Story share: I was a college student in the late 80's and after a drunken night out with my girlfriends we went to the local "Village Inn" for a hangover breakfast. While we were there one of the waitress was coming off her shift and asked another waitress if she would like to see her wedding dress? This person was so excited to show it off so we all encouraged her. She goes into the public restroom to put it on and was so excited. She comes out to show it off and then we find out she is getting married to a prisoner with a history of domestic violence by our waitress. We were like wtf! I later over time felt sad for her to think she felt she was only worthy of marrying a man like that.

I think it’s so interesting what different people find disturbing. The only part of this book I really found disturbing was what happened to the brother. 😞 There were lots of other gross things but that part of the backstory was tough (and also gross).

At least I learned something that should be avoided if I know I'm not in the best headspace for it in the future (should look into TW *before* reading a book anyway). I just grew to hate her so much over the course of the book 😶 she's just... Ew.

I just finished it tonight, and I couldn’t agree more. I was also somewhat nervous about starting this one due to the hype surrounding it, but, while there are some disturbing concepts, it didn’t make me feel like I needed to take a shower immediately after finishing it. With that being said, I thought it was fantastic. I think the buildup towards the climax and the climax itself are the best examples of effective horror that I’ve read in a long time. Really looking forward to reading more of his work!

Right now I am reading Hidden Pictures, which was a bestseller here in the states and a very popular title in the library where I work. Unfortunately, to me it reads as if R.L. I think it would be helpful (and maybe you have already done this) if you did a video on what you do find disturbing. Like what concepts or acts or criteria makes for a disturbing read for you. Because digging through a corpse is super disturbing. 😄😄😄
I really enjoyed how messed up the main character was. She just kept using her previous bad choices as an excuse to make more bad choices. It was like "Oh i did this depraved thing so i might as well do this other depraved thing." It was wild. But yeah, like i said in my other post, this book was really nasty to me. I loved this book, one of my favorites I have read this year! I wouldn’t say it was “disturbing” so much as unsettling, creepy, icky, and in some points downright scary. I loved the build of dread, knowing the whole time, this is not going to end well. Have you read the sequel? It’s perhaps as good in my opinion. Thoroughly enjoyed both! While it's not disturbing, there is lots of extreme violence and I think the writing does a good job of knowing when less or more is needed. Werewolves, witchcraft, a cult, that book was a good time.

One thing I've noticed with a lot of Horror book reviews (not all reviewers) mainly American ones nearly find every book horrifying and scary. I saw one who claimed that Dracula was terrifying - I read that book at 10 and it was a enjoyable read, scary hell no. I find it interesting. Like with horror films when my brother visited America he went to see a horror film at the cinema and the audience was screaming (like in the audience trailers you used to get for films). Well upon returning back to the UK he decided to watch it again but this time the audience just laughed and were not scared at all 😂.

I don't know if you went back and watched my review again, but what sort of crept out of nowhere was the SA and ED. That's the kind of thing that creeps up and can knock over someone with PTSD and background trauma. I don't even have "stuff" in my background and it caught me a little off guard, especially the ED (watch Of Herbs and Altars' videos about pro-ana meetups/websites and you'll see what I mean). I had a discussion with someone who had some of these kind of issues, and they said it's not gore and violence and monsters that are a problem, in fact they read horror BECAUSE the monsters aren't real...so much as reminders of their own past traumas. And it can really cause panic and anxiety for the person. I think that's kind of crappy. As writers, we want to entertain our readers, not harm them. I think it's helpful to have these discussions so that a person with trauma can know about it and make up their own damn minds.

Just finished it. 75% amazing but what a terrible end! Hated it soon as she got to the riverman

Just finished it and while I like some aspects (more the beginning) it wasn't for me in general. My feelings for the main character went from dislike to annoyed hatred, it made it kind of hard to keep reading when I was so mad at everything she said or did! ^^ the part about the brother was hard to read for me, and made me really uncomfortable. In the future I need to check content warnings, sometimes this kind of stuff can be really triggering for me. I thought it was meh, in general. The letters were probably the most interesting part. The MC was just unlikeable and for me it wasn't really believable that she liked the Serial killer. If she was either more likeable, or smarter, and maybe it was also believable for us that she thought she could change this man or that this man really liked her, I would've preferred it. She seemed a bit silly to me.

Ha! I can see how disliking the MC that much would get in the way of enjoying the book

I didn't even realize how much I disliked her until I saw how much I was going on about it haha ^^ but I'm glad you liked it! :D I was also excited to re-watch this review, which made the book a little more enjoyable! @@CriminOllyBlog

I was very disappointed by this, having seen it praised on Reddit. Not nearly as disturbing as I expected so didn’t enjoy it having expected so much more.

I enjoyed it for what it was, but definitely agree it was overhyped

This book was nearly comedic to me. Way too cheesy. Plot contrivances were too convenient.
