    The BAS ESP only lights up when the car gets up to speed ( around 10 miles/ hour) do you think it’s the same problem?

      Possibly, but for you the good news is that it’s not going to fail an MOT if it only lights up at speed…

    Mine SLK R170 has both BAS/ASR and also ABS lights issue. It is the same sensor or fail of two sensors?

    • @chrisll
      @chrisll  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That sounds like two different sensors to me. My approach would be to replace the BAS then check that’s cleared and move on to the ABS…

    I've just bought a 6 speed 2001 SLK320 (which by the sound of the engine you have Chris?). The BAS ESP came on today after a bit harsh accelerating in first gear. What is that sensor actually doing? Is it detecting some sort of body flex or something?

      The BAS ESP light is initiated by the lateral acceleration sensor which measures the g-force from a turn and sends that information also to the ECU. The lateral acceleration sensor is essentially a steering angle sensor and detects then corrects the steering angle based on a variety of factors.
      A faulty sensor is usually the main cause of the light coming on but not the only one. I would go for the sensor first. I spent wasted time changing the brake sensor thinking that would be an easier fix but frankly, it was a pain and didn’t solve the issue!!!

    I have a 99 slk230 turn off headlights & car & close door & lights came back on. What can be problem??

      Hi Robert, I'm not familiar with this issue however it's worth a few fault diagnosis notes:
      - try switching the headlights to a park light position (further left either one or two clicks) and see if it still does it. If it does, it might be wiring, if not, possibly the switch...
      - Is the fault the same if you are in or out of the car?
      - The headlight control switch is adjacent to the door close point, try applying pressure to the side with the door open and seeing if the lights go on
      - ultimately it's down to either the wiring or the switch. The easiest (and cheapest) route is to change the switch. I've removed mine before and its pretty easy to do. All that's needed is to remove the lower panelling beneath the steering wheel and access is straightforward.
      - An old trick for this type of thing is to remove and replace the same switch and you MAY find that by disturbing the connections it fixes the problem. A very inexpensive first pass.
      - Also worth dismantling the panelling and dislodge the switch then before disconnecting see if the problem still appears. It maybe that there is a wire trapped somewhere.
      Anyway, good luck, I hope this has given you some ideas to look at a fix. Please let me know what you find!

    I’ve had codes read since and I’m told C1142. What do you know this is the lateral sensor.

    Does it match the model 1999 ؟؟؟

    • @chrisll
      @chrisll  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the R170 covers models between 1996 and 2004. So the1999 model will be the exact same as you see here…
