Rivian R2 and R3/R3X Up Close: Rivian’s Next Act

- U.S. electric automaker Rivian has created some of the most impressive vehicles on the market right now, with its all-electric R1T pickup truck and R1S three-row SUV. While production has been slower than hoped and sales have been a bit of a struggle, the company’s first efforts are outstanding products and were given a refresh for 2025. But what comes after the big R1 models? Rivian took the wraps off its future product lineup earlier in March, but we just had a good up-close look at the new Rivian R2 SUV coming in early 2026, and the R3 and R3X coming sometime after the R2 arrives.
Smaller than the big R1 models, the R2 and R3 are built on a totally new mid-size platform, using a lot of what Rivian’s learned in designing and building the R1s in creating lighter, less expensive models to expand its appeal to a lot more buyers.
Cars.com Detroit Bureau Chief Aaron Bragman recently had an up-close, personal tour of the new R2, R3 and R3X at Rivian’s engineering facility in suburban Detroit, and he came away massively impressed with what’s coming down the pipe. And now that Rivian has secured some much-needed funding thanks to a billion-dollar buy-in from Volkswagen, the likelihood of the company surviving the two years it needs to finally engineer and build these next-generation EVs is much more probable. @@buddyotter VW rescued them for sure with the 5 billion JV. They are projected to turn a gross profit per vehicle by Q4 which is huge because they were losing money per vehicle since their inception. The R2 will be a success but in my opinion, it will be the R3/R3X that will be their defining moment.

I don’t own a Rivian yet, waiting for R2 and R3X. I did buy shares after announcing because I think they have what market is missing and will sell well.
I absolutely love my R1T Launch Edition. Best vehicle I have ever owned. 0-60 In 3 seconds never gets old! Waiting for my order of the R2S.

I wanna see how big the frunk on the R3 is and what the price of it is too. Will the RWD be 30K? Will it go 300 mile range? Will it be V4 Supercharger compatible? That would be a steal of the century.

The R3/R3X needs to be prioritized over yet another large SUV like the R2.
No it shouldn’t. The R2 is what will be their sales leader not the R3. The simple fact is if you actually look at what are the sales leaders for all the automakers it’s pickups & SUV that are the size of the R2. For example, Toyota’s #1 seller is the Rav4, Tesla’s #1 seller is the Model Y, Chevy’s #1 selling SUV is the Equinox & Ford’s best selling SUV is the Escape with the Bronco Sport close behind. The R2 is roughly the same size as all of these being slightly smaller than a Model Y & slightly bigger than the Equinox. They have to focus on what will sell the most & that’s going to be the R2.

Very cool but I'm most interested in the Vinfast VF3... A 2-door hatchback SUV from Vietnam coming to North America next year... Even with a 125 mile range and Fiat 500e proportions but taller I'm down for it! Especially at around the $20K mark...
Just reserved an R2 after seeing it in person. Pefect size for me. Saw the R3 as well, strong reminder of the old VW Golf.
How do you see it in person?
I just hope they have a option with 400+ miles range, there’s already a bunch of compact suv with 300-330 mile range

So $45 for the R3 and $55 for the R2. These look great though. If they can keep the costs down, perfect little commuters and errand runners.
Rivian updated the RI & fixed a bounce of stuff after 2 years… which goes back to the old rule of thumb about not buying a car until the 3rd model year. So if the R2 comes out in 2026, I will look seriously at one in 2028. But I’m totally the target demographic for the R2 & I think Rivian has good tech.

if I can get an r3x for 45-50k im 100% in. I hope they give a dual motor option, no need for trimotor on a car that size, at least not at my age.
After i pay off my 21 Honda pilot, the R2 will be mine , Interior and quality is way better than Teslas model Y, alot of my friend and family has the model y, but i work for Rivian and i see big difference in quality

I hope they release evs that can delete the glass roof for a metal roof and cloth seats. I live in texas and it gets over 110 degrees too much glass and non cloth seats are brutal .
Rivian - do MPV as well based on R2 platform - no air ride, dual motor mox, big battery, and 7/8 individual seats, sliding doors and other big family essentials like the most importan thing in family car - childseat tilt foe 2nd row of seats !! and... send it to Europe as well.

Hyundai has something called the Casper that has an EV variant that has a similar shape to this but much smaller… but as usual it’s going to be sold everywhere in the world except North America 😢

Let's be clear, the R3 is no SUV. It's a hatchback, just like the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Call it an SUV, and people buy them. Call them a hatchback and you go out of business. 😅
These are just vaporware at this point considering the announced delivery dates.

This is standard fare. Rivian has clearly demonstrated the ability to deliver. No reason to doubt they can deliver the R2/R3 on schedule.
@@jayem8981 per Forbes rivian has now burned up over $20,000,000,000 since 2019 for less than 100,000 total vehicle's produced and they we're founded back in 2009. They've also cut over 23% of their total staffing in the past 20 months.
That's the only couple thing rivians proved quite capable of doing with any alclarity so far anyway! 😀👍🏻
