for end of alice it has a problem i notice happens with alot of disturbing media, it tries so hard to make you disgusted that it ends up desensitizing you to a point where anything that could have been impactful and grotesque ends up being boring, thats why so many horror and thriller media is so boring these days, everyone is trying to one up each other in what mortifying stuff they can make

I wonder if desensitization was the goal in The End of Alice? I wouldn't know how that would affect the story (because I haven't read it), but maybe it's possible that it was the author's INTENT for the final scene to make you feel nothing?

I went and bought the riverman right after watching this and finished it the same day. I haven’t read fiction in so long but I really enjoyed it, the descriptions were so visceral and although some of the twists were obvious they were still effective. The first reveal though actually made me gasp out loud and put the book down for a second. I was not expecting that part at all. It’s so great to see you not only read Gone to See the River Man, but have such a glowing recommendation for it! I read it myself and loved it, and I hope more and more people pick it up!
I think what makes it so good is because the story isn’t *just* splatterpunk-it’s a mix between that genre, Southern Gothic, Slasher, and Lovecraftian/Cosmic Horror. Not to mention that the main theme of the story is about the evil *anyone* is capable of doing, which can be quite thought-provoking and introspective.
If it interests you, the author actually has released a sequel, Down the River of Flesh, which deals with one of the surviving characters of the novel. I haven’t read it yet, so I can’t say if it’s quite as good, but it might be worth checking out.
Also, I just gotta be honest here: I kid you not, but someone did an ASMR/Audio RP based on the book! AlternateAurora-another TH-camr who posted the video on here for free-did he own fanmade sequel where the Listener meets someone who knows about the River Man, but is trying to “defy” him so to speak. Not sure how much you, or anyone who reads this comment, likes ASMR, but I recommend checking it out: putting aside Aurora is a great VA, her video manages to keep the overall theme and tone of the book, and she does add in some more lore to the River Man, so you might enjoy that, Jules. 🙂

I actually gasped with joy when I saw you reviewed Gone to See the River Man. It's genuinely one of my favourite books, so full of this weird twisted nihilism that I can't explain. I also enjoy how its written--I've taken notes on the style while taking a creative writing class because I'm so enamoured by it.
But I couldn't finish The End of Alice. It was...a bit TOO nauseating for me.

  • @imme265

I just finished gone to see the river man and Oh. My. God. That was one of the best books ive ever read, its just so sad and grim. The first half I expected some sort of gorefest, then it became supernatural and then the reveal happens. The whole thing just changes and the events after this are so predictable but thats what makes it good. Its like youve been lured into a venus fly trap and once you realize how fucked everything truly is its too late and youre just forced to read about the consequences. Lori becomes so cruel and vile and it seems so obvious in hindsight but you just cant figure it out until shes trapped herself and her sister in this fate of death and suffering. Im sorry im rambling but this was such an amazing book and I cant stop thinking about it.

You finally talked me into reading Gone to See the River Man and holy shit it was so sad.
    (Spoilers)
I liked most of the characters except Lori but fuckin hell. I loved so much about the wording and the build up and how each reveal makes you wonder what's going on and still understand more in hindsight.
Abby would have been so easy to dismiss as a caricature or just write like a full child but she was aware but unable to place it and I loved her. “I can do it. I’m not the little kid you think you made me into.” I GASPED I adore her.
I just want to give Pete a hug and tell him it wasn't his fault oh my God that poor kid.
Lori was a good unlikeable main character. The kind of "so many bad things happen to me :( my sister is disabled and my brother is dead" as though she didn't cause them. I'm still a bit mad at her for having gotten what she wanted.
It was so good idk I love it so much and looking back at my notes I connect more dots.

I read The End of Alice when I was a teenager (20+ years ago) and really only remember the female pen pal’s plot. I think she was the first pedophile I’d read who wasn’t an adult male-you don’t imagine a nice, normal (appearing) young woman can cause the same trauma. Sounds weird, but I appreciated how the book showed that such different people could perform such different-seeming actions, but in the end, all is wrong and all is harmful and all is abuse.

I think the pen pal relationship is just another narc fantasy. And what prisoner would be allowed to receive that kind of correspondence?! That shit wouldn't make it past the prison mail-sifter.
The final victim, and her parents supposed interactions with him, have also been re-fashioned to fit his fantasy world.

First I'd like to say, it's not very scary or disturbing IMO, like it has things that SHOULD be disturbing, but I just found it very blah and not very compelling in its writing. I'll spoil it for you so WARNING ANYONE READING THIS (I'll put some periods to have the spoiler at the bottom lmao)................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. So one of the "twists" is that Lori the protagonist SAd her brother so much that he became anorexic and died, and also that she was the one who pushed her sister and because of her she became disabled. The justification of it is just Lori being jealous of Abby being pretty and wanting to be good at sex so she uses her brother as practice. Honestly these flashbacks make it glaringly obvious this book is written by a man but I digress. So in the end Lori and the sister do manage to find the river man, and he tells her to finish what she started, so she kills her sister forreal this time. Her wish to him is to be with Edmund the serial killer because during her trip she realizes that she like "actually loves him" or whatever. So she goes back to her city, turns out some prisoners broke out of the prison and Edmund is waiting for her in her apartment. She is expecting Edmund to like kiss her and passionately make love to her because "he's the one" or some shit, but no he just is like uuuuh im gonna murder you now and she's like "omg is it gonna hurt" and he's like "love always does" it was such an incredibly corny way to end this book. Utterly disappointing ending, the river man portion lasts like one short chapter and yeah, that's it lmao.

I just now remembered I wanted to comment about the previous book you reviewed with the humans being bred for their meat and you mentioned that those humans were called " head" ...they weren't named that? That's what ranchers call livestock? Old Rancher #1: " howdy Earl, how's it goin'? " , Old Rancher named Earl I guess " good, good Hank, since the flood I lost 8 head but it's early still. Got a few pregnant heifers still. So we might get back 4?" , Hank " that's good I guess, lose a couple, gain a couple back." Earl, " yeah the circle of life, pass the sugar?" , "get your own sugar you bastard.!! " " hey-now, I didn't k&&l Sheila!!" No? NO?? then Where is she Earl??" ' I told you Hank, she ran off with a Meth Carnie from the carnival last fall ' ......
" oh that's right... sorry Earl?, I still Love you. "
Earl just sat there in silence, sipping his unsweetened coffee.... thinking ' I had to bury them both that night after the carnival went dark. Hank can never find out his daughter OD'ed on heroin she got from the carnie. I k&&led him with the big hammer from the Ring the Bell game.'

Ok commenting on this so late bc I read gone to see the river man. I liked parts of it but was kind of disappointed overall? The overall setting and ambience was very promising but a lot of the more ~twisted~ aspects felt kind of unnecessary, I never felt like I could connect with any of the characters. For some reason I’m comparing it in my head with Pretty Girls by Karen Slaughter, and I think it’s because that book touches on a lot of similar themes but I think it executes them much more effectively- especially the strained sister relationship after one betrays the other, plus the two of them grappling with the loss of a sibling. Also the brutality in Pretty Girls is so effective because you get so invested in the characters. In GTSTRM I never felt like I could connect with any of them. The brutality fell kind of flat for me, honestly I’ve seen it marketed as splatterpunk and I don’t feel like it’s THAT crazy. It certainly didn’t feel especially violent compared to a lot of other splatterpunk books I’ve read. I thought the ending was really interesting but far too fast, I wish everything after Lori entering the River Man’s cabin had been expanded upon because it was easily the most interesting part of the book- her complete break from reality could have been so good! But it all went too fast. I think I’m just disappointed because it felt like there was such good potential and I never felt like it reached the heights it set up for itself. It was unsatisfying.

Hi Jules, I recommend that you read I’m Thinking Of Ending Things by Iain Reid. The book is incredibly unsettling and the ending and plot twist have been stuck in my head for days from how disturbing they were. The book was extremely creative and original, I have been thinking about it ever since I first read it. It’s a fantastic book that I recken you would enjoy. Also you should probably add a rating system to your book reviews, I think that would be cool. I give it either a 9.5/10 or a 10/10.

Calling it disturbing is a stretch (though a kitten does get sacrificed for a witch's spell in the first chapter), but not enough people review, or even know about Jack Williamson's "Darker Than You Think." It ought to be a classic. There's so few good novels about werewolves.
