super fast when I need it. I'm torn between being a lady bug and a cricket. I tend to do things in a lady bug way but drive my self and my entire family crazy with it. I am happiest when i organize like a cricket but it only stays that way for about a week then I'm back to tossing things in bins like a lady bug! 🤷
Edit: i definitely thought butterflies were the most popular because I have SO many of them in my life!

I've always felt bad about my hidden closet clutter and not putting things away in the detailed homes I thought they "should" have. Cass, I hear ya girl. I sustained a spinal cord injury about six years ago and after rehab I had to learn to drive my car with hand controls. Well I was still very new at it and had to drive myself to vote, it was the day before the last day of early voting. It was at the city hall on Main Street in a small town. So I go to park in the handicapped spot only to realize it wasn’t a spot with the striped areas to unload my wheelchair- so as I back out of it I run my back tires up on the curb that edged the spot - I heard my rims crunching against the curb and panicked. I accidentally hit the gas and my car jumped over the curb and ran into the city hall building and knocked down one of the front posts. (It wasn’t an old building or anything- it was fairly chintzy, but still). So I’m just stunned. It’s at exactly lunchtime and there are lines of people waiting to get in restaurants across the street watching my spectacular display. The Fire chief happened to be right there in the giant ladder truck so he comes running over then I hear a lady in line for a restaurant holler as she runs over that she’s a Doctor!! I lost it - I hollered back at her - no no I’m fine!! Go Away!! All the while I was wearing a new sample of mascara that Id received in the mail and then I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror….. HOLY SMOKES. I Looked like the crow!! Practically my whole face was black!! I couldn’t have been more mortified. Except that I had to come back the very next day because it was the last day to vote! As I quietly went through to vote, a little old lady working the polls grabbed my hand (I was in a wheelchair so there was no doubting who I was) and she told me I was very brave to come back and that it was all ok. 😊 it was, the city manager told me that happens a couple times a year - but it’s usually little old ladies not gals in their 30s!

My family’s a bunch of ladybugs and learning this has been GOLD for me, a cricket. Now all our spaces are organised ladybug style and it’s honestly made a big change in having everyone pick stuff up and put it away. I, too, actually enjoy the ladybug organisation in this season of life, with a baby and a bigger kid and a lot of things going on. It’s kind of nice throwing all gloves in the same drawer and be done with it. Works well as long as we’re keeping inventory low and helps me combat perfectionism.

I’m a ladybug with strong cricket style left over from when I was single. I love the Elfa rolling cart drawers for papers and office supplies. We also have the pull out drawers in our bathroom dressing area upstairs. I have my organization within my drawer. My husband just throws everything in his drawer and he prefers not to sort it out. For the last 16 months I have been mobility impaired. So everything I need has to be near me in my chair. For a while I stacked things on an end table. But at the container store I found these amazingly beautiful deep teal plastic bins. Nirvana. Sometimes I do have to stack things because I can’t carry much to get them to the place where they go. But if you look around my family room you will see mostly empty flat surfaces and very organized content. It was very helpful to learn about the difference between ease of finding something versus ease of putting it away. The cricket in me sees the absolute logic of putting something away in the proper place and I would go crazy because my butterfly husband and son don’t need that level of sorting. I’m learning to view pantry shelves as containers and let me have my level of organization combined with their organization need. Periodically I go in there and “straighten things up“ but generally I enjoy just having things sorted in big categories. I concur with some of the other comments about wanting videos helping us live with other organizing styles.

Ok so an example would be in a bathroom: daily products (body, face, hair etc), spare products, cleaning supplies, spare toilet paper rolls - one labelled box for each big category. (Whereas a cricket would want separate little sections for soaps, shampoos, etc. to know EXACTLY where every item is at any given time).
Similarly with clothes a Ladybug may toss all tops in a basket (or all jumbled on a hanging rail), whereas a Cricket would neatly fold/hang tops grouped by sleeve length/colour etc... Can you tell I'm a Cricket-turned-Mama-Ladybug, living with 2 Butterflies?! 🙈😂

Sister Ladybug here…you stated it perfectly…Ladybugs just want a quick put-it-away spot for everything! The car wash story was hysterical! I went through my first car wash and thought it was sooo easy…enter when the light turns green, stop when the light turns red…but then the light went back to green as soon as I stopped, so I started driving again…out of the car wash before any cycle started. I ended up screwing up the whole system as the car behind me got my wash, the car behind them got the wash from the car in front of them…and there was quite a line at this point. Not sure if they ever figured it out…as for me, I’ve never gone back to that station…I. Just. Can’t. And my kids were in the backseat too…mortified! 😂😂😂

It is okay as long as it is in a closet or drawer. Things out on surfaces make me anxious.

Can I be a true cricket but have to act as a ladybug to survive? I can’t take it anymore but as a young, widowed, chronic pain mom I can’t be the cricket I used to be 😔 what do I do? My kids deserve tidiness and I’m failing when I used to be so good at it.

My deepest sympathy for your loss, and situation. Just do what you can, and go easy on yourself about it - things don’t have to be ultra-organized to function. My suggestion would be to declutter as much as you can, having less stuff really helped me manage my home with two kids (I have rheumatoid arthritis), but I’m a natural ladybug. Also, teach your kids to automatically tidy whenever possible - for example, if they want to play with a different LEGO set, they need to put the one they have out away. If they want to get out ALL the LEGO sets and make a village, they need to put them all away before doing something else. Try to build in time for clean-up, e.g. ‘dinner will be ready in ten minutes, time to clean up!’ Play fast music if it helps - my kids loved ‘Yakity Sax’. When the family is done eating, everyone puts their own dishes in the dishwasher (or by the sink, if no dishwasher). Dirty clothes go right in the hamper or laundry basket in their room, not on the floor. Etc., etc. It means the dishwasher/space beside the sink and laundry basket have to be empty for this to work, probably emptied by you, but trust me, your kids can do A LOT for themselves from a very young age, and it’s not a bad thing. Little ones LOVE to do things for themselves. Make it easy for them and teach them the necessary skills so they can. Teaching kids it takes a team to keeps things tidy and they are on the team helps them develop valuable skills that will improve their school work, team sports, and later their adult life. Don’t worry if you can’t do everything perfectly - do your best, and don’t ever feel guilty because your kids ‘have to help’ - it’s better for them in the long run if they do!

I remember watching the video where you shared that story the first time, but I have no clue which video it was. Props to you for being able to tolerate the screaming - if I'm in the car and someone in it screams, my vision goes completely black until the screaming completely stops because my brain has some faulty wiring and that kind of sound makes it malfunction; so yeah, that's fun.😖

This reaffirms it! Deep down and when I was younger (read: single) I’m a Cricket 🦗 . These days, now married and my mother’s caregiver, I function as a Ladybug 🐞 I do still hear that cricket chirping “more organization within organization”. I don’t mind taking the time to put things away when they have a proper place because it helps me to find them easier and quicker when I need them.

can a person be half cricket half ladybug? I want things hidden out of sight. in regards to my personal things, I like to have micro categories but I tend to have macro organization in the "shared" spaces of my home. Guess I'm hiding things but trying to make it easier for others to put things back where I want them to go. So would I be a "Cradybug"? LOL

  • @mariebo7491
    @mariebo7491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ok so I’m very much a ladybug. No lids for me. Needs to be easy to put away. And macro categories work great like in the kitchen. But there are areas where I like to see things clearly in the basket when I look, especially in the bathroom, where I want to be able to get ready quick so I have to find it quick and be able to put it away quick out of sight. So I have little open containers inside the open baskets with the q-tips, brushes, ponytails, etc. in a way I can see everything. Which clutterbug fits that? Ladybug and cricket or bee seem like opposites. Butterfly? Do butterflies like some detail but still easy?

  • @Clara-bh8xn

My husband is a ladybug and I am a bee. We’ve compromised on clear big bins to chuck stuff in and then I have secret micro categories in the corners of each basket that I maintain. It works as long as he isn’t aware of the secret micro categories 😂

I had a car with non- retractable antenna that got ripped off in one of those car washes. That was years ago, but i still won't go back. I go to my (many!l) quarters carwash and do it manually. As I'm getting older, I am becoming more of a Ladybug and less of a Cricket. Once I got good systems in place, it's been pretty easy to maintain (no husband/no kids!)

I used to think that I'm a ladybug, but I wonder if I'm more of a cricket. I used to have my stuff in those same beige baskets that you have in the video (and then sometimes in little containers within the bins), but it bothered me to see stuff 'overflowing.' There wasn't the visual peace that I needed. When Costco had bins with lids on sale, I bought tons of them (made quite an investment) and reorganizes all my stuff into those bins. Admittedly, taking things out of those bins (and putting them back in) is a bit of a hassle because of the lids. I'm not 100% sold on this new approach, and I would probably go back to the beige bins and not fill them up as much. Too late now I guess...

I'm not sure if I'm a ladybug or a butterfly, but I'm one of them. My issue is that my son has allergies, so I need covered storage for his toys that get rotated a lot, to prevent dust from getting into them. Gosh, it's annoying, because then I start piling stuff on top of those boxes. If they were open, I wouldn't be able to. But I definitely need less complicated storage, that is one thing I've gleaned from these videos.
