    I watched this movie at 19 when it came out and I thought Desmond's father was the biggest asshole ever. I rewatched the movie this year and all I see is a broken man who's so broken he can't help but break others around him.

      I see unfeeling people around him that can't get out of their heads long enough to understand that not only would seeing that bring back all of his suffering and make him relive it, but the knowledge that even if he survived, his son would be broken like him. Can you imagine the flashbacks that uniform would cause? The real horrible thing is that families were not taught about this. This movie came out 10 years after the start of the social media age (movie: 2016 - twitter/facebook: 2006). This movie was made after director mel gibson received a lot of pushback on social media and old media as a result of the tapes with police that were spread over the internet (2011). So this movie was made in the social media age.

History teaches how nations have fallen when the Presence of GOD is driven away by crime, that the Bible defines as sin, and the enemy of peace takes His place. Couldn't keep your buddies alive in the great war. Can't keep your sons from joining this war. Can't even hold yourself together for one meal. Christ, can you at least pass the potatoes without sobbing into them, Pop?
    People like this use their past as an excuse to hurt and disrepect others rather than rebuilding themselves. I say this having been it myself. Just because you've suffered is no excuse to treat others with a lack of dignity. Life is suffering. How you bear your suffering is equally important to what and why you've suffered.

    • @Karma-qt4ji

    • @InsanitysApex
      @InsanitysApex ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Karma-qt4ji It's always a choice. The father spent his life after the war pitying himself, and worse he brought others down all around him. He spent every action acting a bit more dead and alone than he truly was. He dishonored his friends sacrifices by not holding himself to a higher standard and living better, at least trying to fight in the right direction.
      I've survived 2 wars so don't give me that bullshit. How you choose to act and conduct yourself, especially with mental illnesses, is a choice. I have experience with multiple of my own, hence the name. You're only excusing his weakness so you can enable your own.
      What if you could do better? When did you stop dreaming about living life to its fullest? Your mental illness didn't kill your dreams, you did. It's time for you to wake up and start believing again.

      @Karma-qt4ji ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InsanitysApex Don't jump to conclusions, mate; I came out of a war and I am just fine, thank you. Friends of mine were not so lucky and I personally would never say that they have a choice in their current state. Nor would I mock you and your mental illnesses and tell you they were a choice either; I would simply empathise, try to be understanding, and move on.
      But that's me.

    • @InsanitysApex
      @InsanitysApex ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Karma-qt4ji What conclusions did I jump to with you? DId I say you hadn't been in war? No, you've conflated me insulting your argument with insulting your own similar experiences. Your friends do have a choice in how they act, think, and feel now. There's a thin line between empathizing and enabling. Which do you do? Would you stake your friendships on it? How about the outcome of their lives?
      The reason the father is wrong here is simple; he's using his own self-pity and despair to actively deter his sons from choosing the life they want (hypocritically at that). A man's destiny is his own. The father is not persuading from a position of moral strength and inspiration but rather from moral weakness and fear. Weak execution and weak intentions (and excusing it as you do) reaps weak results.
      You wouldn't mock me or my illness because you're morally weaker than you should be (so you patronize me instead), which is why you also defend the father's immoral behavior which allows you to excuse your own immoral behavior. I "mocked" my own illness and broke myself of bad habits, emotions, and thoughts. In doing so my insanity has become a mental strength. Insanity is infinite responsibility, chaos, and leverage VS. a finite mind but it also can be overcome for infinite potential and growth once mastered.
      Every psychiatric diagnosis has benefits in addition to it's costs (depression, anxiety, NPD, Autism etc). They are cognitive tradeoffs and adaptations, often acquired under duress, but they benefit the species as a whole(which is why they've evolved over millions of years, and most are seen in many species, especially other mammals). They can also benefit the individual once mastered. Their acquisition may be "fate", but mastery, understanding, and integration of psychiatric disorders is a choice.
      You say you "try to be understanding and move on". Do you understand that in patronizing your friends you make it more difficult for them to ever move on? To live better, fuller, and happier lives? You treat them like wounded puppies and call it empathy but truly you cripple their recovery while self-righteously padding your own ego from responsibility. It's a common sin born of fear, contempt, and pity.
      If they survived a war they can certainly survive your well-intentioned tough love. You fear giving your friends the same thing the father fears giving himself; a coup de grace to the ego. That is the ego's purpose, to die so the person's body and/or whole personality doesn't have to. It's also why ego-deaths are so transformative and beneficial. And ego's in relational conflicts very rarely die catastrophically as a whole (betrayal from lover/parents) but rather only suffer necesary deaths to wounded parts with minimal collateral damage. You likely overestimate your ability to damage their psyche greatly.
      If you honestly value karmic justice as much as your name implies you'd give your friends the harsh truth's necessary to spurn and churn their newborn wings with fresh flight, rather than feeding the damaged worms your sweet lies and empty platitudes like some incestuous oedipal mother preying on her own. Real friends make real sacrifices, up to and including risking the friendship itself when necessary. How real of a friend are you? If your friends deserve a better life than they also deserve the better version of you necessary to help them achieve it.
      The truth is the universe was never fair, which is why Karma, a delusion of hope, was created to cheaply inspire those terrified in the face of overwhelming existential dread, infinite chaos, and cosmic injustice. Do you want to be the stereotypical man who lies haplessly and helplessly in the "lazy river" of life letting "fate" do his work for him? Would you believe in "karma" so convincingly if it were renamed "plausibly deniable irresponsibility"? Do you have a responsibility to your friends destinies, especially now that you hold such information?
      The universe isn't fair which also affords us the opportunity to divine our own uniquely curious destinies. I believe you have the strength necessary to help your friends, most especially by giving them harsh-truths that their civilian family and friends could never.
