    Funny how tourniquets fell out of favor in EMS for many years because someone convinced someone else of the potential for distal nerve damage. It only took a couple decades for someone else to successfully argue that saving a life was more important than saving a limb…..aaaaannnnd we’re back.

      When I went through basic in 2002, they told us to apply a tourniquet only if it is a life and death situation, because a tourniquet is a cut here line for the doctor to amputate.

    • @capofantasma97
      @capofantasma97 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@Lets-Go-Family that's partially true, you only really need a tourniquet if there's a significant blood loss and especially in case of arterial blood loss; typically in civilian cases it's unnecessary because accidents that catastrophic are unlikely, the EMS will arrive rather quickly and will instruct you in the meantime what to do. In many places, applying a tourniquet without having some form of training will make you liable to the victim pressing charges for unnecessary damages. You only need to buy time until professionals arrive, which means applying pressure to slow the bleeding will often be more than enough.
      If applied correctly and following some basic know-hows, tourniquets don't necessarily cause the victim to lose a limb, especially in modern day. You need about 2 hours of continued application for necrosis to start, and often need 6 hours before the limb is completely lost and requires amputation. Do note how actual tourniquets also have a label to write the time of application on. Past guidelines would also include the periodic removal and reapplication of the tourniquet, but it fell out of favor because it would significantly increase the risk of bleeding out, it's not something first responders should do.
      In this scene, it's not really a tourniquet either, you need a leverage to properly apply the significant pressure to block blood flow effectively. You might slow bleeding with a belt if you keep it tight, but not that significantly. Often times it can't even constrict the arteries, and may cause more blood loss. It's typically better to just apply pressure, ideally with bandages. If it's a gaping wound, there are bandages to fill it in so you can apply pressure inside. Compression bandages are often mistaken for tourniquets too but they're not.
      Always call EMS immediately after an accident, no waiting, they need to send help as soon as possible and they'll give instructions on how to handle the situation.

    • @Ruhrpottpatriot
      @Ruhrpottpatriot ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@capofantasma97 There's another reason not to remove a once applied tourniquet: Blod clots. Those form rather quickly and can lead to much worse damage if the device is removed. Once you apply a tourniquet, it stays on until the patient is in a hospital.

    This scene is nice and all, but for you folks at home, using a belt as an improvised tourniquet is not a good idea because no matter how hard you pull, it'll never be tight enough. However, simply grab a piece of cloth like a towel and a stick; tie the towel to the stick and begin twisting it tighter and tighter to the point where it is absolutely choking your limb. It may hurt like hell, but if you have an open artery, you'll bleed out in minutes. And always tie the tourniquet ABOVE the wound, not below it.

    • @JM-db8ez
      @JM-db8ez ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Improvised tourniquet is better than nothing, and a belt can work temporarily. Not sure why you felt compelled to issue your critique and advice here, any more than I know why I answered it. TH-cam is just full of weird, arbitrary and nebulous information.

      @@JM-db8ez Instead of a belt you're better off just applying pressure to the wound with a cloth.. A real tourniquet is of course better but using a belt is Hollywood BS.
      In response to Paul Calleja, you want to stop blood being pumped to the wound and out of the body, so you tie the tourniquet "above" the wound to cut off the blood flow to the affected area. If you tie it below, the blood is still going to reach the wound. Above; to be clear, means closer to the heart.

    I think some people discovered their love for something later in life and he knew he enjoyed the feeling of savings someone's life, since in essense christians are big on helping people live a good life. I think being a doctor was out of the question, but I think he would've became a good one. He likely married his wife for the same reason. Sadly Desmond got tuberculosis from the war and had to have 5 ribs removed and a lung and eventually lost his hearing. Because of his time served in war, the bombs likely damaged his hearing. The people he saved, visited him from far away, because he couldn't hear over the phone anymore. It was the least they could do.
