      I wanted to enlist after that gay night club shooting, not because I thought homosexual actions were ok, but because they're people like you and me, but they thought I was crazy. It turned out they were right one day, but I felt extreme shame in not serving like my dad and my brother did. No going back from that now though. At least I can't be drafted.

      morally yues, but he made a decision which conflicted with an officer's orders and as such refused to follow those orders, which at the time is the easiest court martial you're ever gonna get

      What I don't understand about that is why it had to come from a high ranking officer? Wouldn't it be his defence attorneys job to know/figure out the rights of Doss and then argue them in court? Does military courts work differently from regular courts?

      I mean, he literally stated that two guys from his hometown committed suicide because they couldnt serve. Those young men had no idea about war, same as the young men in germany or anywhere else. They were promised glory and experienced hell.

      Doss refused to. It was his religious conviction not to. Plus, during WWII, the Geneva convention was in effect, which set "rules of engagement" for the warring factions. Among other things, it said "you can't shoot a medic". If Doss carried a weapon, he'd be considered part of the infantry and would be shot at like other soldiers.

    It's so weird to see someone fighting so he can have a higher odds of being murdered in the most horrible way
    All because someone he doesn't even know wanted him to fight for death
    Either the movie isn't realistic or they really have been brainwashed

      This is based on a real life veteran Desmond Doss, so yes; it's realistic.
      As for brainwashing, I can't argue with that. It happened to me when I was in the USMC and continues to this day.

      It’s a retelling of a true story. It wasn’t either. Even after serving he continued to speak of peace and when he served he never picked up a rifle once. He was just a brave man who believes the way of the lord

His wife was a nurse he knew what war was like and saw their scars at the hospital. His father and brother were in the service. He knew how men died. He just had patriotism that a lot of people lack now days. Men still today will go and serve damn well knowing the near promise of death because it means protecting this country. I see nothing but a brave man. Not one who’s brainwashed or oblivious. By claiming that,you are basically just removing any honor from their pride and belittling their sacrifice. Quite rude if you ask me.

      @@Ellaruthiepie i guess is just a different point of view my friend, i see the "protecting the country" or "patriotism" as a manipulation tool, using and taking the feeling of "belonging to a place" and making it look as an extreme imminent attack to it, at the time in the US this wasn't the case, just a small part of the territory was attacked, sending the Main army, navy, etc and sending equipment to the allies should have been enough, there wasn't a need of brainwash young civilians with propaganda so they can go to die.
