- It's four in the morning, and I'm zoning, and you're getting saltier and saltier with every hit. Who could blame you, losing to projectile spam is about the most tilting experience in the game. But in Smash, there's a lot of little mistakes you're likely making that are making your life so much harder than it needs to be. It isn't hopeless; let me show you how to beat a spammer at their own game.

This is cool until you realize zoners have amazing anti-airs, tether grabs, close-quarter-combat, and fast out of shield. The counterplay doesn't outweigh all their tools. And when you don't hold in, they keep throwing, it's not as simple as being patient.
Agreed! But successfully beating them always starts off with being patient, which is a step lots of people tend to rush over. Still gotta play neutral after of course, just also have to lay the groundwork for that to happen!

Zoners usually have bad or at least worse frame data the exception being Zelda for some odd reason her buttons are great
they are huge and disjointed, and tether grabs, once you improve at the game are significantly worse than a normal grab, the start up is quite horrendous and If you learn how to pressure shield they can't go for shield grabs which is horrible for them since that's one less out of shield. Zoners generally aren't actually that good at being defensive they are just super good at stopping you from getting them to that point in the first place if you can break past the zoning they crumble pretty quick

This is helpful to me as a zoner because I main Robin who is out-zoned by characters like spamus and young link (because their projectiles are faster and don’t run out) and in those situations I have no choice but to close the gap with the second slowest character in the game…
So sometimes zoners need anti-zoner tech 🤷♂️

Zoning is not always reactive, some zoning is so strong you can pick and choose what areas you want to zone people out of.
Very very true!! Zoners who can get those hard reads to cover movement are some of the hardest players to beat, really feels like they're just constantly one step ahead of you lol!
@@Glyphmoney Do agree that zoning lends it's self to a more flow chart mind set though but we've all been full screen vs a samus with charge shot and been terrified to jump.
Quite the opposite actually, good zoning is based off your opponent's actions. That can mean from watching their movement or predicting it, but either way it changes every game depending on the MU and the opponent!
Til walking is faster than running against zoners.

Everything you said is true for every fighting game EXCEPT smash ultimate. The problem with ultimate is that there is save projectile spamming. There are so many scenarios in ultimate where i know exactly when and how a zoner is going to throw its projectile but i still cannot punish it. i need to read several projectiles correctly in a row to close the gap and even then i am not guaranteed a punish, because they usually still can block/spot dodge or maybe even have great close quarter options.
In a game like SF if you are in mid-long range and know your opponent is going to shoot a fireball you jump right before he shoots, this will almost always guarantee you a successful jump attack hit, which is a potential combo starter. Depending on the character and range you might even be able to react and punish. In smash this rarely works. Now add the horrible net code and zoning just becomes easy mode.
Careful friend, you're dangerously close to blaming the game and not your own mistakes for losing. Smash absolutely does give zoners the tools to defend themselves, beating zoning usually takes more than jumping over a single shot. You may not agree with the level of patience required to succeed here, but that doesn't make it wrong!
@@Glyphmoney i think smash ultimate in general is way to spammy compared to other fighting games (also older smash games). This is not just about projectiles, but certain chars can spam save hitbox for far too long until there is an opnening. but i agree that is personal taste. But to be fair, the easy mode for zoners was missing the reference to online play. offline all is fair and square imo, but i admit i wish everything was less about spamming and more about precision in ultimate.

Also, at 2:19 you say walking means a faster access to block. Can you shield faster in walking than run?
Anyways this video, while treacherous, is incredibly well edited my fellow R.O.B.. these are genuinely the best edited smash essays I've ever seen.
Specifically I'm referring to the window where you can't act at all at the start of a dash there, shield is always frame 1 but that only helps if you can do an input in the first place!

It should be tournament rules that you can remove one of the zoner's teeth with a pair of pliers for every projectile they throw, then they'd know how painful it is to be forced into a match with them and the playing field would be even.
Sure, but wouldn't that only work for one game?? I'm no dentist but I shoot dozens of projectiles in a game and have no plans of stopping or slowing down :]

You must respect zoning to beat a zoner
The hell are you talking about you're gonna destroy them when you get in? Samus, all the links, most anyone with any zoning capabilities has great disjointed fast lagless close range options, plus they usually have great rolls and decent maueverability. So no, unless it's k rool you aren't going to destroy them, you'll get one hit or combo before they reset neutral if they don't just beat out your attack with theirs. Still a good video on how to approach though
I think you're mistaken friend, you just used 'Samus' and 'Great Rolls' in the same sentence =p. Seriously though you're right, those characters are not at all helpless up close, but their options are also blatantly worse than most characters. Look at how awful Link and Samus's jabs are, how underwhelming their combo breakers are. They exist, but far from in a sense where they're in their element once you get in

I have a great piece of advice for that! Platform camp that green idiot. Seriously, his only real threat is landing the grab and that can't happen when he's jumping. Force him to fight you up there until you're past the grab kill percents and the MU becomes much more manageable :]

I know leaving isint gonna make me better at the game or anything, but smash isint a game I want to take seriously enough to get better at. It's a game I play casually on the side, but Zoning just makes it an un fun experience so why even play lol
Fighting a zoner isn’t even that bad tho. I can see where ur coming from but like, I think you’d enjoy the game a ton more if you took a little time and learned how 2 play against zoners instead of just turning off the switch
