      Hi Alan. I've been looking for 'Ghost World' on DVD. I'm not sure if it was even released in the UK. Finding the CD was a pleasant surprise ... There are a lot of bands like The Kingsmen - both from the US and the UK. You just wish they had someone in the band with the confidence to write original material ... That Elvis Costello and Richard Harvey album possibly only came out in the UK, as it's the soundtrack to a drama that was on Channel 4 (UK TV channel). Thanks for watching and commenting. Hi Rob. Even charity shops are selling over-priced vinyl ... 12 CDs for £4 sounds common to me ... I've never had 'Songs To Remember' before, but I did buy the 12-inch singles back in the day and loved them ... The NME became unreadable due to the pseudo-intellectual ramblings of Ian Penman and Paul Morley ... I'd love to watch 'Boys From The Blackstuff' again. From the era when BBC drama changed lives ... Cheers Rob, and thanks also for the kind words in Iain's livestream last week.

      Hi Morten. I wasn't aware of the 'Ghost World' graphic novel or the movie until a year or so ago when I found a clip on TH-cam from the movie to a soundtrack of 'Rebel Girl' by Bikini Kill. I'm fascinated by the director. It's a pity that he hasn't had the chance to make many films ... Green Gartside went from scratchy DIY punk to some of the sweetest pop music of the 1980's. I saw Scritti Politti live a few years ago, which was a surprise and a joy. Green had suffered from severe stage fright in the past ... I think the music that came out of Leeds in the late 70's is fascinating.

      @@carltweed942 Both Green and Paddy McAloon are such great talents derailed by mental and health issues. I could cry.
      Terry Zwigof is an untappd talent. It’s unfortunate we don’t give more tax money to movies of cultural importance, well, we do here in Scandinavia, and the UK with it’s lottery fund and so on, but in the US. First of his films I saw when I went to the European Film College here in Denmark in 96 and 97. We watched his film about Robert Crumb, who I allready loved back then. Used to read some fairly adult underground, counter culture comics when I was a kid. (I have wanted to be a cartoonist most of my life) Like Gilbert Sheldons Freak Brothers. Great documentary about an artist barely functioning as an adult and with many foibles and some messed up siblings. And he also directed Bad Santa of course.

    Gwen McCrae sounds very interesting. Just tried it out. I have a bunch of John Hiatt including the one you showed. Nice deal with that double Jam CD containing the 2 records. The laid back 70s sounds of Bread. I could go for that Jerry Lee Lewis compilation. Hal Blaine was really on every album from every artist there for a while back in the day.

      Hi Mike. Gwen McCrae was a pleasant surprise. It's amazing the depth of talent to be found in 60s/70s soul ... I think 'Slow Turning' is my first John Hiatt record, although I do have something by Little Village ... The Jerry Lee Lewis CD was the pick for me; or at least the recordings at Hollywood studios with James Burton on guitar ... I've always been fascinated with session musicians in the Wrecking Crew. Interesting finds, Carl. I have never seen that Costello / Harvey album anywhere. I have always avoided Scritti Politti, though every time I hear one of their tracks, I like it. On the other hand, I guess I only know a couple of their tracks, so who knows?

    • @carltweed942
      @carltweed942  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brian. I was about to stop by and look at your Kinks video for Mike ... I bought that Elvis Costello CD thinking it was Richard Hawley (singer songwriter from Sheffield who is excellent)! Elvis has limited involvement. It is all orchestral, with one track where Elvis plays acoustic guitar. I suspect 'GBH' and 'Jake's Progress' weren't released outside of the UK, as the playwright Alan Bleasdale's work probably doesn't work for an international audience ... I'm not a big fan of 80s pop productions, but I did buy 'Asylums In Jerusalem' and 'Sweetest Girl' on 12-inch single back in the day and have always loved Green Gartside. Cheers.

    I really like your honest, open minded little reviews they are really refreshing rather than just showing records and not really saying much about the actual music. I must see Ghost World again as it must be a couple of decades ago now. There was a record collecting thread in it played brilliantly by Steve Buscemi right? Summed up record collectors being creepy geeks at times quite well 😅 I'm with you on OD'ing on too many cover versions. Was a certain thing in the 60s the whole idolising US R 'n' R heroes I guess.

      Yes, a bit of a mixed bag this time. I've really struggled finding CDs at charity shops (although I do already have a little pile of CDs I've listened to for the next video). That Jerry Lee Lewis CD is very special. A real highlight from his career. Like you I've never ever seen it before. I think I have 'Mean Old Man' too. Is that his last album on Anti? ... I worship Elvis Costello. But to be honest you can get by without hearing 'Jake's Progress'. I suspect it never got released in the States, as Alan Bleasdale's dramas wouldn't translate to an international audience.
