    Humanity in this book is far more terrifying than the supernatural. Lori is ..... just WOW, wtf!
    I spent the whole book muttering "wtf?" It's hard to wrap your mind around everything in this book! I really enjoyed it, it's so off the wall and unexpected, everything is unexpected.

      Completely agree! This book is definitely a mind bender, but I am so happy I read it.

    Just finished this book after a TH-cam recommendation... Wow. A tough read in places! I'm not great at reading, takes me ages to finish a book unless it's an audiobook.the fact it's short obviously helped but wow. I wasn't expecting what happened 😱

  • @jamesg507
    @jamesg507 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I guess I liked this book?? It's weird because I read it based on someone saying it's the most disturbing and awful thing they've ever read. It was short and curiosity got the best of me, like wanting to smell spoiled milk I jumped in. I was initially let down because it wasn't as trashy as I was expecting, the most disturbing parts really have nothing to do with the few scenes of violence and gore. In the end I found it well written and a tightly told story, one of the greatest depictions of a hateable character in such a short time.

    • @violetprynne
      @violetprynne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I also was recommended this book on a most disturbing list. While I've definitely read stuff that is way more disturbing, I still found this one unsettling, but really well written. The southern atmosphere was definitely my favorite part.

    I loved this book! And yes, I had to do a double take when I wrote "loved" as it was such the opposite word that I would think would describe a story like this. I read this over Christmas and I am still feeling little whispers from it.
    I am so glad you enjoyed it! You said it perfectly when talking about a character that you really rooted for and sympathized with and seemed to turn a page and just become so disgusted with them.
    @Plagued by Visions I think you might like this story too!

    i started to read this last october then put it down so that I could finish a couple other reads, then never got back to it. I'm going to start it again next month. I am happy to hear no animal abuse. I can tolerate just about anything in a book except for that.
    I would love to see a video recommending horror books with no animal abuse.

    I just finished this book yesterday and I absolutely loved it. I do agree the change of tone for the book came out of nowhere. I had put the book down for a minute when I realized what I was reading. I genuinely did not see it coming.

    I bought this on kindle and started reading it on the commute to work. Then read on my break and as soon as I got home. Ended up finishing it that day, it had me hooked so bad! I loved the way the flashbacks developed both the backstory and the current part, and the reality giving way to surrealism was done very smoothly. Even with the disturbing content I thought it was fantastic and I look forward to reading more of his work.

    I always get conflicted about reviews like this lol on the one hand it sounds great and I am so curious and intrigued, but on the other hand, I am also not into extreme Horror and I worry about if I can handle it and some images could stick with you for a long time.

    • @violetprynne

      Yeah, I feel the same way. Extreme horror is usually not my cup of tea. This one definitely has some really disturbing moments that stuck with me, but it wasn't as bad as some other things I've read recently.

    Some of the content i didnt enjoy for obvious reasons sometimes more graphic and too much detail than necessary. But the writing was really top notch you really could see whst your reading, no surrealism no pretension. By page 2 i was hooked.

    I finished listening to this audiobook today. I picked it based on your recommendation. The plot was definitely a twist. I personally don't enjoy media with that much SA, so I didn't really enjoy it. Well written, but the content is not for me.

    • @violetprynne
      @violetprynne  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is definitely very extreme content. Triana is always tip toeing on the line of writing content that is too extreme for me, but I always like that his extreme scenes serve a purpose in his story telling and are never written for shock value. But he definitely needs trigger warnings on most of his work.

    I hated this book. It was so far past believable when they started the flashbacks. Then the end was so over the top it was almost funny. Like campy comedy. I do not like this book. Too many problems. I can not believe so many people recommend it. There ya go.

      Well books are subjective, so to each their own. I quite thoroughly enjoyed the unravelling of our main character and really loved the cosmic visuals of the River Man and the whole river journey. It's definitely a very unique book.
